So where does this leave classics like the game Duck Hunt that Liam made all those years ago?I found myself playing it the other day, so I thought I'd visit the l-works site and see if it was still up there. It's classed as abandonware, but it still works quite well for killing some ducks.

Re: Audio Described Content

I take what I read on TorrentFreak with a grain of salt, so why am I bringing them up?There was an article on there, not sure how long it has been now talking about HBO canseling accounts that were using a proxy or a VPN to access their service. These customers were willing to pay for the service, but because they couldn't get it in their country, they had to resort to a VPN to gain access.Netflix on the otherhand sees you're attempting to use a VPN, but instead of canseling your account, they block you from using a proxy or VPN, but not only that, but sometimes if you're lucky enough, that movie or show you tried to watch may end up on your local Netflix.I've recently noticed this with a TV show called Glee.So sometimes, it does pay off, either that or Netflix is monitoring  my searches, which can be a little creepy, but if it ends up with good results in the long run, then it's obviously working for them.

So apologies if its a bit rough around the edges, I will give it some focus this week, but in the mean time I have just uplaoded a small tutorial to just give the feature a bit of an overview. If you would like to give it a go and check it out I'd love to hear what you think and if there is anyway we could improve it.Regarding the "do something object oriented, or be able to have modular functions." comment Laim, could you elaborate or think of any examples?Fucntions is something else I was thinking of including, and being able to export/import objects from otehr projects.

Re: Why should I be interested just because its popular?

I don't want to derail the conversation, but I just thought I'd chip in to say that I actually agree with the NFB's viewpoint on the film Bird Box, which is essentially that the film doesn't portray blind people; rather, it portrays people who are using temporary blindness itself as an adaptation to their circumstances. Unlike blind people, these people are only "blind" for a period of time which they have control over, and they adjust their lifestyle to the maximum extent possible to avoid having to be in situations in which they need to be blind, not because blindness is a handicap, but because there are more important reasons why people have to give up their sight (I'm not spoiling the movie). Because the film does not have blind characters on-screen until the very last scenes of the movie, the filmmakers are able to choose the interpretation of people without sight that they most like, and their interpretation can be quite free because of the differences between the real world and the fictitious world of the film. So in short, I don't think you should avoid watching this movie or reading the book on which it was based simply because the characters wear blindfolds in some scenes. Now, I can attempt to return to the topic of the thread by talking about the Bird Box Challenge, which consists of people demonstrating how effectively they can perform everyday tasks while blindfolded. I think it's sad that people would do this. Just because you see something in a movie doesn't mean you have to copy it; that's a very childish thing to do, especially when the movie is in a world so far removed from reality. But as other people have said, the world appears to unfortunately be becoming dumber, where people will do anything to just achieve popularity. One goal of copying others has not changed over the generations—people still do things to conform to others, but the specific activities they engage in to conform are just different today.

It would be cool if doing certain competitions would unlock new ones for you to do. I also am hoping for more monster types, and hidden types as well, theirs so much room for expansion with this game, I can't wait to see what it becomes.

Re: I'd like to get into mainstream gaming.

