Re: My second BGT project, Screaming Strike!

If you want to start a conversation about that, it should be in sight and forum feedback, not this topic. But I think you might be misunderstanding. The signatures can be 400 characters long at maximum. Your signature doesn't have to be exactly 400 characters. That is just the biggest amount you can have in it.

Re: Core mud, futuristic crafting and mining game

I used to play this game with friends in high school. Was one of the only muds I got sighted peers on. SO exciting! IMO, the reason there's not a lot of players left is because of AI in the player run shops. Though I think the reason that happened in the first place is a drop amount in online players in the mid 2000's.

Ok, just noticed that the clock wasn't exactly working correctly.  Where do the tick and update functions need to be so that things actually update right?  Do I want the tick and update functions in my main game loop where I check for all sorts of rules, key presses and other things, or do the tick and update functions only go in places where the ball, racket, or players move, and thusly, math becomes relevant?  I assume the latter, but I want to make sure.

The fact is, that BGT was made exactly  for audiogames. It's not a mainstream language. This is what fucks you up when you try to migrate to a mainstream language and eventually give up because there's nothing similar to what you were used to do in BGT.

Core mud, futuristic crafting and mining game

2019-02-16 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — New releases room : Dark via Audiogames-reflector

Core mud, futuristic crafting and mining game

Host www.coremud.org, port 4000 Website http://www.coremud.org/I was suffering Wayfar1444 withdrawl yesterday and reflecting how awesome a mud with actual space colonization would be, so banged "space colonization mud" into google and this was the first thing that came up and I played it for a couple of hours yesterday. As a game its pretty damn unique. Its set on a mining colony in the distant future in which you play an employee of a ruthless mining company. Various alien and genetically created human races are available from cyborgs to standard humans and even a completely blind alien race (though I went with the vanilla option as I was learning the game). The game is like a hybrid of a standard combat and questing mud, (though one with an interesting setting), and something based on activity and economy and has a lot of things I've never seen in a mud before. These include actual work with mining shifts you need to sign up for and then clock out to get paid (they're supposed to run on a timer system but when I tried you could mine whenever you wanted), player run shops where you could actually be an employee and get paged when someone needed serving, and a complete crafting system using the ores you bring back from mining.Mining is also detailed if a little repetitive, you can be a shift foreman and supervise other players, you can drill in different directions, you need to repair your drill and wear air filters etc. there is even a VI alternative to the ascii mining map too.Combat is fairly basic, but on the other hand is interesting because its slower and less real time, and has a full body damage system as well as weapons ranging from guns to energy knives, you can also do a few fun things like process the corpses you find at a medical clinic for credits or extra ore, so it pays to carry them around. Two things which are particularly cool, are the way skills, levels and experience work. You can get better at skills by using them, but you can also pay experience or credits to advance a particular skill, though you can only advance a skill so far before needing to level up. You can also raise your initial stats with experience too, this means levelling is entirely voluntary and done in what areas you want. Then there are  ranks. You begin as rank c in the three professions miner, merc and tech and can advance to rank B in all of them by using killing, mining or repairing skills. At later levels however you can choose to specialise and be rank A in one area. This means you can advance your skills in that area a little higher, but still get access to all other skills which is pretty cool. There are only two miner access issues. The first is that there is a tripple triad minigame as a card game, and that just doesn't work in text display. The second, is I wish the skills/score interface could be in slightly less unfriendly columns, though these are niggles at most. Then there are quests. The game has some of the most logical and easy to do quests I've seen, and yet ones which are based entirely on the system, rather than auto generated kill quests or the like, indeed a lot of quests you can find and complete by just wandering around. There are a few things I haven't found, such as what farming and smelting skills are for and some activities I haven't tried, but this one is pretty unique in terms of muds. There is only one really seriously major problem. The game has no players. There was a lot of news and a lot of detail about the game up until the start of 2017, after which however there is literally nothing. Indeed there is such an odd cutoff I actually wonder if the chief developer got ill something, since up until that point updates and work on the game seems pretty frequent. I also sadly haven't seen anyone else on which is extremely  since as I said in this post the  game is pretty unique. I even tried to email the chief implementer, but the contact form on the page has a captcha with a none working audio alternative making it literally impossible, judging by his blog he's still around, although he hasn't talked about Coremud recently.I'll be checking in to see if I can catch someone online, and if anyone wants to join me in investigating what there is of the game (and there is quite a lott), feel free.

