Urgent, help needed asap Hi guys. I really really hate to do this, but I feel like I don't have a choice. My school just snatched my financial aid right out from under my nose, and I can't get my books. I don't even have enough for tuition right now. Office for the blind doesn't pay nearly all of tuition. I can't get a job where I live, and I need help. Please, if you can, help me out, even if it's by sharing the link I'm about to give you. Re: Pet peeves from other blind people? As for the just say no thing, I know that now. The school I was at said you do what your teacher tells you, or else. Besides, I wasn't old enough to know I had a say in the matter. The other thing that bothers me is schools thinking they can hire the asshole type of aid for us. You know, the kind that goes nag, nag, nag, nonstop. Granted, not all of them are like that. My last one was actually pretty great. The first one, however, was constantly nagging about something. I was forced to change my outfit if she didn't like it, even if it didn't violate the dress code, which it didn't. I was also made to believe that blind people are not allowed to fall, so I have this constant fear of falling. I was also made fun of, by a teacher, for not being able to replicate something drawn on the board. All of this to say the general attitude of schools is a pet peeve of mine. As for what I said about putting hands all over someone's face, a family member is one thing. A new teacher who calls you in front of the class to do something like that is another. I don't mind explaining things if someone doesn't know. I also don't mind if people just instinctively hold things up for me to look at. I do that myself. I don't like being told I can't do something because I'm blind. That's really irritating. I know I can't drive a car, and I accept that. However, I can answer the phone, and I can go to school. cheap but decent microphones? Hi guys. Those of you who watch my streams may know I've recently started using a USB microphone. This is all well and good, until I need both hands for the computer. Is there a microphone or stand I can get for a reasonable price to eliminate some of this issue? The trouble is people can't hear me very well if I put down the mic, but if I use the built-in one on my computer, the clicking of the keyboard gets on everyone's nerves. I can safely say this because I know it gets on mine. Any help is appreciated, but stop uploading videos is not an acceptable solution. google home mini observations
google home mini observations Ok, so I've had my google home mini for just over a week now, and a few things stand out. First, basic hardware. I like the reverse directions option, since the situation of my surge protecter and laptop charger require me to position the speaker backward. I also like the startup sound as the speaker reboots, which is something my amazon echo dot doesn't have. Also, concerning rebooting, I like the reboot option in the app. This way, I can reboot the speaker if something comes up and I can't reach it. Now on to features. You guys were right about Alexa having more fun things to do, but Google has its fair share. My main problem is some of the games like to either glitch or crash and I have to start over. I also like the various voice options, although I have yet to use most of them extensively. My main problem is simple. Sometimes it says it can't do things, like playing music from Pandora, requiring a reboot. Also, when its internet connection is interrupted, it tends to be sluggish for several minutes to hours after regaining a connection. Overall, I'm fairly impressed. There is room for improvement, but that's always the case with technology. Carmen Sandiego season 2 released on Netflix Hi guys. So you may know I've recently discovered Carmen Sandiego, starting with the game shows. Netflix has a show called Carmen Sandiego. I can see where Sam is coming from. I've been pushed to that point a couple of times myself. I'm into beta testing to catch things like that, and while the mail app can be a little buggy, it's annoying at most in 13.1 beta 3. As for the new Voiceover features, I like the activities. I was a very new Apple Watch user, and I was in a very boring math class. I didn't know a lot about the watch yet. I decided to take a nap, because the teacher was going on, and on, and on about something we had studied for at least a week and a half to get ready for finals. I had leaned my head on my left arm, the one with the watch. The next thing I knew, a very loud siren was blaring in my ear. I sat up as fast as I could to investigate. I had fallen asleep on the power button, and my watch was counting down to call 911. I didn't know the SOS feature could be turned off, and there were almost cops in math class. my thoughts on the uses of Braille Let me start this off by saying I don't hate Braille at all. That's how I learned to read, and how I learned to love reading. What I hate is the attitudes of schools and others who work with the visually impaired toward Braille. They seem to think it's some magic method of getting everything done faster. In reality, it's a lot slower. It takes both hands to make one letter in most cases, and it can really slow you down. You also have to be really careful about mistakes. It's easy for a sighted person to use an eraser, or for anyone to hit a backspace key, but when typing on physical Braille paper, making a mistake means that part of the paper is harder to read, unless it's something fixable without trying to erase, like typing k instead of l. It also distracts other students in the classroom or coworkers in the office. It's more expensive to produce, and it puts up a lot of barriers at school and work.Let's not even start in on the books, which are ridiculously expensive, bulky, and not easy to get most of the time. Now, let's move onto notetakers. Most of them, with a couple of exceptions are ridiculously outdated. Some of them just feel poorly built, and tend to break or glitch easily. Stand-alone displays tend to have the same problems. They are also 6 times more expensive than a baseline computer, by today's costs. Sure, they can be helpful, but if you have to buy one out of your own pocket, it just isn't worth it. Now, for the good side. Braille does make a lot of things accessible. Things like elevators, some restaurant menus, newer voting machines, ATMs, and even finding the bathroom. It's ok for those who may not be comfortable with modern technology, or who can't afford it. It's good for labeling your stuff, and it can help you distinguish between a box of harmless candy and a box of really bad rat poison. There are plenty of uses. In closing, I feel that Braille, in general, is a mixed bag. Schools think it's some kind of cure-all, and it has its drawbacks. It's expensive, inconvenient, noisy, and it can just get in the way. However, it can help you be a lot more independent as a person through labels and things. I had it hooked up to an iPad to do my schoolwork. I had a school that thought all blind people should absolutely adore Braille and never even try to learn plain old typing. Well, one day, the commands using the thumb keys stopped working. I couldn't fix it, so I called tech support. The support person asked me to turn on my speech, which I did. I was then asked to open the options menu, which I did. They then instructed me to press the f key, and when I did that, I heard thumb keys on. I had somehow turned off the thumb keys by accident, not even realizing that could be done.2. When Siri first came out, I was determined to play with it. Once, I was asking it a bunch of random questions on a friends phone. I asked, Siri, do you like sandwiches? Siri's response, Would you like me to search the web for do you like sex? Most, embarrassing, moment, ever. Three in a row got ruined by someone else's selfishness, and I just want this one to be special. I'm turning 21, and we all know that opens up a lot, at least in the US.
