How coincidental, I looked at My Noise a few days ago after not having been around there for a while, and I noticed exactly the same thing and was wondering what was up. Now I was pretty sure I used to also be able to adjust the sliders just fine, so it would be great if someone a little more involved could report this. I'm also not a huge fan of having a bunch of web browser versions just for these kinds of situations.

Re: I got a new pc!

That's... Not very good. But remember, guys, not everyone has a ton to spend on tech. I'm happy to have finally bought my own laptop last year, it's a Lenovo ThinkPad e490 with an i7-8565u, 16 gb ram, no dedicated GPU and 512 gb ssd. Before that though, I was stuck with really crappy models. In my case it wasn't because we couldn't afford it, but also because we were all in agreement that I just didn't need all that much. Though admittedly it wasn't even that good at the time of purchase, and having a smoothly running system was... well, not something I was even used to. I also didn't really pick any of them myself. Sometimes I'm still wondering if I'm even getting the most out of this laptop, because my use cases probably don't even require that much ram or CPU, which is also why I didn't get a dedicated GPU. But it's at least nice to have it, should the need ever arise. And at least I won't have to worry about stuff slowing to a crawl.

But perhaps its because they made contributions to the site and feel they owe the public an explanation for not being around anymore, which is understandable. Still, however, I would've probably just limited it to one message and called it a day.I'm not going to lie, I wasn't really around for any of the drama pertaining to unauthorized forks, although I read some of it back, and overall that does seem to be a lot nastier than what we've had these last couple of weeks, but perhaps it's just me.

Re: I'm done.

I think the OP has been around long enough to know that more mods also means more chances that people will cry foul and make a complaint against a certain mod because they don't like what they're doing. Now I'm not saying that the OP had any party in it in the past, but that's what tends to happen in general. To then put the blame mostly on the current mods for basically not being able to make multiple copies of themselves strikes me as more than a little unreasonable. And don't even get me started on mod elections, which were also mentioned sometime during this thread. It would just increase the drama tenfold, only then it would involve different people. For example, if I were to ask any of you right now to post a list of people you think would be good mod candidates, then I'm sure many others would immediately raise their voice in protest to say that no, person A isn't suited for this job at all, and neither is person B, and the list goes on. Not to mention that you haven't even considered the would be candidate's personal feelings on the matter. Theoretically, there might be people out there who would be fair and good, but they might not have enough time, or enough motivation to basically dive headfirst into a wasps nest.

One thing you want to be aware of is that on my E490 at least, the ctrl and FN keys are reversed. So the left most key is actually the FN key and the key next to that is control. Currently, the only way I know to fix that is in the bios, and I don't want to just randomly barge in there without functioning eyes. I know others who do that though.by laptop standards, this one also has really good microphones, they're in stereo, at least sort of.But it really depends on what model you get. All ThinkPads do apparently have very good keyboards though. The E series are usually the entry level laptops, but I have mine with an I7, 16 gb of ram, and 512 gb SSD, so it will hopefully last me a while.

2020-02-08 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : arjan via Audiogames-reflector

