Mix of Quake Aid and Preaching Stirs Concern

January 22, 2005
 By DAVID ROHDE

MORAKETIYA, Sri Lanka, Jan. 19 -A dozen Americans walked
into a relief camp here, showering bereft parents and
traumatized children with gifts, attention and affection.
They also quietly offered camp residents something else:
Jesus.

The Americans, who all come from one church in Texas, have
staged plays detailing the life of Jesus and had children
draw pictures of him, camp residents said. They have told
parents who lost children that they should still believe in
God, and held group prayers where they tried to heal a
partly paralyzed man and a deaf 12year-old girl.

The attempts at proselytizing are angering local Christian
leaders, who worry that they could provoke a violent
backlash against Christians in Sri Lanka, a predominantly
Buddhist country that is already a religious tinderbox.

Last year, Buddhist hard-liners attacked the offices of the
World Vision Christian aid group and vandalized or
threatened churches and pastors 75 times. They accuse
Christians of using money and social programs to cajole and
coerce conversions.

Most American groups, including those affiliated with
religious organizations, strictly avoid mixing aid and
missionary work. But scattered reports of proselytizing in
Sri Lanka; Indonesia, which is predominantly Muslim; and
India, with large Hindu and Muslim populations, are
arousing concerns that the good will spread by the American
relief efforts may be undermined by resentment.

The Rev. Sarangika Fernando, a local Methodist minister,
witnessed one of the prayer sessions in Sri Lanka and
accused the Americans of acting unethically with
traumatized people. "They said, 'In the name of Jesus, she
must be cured!' " he said. "As a priest, I was really
upset."

The Americans in Sri Lanka belong to the Antioch Community
Church, an evangelical church based in Waco, Tex. Two
members of the church were arrested, and accused of
proselytizing, by the Taliban in Afghanistan in August
2001. When the United States invaded the country several
months later, pro-American Northern Alliance forces freed
the women, who church officials say did speak with Afghans
about their personal "relationship with Jesus."

The Antioch Community Church is one of a growing number of
evangelical groups that believe in mixing aidgiving with
discussing religion, an approach that older, more
established Christian aid groups like Catholic Relief
Services call unethical.

In Sri Lanka, alarmed local Christian leaders say
proselytizing at such a sensitive time could reverse the
grass-roots interfaith cooperation that has emerged since
the tsunami and endanger Christians, who make up 7 percent
of the population. The country also has sizable Hindu and
Muslim minorities.

The Rev. Duleep Fernando, a Methodist minister based in
Colombo, the capital, brought the Americans to the camp
here. Mr. Fernando said they had described themselves as
humanitarian aid workers. He and other Sri Lankan Christian
leaders say raising religion with traumatized refugees is
unethical.

"We have told them this is not right, but now we don't have
any control over them," said Mr. Fernando, who called the
group's Web site postings "unnecessarily explosive."

"This is a dangerous situation," he said.

In Indonesia
last week, reports that a missionary group named WorldHelp
planned to raise 300 Muslim tsunami orphans in a Christian
children's home in Jakarta brought an outcry from Muslims.
The group later said it had never had custody of the
children.

Sri Lankan refugees, camp administrators and church
officials said the Americans here had identified themselves
only as a humanitarian aid group. In an interview here on
Wednesday, Pat Murphy, 49, a leader of the team, said the
group was a nongovernmental organization, and not a church
group. "It's an NGO," Mr. Murphy said. "Just your plain
vanilla NGO that does aid work."

But the

President of Harvard Tells Women's Panel He's Sorry

January 21, 2005
By SAM DILLON and SARA RIMER

The Harvard University president, Lawrence H. Summers,
apologized personally on Thursday to a group of
distinguished women professors as he battled to convince
the university's faculty of his commitment to diversity
after remarks suggesting that women may be innately less
able to succeed in math and science careers.

"We cut right to the chase," said Lizabeth Cohen, a history
professor who participated in the meeting. "He regrets what
he said, and I hope that he will prove that by taking
constructive steps. We're going to be in intense
discussions with him over the next week."

Dr. Summers requested the meeting with a dozen members of
the group, the Standing Committee on Women, after it
reproached Dr. Summers in a letter on Tuesday, saying his
remarks to a Jan. 14 academic conference "did not serve our
institution well" and had reinforced an institutional
culture at Harvard that has made it difficult to recruit
top women scholars.

"Larry said it was a good meeting," said Lucie McNeil, Dr.
Summers's spokeswoman. "He apologized, and then they moved
on to a discussion of a variety of steps the university can
take to address diversity issues in the coming days."

Other members of the Harvard community said in interviews
that Dr. Summers was exploring ways of offering concrete
concessions to women - perhaps guarantees of new hiring.
But neither Professor Cohen nor Ms. McNeil would confirm
such a discussion after the meeting.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Summers got yet another indication
of just how upset faculty members were over his remarks
when more than 100 of the about 600 professors on Harvard's
Faculty of Arts and Sciences added their names to a letter
endorsing the reproachful letter sent him by the standing
committee. Howard Georgi, a former chairman of the physics
department, said he collected the names over the past two
days by issuing a mass e-mail message to a faculty Caucus
for Gender Equity.

