2008-05-26 Thread shantikam hazarika
I hope someone will read and review the book for the Assam Press. I have heard
about this, but no authentication was possible.
Can we have a write up on Brendan Koerner and how he came across this plot?

[Assam] Fake NASA Junior Scientist case : Kolhapur boy cons authorities to get money for fake NASA trip : Assamese boy ARNAB KAKOTI under suspect

2008-05-26 Thread Buljit Buragohain

Hi all, Please read All the news given below very carefully. Please,
please go through it. Its really very very IMPORTANT.

Two Indian prodigies make it to NASA

(Link of the News : http://www.merinews.com/catFull.jsp?articleID=134363)
Two young Indian prodigies – one belonging to a middle-class family from
Assam and the other being a son of a farmer from a village in Kolhapur – have
made it to NASA, US, to train as an astronomer after NASA discovered their
talents..
CJ: Sasidharan Nair , 5 days ago Views:791 Comments:5
THIS IS about two young Indian scientists who are in the news now. The first
is a 20-year-old prodigy, Arnab Kakoti from Assam, and the other one is 17
years old Sridhar Kamble from Maharashtra.

Kakoti, the wonder boy, hails from Golghat, a small town in upper Assam. He
is pursuing his mechanical engineering from Gandhi Institute of Engineering and
Technology (GIET), besides heading a project in the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA). He is one of the seven project in-charges of NASA.
Kakoti earned this distinct honour through his phenomenal research on asteroids.

He is in India now, to appear for his mechanical engineering exam. During an
interaction with students of Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV) in Dibrugarh,
where he studied till class X, Kakoti said that he was working on building a
satellite, which would detect calamities like Tsunami, global warming well in
advance.

At a young age, he listened to bedtime-stores of Swami Vivekananda, told by
his mother, with curiosity, which had highly influenced him. The mysteries of
the world used to amuse him and he inured to question himself, "What is god?"
He believes that god is the power that balances the energy of the universe.

Kokati was lucky to born to such high-minded parents, who taught him the
moral values, ethics, culture and traditions that India cherishes. Though not
rich, they gave best possible education to their son and significantly,
influenced to mould his persona of a good human being. Kokati believes in
respecting parents and teachers. He said that mediocrity was not a hurdle..
Hard work, dedication and a deep understanding of your passion will lead to
break the path to victory.

While studying in class X, Kokati had sent his hypothesis of 50 pages on
'Formation of Mars and Asteroids' to NASA. After 10 months, he received 20
e-mails from NASA. The first e-mail, from its director, said, "You are the only
person who can save this world."

He was not a brilliant student in school. Kokati was shy and used to score
around 60 per cent marks, recalled his teacher, Bharati Thakur, a teacher who
belongs to Nasik and had gone to Golghat to teach in Vivekananda Kendra
Vidyalaya (VKV).

Kokati was interested in space science from a very young age. He had sent his
research paper on the 'Big Bang' theory to the World Junior NASA Competition
and was selected as a junior scientist of the space agency, which invited him
to join them and study there. He also came in contact with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam,
who guided and motivated him on his work.

He has taken part in nine NASA seminars and two others with the European
Space Agency (ESA).

Kakoti was felicitated by Governor, Ajai Singh on April 15 at Durbar Hall of
Raj Bhavan in Guwahati, for being selected as junior scientist in NASA, America.

The second young scientist is Shridhar Kamble, a farmer's 17-year-old HSC
student from Tiravade village in Kolhapur. He has been selected by NASA,
America, to train as an astronomer in one of the leading American universities.

The selection was on the basis of a feedback sent by him on the NASA's Jet
Propulsion Lab's scientists' findings on 'Evolution of Galaxy'. Dr RV Bhosale,
an 83-year-old former NASA scientist and presently honorary professor at
Shivaji University in Kolhapur, was impressed by Kamble 's theory on galaxy
evolution and gave Kamble necessary guidance in writing his feedback.

Kamble is the son of Dhulappa Kamble and Kanchan Kamble, who are from Dalit
community and are small landholding farmers. He had earlier won young scientist
award from Bhabha Research Institute when he was in eighth standard.

His feedback was selected by NASA and awarded a scholarship of $ 10,000. The
authorities invited him to join NASA as a junior scientist and also recommended
direct admission to Colorado University to study galaxy evolution, high energy
physics, astrophysics and astronomy without any entrance examination like
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). NASA offered full financial assistance for his
third and fourth year in the four-year under graduation course and he had to
arrange around Rs 40 lakhs for his first and second year studies, travel and
living expenses.

