Re: [asterisk-biz] Looking for a good stateside VoIP provider...

2008-08-27 Thread Michael S. White
Hello everyone..

Since this was a pretty popular post I though I'd write about my experience
in selecting our new provider
Teliax.

When we started testing with Teliax I was having issues with the service-
Having not contacted support
(A common problem amongst know it alls like myself) I figured they were
probably out of the running.

Deciding to give it one more shot, I posted a message to their forum which
was answered within an hour
by David Aldworth. Apparently from what I can gather David is one of, or THE
owner of the company.  After
a few email volleys and a phone call (on Sunday even) David had me convinced
that the issue was on my
end. And he was right.

To make a long story short- Teliax has been working great for us. Our
numbers were ported in less than
10 days , their pricing is more than competitive, and the service/support we
received has been world class.

Thanks David, Ben,Geoff, and everyone who offered comments to my original
post.

We've been looking @ Vitelity and Teliax- can't seem to get teliax working
properly with our * boxes so they are probably out.

Internally we use...

*   Switchvox

*   Asterisk Business Edition

Factors:

*   Need 10+ Channels

* Reasonable rates- Not looking for the "Cheapest" necessarily

* Reliability - Any user stories are appreciated (looking for feedback
from actual customers)

* Good to Great Customer Service (looking for feedback from actual
customers)

Lastly - If there are any .e4 resellers out there that are pitching services
and can bring a good option to the table we'd gladly become your customer
too.

We as well use Vitelity as one of our outbound providers to the PSTN,
and have had much better luck with them than with some of our other
providers. Incoming, we don't use at the moment, although that's liable
to change as our business evolves (most of our inbound is for DIDs
outside the US).

Anyone can jump into a conversation and yell "X Provider Sucks! Use
Provider Y"But backing that up requires more than just a random
drive-by interjection.

I have been using the Polycom 8002 Wifi Phone for about a month... I am
pleased
With its battery life and all around ease of use. We have also deployed
about 20
Of these at a few customer sites and the feedback has been all positive.

It doesn't require any special equipment outside of a wireless 802.11b/g
access point that supports WMM (WiFi Multimedia)

I am looking for someone with comprehensive experience using the IVR
scripting tools built into Switchvox. If you have solid experience on the
Switchvox platform, specifically using their IVR builder, and are interested
in a paying gig working mostly with this tool set, shoot me an email. This
would be a remote type position, several hours per week likely.

Unless your in a hurry you can just lurk on ebay. I usually pick off 601s
for no more than $150 with shipping. Used of course, but in box with all
parts.

good for handfree use.

Lightweight and 50meters coverage, about 150 feet, DECT in some ways it
easier to use for cordless operations. I think if you review their web site
www.snom.com their are easy ways to configure etc.

very resonable pricing too.

And equally important, can they be provisioned in bulk via Linux?

Most of the SIP phones I've used, both wired and wireless, can be
configured to download provisioning information via plain text or XML

If it does you would never know as Switchvox gives you no access to CLI – At
first I though this was a limitation… Then I realized that the people at

I've come across some GUIs in the past where if I made a change in a config
file, the GUI would overwrite that change. I guess they completely re-create
the config file every time a "submit" is made. Some things are just easier
to do in the config files than in the GUI, and I was wondering if Switchvox
had this problem...

Dave,

It is great that you looked at what we offer and “got it”. You are
absolutely correct – it is a lot more than just branding and minor
customization. Thirdlane was built with the idea that VARs and consultants
need a system that can be tailored to the (ever changing) customers’ needs.

Asterisk is an extremely versatile and powerful platform and our goal when
building the GUI was not to constrain this power. System extension
capabilities were built-in from the start and are integrated into the GUI.
We also made the software as open as possible both in terms of the dialplan
and configuration files visibility and the deployment environment. It can be
deployed on different OSs (various flavors of Linux and FreeBSD), versions
of Asterisk (1.2.X and 1.4.X), with a variety of phones (auto-provisioning
for Aastra, Snom, Cisco, Polycom, Linksys), it is packaged as either a
Webmin module or a complete CentOS based distribution. Obviously, this
openness makes it harder for us to support it (we are doing our best as the
customers base is growing), but gives VARs and consultants the ability to
add real value through deep customization and possible tailoring to a
vertical, beyond the installation and configuration of a basic PBX. That
said, the basic functionality is also there, and is not any harder to use
than any other Asterisk GUI.