Alright, let's list the games I currently play.Mortal Kombat XL and Mortal Kombat 11The two latest and most accessible games in the Mortal Kombat universe. It's a fighting game and features what you'd expect from such. Attacking, defending, pokes, throws, mixups, specials, kombos ...Mortal Kombat is the rival to Street Fighter and DragonballZ, and features such memorable characters as Scorpion ("get over here!"), Sub-Zero, Shao Kahn and Liu Kang.Mk11 even features spoken menus for the most basic things, enough to where you as a newcomer don't have to use OCR to find your way into a match or fight your way through the story.MK11 recently came out and still has some balancing issues it needs to work through, but Netherrelm are pumping out new balance patches quite frequently and we recently got a new DLC character, Shang Sung. It's the game I play the most, and I enjoy learning new kombos, challenging myself on towers, beating up people online or playing king of the hill with friends.Street Fighter VMortal Kombats rival, I should probably play this more? Trying to get into it again. The fighting is more difficult in this title than Mortal Kombat but it is definitely fun. It's an anime fighting game with legends such as Ryu, Ken and Cammie.Injustice 2Oh boy. Mortal Kombat all over again, except this doesn't feature over the top gore and bloody sound effects. Take on the roll of people from the DC universe and duke it out. Pick up Batman and go beat on Joker in his own playground, or scratch your way through  Cyborg with Catwoman in the Asylum. Been meaning to play this more.Killer instinctFeatures a rather unique fighting system, I should play this more.Grand Theft AutoTakes a little while to set up, and you'll need sighted assistance for some of it. You'll also want to play this on a PC so you can get trainers and other plugins. Don't expect to be playing the story anytime soon, but you can still load it up, steal some cars, shoot people in the face and explore the incredibly audio-rich environment that is Los Sontos.Call of Duty, Black Ops 4Oh boy. I've been playing this with friends lately. We do the Zombie mode with bots to revive us when we inevitably  get roasted. Still, my friend managed 116 kills. Meanwhile, I was stuck with a meak 21 ...This game requires patience. The menus are stupid (even for sighted players), a lot of inaudible content on some of the maps, quite fast pace action ... but I've definitely had some fun bashing zombie skulls in.Microsoft Flight Simulator?Meh, it was good with it's your plane. Microsoft is developing a new version right now and they are focusing a lot on accessibility. I hope they add something like itsyourplane directly into the game, but we can only hope. There're lessor solutions for playing it now that really aren't all that immersive. I'd put this one off for now.Feels like I've missed something, oh right here we go ...Company of herosWarfare strategy game set in WWII. You'll need someone to do some scripting in Golden Curser for you (NVDA Plugin), and there're quite a few hotkeys to memorize, but I've successfully played and enjoyed matches with friends before. What it boils down to for me is1: learning. I enjoy learning things and challenging myself, so fighting games are excellent for this. But more importantly,2: the time I spend with friends. Hop on and play King of the Hill in MK and taunt each other and gage reactions. Shoot zombies side by side in Black Ops 4; I stream Grand Theft Auto to teamtalk and then we just fuck around with various plugins and enjoy causing mayhem. Honestly, I enjoy the company more than the actual game. The game is the platform that creates the fun competetive environment. I have just as fun playing casual capture the flags in Swamp with my friends and laughing about how much we suck, or just chilling out on QC and talking as we play citadels. In fairness, if I was sighted, I'd probably be glued to my tv screen (oh wait, I don't have a tv ...)Jesus, this has been a rant. I probably missed a buncha stuff. Feel like there're games I have that are playable but which I forget. It's 6 in the morning and I should probably go to sleep. Anyway, if you're interested in any of these games, just hit me up and I can get you introduced and setup with playing them fairly painlessly.Chow!

Re: Planet Saga, public demo released.

@346 I totally disagree. Planet Saga’s echoing steps system is one of the best and easiest navigation systems I’ve ever  experienced in games.  Echoing steps do determined objects close to you, which will give you full and easy understanding of the map or the place you’re currently in. Remember Paladin of the Sky and Manamon’s tone location system? That’s it but with your steps echoing insted of tones, pretty simple. However like I recall that you can turn this feature off in the demo yet it’s too important for navigation imo. What kinda confuses me is that when the character becomes out of focus when he reaches either far sides of the map but it’s not a big deal.Looking forward to this amazing game which my excitement will let me give out some copies of if it’ll be paid.

Re: I’m dreading the inevitable

Ok. First, I had a visceral reaction to the mention of your study hours. I'm about 99% sure I know which school you speak of, since I knew someone who went there, and faced a similar situation. I think it's absolute fucking bullshit to lock students into these routines. You went to school for 8 hours, don't fucking tell them how to spend their "leisure time", which I'm putting in quotes because I agree that boarding school environments are stifling and pretty much scar you for life. I had a relatively lax iteration of such a place myself, but it was still awful. We weren't even allowed to sit outside if we wanted to, never mind be allowed to go somewhere, unless, of course, it was approved about 8 weeks in advance. I'm exaggerating slightly, but it also depended on how well-liked you were. To this day, 10 years later, I still find myself wondering whether I should be allowed to do something like, for example, go visit a friend if I want to, although family issues exacerbate that. Speaking of which, I can at least say that being away for the 4 years I went to a school for the blind disconnected me from the constant turbulence and drama they brought to the table, which caused resentment among certain members of my family, but ultimately, it's allowed me to see a lot of the shit they do through a detached view, and I'm honestly glad that I'm not as emotionally invested as I could be. Of course, not being emotionally invested has its downsides, too, but enough of that. I do honestly believe that boarding schools encourage independence, but at a cost. It teaches you that you're alone in the world, you have to get your needs met through yourself and no one else, and when you're an adolescent, a lot of people turn to the most unhealthy behaviors they can find to cope with that void. You have this obsession with fending for yourself to such a degree that letting anyone else in becomes damn near impossible.

Re: Favourite classic games?