After reading an article on May 15 (Thursday morning), chief minister,
Vilasrao Deshmukh told his principal secretary to write a

The cool and scenic ambience of LALBAGH Botanical garden in Bangalore
reverberated with the harmonious rendition of the heartwarming “O Mur Apunor
Dekh” by all the fifty or more AXOMIYA raij, including the young “Moinas” who
had gathered for the first Moina Mel RODALI on Sunday.
It was an evening to remember, an evening to cherish, a time reminiscent of
our beloved Axom as the cheerful laughter and melodic singing of the young
children, their youthful exuberance and playful innocence made it one of the
most memorable and enjoyable evening of our life here in Bangalore.
We are overwhelmed with emotion and greatly inspired by the
enthusiastic response from all who actively participated in our first MOINA MEL
session and we would like to extend our heartiest thanks to our young Moinas’
and their Parents for making it such an interactive, fun filled and learning
session. Also, a special thanks to everyone else who was present yesterday and
lent an encouraging support with their participation and valuable inputs.
We plan to continue with these Moina Mel sessions in the coming
weeks and we will again get-together for the next one on 1st June, 2008
(Sunday) at Lalbagh itself (Timing: 3.30 pm-5.30 pm). We look forward to
everyone’s continued support, encouragement and participation and hope more of
our Axomiya raij and our young Moinas will join us in our future sessions.

Snapshots from RODALI on 25th May, Sunday:

We gathered at around 4-4.30 pm in the evening with Yugantar da
starting off the proceedings with a brief introduction or “Hobha’r Udeshyo
Bakhya” wherein he welcomed everyone and outlined the intention and
significance of organizing such MOINA MEL sessions in a place like Bangalore
which is seeing an ever-increasing influx of Assamese people from different
walks of life.
Then, we had a brief self-introductory or “Moina hokolor
Sina-porisoi” round where everyone from the young children to the adults
present introduced themselves.
This was followed by some fun activities like poem-recital and
singing of Assamese poems and songs by our young Moinas’, thus displaying their
budding talent and potential to the fullest.
Then it was QUIZ time. A few questions related to AXOM, its
history and culture were thrown at the young participants to gauge their level
of awareness, but all were answered with great élan and confidence.
Taking cognizance of the fact that “All work and no play may make
our young Moinas dull”, we had a “Khel-dhemali” session full of games like
“tekeli-bhonga” wherein all our young moinas participated with great enthusiasm
and vigour.
Finally, after a quick round of snacks and soft drinks/juice, the
first RODALI session was concluded with everyone proudly joining in the singing
of “O MUR APUNOR DEKH……….” taking us all through a nostalgic trip back to our
beloved Axom, a t

"Now the Hell Will Start is a fascinating, untold story of the Second World
War, an incendiary social document, and a thrilling, campfire tale adventure."
  --George Pelecanos

  Product Description
Part history, part thriller, Now the Hell Will Start tells the astonishing
tale of Herman Perry, the soldier who sparked the greatest manhunt of World War
II- and who became that war's unlikeliest folk hero

A true story of murder, love, and headhunters, Now the Hell Will Start tells
the remarkable tale of Herman Perry, a budding playboy from the streets of
Washington, D.C., who wound up going native in the Indo-Burmese jungle-not
because he yearned for adventure, but rather to escape the greatest manhunt
conducted by the United States Army during World War II.

An African American G.I. assigned to a segregated labor battalion, Perry was
shipped to South Asia in 1943, enduring unspeakable hardships while sailing
around the globe. He was one of thousands of black soldiers dispatched to build
the Ledo Road, a highway meant to appease China's conniving dictator, Chiang
Kai-shek. Stretching from the thickly forested mountains of northeast India
across the tiger-infested vales of Burma, the road was a lethal nightmare,
beset by monsoons, malaria, and insects that chewed men's flesh to pulp.

Perry could not endure the jungle's brutality, nor the racist treatment meted
out by his white officers. He found solace in opium and marijuana, which
further warped his fraying psyche. Finally, on March 5, 1944, he broke down-an
emotional collapse that ended with him shooting an unarmed white lieutenant.

So began Perry's flight through the Indo-Burmese wilderness, one of the
planet's most hostile realms. While the military police combed the brothels of
Calcutta, Perry trekked through the jungle, eventually stumbling upon a village
festooned with polished human skulls. It was here, amid a tribe of elaborately
tattooed headhunters, that Herman Perry would find bliss-and would marry the
chief 's fourteen-year-old daughter.

Starting off with nothing more than a ten-word snippet culled from an obscure
bibliography, Brendan I. Koerner spent nearly five years chasing Perry's
ghost-a pursuit that eventually led him to the remotest corners of India and
Burma, where drug runners and ethnic militias now hold sway. Along the way,
Koerner uncovered the forgotten story of the Ledo Road's black G.I.s, for whom
Jim Crow was as virulent an enemy as the Japanese. Many of these troops revered
the elusive Perry as a folk hero-whom they named the Jungle King.

