Anna Hazare and his merry band seem to have triggered off a tidal wave of anger, beyond their imagination and beyond the issue of the government’s lokpal vs the jan lokpal. The breaking point seems to have been one mega scam after the other in which the government acted only when push came to several shoves. This explains why young students, middle class housewives, the Indian diaspora and the elderly have all come out to stand up and be counted. And in these troubled waters, political sharks of different hues have begun circling sensing the big kill ahead. In scenes reminiscent of the Jayaprakash Narayan movement which bought a mighty prime minister like Indira Gandhi to her knees, this hitherto largely unheard of man from Ralegan Siddhi seems to have tapped a vein of dormant discontent against a system which now seems at odds with the people it is meant for. What they don’t realise is that had they been in power and things had come to such a head, they would be equally vulnerable to a public which refuses to be cowed down anymore. The era when charismatic and silver-tongued leaders could change the public mood with just one stirring sentence appears to be over. The Prime Minister, well-intentioned though he might be, was hard put to make himself heard above the din in Parliament when he tried to assert the supremacy of elected bodies as opposed to street corner rabble rousers. He certainly had a point, the problem is that no one is willing to listen anymore. To hope that he will rise to Churchillian oratory is Panglossian to say the least. The government can no longer put people off by promising to act after one or other committee looks into matters. Given the numbers on the street, the government’s time starts now. A magnificent gesture by the PM, a workable solution, a willingness to allow democratic dissent, a signal that it will engage in meaningful dialogue are just some of the things which could see people go back to business as usual. Our role is to call the risks objectively, with transparency, and that’s what we try to do to fulfill our role and that’s what our job is for the benefit of investors, Deven Sharma told CNBC Monday. He pointed out that going from a triple-A to double-A-plus rating doesn’t mean [the U.S. is] going to default, it just means its more risky today than a year ago. SP factored in the political process because it speaks to how the fiscal, economic and monetary choices are being made, Sharma said, adding he was pleased by President Obama's speech today addressing the need for U.S. lawmakers to have a new sense of urgency to tackle long-term deficit spending. SP's view was based on a number of factors including projections of rising debt levels. Sharma said despite cuts mandated by last week's debt-ceiling legislation, the U.S. 2015 debt level will be $14 trillion, or 25 percent higher than today. The fact is, the debt levels are still doubling from where we are today and that is an issue to address, he said. He said SP regretted its part in the subprime mortgage mess. Clearly the housing declines were much more severe than we forecasted or anticipated, he said, and the rating agency has made many changes in putting new checks and balances in our organization. We are committed to the reform process. Sharma said the drop in markets Monday was not necessarily a reflection of the SP downgrade. The market reacts in many ways, sometimes unexplainable, but our ratings really address the fundamentals of the creditworthiness, he said. The market could be reacting to the fact there is a slowdown in economic growth. It could be reacting to what’s happening in Europe. There was no line to wait on, in fact, they called us to the counter - right away - what an experience! ! It can be said that the overall standard of Delhi airport is one of the 1st class airports of the world now. The shops are ample in numbers and items and also are beautifully decorated with color and light. The whole airport is splendidly furnished that includes beautiful live plants and decorative items with very good taste. The bathroom scenario is good as well, the ones in airline lounge (at least the one that I travelled with) are maintained well - and yes, they are very clean and dry. I am just happy and was very impressed and see a brighter future. I read some article about reducing the poverty level in Brazil and Mexico, specifically, will send the link when I find an electronic copy. It was a successful trip, we feel we've achieved a lot in fulfilling our dream of making someone else's life a little better - with one step at a time. We also did some sightseeing for ourselves. Overall, it was a hectic but a good trip. It's great to be back home though! As I said above, without Jugal's help, this wouldn't have been possible. Even back then, it was like 'Handel Mora Gari', perhaps even worse. Sometimes, mail will get stuck in the send queue on my machine. I'd logon as root and push it through, restart the machine -- anything to get it going. When the list got reasonably large, Jugal and I split the list so that each machine didn't have to send too many messages out (a sort of load balancing); our pointers back to each other luckily never got into an infinite loop! Honestly, it got to the point of being too much work for me to run the 'handle Mora gari' by mid 1990s, I felt that it's better to step down and let others manage it.
