Re: Preludeamals, a puzzle solving game by Aprone

Jeffb, your comment about the story made me chuckle.  When the idea got tossed around that the ending to each level could be some sort of story, I loved the idea.  It would be a great way to add more personality to the game, while also giving me a chance to toss in some fun easter eggs.  When I actually sat down to write a few dozen story pieces, somehow about the work being done on the robotic arm, I drew a blank.  I could write a few things, but after like level 3 there would be nothing new to add.Instead of giving up on the story idea, I started telling the story of 3 random workers at the Lunar-tech research facility.  I don't know why it's funny to me that the story has nothing to do with the game, but when I think of how it will confuse people it makes me laugh.  I seriously don't know why it's funny to me, because when I think about it, it just seems stupid.  More levels are in the works, and more story has already been either written or planned to go along with those additional levels.  It's entirely possible that this seemingly random story actually ends up being about the work on the robot arm.  It might also just continue to be random.  I guess you'll just need to beat every level to know for sure.  Stewie, the audio pans like that because the code treats the room as though it's laid out on a table in front of the player.  The further away you go, the smaller the angle is between the player and the sound.  I've actually thought about changing that, and I may end up doing so in an update. Thanks for spotting those editor bugs.  In the morning I'll work on fixing those and posting a game update.

Also notable: Apple are now selling Humanware braille displays in their Apple Store. Either they haven't got the memo yet, they hope it never happens, or it's a coincidence--a complete coincidence.

I will wait for Seal to create an updated Steam guide before taking any sort of action, with a note on any page saying it's the responsibility of the user running STeam at their own risk, although people in the forum will be willing to help. Maybe that part could be on news articles. I don't know if the forum should be in database descriptions or not.By the way folks, on another note Dark does seem a bit upset at how direct some of you are being. It's strange because I really do see both sides here, I know some of you are annoyed as he closed the topic quite abruptly, but I can also sort of see why he did what he did and it's not necessarily about the Steam element of the topic. It was the way it was headed, it was getting quite heated, at the same time I still think that's the nature of debate and of course stuff like that will happen.

Yes. It might. Screen readers love to do their own preprocessing. As for why it happens, I'm thinking it might be that a rule for emails is somehow conflicting in the synthesizer. Usually, say, when you're reading emails, you get things like 2 Apr, 2015. Somehow the rule is being horribly broken with 2 Aprone, because it's trying to turn the words around, somehow gets lost midway through preprocessing, forgets to change it to second, and we have this result.