There is nothing wrong with Switchvox and the “bulletproof” approach – we
just offer something different. Isn’t Asterisk about having a choice anyway?

Best regards,

Alex

Not trying to hijack this thread… but

“(Like a key system)”

SwitchVox/Asterisk is an IP-PBX – The functionality is quite different from
a Key System, especially from the end-user’s perspective.

If you have a customer that demands key system functionality, I’ve figured
out a nice work around for using SwitchVox free edition to compete w/ a key
systems SLA feature…

out with fixes for it ? IMHO there is no perfect human being.

Re: [asterisk-biz] KSU Killers??

2007-10-04 Thread Michael S. White
3COM gives credibility to Asterisk? Maybe... But my guess is that they
needed something in their arsenal that can actually compete with Cisco...
R&D cost was weighed against a commercial Asterisk license for their
appliance and well, you know the rest.

3COM = Sales Slump, buy-out/ Going Private
Asterisk/Digium = Growing like a weed.

Some interesting product announcements lately. Priced to pretty much kill
the traditional KSU market if people can get past the whole SLA thing or
lack of it in the case of Asterisk.

The 8FXO port model is under $900US.

And 3COM just announced they are rebranding the Asterisk Appliance for their

Alright, let us think this through shall we, the OP says "For product
details, please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] " and the subject says "BroadTel".
So I googled Broadtel and the first entry I see:

BroadTel - The world's largest manufacturer of NEUTRAL VoIP ... - 5:11am
BroadTel delivers full featured, low cost phone call services through your
existing broadband Internet connection to residential and small business
users ...
www.broad-tel.com/ - 4k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this

I wonder if this is the same people. To put your mind at ease, it is, I
emailed asking for detail and received them, thank you Vincent, and the data
sheet confirms what was already pretty obvious. The website is
www.broad-tel.com and the product mentioned by the OP is not on the site,
but the part numbering scheme is similar to existing products.

Robert Augustyn wrote:

Hi all,

We have put together a firmware for a range of inexpensive routers.

It has been configured to provide optimum VoIP performance.

We have internally tested it for number of months and it looks very good.

You should be able to run it easily with 20+ phones on local network ( we
still did not hit the upper limit ) assuming that you have bandwidth.

Your VoIP will get prioritized over other types of traffic.

You should be able to talk, download files and run torrents at the same time
with no visible degradation of the VoIP voice quality.

It will be delivered ready to upload with all your configurations, which you
will have to provide to us.

We will custom build firmware for your configuration.

We just ask you to upload it, test it and provide feedback.

If you are interested ( sorry only first 10 will be accepted ) please
contact me at firmware at linqone dot com and we will send you the set of
questions we need you to answer before we can build a solution for you.

Thanks,

 This firmware will work on:

*   Linksys WRT54G v1-v4, WRT54GS v1-v4,
 WRT54GL v1.x,
 WRTSL54GS (no USB
support)
*   Buffalo
 WHR-G54S,
 WHR-HP-G54, WZR-G54,
WBR2-G54
*   Asus
 WL500G Premium
(no USB support)

This will not work on Linksys WRT54G/GS v5-v7 or newer WRT54G/GS routers.

If you do not have any of the above routers you can get one for UNDER $40
shipped at:

http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/Search.do?c=1&context=&keyword=Buffalo+WHR-G5
4S&searchSection=All&go.x=11&go.y=10

How do I find my Linksys WRT54G/WRT54GS/WRT54GL's version?

Look at the bottom side of the router to check for the version number, or
compare the first 4 characters of the serial number with the following list:

CDF0/CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0
CDF2/CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1
CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0
CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2
CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0
CDF9 = WRT54G v3.1
CDFA = WRT54G v4.0

CGN0/CGN1 = WRT54GS v1.0
CGN2 = WRT54GS v1.1
CGN3 = WRT54GS v2.0
CGN4 = WRT54GS v2.1
CGN5 = WRT54GS v3.0
CGN6 = WRT54GS v4.0

CL7A = WRT54GL v1.0
CL7B = WRT54GL v1.1

If it's not listed above, and it's not a WRT54GL, it's not supported.

Sincerely,

Robert Augustyn

company that provides VoIP termination can accept a VoIP call and terminate
it directly to a Tier-1 TDM carrier like Level3.