I'm actually a little confused about this one myself Ironcross, since there is such a dramatic cutoff, even in terms of looking at the channel history in game. I wonder if like New moon, this one has gone through a recent hiatus but is coming back.Still play or not as you wish, the game is really unique however you cut the cookie, and hopefully some interest from players will prompt a response from coders too.(I really wish I could contact the main developer and see what the hell is going on).

@David  still no luck over here I'm afraid. I tried all the NvdA mouse shortcuts and they do no good at all, I also tried in both Chrome and NvdA as well.@Bookrage, the only problem with the forums is they have that stupid application thing which opens a rich text editer so once the message is written I didn't find a way to actually post it, one reason why I sent the dev a pm in the game itself. @slj, yes, "get sighted assistance" is a bloody stupid thing to say, but I'm willing to give the bennifit of the doubt for someone who likely hasn't interacted with a blind person very much before. If there isn't any news about this by march I will be withdrawing my cash from the kickstarter project, since I don't want to financially support any  developer who isn't interested in accessibility, but as I said, development takes time and trouble especially for a new developer, and it isn't as if she said that she didn't want blind people playing the game, refused to answer or still worse, stated that it wouldn't be worth her time working on the game's accessibility, all of which I've heard from developers in the past.

Re: eliyo,a pet breeding and battle game

@David, that is weird I tried all the nvda mouse emulation functions but had no luck. @Bookrage, the only problem with the forums is they have that stupid application thing which opens a rich text editer so once the message is written I didn't find a way to actually post it, one reason why I sent the dev a pm in the game itself.

Hi. That sounds like an awesome story and list of experiences, I'll be interested to see what you come up with game wise. I'm particularly interested that you've employed Brandon, a long time community member as accessibility consultant, since that likely means you'll have some knowledge of what audiogames already exist, what has been tried, what does and doesn't make for great gaming experiences etc. Obviously I can't speak to the performance of an Ap I haven't seen, but your ethos as a company is certainly one which interests me and I'll  looking forward to seeing what comes of it.

@nyanchan, if you need assistance voice acting please let me know. Both my lady and I have on stage experience and would be happy to voice act for the satisfaction of doing it, though manifestly neither of us speaks Japanese . We'd also be interested in the scream contest as well.As to ideas, I agree with assault freak. One really nice thing about Screaming strike is you can stick it on now and just get out some frustration with no need to embark on a complex game. If there are updates I'd prefer something more like trophies, stat counts, maybe cash to buy items etc than changing the game with combos and the like.

Blind Sparrow Interactive's first project

2019-02-16 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — New releases room : Blind Sparrow Interactive via Audiogames-reflector