Re: Arbitrary Forum Rule

First and foremost, I'd like to thank you Aaron for being open minded enough to have brought the subect of Steam inclusion to light, be it inspired by discussion with various other persons or not. I will apologize for your perfectly well-intentioned poll descending into this state, and hope that it hasn't by association soured your interest in this matter. That being said, I do have the following to say:Perhaps a kinder soul might find compassion and apologize for any feelings hurt over this issue, but I still stand by my opinion that the topic was closed prematurely, and the subject was too readily dismissed, be it through conviction, defensiveness, misjudgment, or otherwise. My entire point in contacting the administrators in this case, a pair of guys who I'm sure are rather busy with other affairs, was to rail against the level of high-handedness in the moderation of the Steam topic which, while I may grant was heated, did not unduly attack anyone. I will
contend that my calling out Dark on the subject could have been avoided had he thought his response through, as would this further communique. At no point in my strong requests for him to demonstrate, beyond ignorance, justifiable evidence for his case, did I or any others deliver any personal attacks, aside from calling a spade a spade.Busy lives are busy lives, and if Dark had calmly explained that neither he nor the other moderators were currently unable to explore a new platform, the situation could have easily been dealt with by means of community effort: members who review and write entries for games, members who demonstrate and explain the setup of the Steam client, members who may have been willing to contribute in any number of ways. Even if This were not possible, a simple and diplomatic explanation to that fact would have done better, and would not have so firmly slammed the door.I believe in equal representation. I well understand that Dark and the other mo
derators perform their responsibilities voluntarily, and at no point have I ever openly disrespected any of them (that I am aware of). However, equal representation does not mean arbitrarily closing a topic which, while slightly opinionated and perhaps "heated", had remained on topic, and had not deteriorated into duplicity. I will point to my forum signature which illustrates this fact at its finest: The Ultrapowered topics and their ilk for some time received hundreds of rather discourteous or offensive messages, and yet no moderators at any point in time saw fit to slam its doors (despite multiple entreaties to this end). In other topics where heat arose, moderators often warned the individual(s) involved, but allowed the conversation to continue. Why then, was this Steam topic an exception to that established modus operandi? At any point, a moderator could have stepped in and warned myself or my fellow contributors that we were being too hostile, if indeed we were. As
this never occurred, I can only assume that the topic had not escalated to a level which would concern the group of moderators as a whole. Responsibilities are responsibilities, and that means owning up when you make a mistake, as I believe has happened here.I do not seek to vilify or condemn anyone. My contacting the administrators was to seek redress for the undue execution of powers. Perhaps this situation will set guidelines for the moderators themselves in future exchanges, and perhaps things will just quiet down and return to how they were without any significant change, but I cannot just roll over and except that one person can shut down an entire avenue of discussion, where everyone was conforming to the rules, and that person receive no reprisal.Even if Steam games remain apart from the Audiogames database, there should be a good reason why this is so. Remember, at no point during the discussion was it demanded that Steam games be added to the database by thos
e who were voting for it. If it be it a lack of time or inclination, allow the community to contribute where you cannot. If it be ignorance, then do not embrace ignorance as fact, but allow yourself to be educated as time permits. To do otherwise is not only discourteous and unappreciative to the developers who have gone out of their way to accommodate their visually impaired fans, but is also a disservice to the members of the community, who (in this case) have clearly demonstrated an overwhelming desire for Steam representation, and have furthermore demonstrated (through various other forum postings) their willingness to assist in this matter.I did not post this topic to rehash the argument, nor did I do so expressly to cause distress to any parties involved or otherwise. I did so as a public service, believing that the members of the community have a right to know how those who are at the reins are handling the steed. Dark has done a lot for the Audiogames site and communi

Re: Braille Note Touch

Well that's the thing with the touch. Even if you're not a fan of keysoft, you're no longer stuck inside keysoft. So it's basically that same consistent interface everyone's used to, alon gwith the option of other apps. For example, this being a google certified tablet, both the keyplan app and the regular google calendar app are included. So if you like google calendar and are used to it, no problem! Whether you use keyplan or google calendar, they are both in sync with google calendar. So when you use keyplan, your stuff is going automatically into google calendar, so if you switch between the two, they'll never become out of sync. There's one thing I'm actually wondering, about the acapela engine. I wonder if it's HUmanware's own Acapela engine, or the standard acapela app that just includes voices. Because if we use our purchased acapela voices with it, hopefully there aren't two acapela apps on the unit. And if it is the
standard acapela app, then that should be more reason for acapela to put at least one voice into the app, if even one that says please purchase a voice, every minute or so. Because the engine still lets you switch to it when you've got  no purchased voices, and that's a problem, if, for example, someone switches to it by mistake.