Nobody should EVER be harvesting address from mailing lists, period.

RE: [asterisk-biz] I need your skiils, but I can't hire you

2006-01-21 Thread Michael S. White
Need great phone support for your customer? Just bundle Asterisk Business
Edition in to your solution.

Two things happen when you do this.

(1) You help support Asterisk and Digium

(2) You guarantee great support for your client.

I like the phone support idea but I think that Digium is on the right
path. If you don't draw the line somewhere you end up either not fixing
the fault which leads to unhappy customers and therefore a bad mouthing
experience or worst still getting dragged down in a fault that frankly
is not worth fixing for the price.

As for "branded" support; you'll have the same problem. How would the
tech answering the phone know anything about the install he's fixing? It
would take him quite a considerable time to get up to speed before he
could reasonably start working on the fault.

If you agree on a standard set of configs that you'll support and offer
a 2 teired support system, you could fix the easy things like messed up
passwords or mis-spelled statements and then bump the non conforming
ones back to the customer (not the user).

You could then offer "consultant" support exclusively for those that can
demonstrate they are purveyors of Asterisk systems. You shouldn't have
to do so much hand holding here as you'd require a minimum level of
expertise. You'd be acting as more of a mentor rather than a support team.

A final avenue could be training. Offering various levels of Asterisk
training could be a way of ensuring that you have capable customers and
confident end users as well as being a low level money earner.

RE: [asterisk-biz] How much it costs to setup Asterisk and phones?

2006-01-12 Thread Michael S. White
I don't think you are arrogant...

We've been getting $100-$120/hour... We won't even go near a quote or
proposal with out involving either the CFO/CEO, after all nothing is being
budgeted/purchased without their stamp of approval.

The last thing we want to be is the cheap solution! Value doesn't = low
cost... Never has; never will!

This is the best filter for me!

Meeting with the CFO or CEO
Signed NDA

We walk away if we can't get at least one of the above. When we work this
angle the execs appreciate it, because they know up front, that our time is
a valuable commodity and by understanding that principle they feel confident
that we won't waste theirs.

I might work for as little as $50 an hour if the customer buys a prepaid
block of 40 hours at a time.

However, the point of my reply to the OP is that I start charging as
soon as I start working. That includes going over his inadequate
description of the work needed. Some people think I am arrogant because
I don't do free evaluations. My standard "sales proposal" is rather simple:

Ad hoc time - $N per hour(subject to credit approval)
Prepaid block of X hours at Y per hour.

Some prospects find this to be too arrogant but it filters out the ones
who are wasting my time.

I should mention that I don't charge people for calls or meetings where
I discuss my qualifications. I might even give them some free general
advice, especially if they are buying me a good lunch.

Guys, ( and any gals)

This is becoming too much fun, however, I just want to correct one thing, am
i am off for the day.

The Eid Celebration is to remember what Abraham did a long time a go in
obedience of god.

The Bible records God instructing Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac on Mt
Moriah. This was a prophesy in action of Jesus the Messiah being sacrificed
on that same mountain about 1500 years later, only by then the mountain was
renamed Golgotha, and Christians know it as Calvary.

:)

I am enjoying all the FUN Messages coming to me, so keep 'em coming. THOUGH
I won't say to the list, 'cause I don't want to be blamed for turning
asterisk into a religious product :)

make clean install "asterisk-religious"

hehe

I can vouch for Mark - he may be a
frequent poster, but he's not a scammer.  Voice International is one of
the oldest secondary market reseller/brokers of Intel/Dialogic and BrookTrout
telephony boards.  With the advent of VOIP they are likely looking for used
inventory to get into that hardware market.  I have never done business
with Voice International before, but have been well aware of them for many
years, and have never heard anything negative about them, for what it's worth.

RE: [Asterisk-biz] Linksys announcement

2006-01-05 Thread Michael S. White
T1? Not a problem

Since this is a "hosted solution" companies using Linksysone are required to
use one of the authorized Hosted Service Providers--MCI airBand, or
NeoNova...

We looked in to reselling this but it seems that linksys wants resellers to
commit to the demo kit (+$1000) before announcing what it will cost
end-user's for the managed service. Not a huge cap expense but talk about
putting the cart before the horse!

Just my 2 pennies...

This looks like a nice unit. To bad it does not have a T1/E1 Interface
and/or a few more analog ports.