See, when I hear people saying they saw them playing it kind of deppresses me. Well for me, my fammily had an NES when I was younger. I always used to watch them play, until one day I said, I'm tired of just watching you play! I want to play too! after some begging, they let me. It was super mario bros. They were astounded that I passed the first level of it, but quickli lost interest when I died. My mother quickly gave me the idea that I could never play games like the rest of them. That all changed when I whent to my cousin's house. He was playing with a controler. A voice shouted. GET OVER HERE! scorpion wins. That was when I got in to MK, and mainstreme gaming. He introdused me to MK and its talking character select screen, as well as read out the menus for me. After that was my game and feuture anime, dragon ball z! budokai tenkaichi 3! With its talking menu screen, he new I could handle it, so he left me with it and said, figure it out. After his PS2 unfortunaitly broke, I began looking into emulators. Games I playd. get ready. mortal kombat 1 2 and 3 for the Sega gens/megadrive. Final fight 1 2 3 for super nintendo and arcade. Super Mario bros 1 2 and 3 for NES. Dragon ball z budokai tenkaichi 1 2 3 for PS2.. there is alot more that i've played, like sonic, GTA, and all that good stuff! This has been A dose of memories, from Juan Carlos Noel Reina.

Re: Why should I be interested just because its popular?

I would bet that the main attraction for watching Birdbox in this community was to rip it apart and see whether the NFB had something to jump up and down and scream about, so I don't really take that anecdote seriously. Thus why I didn't bother watching it, just as I almost never watch any Hollywood adaptations of blindness, because if you do, you suddenly become the scum of the earth. In regards to critical thinking, this is one of those skills that's being phased out at an alarmingly rapid pace. If people can't even tell the difference between clickbait and real facts, why the hell should they be expected to engage in meaningful discourse about books, music, etc.? This is why I've all but given up on socializing, at least in the typical ways you're expected to do it.

2019-07-08 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : magurp244 via Audiogames-reflector

Re: coding resources for children.

Most schools and early learning seem to focus on things like coding games such as light bot that teach the fundamentals of programming logic, in combination with more simplified languages like Scratch, Swift, or Blocky. Unfortunately, most of those aren't accessible. The good news though is that a close second on that list is Python, which comes standard with Raspberry Pi's and childrens learning kits. The bad news is that many childrens learning guides may focus more on the visual and gaming aspects of python, which may not be entirely accessible either. There are a number of free books available, but it may be best to avoid some of the more complex ones and keep things simple and engaging, at least at first. Some free books include:[Snake Wrangling For Kids] - written for children 8 or older[Dive Into Python][The Python Practice Book]There's also a selection of other books you can read online [here].Be warned that some of these books, such as Snake Wrangling for Kids do have chapters later on that focus on graphics programming using Turtle and other libraries. You may want to skip some or all of those chapters or focus on a more geometry based approach to working with them. Also none of these books focus on the more audio based forms of development commonly used in audio games.Starting off they should focus on the fundamentals of the language with some of the beginner books, loops, variables, if/else, math operations, functions, and classes. After that they can start moving towards libraries like Pyglet or Pygame for creating windows, basic audio, key and mouse input, etc. A few key resources you may want to introduce them to would be Tolk for screen reader support, and some OpenAL Examples I have available for more advanced audio. Tolk has been experiencing some issues with its main download, but I have a backup copy [here] with a working example of it in use [here], and you can find my OpenAL Python examples [here], which include 3D positional audio, Effects, Filters, HRTF, and Recording. If they have any questions or problems, feel free to drop a question here and we'll try and help out as best we can.

Re: preparation regarding copyright

@356, damn straight. It's not about supporting illegal assets, or gloating about doing the same, not if you're a decent human being. It's about the fact that, no matter your moral stance on such things, games like Crazy Party, Beatstar, Rhythm Rage, and a host of others which are known to use copyrighted sounds, are some of the most well-designed games we have. Again, if you really wanted to, you could argue about what that says about the community at large, but the fact of the matter is that if you take those away, you're going to have a flood of clones and mind-numbingly simple games written by kids to take their place. At that point, the mods would be playing a game of Wackamole, desperately trying to bat away all the stale concepts and stolen code. We really, REALLY don't want that, but that would be exactly the sort of future I'd forsee for this place if a hardline stance were to be taken.Like it or not, no matter how much drama has been infesting this place as of late, this is the place where people go to learn about audio games. How do you think it would look if someone unfamiliar with the scene comes here, and has to look down a list of dozens of blacklisted games so that they don't accidentally talk about the wrong thing for fear of punishment? Because, let's face it, if such a system were to come into effect, there would have to be such a list that people would have to look at before they signed up, since there are other sources which list currently available audio games out there, so if someone claimed innocence, that claim could easily be shot down, and the person would be punished. In summary: people get defensive about the audio games they love because, frankly, we just don't have the vast array of choices that sighted people do. This is, I hope, not coming off as an entitled stance, since I'm well aware that, depending on how much effort one chooses to put into it, there are games which are made for the sighted which we can play. However, there are just as many that we can't, so we do tend to fall back on audio games. If we end up getting inundated with games like Glass Breaker and Beyond the Bullet and God knows what else out of frustration that all the good games can no longer be spoken of, that is arguably worse than the current climate.