Message to the audio games community

2016-05-13 Thread AudioGames

Message to the audio games community

As promised an update on #SteamGate - the recent conversation on whether or not Steam-games should be added to the AudioGames.net database (and the discussions here and on social media that followed). There have been a few conversations amongst the admins and founders and moderators of the site, leading to the agreement of adding sound-based games such as SkullGirls that are distributed via digital VI-inaccessible distribution channels such as Steam (but are playable without Steam once purchased and installed). It does not happen often that an issue such as this arises in the audio games community and we're happy it was solved pretty fast without a lot of damage. We do want to stress that AudioGames.net is fueled by spare time and an immense love and passion for audio games. All of us at AudioGames.net have worked really hard to build up this community, keep it spam-free and update the database with games that are ready to play. Please remember, especially in the h
eat of an online discussion, that there are no big companies behind AudioGames.net, and that, as such, it is solely run by enthusiasts who all share the notion that audio games are important. Because they are. Their importance and meaning is proven every single day by the approximately 4000 of silent spectators and active participants that visit the database and forum to connect and share their ideas and experiences. The past 14 years have proven that the audio game community is awesome. Truly. Our community is positive, vibrant, creative, respectful and most importantly: fun! And we are grateful and proud to be a part of it for the past 14 years. Which, in Internet-time, is a pretty long time (in perspective, AudioGames.net is older than Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp). The recent conversation on the definition, scope and identity of audio games and AudioGames.net might be one that was overdue but perhaps relevant in order to make the next 14 years even more wonderful. It is
a fact that new platforms and technologies for audio games will and have already come into existence. And we might want to get ready to support drone audio games, VR audio games, self-driving car audio games and heck, even super cochlear implant audio games?Maybe the time to re-evaluate the possibilities and new potentials of future audio games is... now.Are you in for a ride?Richard and Sander

Re: Preludeamals, a puzzle solving game by Aprone

Aminiel, I think KeyIsFull is right that checkup.exe will solve that error, and fortunately it should have already come in the Preludeamals zip so you don't have to download Castaways 2 to get it.  If that doesn't work, let me know and we'll figure out what's going on.Smoothgunner, there are indeed multiple ways to beat each level.  During testing, it actually seemed rare for other people and myself to even solve them the same way at all.  Whenever someone did tell me anything about how they solved a particular puzzle, it was never how I had done it.  I enjoy games where you aren't locked into a single correct answer. As far as high scores, I did originally plan on having each level track the lowest number of redirections you had solved it in.  I forgot to actually implement that, and also code to keep levels locked until you had beaten the one before it.  When it comes to locked levels, I'm rethinking my sta
nd on that.  Part of me is now seeing the benefit of letting people skip a level they're stuck on, and come back to it later.I imagine community created challenges will be the best place for bragging rights, where players can try to win with the least redirects.

Re: Preludeamals, a puzzle solving game by Aprone

Giovani, if you put a north-west track down in the corner, it will change the arm's direction.  If the north-west track is sitting down at C 3, the arm will be approaching it from the north.  The angled track will then turn the arm to head west.  Once the arm is moving west, it will go from C 3 to A 3.  The game may seem confusing at first, but once you figure out how it works, I think you'll have fun.   I've just posted a new update.  I forgot to list it in the change log, but I corrected the sound bug for the toggle switch.  I also added in debugging mode which may prove useful.Changes from 0.6c to 0.6d- Q toggles debugging mode.  For an extra bit of help on complex maps, enabling debugging mode causes the game to pause and read out exactly what the arm is doing at each step.- After failing or wi
nning a level, a file called Summary.txt will be created in your Preludeamals folder.  This file will list every action that took place as the arm made its run around the room, and may be helpful in finding where your design went wrong.

Re: Any more Japanese games out there?

2016-05-13 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : boy via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Any more Japanese games out there?

