[Assam] Dance like a Sattriya woman
Dear Ms. Ruchira Hoon, It seems you are a regular writer for Art and Culture section of Hindustantimes. In your recent article Dance like a Sattriya woman you have written . Menaka has used her talent to focus on Sattriya, a tribal dance form from Assam that has now been elevated to the status of a classical dance. Satriya is not a tribal dance. From where did you get this information? If you would have done your home work before writing this article, you would have known the fact that Assamese cultural and social reformer Srimanta Sankardeva created this dance form and now prevalent and trained in 'Satras (Vaishnavaite monestry). Even if you did not care to do your home work, you could have asked Menaka P P Bora about this dance form! Ms. Hoon, please use your talent to disseminate correct information through media. I think, you are wise enough to take your next step regarding this article (http://www.hindustantimes.com/Dance-like-a-Sattriya-woman/Article1-583325.aspx). [Assam] If We Do the Math
The math is incorrect -- 20% of 28,054 crore CANNOT BE 56,108 crore. That is 200% of 28,054 crore. About your question -- You should ask to those who publish the corruption index -- like Nicholas Charron, The University of Gothenburg, Sweden OR Transparency International. They might want to change their method based on your suggestion. *** The following from ToI: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/events-tournaments/commonwealth-games/top-stories/Rs-28054-crore-spent-on-Commonwealth-Games-Reddy/articleshow/6282261.cms Now if we do the math, assuming ONLY 20/80 ( as opposed to the usual 60/40, stolen/used ratio), then 20% of Rs. 280,540,000,000 is Rs. 56,108 crores, likely stolen. If it is only 10/90, even then it would be a staggering Rs. 28,054 crores. Now then, if we compare the total ANNUAL corruption loss in Assam and the total ONE TIME loss in the Corruptwealth Games ( you heard it here first) undertaken by the Center, it should tell us where the WORST corruption takes place. Or would it? cm Rs 28,054 crore spent on Commonwealth Games: Reddy PTI, Aug 9, 2010, 05.57pm IST NEW DELHI: Seeking cooperation from all quarters for making the Commonwealth Games a success, Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy on Monday said a total of Rs 28,054 crore have been spent on the games out of which Rs 16,560 crore was given to the Delhi Government for upgrading the capital infrastructure and building of various stadia. Making an intervention during a debate in the Lok Sabha on the Commonwealth Games, Reddy said of the total of money given to the Delhi Government, only Rs 670 crore has been spent directly on the games -- on building stadia. The rest of the money has been spent on infrastructure development of the capital, which is not directly linked to the games, he said. Giving a break-up of the money spent, the minister said, the Delhi Government has spent on various projects which includes Rs 650 crore for street scraping, Rs 900 crore for development bus depots, Rs 3,000 crore for extension of Metro, Rs 18,000 crore for augmenting DTC bus services and Rs 3,700 crore on flyovers and bridges. Of the Rs 11,494 crore spent by the centre, Rs 2.934 crore was spent on sports infrastructure and Rs 678 crore on training of teams, while Rs 182 crore has been given to MTNL, Rs 827.85 crore to the Ministry of Urban Development, Rs 487.57 to Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Rs 747 crore to Health Ministry. Reddy said the government has also given Rs 2,394 crore as loan to the organising committee, which is to be returned by them after the games. Defending the huge amount of money spent, he said most of the money has been spent of infrastructure development which will remain as the country's legacy long after the games are over. If you furnish and paint your house before your daughter's wedding, then the money spent on that cannot be said to be part of the dowry, he said. Appealing to all parties to come together and make the games a success, he said, All of us, cutting across party lines, should rise to make the games successful and spectacular. Asserting that Government will ensure that the corrupt are pursued to the end of the earth, Reddy said, we all know that the CVC and other constitutional bodies do their job, but if every primary observation is blown up to a scam, then we cannot function. I don't say that corruption has not taken place. No one can say that. All irregularities will be inquired into exhaustively, he said. I therefore say with confidence that we will be staging the best Commonwealth Games in history. Some people took the position that a country like India, which has a lot of poverty, should not have hosted the Commonwealth Games, the minister said, adding that though he begged to differ he respected their ideological position. But with only a month left, this should not be raised, he said. Replying to BJP member Kirti Azad comparing him with Mahabharata epic character Bhishm Pitamaha, Reddy said as of now he would like to be focused like Arjun. Reassuring the House that the projects will be ready before the games, he said, the event can be organised even now. The Delhi Government has also spent Rs 400 crore on parking facilities, Rs 200 crore on communications and IT and Rs 2,000 crore on power plants, he said. Reddy said most of the projects will be completed by August 31, barring the Barapullah Nallah project which would be over only by September. ___ assam mailing list assam@assamnet.org http://assamnet.org/mailman/listinfo/assam_assamnet.org