Sweeping from North Carolina's Depression-era cotton fields all the way to
the Himalayas, Now the Hell Will Start is an epic saga of hubris, cruelty, and
redemption. Yet it is also an exhilarating thriller, a cat-and-mouse yarn that
dazzles and haunts.

2008-05-26 Thread uttam borthakur
A few years ago an IPS from Bihar asked me a question with a condescending
attitude as to why Assam boys/ girls do not/ cannot succeed in UPSC like the
Biharis do. To please him, I replied that when they had Nalanda, we did not
have such facilities:-). So, I assured him that we'll catch up soon. I think
the catching up process has started now with Nabanita, Rajib et al!

Great achievement
—
The recently declared results of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)
examination have enough reasons to make the State proud. This time a total of
four candidates from the State has cleared the coveted civil services
examinations. Nabanita Chakrabarti of Guwahati, Nayanjyoti Nath of Jamugurihat,
Rahul Kotoky of Sivasagar and Neelabh Roy Dasgupta of Nagaon will soon be a
part of the country’s elite civil administration. Nabanita Chakrabarti’s
performance in the examinations has become the icing on the cake of success for
the State. She had secured the 16th position in the UPSC examinations. To
figure amongst the top 20 by itself is a great achievement. This year’s result
has once again brought to the fore that there is no dearth of talent in the
State. What is needed is proper guidance, encouragement and motivations. But
sadly enough the State is lagging far behind so far as training and guidance to
the aspirants is concerned.

As in the other years, this year too, the successful candidates had their
higher education outside the State. The lack of a proper academic environment
also stands in the way of the aspirants who want to prepare for the civil
services examination. Unless there is a change in the education scene in the
State, the prospective aspirants would have no way out but to go to places like
New Delhi to get proper training to crack the UPSC examination. On their part
the four successful candidates have once again highlighted that there are no
short cuts for success. It is hard work, and perseverance. They were focussed
on their goal and didn’t allow setbacks to stand in their way. Incidentally it
was in her fourth attempt in the UPSC examination Nabanita figured in the
coveted top 20 list. This year’s results should inspire more aspirants to vie
for civil service examinations. For the benefit of the prospective candidates,
the State on its part should set up centres in different areas
to provide adequate training. A proper academic environment is also a must to
motivate the students of the State to prepare themselves and appear in
competitive examinations.

[Assam] Plot hunt for university (The Telegraph,26.05.2008)

2008-05-26 Thread Buljit Buragohain
Plot hunt for university
A STAFF REPORTER May 25: With an aim of turning Guwahati into one of
the most sought-after destinations for higher education, Dispur has started
scouting for a plot in and around the capital city to set up a world-class
university.
Sources in the chief minister’s office said the revenue department last week
directed the Kamrup and Kamrup (metro) districts to identify a 700-acre plot to
set up the university.
Guwahati was shortlisted by the human resource development ministry as one of
the suitable places for setting up of world-class universities.
Having lost the IIM race to Shillong, Dispur this time has swung into action
to identify the plot, soon after getting the Centre’s nod to set up f the
university early this month.
Those in the administration believe that the Centre could change the image of
the state in a positive way and development of the education sector could help
generate jobs as well as stop flight of capital to other cities. Students from
the state, who can afford, usually go to other cities and metros to pursue
higher education.
It is understood that Kamrup is better placed to find the desired plot than
Kamrup (metro) district. Chandrapur and Sonapur are the areas within the metro
administration with spare land, which can meet the requirements of Dispur. Both
the district administrations have deputed officers to identify the plot.
Though the Kamrum (metro) deputy commissioner could not be contacted, the
deputy commissioner of Kamrup, R.C. Jain, confirmed having received such a
directive from Dispur. “We have started work on the directive. We are hopeful
of finding a suitable plot,” he said.
Sources in both the district administrations said if the government gives its
approval then private plots could also be bought in exchange of adequate
compensation. “Acquiring a huge plot in and around the city will not be easy
but if we get the government’s approval, then we can try and acquire private
plots,” one of them said.
On March 28, the HRD ministry had announced the setting up of the 14 “world
class universities” along with eight new IITs and seven IIMs.
Besides Guwahati, the 13 cities which have been chosen for setting up of the
world class institutions are Pune, Calcutta, Coimbatore, Mysore, Vishakapatnam,
Gandhinagar, Jaipur, Patna, Bhopal, Kochi, Amritsar, Bhubaneswar and Greater
Noida.
Education department sources said world class universities would be an
updated version of central universities. “Since the HRD ministry had made it
clear that establishment of the IITs, IIMs and central universities in the
above cities was subject to state governments offering adequate land at
suitable locations free of cost, we are not wasting any time. It is a big
project,” a source in the education department said.
