The sale of the land “posed a security threat” to strategic army installations and the airport in the valley, around which this contested piece of land is located, The Indian Express reported. Northeast: A medium intensity earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 shook the Northeast region on Friday evening. The Central Seismological Observatory in Shillong, Meghalaya, noted that the epicenter of the earthquake was near Nagaon in the state of Assam. There were reports of some damage to property but no injury to human life, The Assam Tribune wrote. West Bengal: After a spate of recent controversies Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is trying to prevent further damage to her party’s image by issuing guidelines to her party members, The Telegraph reported. The list includes directives such as: “follow the people, listen to them,”; “stop at all traffic intersections. If I can, why can’t you?” and “work more, talk less.” Ms. Banerjee has also asked party members not to send her text messages during off-business hours seeking appointments, the newspaper reported. Jharkhand: Chief Minister Arjun Munda, his wife and four others had a narrow escape when their helicopter crashed in the state capital of Ranchi, due to a technical snag. The passengers suffered minor injures. (Prabhat Khabar) Maharashtra: “This a huge scam; children’s future is at stake. If parents admit their children in such schools, we do not take any responsibility for them,” said P.R. Pawar, the education inspector for the western suburbs of Mumbai. Mr. Pawar spoke about the 29 unauthorized primary and secondary schools he found in a recent inspection (Daily News & Analysis). The schools, which have been running for the past 10 years without proper approvals, have been issued a notice from the education department asking them to shut down, the newspaper reported. Andhra Pradesh: India’s top watchdog agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation, froze the bank accounts of a newspaper, a television channel and infrastructure business on Tuesday — companies owned by Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, a member of Parliament and the president of the regional political party, YSR Congress. The investigation agency has so far filed three charge sheets against Mr. Reddy in an illegal assets case. The attack comes just a few days after an announcement by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to remove security bunkers from Srinagar city in the following months. (Hindustan Times) Assam: A rhino calf, separated from its mother, escaped the confines of the Manas National Park in the state and strayed into the neighboring township of Sarbhog and attacked some locals, the Nagaland Post reported. Forest officials are trying their best “to chase the rhino away from the human habitations without causing any harm to it and tame it and release it back at Manas,” an official told the newspaper. West Bengal: Business investors are wary of the state government’s newly introduced draft clause in land-lease agreements. They fear the new clause may require them to implement new relief packages “even after they have met the obligations while launching a project,” The Telegraph reported. A senior government official played down the retrospective implications. “The spirit of the clause is that whenever a company starts R&R [rehabilitation and resettlement] work, the prevailing law at that time will be applicable. Rehabilitation and resettlement will not be retrospective,” he told the newspaper. Bihar: A ban on the use of plastic bags inside the Sanjay Gandhi Zoo in the state capital Patna, will be applicable starting June 5. State authorities are taking steps to check the environmental degradation within the zoo, and visitors will be able to buy environment-friendly bags as an alternative, at the zoo. (Prabhat Khabar) Maharashtra: In a horrific train accident three people were killed and fifteen injured in Mumbai on Thursday (Indian Express). The passengers on the local train were leaning from an over-crowded coach of a suburban train when an iron pole along the tracks swept them off the train. V. A. Malegaokar, the chief public relations officer of the Central Railway, said the tragedy was the result of “extreme overcrowding” of the railways. “The trains are extremely overcrowded and there are no violations of norms by the Railways,” Mr. Malegaonkar told the newspaper. Gujarat: Accounting for two-thirds of the nation’s total solar power generation of nearly 900 megawatts, Gujarat made headlines this week as the largest solar power producer in India (The Hindu). The state declared its Solar Power Policy in 2009, and within three years the government of Gujarat has attracted 80 billion rupees, or $1.5 billion, worth of investment in solar power. Andhra Pradesh: Eight contract workers and their supervisor were trapped in the Shantikhani coal mine in Adilabad district for 22 hours after a technical snag occurred in the elevator that was carrying them. (CNN-IBN) Tamil Nadu: On Friday a retired army officer, K. Ramaraj, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Chennai for the killing of a 13-year-old boy last year. Gujarat: Jewelers in the state have suffered losses of about 15,000 crore, or 15 billion rupees, due to the nationwide strike by jewelers protesting the hike in custom and excise duties on gold, proposed in last week’s annual budget, Daily Bhaskar reports. Maharashtra: The federal Health Ministry has released data that reports 69 cases of swine flu in the state. A total of 129 cases have been reported, including 27 from Andhra Pradesh, 28 from Rajasthan and five from Karnataka. The report points out that 12 people died of the H1N1 virus during the first three weeks of March, including six from Maharashtra (Daily News & Analysis). Odisha: Maoists have kidnapped a legislator from the state’s ruling party Biju Janata Dal. The incident follows the recent abduction of two Italian tourists, who have been held hostage by the Maoists for more than a week. For the release of the hostages the rebels have laid down 13 conditions, which include “a ban on the visit of tourists to the tribal areas; halt on anti Maoist operations, and release of several prisoners,” Odisha Today reports. Tamil Nadu: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa took credit for India’s vote in favor of the United States-sponsored resolution before the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), promoting reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka. She said the constant pressure she put on the central government through a state resolution, letters to the prime minister and demand by her political party’s legislators helped achieve the result (The Hindu). Kerala: A veteran leader of the Left and an eminent parliamentarian died Thursday. C. K. Chandrappan, 76, the state secretary of the Communist Party of India, had been undergoing treatment for cancer.
