I must admit I'd never heard of IBM Installation Manager. Neither had I, but from the youtube video above, it seems that the products that are Installed by the Installation Manager are actually installed in a two step process. The first step is to install the zip files with SMP/E. The second is to install the contents of the zip files into the appropriate Unix directories with the Installation Manager. I don't see how this could be something that could replace SMP/E. -- Tom Marchant

Is the null character termination of execio a new thing, or just something I was not aware of before this? Unfortunately, with the new crowd of pc-minted programmers taking over in the mainframe realm, we are likely to see more and more datasets with the accursed null string in it. Not null character, but null string What's wrong with null strings? Please use a more meaningful Subject: than ASSEMBLER-LIST Digest. I am out of the office until Tuesday - Dan Smith is in charge in my place. Thanks, Joey
PTF level in SYSPRINT? (was: ASSEMBLER-LIST Digest ...)
No John, it is not a PC/Unix/Linux conspiracy I posses a book that was published on 2006 by Gabe Gargiulo and it is NOT the first version of that book (and it is not a hard-to-read manual from IBM, just a common basic book for self learning of Rexx.) The name of this book it The Rexx Language on TSO. On page 160, the author put in a frame (for extra emphasis:) and here is what Gabe says in simple English: The devious '*' EXECIO * DISKW OUTFILE I've seen an * used in writing. I do not use it, because it requires a null line to signify 'end of file'. What if you wanted to write a null line? You wouldn't be able to. The issue of '*' in EXECIO DISKW is well known, well documented and is problematic for few reasons, but I think Gabe summarized it from both ends, if you use '*', you both need a null line lest Rexx won't know were to stop... and you cannot print an empty line (i.e. length 0).