@Post 349 Since I've read through a fair number of the earlier posts that answered that question, I'll answer. The short answer seems to be the game's release date  will be announced when the team is good and ready  to announce it. Until then, wait patiently. The best cure for that kind of waiting, at least in  my experience, is to find something else to play.

Re: I'd like to get into mainstream gaming.

If you ever played rhythm rage, then rhythm heaven series is an easy recommendation. The latest version is out for 3ds which features over 100 songs from across the span of the series. There are several other playable 3ds and ds games depending on your preferences so rhythm heaven megamix wouldn't have to be your only purchase for the console. I think the game is digital only in the states, but you can import a physical copy if you don't have sighted assistance to help you with the purchase. For mainstream gaming, get used to borrowing the eyes of others from time to time to help you with menus and setups. A lot of blind gamers play mainstream fighters and beat em ups because they are the most straight forward. However, there are sometimes games that through accidental design outside of these genres that make them accessible. We have a lot of threads regarding mainstream games and consoles here. I recommend consulting them and letting that be your guide as a new mainstream gamer. You don't wanna plop money down on a seemingly accessible  console with not enough games that catch your interest. Sometimes beeps and clicks in a menu are enough if you have the layout memorized, and o gods, get ready to memorizea lot, but soon it will become second nature. If you really don't want to invest in a console right now, then steam is probably the way to go, but I don't use it so can't say too much on that. If you ever played pokemon crystal access, then you've already had a taste of mainstream gaming. That is all. Hth.

A bit confused--why would I need to switch languages to support Linux? Mono runs perfectly fine under Linux, as does Monogame itself. My question was more about which components might be platform-specific. Screen reader/TTS support is one such I'd imagine, and it's perfectly doable under Linux via speech-dispatcher, provided C# has some sort of FFI mechanism for calling libraries exporting a C ABII think we were both confused.I was just saying that a goal of the project is to expand it to other languages, this has nothing to do with Linux but rather just spreading the framework to other engines. The TTS doesn't work currently in linux since I don't know how to do it. If there's a reference on how to do it I could take a look at it on the weekend. It's the only part that I don't have working under Linux. Most of it is just monogame stuff which is fine in linux under mono. I can't stress how much I would appreciate it.

Re: The toxicities of the developer community

See, we don’t have any specific rules. I believe the reason why we get such questions is because we do not have an official guidelines as to what you can and cannot post.  It is a lot simpler, and I’m speaking from experience here, to pull this site up, type in your question, and hit submit, rather than go on Google and look through the topics. At least, it is simpler for somebody who is just starting out.  I am not saying that having guidelines will fix the issue, but it is something to consider. Also, There could be made a sticky topic that has coding resources for various languages. Obviously the developers that have used languages will need to contribute, but I don’t think that would be an issue. This will solve the issue of where can I learn X Y and Z, Because we can just point the person asking to the topic or don’t reply at all. If they don’t bother reading through the topic or miss it, chances are they won’t go far.

I'd also agree Python would be nice, but I'm not sure what limitations you're going to run in to by trying to include the interpreter. Security is my main concern. You don't want to give a programmer access to the underlying system. I doubt they could do much damage to it, but... You never know.My biggest feature request would be the ability to either do something object oriented, or be able to have modular functions.

I will sit down sometime this weekend and give it a shot. As for running a python script, what is the point of that? How would they interact with each other? You can’t create a window in python and expected to be the same window as your player. Similarly, you would have two keyboard listeners if you do implement that in python.  Finally, I am not too sure, but I believe there is no way to transfer any variables from a python script unless you write them to a file, which then your player has to parse and put to use. It seems like the cost will ultimately outweigh the benefits IMHO.

Re: I'd like to get into mainstream gaming.