[Assam] An open letter to the Prime Minister
In response to ABSU's recent demand for a separate Bodoland,An Assamese kharkhowa, inhabitant of Baksa district, wrote a letter addressed to the PM demanding a separate state for himself.Read and enjoy. KJD Dear Mr Prime Minister, I am 30 years old, fat, educated and I want my own state. To achieve this objective I have decided to proceed on a fast immediately... after my next masor tenga meal, that is. (Considering my body mass index and fondness for trans fats, I have deemed this the most apt way to protest.) I now intend to break bread only after my 2-bedroom flat in Baksa district, the heartland of Bodos, is declared a state. The state will be known as Kalita Pradesh and its capital will be Kalita nagar -- which is what I will name my living room. The official language will be heavily accented English spoken with a lisp. I have decided to go in for this drastic move after discrimination against me based on my language, appearance, superior intellect and personal hygiene. I request you to consider my case vis-a-vis ABSU's demand for a state exclusively for the Bodos. My state abounds in man-made and (cow-made) resources, including manure from my potted plants and state-of-the-art sanitary fittings. I intend to stand for CM and am confident that the residents -- my wife, my dog and the affectionate house mosquitoes -- will cast their vote in my favour. Mr Prime Minster, I appeal to you to consider my case at the earliest. After Bodoland,Kalita Pradesh would become India's 30th state (if Gorkhaland, Bundelkhand, Harit Pradesh etc don't beat me to it). Thirty is such a nice, round number, don't you think? Since you are handing states around, why not add one more? While we are at it, let me bring to your notice that my pan-wala, my dhobi and a rather irritable bull who sleeps on the middle of a neighbouring road, all want their own states. They all allege discrimination and are all threatening to go on fast. I appeal to you sir, let's break up this beautiful state, known as Assam since time immemorial, at the earliest. Words like unity has slipped into obsolescence. Why learn from the West. We don't care about Germany uniting or half of Europe becoming European Union. After all, we are the smartest race in the world. Let's have a new slogan: Be a Bodo,Kalita or Ahom first and break Assam into pieces. Sincerely, Biplob Kalita. ___ assam mailing list assam@assamnet.org http://assamnet.org/mailman/listinfo/assam_assamnet.org
Re: [Assam] since when has sattriya become a 'tribal' dance?
One Ms. Usha Rai, while speaking on the occasion of Kamala Kanta Saikia Memorial Lectures, pointed out that the journalists are more given to reporting lives and life-styles of Bollywood actors than giving any importance to the peasant suicides affecting the society adversely. The reason being sensationalism that sells. Just to suggest that James Bond has reached India, they show the banks of river Ganges in Varanasi, where snake-charmer Vijay Amritraj is busy with a cobra, mendicants showing different tricks, fire-eaters displaying their skills, scantily clad ladies with vermillion on foeheads taking a dip in the river and Bond getting into a three-wheeler taxi to reach Taj Mahal immediately. The touch of India! It sells. It is commerce. There is no reason to take offence; the description of Satriya as tribal dance must have been deliberate to perpetuate the brand of the north-east. It's rank commercialism of our times. kamal deka kjit.deka at gmail.com The very job description of a scribe is to investigate,do home work and bring the truth out into the open for public consumption. It sure makes my hackles rise to think of those numbskulls/half-baked/uncouth Indian journos, who do not give even half a hoot when it comes to Assam-related news being reported. Re: [Assam] An open letter to the Prime Minister
There is nothing amusing about this mindless piece of tripe. Should our letter writer have had the desire or the wherewithal to inquire about the REASONS why everyone wants a state of his own, then he would not have had the reason to write this piece. Furthermore, HAD the editorial ranks of the rag had any clue about it themselves, they would not have found it worthy to publish it. Last but not the least, I am terribly surprised that you Kamal, being one of the rare few amongst us who has the ability to analyze things enough and the integrity ( even if only every now and then), to acknowledge the real reasons for the state of affairs in India, found this piece worthy enough to circulate as something meaningful or noteworthy. cm On Aug 10, 2010, at 7:07 PM, kamal deka wrote: e In response to ABSU's recent demand for a separate Bodoland,An Assamese kharkhowa, inhabitant of Baksa district, wrote a letter addressed to the PM demanding a separate state for himself.Read and enjoy. There were communal clash between Bodo ethnic group Muslim. And what those Bodo claimed? They claimed it as Assamese vs Bangladeshi. While the entire incident started from a marriage between a Muslim boy a Bodo Girl, which turned into communal clash and resulted the 30 October, 2008 blast(Anybody want to ask me how?).