There are some game developers other than Nyanchan, Galaxy Laboratory and Morokuma, but I don't know what they are now. I might be able to find the links to their pages at some point today. I don't think Brave of Cloudia is complete, but Cave of Marvel is. I know it's complete, but I think some of the bosses, like the egg are impossible, almost. Of course you can beat them, because I got up to Dungeon 25 which is the last dungeon. You can fight the final boss, then unlock a fighting mode. After that, you can play in hard mode. Here are some game play instructions. Note you need, and I mean need to either know some japanese, or have JGT or Q translate running for this to work correctly. Combat can be a bit hard, because the key commands for moving your main character are strange. I think it's f to move left, h for right, j weak attack, k strong attack, l for jump, and semmy colin to aproach the enemy so you can start attacking. When I get home from school, I
9;ll translate the manual and put up a save file that already has the keys set to what you'd probably expect. Left and right arrow to move left and right, left control weak attack (less powerful but you can do it quickly) right control strong attack, (slower and higher in damage but it can push the enemies), x aproach enemy, left shift use ablity 1, up arrow jump which you can change because jump is ability 2, but I normally keep ability 2 at jump, and right shift ability 3. In battle, you have 3 people and the enemies. You don't need to mess with the strategies, just keep it at the default. This way you will be controling one person, the other 2 will work on their own. I will post the save and translated manual in a few ours. The manual won't be exactly what Q Translate says, especially about battle. I'll change the battle section, because it has a lot of stuff like what to be careful with during battle like the distance of the enemy. You might find this weird.
What that means is don't get close. Attack a few times, run back, and attack again. This might be a bit hard to explain, but it will be done eventually. This game has a lot, and I mean a lot, of challenge. It's even more challenging than BK 2, and I thought BK 2 was like the hardest game I've ever played. I mean, at least in BK 2 you could hear the final boss. In Cave of Marvel, some of the enemies don't make sounds when you're damaging them. That doesn't mean you're not hurting them. When I post the save, I'll have it set so that when you hit an enemy, it will say how much damage you're doing to it. You also can't here some of them moving, that's why you use the aproach enemy button to go directly to them. Of course you also can just move left or right, but then you won't know where the enemy is.

Re: Arbitrary Forum Rule

Well, you've obviously made up your mind. This doesn't change the nature of opinion, though, so I'd ask you kindly not to presume that your personal experiences constitute irrefutable fact, particularly not if you intend to attack others for being guilty of the same thing. Dark may well have acted prematurely, but not for lack of provocation.Having said this, the discussion does seem to be leading to some definite compromise in favour of listing games in the database, provided that the fact that they are accessible in and of themselves (i.e., are not merely mainstream games, memorised) is made clear, as is the fact that they require Steam. In this way people may learn about the games, but be well informed about the nature of access to Steam. Dark has relaxed his stance, the source of his convictions, because he now understands that setup is essentially a one-time process, so that once the game is installed it can be launched without further need to fiddle wit
h the Steam client. I think this is an all-round win for everyone.

Phil I have no idea why the download would be giving you trouble.  My website has been randomly going down all week, and my emails to the web host have been unhelpful so far.  I intend to call them in about an hour to try and resolve the issues person to person.  I suppose it's possible that they are once again fiddling with my website and had somehow interrupted your file download.  That does seem unlikely to me, but hey, it's as good a guess as anything.  lolJasonBlaze, glad you're enjoying the game.    When you place tracks, normally they are in the raised position, which means they affect the arm.  If you hold shift when placing most track pieces, you can place them in a lowered position.  When lowered, the arm passes right over them and ignores them completely.  This seems sort of useless, until Switc
hes come into play.  To help yourself visualize how it works, lets assume I place a "lowered" track piece at A 1.  I then place a track switch at B 1.  I can arrow back to A 1, press enter, and choose to link it to a switch.  I select the unused switch at B 1.  When I start up the arm, when it runs over the switch, the track at A 1 will rise up!  Now when the arm hits A 1, it is affected by the track instead of ignoring it.  Switches can be set to raise lowered pieces, lower raised pieces, or do both with the toggle option.I hope this helps a bit.

Re: Arbitrary Forum Rule

First and foremost, I'd like to thank you Aaron for being open minded enough to have brought the subject of Steam inclusion to light, be it inspired by discussion with various other persons or not.
I well understand that Dark and the other m
oderators perform their responsibilities voluntarily, and at no point have I ever openly disrespected any of them (that I am aware of).
Remember, at no point during the discussion was it demanded that Steam games be added to the database by tho
se who were voting for it. Dark has done a lot for the Audiogames site and commun