Many members of the caucus spread the word to colleagues,
and Dr. Georgi received an outpouring of e-mail messages
from faculty members wishing to register their concern to
Dr. Summers, he said.

"In two days, at a time when faculty are busy finishing
exams and dispersing for intersession, the response was
rather remarkable," Dr. Georgi said in the letter to Dr.
Summers, which he delivered to the Harvard president's
office yesterday, along with the list of some 120
professors who had endorsed it. "I believe that this
outpouring of support is important. It is my hope that it
will be useful as part of the foundation for a broad-based
effort to eliminate hidden discrimination in all its
forms."

Dr. Georgi had e-mailed Dr. Summers earlier in the week,
saying he thought that it had been a mistake for the
Harvard president to speak as an intellectual provocateur
during his remarks at the academic conference, forgetting
that they would be interpreted as the beliefs of the
university's leader. Dr. Summers phoned Dr. Georgi,
acknowledging that he had made a mistake, Dr. Georgi said.

At the Jan. 14 conference, at the National Bureau of
Economic Research, a nonprofit economic research
organization in Cambridge, Dr. Summers angered several of
the women present, one of whom walked out, by suggesting
that innate gender differences may explain why fewer women
succeed in science and math careers. The meeting was taped,
but Harvard has declined to make either the tape or a
transcript public. Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon,
who has held hearings on a federal law guaranteeing equal
educational opportunities for women, said he called Dr.
Summers yesterday and found him contrite.

"He very much regrets what he said at that conference,"
Senator Wyden said. "He knows that he clearly crossed the
line."

Senator Wyden said he had worked with him in Washington
when Dr. Summers was treasury secretary in the Clinton
administration, and had called the Harvard president to
"use the opportunity to discuss ways of promoting equity
for women."

Harvard Chief Defends His Talk on Women

January 18, 2005
 By SAM DILLON

The president of Harvard University, Lawrence H. Summers,
who offended some women at an academic conference last week
by suggesting that innate differences in sex may explain
why fewer women succeed in science and math careers, stood
by his comments yesterday but said he regretted if they
were misunderstood.

"I'm sorry for any misunderstanding but believe that
raising questions, discussing multiple factors that may
explain a difficult problem, and seeking to understand how
they interrelate is vitally important," Dr. Summers said in
an interview.

Several women who participated in the conference said
yesterday that they had been surprised or outraged by Dr.
Summers's comments, and Denice D. Denton, the chancellor
designate of the University of California, Santa Cruz,
questioned Dr. Summers sharply during the conference,
saying she needed to "speak truth to power."

Nancy Hopkins, a professor of biology at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology who once led an investigation of
sex discrimination there that led to changes in hiring and
promotion, walked out midway through Dr. Summers's remarks.

"When he started talking about innate differences in
aptitude between men and women, I just couldn't breathe
because this kind of bias makes me physically ill," Dr.
Hopkins said. "Let's not forget that people used to say
that women couldn't drive an automobile."

The Boston Globe first reported yesterday about Dr.
Summers's remarks and the stir they created.

Not all reactions were negative. Some female academics and
the organizer of the two-day conference that Dr. Summers
addressed on Friday at the National Bureau of Economic
Research, a nonprofit economic research organization in
Cambridge, defended the remarks as a well-intentioned
effort to speak candidly about the persistent
underrepresentation of women in university departments of
mathematics, engineering and physical sciences.

"A lot of people who absolutely disagreed with him were not
irritated, and he said again and again, 'I'm here to
provoke you,' " said Richard Freeman, an economics
professor at Harvard who directs the bureau's labor studies
program and invited Dr. Summers to speak. "He's very good
at stimulating debate, but he cares deeply about increasing
diversity in the science and engineering workforces,
especially since we have many more women getting Ph.D.'s in
science and engineering than ever before."

About 50 academics from across the nation, many of them
economists, participated in the conference, "Diversifying
the Science and Engineering Workforce: Women,
Underrepresented Minorities, and their S. & E. Careers."
Dr. Summers arrived after a morning session and addressed a
working lunch, speaking without notes. No transcript was
made because the conference was designed to be
off-the-record so that participants could speak candidly
without fear of public misunderstanding or disclosure
later.

In his presentation, Dr. Summers addressed the question of
why so few women were on math and engineering faculties at
top research universities.

"I began by saying that the whole issue of gender equality
was profoundly important and that we are taking major steps
at Harvard to combat passive discrimination," he recalled
in yesterday's interview. "Then I wanted to add some
provocation to what I understand to be basically a social
science discussion."

He discussed several factors that could help explain the
underrepresentation of women. The first factor, he said,
according to several participants, was that top positions
on university math and engineering faculties require
extraordinary commitments of time and energy, with many
professors working 80-hour weeks in the same punishing
schedules pursued by top lawyers, bankers and business
executives. Few married women with children are willing to
accept such sacrifices, he said.

Dr. Hopkins said, "I didn't disagree, but didn't like the
way he presented that point because I like to work 80 hours
a week, and I know a lot of women who work that hard."

In citing a second factor, Dr. Summers cited research
showing that more high school boys than girls t
