Not that I'm aware of - best place to ask would be the IAXClient mailing

Probably the closest would be Tim Panton's work - maybe hunt him down :D

Does anybody know any USB phone that I can use as an IAX Client?

The USB phones I saw on the market just behave like an additional
sound card, with some control buttons perhaps, and those will not work
without a software (like twinkle, x-lite...).

The devices that work without PC software usually come with a network
plug instead of USB - the point is that they work without PC, so why use
a USB connection and depend of a PC in that respect?

In my experience (and I only had two cheapo Ebay USB-phones) sound
works without problems _but_ the keys might work or not, seems to be a
bit of luck involved. One of those two phones had the number keys
working, but neither hangup nor dial would do anything, the other
one would not work at all - except the sound, which was OK.

For what I know, an USB phone is just an USB sound device
with a phonelike piece of plastic to hold the mic and
speaker.
So you can use it with every softphone that works with
asterisk.

This is true. I use a Polycom CX100 USB speakerphone device. The
insteresting thing is that I soften run Skype, X-Pro and Firefly on the
same desktop...at the same time. They all use the same device
regardless of where the calls come from. I use Firefly as an IAX soft
phone. X-Pro is SIP. And Skype is completely proprietary. FWIW, the
X-Lite/X-Pro software senses the loss of the device when its unplugged
and switched to the next most sensible device...then restores the use
of the Polycom unit if I plug it back in. Very slick.

Asterisk itself, if properly configured, can work pretty well as an

dial, answer and hangup, as well as reading on the console useful
information about who is calling.

library. I have been working on my own client (an augmentation to the

Same here. Generally an incoming call would go thru immediately after
registration, but not always. Some 5min or more after registration, and
incoming calls almost never show up. SIP client (Xten) is ringing just fine
(on the same computer at the same time - I'm setup on both IAX and SIP), so
it's not NAT/firewall issue.

Oh yes, and I'm almost always behind NAT (the client side, that is).

I have been monitoring the process from both the Asterisk CLI (with IAX2
debug and IAX debug turned on), from Gastman (monitoring call activity),
and from a packet sniffer (unfortunately not Ethereal with the new
plugin).
Trust me on this one - you *really* want to take the time to install
Etheral with the plugin. It makes debugging problems like this much
easier - you'll be able to see whether the client sees the packet,
whether it sends a response, if there's version skew causing INVALID
packets to be sent for certain challenge/responses, etc.

I'd only stick trace code in the iax-client library when you've sniffed
what's going on so you know where to add it. :)

I can, I suppose, add some trace code to the iaxClient library, but I
don't really know where to go in the code to get it to trace/log. I
would like to place it as low as possible -- in the listener function,
then perhaps in the parser.
If anybody knows how to do this, please let me know. My C coding skills
are fairly rusty. Just point out the proper file and function(s) and I
will be on my way.
iaxclient/lib/libiax2/src/iax.c is probably where you'd want to look.
Which functions depends on what's happening. iax_do_event() might be
relevant for outbound packets, for example. You'll have to delve.