Re: Preludeamals, a puzzle solving game by Aprone

Thanks, the checkup solved the problem. I'm now at level 7.A few questions:* Can a switch be tied to two more than a single piece ?* Can a piece be tied to more than one switch ?A few suggestions:* Add a key to toggle a piece between its lowered and raised state, or add it as the first item in the menu. It could be very useful for example when you put a raised piece and then afterwards notice that it should start lowered; it may be annoying to go through the menu to select the right piece again just to toggle it.* Add delete key to remove a piece from a square; again, for interface simplicity* Put level 5 before levels 3 and 4. At least I don't know how I could solve them without using switches, so switch introduction should arrive before.* When attaching a switch to a raised piece, put it by default in lowering mode and conversely; instead of always in raising mode as it is now* Don't make the switch specific sound  if the switch doesn't do anything. * When associating a piece to a switch, in the menu, you mention about yet unused ones, what is very good; but it could also be useful to tell in this menu what already used switches are currently tied to.* Replace the debug mode by a real time equivalent, i.e. saying what the robot does at the exact time it does it* Add a speech history system allowing to review back latest sentances. This will be very useful for example 1/to go back and examine each step taken by the robot without alt+tab and looking at the generated file, and 2/to read again the tiny clue given in the level description* What about the ability for a switch to turn pieces by ±90° ?Thank you for this cool game !

Re: Preludeamals, a puzzle solving game by Aprone

Smoothgunner, that made me laugh out loud!  I can't say much about a dragon racing game, but there is "Dog who hates toast".  That may count as a toast game.Aminiel, originally pieces could be tied to multiple switches, but that was removed to make the interface simpler.  For a while I considered adding the feature back in, but many level puzzles had already been designed with that restriction in mind.  It probably wouldn't hurt to add it back in, so I'll at least keep that in mind for a possible update.I like your idea about a single key to delete a tile, and a key to toggle between lowered and raised settings.  For a short time I did have switches automatically switch to lowered mode if they were assigned to a raised track, but it seemed a bit confusing not having the switch's default setting be the same every time.  I may have been overly cautious, haha, so if more people agree it should change itself, I&
#039;ll make the adjustment.I'm not sure I understand what you mean about a real time version of the debugger.  I may need more explanation.Turning pieces by 90 degrees with a switch was actually also in early designs of the game.  I determined that it made most puzzles far too easy to solve, so that feature has been left out.

Aminiel, glad you're enjoying the game. I'm in no way Aprone (he's nicer), but I want to chime in on your suggestions:The first item in a tile's menu, when it is connected to a switch, should allow you to change tile settings. Pressing enter on that will raise, lower, and otherwise alter the piece. You don't need any switches for the puzzles before six. We don't have a spoiler tag, so I'll just say that it just requires some slightly fansy twisting and turning.I think the default state of raised or lowered pieces is a matter of personal preference. I for once can see uses for both setups, so I'm not quite sure if that should be changed.Trust me, you wouldn't like a realtime debug mode. Aprone did that for me during testing, and it was very verbose and distracting. Remember that the arm is moving and bouncing all the time. In a complex puzzle, that's a lot of messages to
digest.Aprone and I have discussed rotating turns before, and figured they would make various puzzles too easy to solve.Kai

Kai (Xoren), actually that extremely verbose debugging mode I showed you, for a laugh, has been added.  Modified to be less annoying of course!  Pressing Q will turn it on and off, and you have 3 settings which just determine how long the game should pause itself to allow the spoken text to "sink in".I found a bug that was breaking mission 21, and that is been fixed.  I remember changing a line of code after originally adding the map, which is something I try to not do.  As a result, I broke it and never went back to replay the level to notice.Changes from 0.6d to 0.7- Correct a game bug that broke level 21, making the switches fail to work.  This bug may also have affected some challenge maps.- Delete is a quick way to clear track.- L is a quick way to toggle a track piece between being raised or lowered.- When selecting switches, additional information is now listed, letting you know what the switch is alr
 eady set to do.