Blind Sparrow Interactive's first project

Tomorrow, Blind Sparrow Interactive’s first project will be announced. But, as the founder of the studio, I thought it would be helpful to give some context to the news and share a bit of the journey.I’ve worked in AAA and indie games on the business development side for more than 12 years. Throughout this time I’ve always wanted to do something meaningful in the games industry, but outside of a few small charity projects and some larger creative projects, I’ve never felt like I’d found what I was looking for. I’ve also had a real heart for blind gamers, ever since I watched the interactive fiction documentary Get Lamp and was incredibly impressed by the blind players of text adventures describing their experiences of playing games and the different perspectives they had on them.Last year, I came to a crossroads in my working life. While I had been fortunate to have an amazing array of experiences and see all kinds of games come together, I wasn’t happy. I knew I needed to pursue my heart. I won’t go into all the personal details here, but it was a big decision for my family, but we really felt God’s blessing on it.So, without knowing how to code anything more than a few simple things in _javascript_, and having never set up a game studio before, and with no team, and knowing very little about accessibility, and with only the money my wife and I have personally invested into the company, Blind Sparrow Interactive was founded. It sounds like a recipe for disaster. I know. I personally would have advised anyone who came to me with the same scenario against going ahead; and probably would still caution against it. But, somehow, I knew that I would do it, even if I didn’t immediately know how. In these times I’m fuelled by the Bible verse that says, “For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but one of love, power and self-control’. I also had the benefit of 12 years of watching others do it, seeing what they did right and, more importantly, what they did wrong.Changing a culture from the inside is hard. Go and work for a company that doesn’t have a good work culture and you can easily find yourself aligning to bad habits. When I started Blind Sparrow Interactive I was adamant that I would create a positive culture for the studio. People who worked for the company as contractors would get paid well and quickly. I would never let “crunch culture” (the idea that people must work longer and harder than what is reasonable to get their work done) take a foothold; mental and physical health would always come first. Accessibility wasn’t going to be just a word; it was to permeate every element of what we do and how we speak and behave - from the first inklings of a game design, right through to the marketing and even, perhaps especially, who the company contracted work to. Originally, we had a lofty goal of employing blind and low vision developers to make up around half of our contracted team. We thought it might take a few projects to reach that. But I’m pleased to say that at this moment, we’ve already hit that goal on project one, and we couldn’t be prouder of the work those devs have contributed. Our company vision is to create exceptional, life-changing game experiences for low vision and blind gamers that can be shared with players of all sight ability. But we knew from the outset that one of the biggest mistakes any new studio can make is aiming too high too quickly. Some studios want to make the ultimate game, the game they’ve been dreaming of all their lives. And they want it to be their first project, even if they don’t yet have experience with scoping, “feature creep”, QA, enjoyable game loops, and so on. They dream of the game awards and the accolades and the praise. But so often they’re left with disappointment and despair, and a huge financial hole they need to climb back out of.We decided we needed to work on something small, but practical. Something that could be completed within four months, allowing for the huge amount of time that would be spent setting up the studio and the company, pulling together a team of contractors, getting a working website together, learning how to code in C sharp, learning how to use Unity, understanding the particulars of blind accessibility and still be able to go through an entire dev cycle without compromising anything.Given that the studio is founded by someone who is sighted, we also knew we needed help, particularly when it came to understanding a blind gamer’s perspective and experience. We will always say that our first best decision - one we made even before we had officially started the company - was to employ a blind accessibility consultant, namely Brandon Cole. (You can find him on Twitter at @superblindman.) He helped set the path we would need to take.Tomorrow, as we near the completion of our final QA round, that small, but practical something will be announced. Our first project is not a game; those will

OK. So, I've done some digging. I can add the code in, but I have no way of testing it (unless thee's a way of virtualizing a raspberry pi). (Edit: QEMU can apparently emulate the raspberry pi, but supposedly needs an older version in order for it to work, and you can't update the pi without causing stability issues.) So I'll try it, and put it in the dev branch, but testing it will be tricky. If someone is willing to repeatedly wipe their pi to test the code and report errors and all that, this should become possible. I have a question though: Is it possible to arch-chroot into the pi? I'd love the stage2 installer to be there (or a variant of it at least).

Well, autobuild isn't even the best system for pi sd cards anyway. Most anyone who hosts pi images, whether that be the Pi foundation, or raspberryvi.org, would host raw .img's with auto-expand scripts. You'd just have to host separate ones for each distribution, similar in part to there being a Kodi distribution, an Alexa rom, and a full Arch distribution in the Jenux autobuild for the pi.

Ironcross, you're right.I started coding when I was 13 and hell, I still do it not for anyone but myself, because it's fun for me. It's fun to watch my ideas come together. It's fun to sit for hours playing something stupid I made. But yeah. Maybe it was too early to post things until I knew how to handle it. But now I guess it's a little late for that.

Re: Python audiogame setup?

See, that's my issue: Only BGT has sound_pool class. Here's a kicker: Other languages don't. Some libraries have something like position_sound_2d(), but most of the time you will write those functions yourself. You know the best part about BGT, though? As busted and broken as it is, as many faults as it has, it provides a starting point. It provides code, even if limited, for you to use as a guide. So, if you want to have sound pool like bgt, go right ahead. Find a sound library, write a wrapper around it for sound as most of the libraries have things you must do in edition to simply typing open("sound.ogg"), open 2 notepads side by side and begin the conversion. It's not difficult, I promise.I think that BGT should have the section in it's tutorial that explains how it hands a lot of stuff to you. I was shocked when I looked up menus in python and, shocker, found the input("this message") method. I couldn't understand how python didn't have the quote on quote standard menu, every coding language has that module, right? Wrong! Then I looked up BGT and that's how I know what I know about menus now. While BGT can be used for coding games and other programs, I believe it's real point was to get people to look at the source and go Oh, that's how that works, like me. Trouble is, people won't do that, simply sitting around and never opening the includes folder. Guys, it's there for a reason! Look at it! Convert it to other languages if you can't think of a way to do the sound positioning or sound_pool, learn from it. It is true that a lot of BGT objects like timers and keyboard handling are processed internally, but those are not as crippling as not being able to create a menu or play a sound. In fact, most of those questions could be answered in google by simply typing keyboard handling in pygame or timers in pygame into the search box. As to your question @post 8, if my memory is correct, accessible output 2 should have a bear bones read me. I can't say, simply because I use Tolk to get speech.