Complete honesty time. There are no games that are truly 100 percent accessible. Now that being said. We're starting to see some real progress made. Madden 20 will have spoken menus. The gameplay itself is still not 100 percent accessible, but you will have the ability to be fairly independent. If you run windows 10, you can use NVDA plus microsoft's awesome OCR feature to quickly read text on screen. there are soem caveats when it comes to this, but you can still manage some games. For example I've been playing a lot of mlb 19 the show on PS4. I'm not able to bat independently, but I can fire up manager mode and choose what I want my batter and pitcher to do.as far as direct console accessibility goes, Microsoft wins hands down. The Xbox has truly amazing support for blind users. it currently falls short on apps such as hulu and stuff, though I believe either amazon prime or netflix are self voicing. The apps thing is something Microsoft needs to really invest some time and resources in to.A lot of games are giving us some speech feedback, but the games in question aren't games we can actually play. The current list I know of includes Crackdown 3, Tom Clancy's the Division 2, Sea of thieves, Forza Horizon 4, and mine craft. All of these games use first person 3d movements which makes it really difficult if not impossible for us to navigate. Forza Motorsport 7 is kinda playable if you turn on assists. I've been begging Turn 10 to add the same sort of narration found in FH4, but the final update to FM7 comes out in August, so I think we're out of luck. That being said though. We did not have this kind of access even 5 years ago, so I'm hoping in another 3 to 5 years we'll see even more updates.

Bypassing region locking and purchasing the AD is legally obtaining the movie. Hence, no piracy. Happy that I made you laugh, but hey, great way of entirely missing my point... eh? If you have any other alternatives that are 100-percent legal and are available to everyone, please share. A VPN is the only thing that comes to mind that allows you to legally acquire content, even if acquiring it is borderline illegal.

Where do I start? I literally know nothing. I'm interested in purchasing a console, if it's actually worth it, but have no idea what to go for, which games would be accessible, ETC.All thoughts are welcome. Remember, I'm a newb.

Re: maxseer, blind accessibility automation for Monogame

A bit confused--why would I need to switch languages to support Linux? Mono runs perfectly fine under Linux, as does Monogame itself. My question was more about which components might be platform-specific. Screen reader/TTS support is one such I'd imagine, and it's perfectly doable under Linux via speech-dispatcher, provided C# has some sort of FFI mechanism for calling libraries exporting a C ABI.To be clear, I'm not suggesting that you do this work. I'm just trying to get a sense for the platform-specific touchpoints. If everything else is pure Monogame save for the screen reader/TTS interface, I imagine porting would be a fairly straight-forward process.Thanks.

Re: preparation regarding copyright

Alright. Example time.Jayde posts a forum topic on this awesome ps2 game he found out about. he talks about how amazingly accessible it is, and leaves it there. That's fine.Jayde posts a forum topic about how great Mortal Kombat Special forces for the ps1 is. he goes on to tell everyone that they can download the rom at such and such a link and invites everyone to download. That is not okay. First because Special Forces was an awful game. More importantly though. he is linking to an illegal download directly.Jayde wonders how to get his hands on the Battle Arena Toshinden 3 soundtrack. Ironcross32 suggests checking Amazon and Ebay. This is obviously fine.Jayde wants to find some audio described movies he can watch while he researches more big words he can use on the forum to adumbrate his points with more clarity. Defender suggests www dot super illegal movie downloads for free dot com and tells Jayde about how they have all these great movies for download including the dirty ones. naturally Jayde is beside himself as finally his ardent and truly voracious appetite for elicit cinema can be actualized. Once we get done decoding what he's trying to say, this is what would probably happen. Defender would get a warning for linking to this source of material, and Jayde would be asked to use smaller words like I, and, and the.Finally. Jayde has taken it upon himself to attempt to create a game called Crazy Potty. it's a game which consists of 250 bathroom themed minigames. the music is from Battle Arena Toshinden 3, and the sounds are borrowed from MK Special forces. The staff would take a collective look at this and ask a number of questions. Mainly we'd want to know if Jayde was attempting to be financially compensated from this work. If not, it would most likely not be touched, but if so it would open up some other avenues we'd have to look in to as staff. if it turned out he was using stolen assets and was attempting to augment his bank account, there is a good chance we would ask him to remove it from the forum.

It's that once I'm the wrong kid who talks shit about Mason, but now, everyone is doing the same in this topic, without any accuses of the mods, without anything. But if I, or anyone who were against the moderators, did this exact thing, we would have already been warned. Pure democracy, isn't it?These were my last words to this whole drama. I might comment on gaming related things but I realised that it doesn't worth fighting with desperate kids and powerhungry childish adults.