Re: Braille Note Touch

Baylee, here's the thing with subfolders. They actually did work, kind of. But of course, you had to get used to directory mode, and typing in computer braille, and that's removed in the touch. Now, it is an interface much similar to that of your average file manager..

Re: Is anyone going to try Quorum?

I'm intrigued by the IOS support, especially since it's based on Java tech, which is supported on Android, but not on IOS, not without a jailbreak anyway. Wonder how they cracked that one.I might try it. The problem is it's a language of its own, that's relatively new. It might stay the distance, it might not. My little head only has room for so many languages/frameworks/toolsets, I'd rather learn the ones that I'll encounter most frequently in the wild, or will be likely to in the future. Perhaps when this gets a bit more traction, it'll develop some attraction.Good find though!

Re: Python development on the mac

Re: Python development on the mac

I already paid so I could probably watch them on YouTube for convenience if I wanted I've been ploughing on with that series, though on Windows, and it is helping. Yeah it's a bit slow if you already know coding from elsewhere, but I'd rather have a thorough grounding than race through. Python's such an easy language though. It's the framework around it sometimes that's a bit tricky, though I suspect that's the same with every language when you're starting out.Still never really found a satisfactory way to work with this on Mac. I've tried:* IDLE: Not accessible, at least on El Kapitan.* TextWrangler + Python from the terminal: TextWrangler doesn't play at all with VoiceOver.* TextEdit + Python from the terminal: This looked promising, except TextEdit kept saving the files as non-ansi files and it meant
that every file I wrote had to have one of those coding tags at the top to tell Python how to play with it. Annoying especially when you can't remember where the # key is on a Mac. I even tried saving the files as specifically UTF-8, but no joy.C'est la vie, I guess. Though if anyone has any ideas, feel free to shout.

Re: Preludeamals, a puzzle solving game by Aprone

2016-05-13 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — New releases room : Aminiel via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Preludeamals, a puzzle solving game by Aprone

Aminiel, originally pieces could be tied to multiple switches, but that was removed to make the interface simpler.  For a while I considered adding thefeature back in, but many level puzzles had already been designed with that restriction in mind.  It probably wouldn't hurt to add it back in, so I'llat least keep that in mind for a possible update. In fact it may well simplify some puzzles. So be careful before adding it.Something else I noticed about switches: if you link a switch to a tile, and then delete that tile, the switch remains assigned. Perhaps it should return unused in that case.Turning pieces by 90 degrees with a switch was actually also in early designs of the game.  I determined that it made most puzzles far too easy to solve,so that feature has been left out.Right. So perhaps it's better to keep it as is.You don't need any switches for the puzzles before six. We don't have a spoiler tag, so I'll just say that it just requires some slightly fansy twistingand turning.Yes, I found the solutions without using switches a little later on. In fact I was far too complicated with my switches, when I just had to turn in some other way.Trust me, you wouldn't like a realtime debug mode. Aprone did that for me during testing, and it was very verbose and distracting. Remember that thearm is moving and bouncing all the time. In a complex puzzle, that's a lot of messages to digest. However, I'm still convainced that it would really be useful to understand why the robot ended up on a particular square.I'm sure, it's useful to track down where you made a misstake. Do you have another idea  how I could do otherwise ?I'm now stuck at level 9. Whether I'm out of battery just a turn before killing the last rat, or the robot gets in an endless loop. Any clue ?Thank you.

Re: Arbitrary Forum Rule

The thing that people need to know though is setup is fiddly in it's current sate, there are no two ways about it.Also Steam must be sitting there in the background for a game to run.

Re: Braillemon status update!

Hey folks. I haven't checked in on this project in a very long time and only discovered that at least a significant portion of the game is fully developped. But I have two questions that have probably already been asked.First, is there a way to turn the music down? I don't see any command in the instructions file that would allow me to do so. I love the pokemon soundtrack but it completely overwhelms the microsoft Anna voice.Second, related to the first, is there any way of getting nvda to read the text in the place of the default SAPI voice? Thanks for the help and sorry if this is redundant.Niall