Re: Python audiogame setup?

@magurp244 Thanks a lot for your patiently answer..My problem is I was looking for what blind people uses as libraries, Not the sighted people.. You have enlightened me thanks for that.I need basic examples of accessible output, Talk, positioning, sound pool, Etc.. If you can. I tried use them with dir but they need a lot of things what i don't know. For example how can i tell something to nvda etc.

Re: Manamon question

I personally love it. If you have the time to level it up, it gets sparking tale which, at low leveled areas and high areas alike of the game, it will reck. It also gets lightning bolt too which is a five up move which recks also. I love it because it seems to get good stats. It has a few weekenesses, but nothing that nobody can't handle.

Re: Python audiogame setup?

2019-02-16 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : magurp244 via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Python audiogame setup?

@IceCreamThat depends. There are a few ways a person can learn a given library or API, some of which involve diving in to probe and test its function set, as unfortunately you don't always have the luxury of documentation or examples. For Pygame, there are a number of tutorials, books, and resources around available for it, along with a strong community to talk to for more information. Many of the tutorials though may drift more towards its visual aspects, though you can glean useful functions out of those. Its documentation is available [here], and if you have any questions or need any examples for it, like its audio mixer, just ask. Now, for wxPython, well... Its useful, but in a very back handed screwy way. What do I mean by that? Well many of its widgets and functions are screen reader accessible, but many of them also aren't, and figuring out which is which can be a trial and error game unless you happen to ask for others experiences on that. Whats more is that while there is documentation available, not all of the features listed in the documentation are actually there, some of the functions don't behave as you might expect, or with caveats. So what you can end up with is a lot of trial and error trying to figure out what works, what doesn't, and finding work arounds. They have a mailing list you can check out for troubleshooting, and the documentations [here], and you can also find a few people here who can help out with any questions you may have for it.Other libraries like pybass and accessible_output2 are more obscure, and as a result have little or no documentation. Due to this your limited to the community or trial and error on figuring out how the libraries work. Pyinstaller has fairly good documentation [here], and cython has a few books and documentation floating around with a supporting community as well.Functions like dir() can be useful for figuring out what kinds of functions a library has, so in a way you can dig around on what it can do and what data they store. Sometimes figuring out how tools work and their various quirks can be just as fun as playing a puzzle game.

Re: Super Mario Brothers: Audio Edition: No Sounds play, only speech

I got it to work, I just had novice windows user troubles. Now the question: world 1-1. This thing is HARD. Maybe it's because of the amount of objects on screen, but I have yet to get past the second pit.The one issue I have are the amount of pipes around. Are they Piranha Plants, or no? Also, it's difficult to hear the blocks above, and I almost got a power-up, but I couldn't track it. Ahh well, you gotta learn somehow, I guess.

I agree with turtlepower17. i've been using forums since 2005 and some of them autolock old topics and some don't because this is based on the purpose of the forum. There is a topic from 2004 about dog training in SA forums and users still use it because it makes perfect sense and creating 2500 topics about training a dog in a forum that isn't all about dogs or pets is horrendous. There is a topic about asus rog gl503 gaming laptops on notebook review forums that was created on jun 2017. that topic is still going and it is ridiculous to lock that topic because it is still being used and people who own the asus 503 variants still search that topic when there's a common issue.on Electronic arts forums i think the topics will be autolocked because games will get patches during their lifetime cycle and using a topic that's old makes no sense since the game mentioned might have been altered from back then. Also those sort of forums have autolock feature because the community managers would have easier time sorting through issues and idea and can dismiss the topics that are old and closed.so yes, it depends on the forum and community, and during the 15 plus years that i've been using forums i've never seen users being salty over what these people call it topic Resurrection, whatever that means.