Re: 10 Thousand topics

If people really want to reach 1 posts, I would hope they also have some content. So lets try to help with that!I was sort of going to write up memories, but Aaron sort of beat me to it. Yes, I remember the keyeyeyeyeyboard thing, among many other fits of utter stupidity, with a tiny degree of fondness, and more than a tiny degree of shame for being such a colossal moron. I was 8 or 9 years old when I came on the forum, which at that time didn't require any registration. Then the account system happened. If you guys look hard enough, you'll probably find some posts of mine where my English basically consisted of using translator programs, which means completely messed up grammar, among other things. Those sites/programs have improved quite a bit, so perhaps it wouldn't be as bad now as it was back then.Ultimately, this site has indirectly brought me quite a bit more than I imagined. I'm not sure if I would've went to other English chat platforms, and stayed in touch with people, if I hadn't met them here first. It also prompted me to choose bilingual education, meaning I had some of my subjects in English, when I went to high school. Except here we call it middle school, but the age range is from about 12 to 18, so its probably more like middle and high school combined into one. But I digress.Sometimes, I wonder whether posting on the forum at such a young age was a good idea, because usually at such an age you're really naive and more than a little immature. People said I was mature for my age, but that doesn't mean I didn't do countless stupid things. Most aren't very important in the grand scheme of things though. Sometimes, you just need to fall on your face to realize you're a bit of an idiot and should try to do better in the future, and especially when you're that young. The only thing I can hope is that the ones who are in the position that I used to be in, will do likewise. For quite a while, I had the largest number of posts on the forum, but admittedly, a lot of them weren't that interesting. If I've learned anything over the years, it's that quality is far better than quantity, and while freedom of speech is a wonderful thing, opinions really don't matter too much if they're posted by people who aren't very well informed.I will turn 25 this year. I also am on my second guide dog, got my masters degree in criminal law, and have a full time job. Kind of scary to think so much has happened, but that's what usually occurs when time passes. But, so far this has mostly been about me and not the forum, so lets rectify that. The forum had some arguments in the beginning too, though admittedly, they were mostly quite tame compared to what we have now. Some of the highlights I can remember, are the discussions with the two Kyles from Orio games about a game called Tournament of the Nine Kings, which I believe never actually was released. Then, one of that company's biggest critics made their own company called quag, which stood for quality audio games, and released the very first version of the game called Acefire. Then there was a lot of discussion because people thought the game sucked, others questioned whether he actually did work on that game himself or whether some other guys mostly did the work, and then, the game was replaced by a program called LifeFriends or something like that, which was essentially a harmful program that killed most other applications, and which you could only close by hitting a somewhat obscure combination of keys. Also around that time, people became really aggravated with James North for continuously delaying the release of Montezuma's Revenge, because you could preorder it and people felt like they were being ripped off. And... well, I guess a lot of people do know what happened afterwards with the game going to USA games, and Thomas Ward turning it into MOTA. That is most of the stuff I remember, anyway, though some of it might be inaccurate. James North was never on this forum to my knowledge. In fact, a lot of developers weren't on the foroum in the beginning. Liam was fairly active, and the guy from Bavisoft as well as Phil Vlasak were around too. Some, like Philip Bennefall, showed up every once in a blue moon, mostly to announce a new release, and... That's about it, I think.And... Well, things like gender identity definitely weren't discussed back then just yet, though admittedly that wasn't really anywhere in 2005.I actually do wonder if the original creators of this site still visit sometimes. I believe they were about 27 when they started on this project, so they must be well into their forties by now. There are pretty long periods where I'm not on this site at all. I think part of the reason is because I tend to stick to a select few games I play for fun, rather than trying out everything. That's what life tends to do. I've missed out on most of the administrator switching drama, though I watched some of it happen from a distance.

You may already have posted this elsewhere in the past, but could you perhaps link to this research you did with regards to capitalism destroying the world? It might make your case a lot more ironclad, as opposed to just claiming you did the research, since I'm sure it is out there.I don't quite disagree with that sentiment, but I'm currently not convinced the alternative is any better. On paper, it might be, however I'm sure capitalism might look better on paper too. It appears to be human nature to exploit loopholes and the like, so I would be hesitant to say the least to completely redesign entire systems only to discover that they really aren't working out very well in practice.

I think the fact that 1+1=0 is a far more important discussion to be had. You see, lets take the fact that people tend to eat 2 cookies as an example. So if I were to have two cookies and eat one, and then another one (1+1), then guess how many cookies are left?

Re: Why is assistive technology so expensive?

I try not to rely too much on stuff made specifically for the blind for a number of reasons, this being one of them. However, at least our insurance companies and such do a pretty good job here in paying for braille displays. Also, braille displays absolutely do not need to be cumbersome. Especially, as has already been said, if you use your phone to take notes. I personally do not, because I don't mind the laptop+braille display combination right now, but that might change. I would far prefer either a phone or a laptop over a notetaker anyway, since I don't like having a bunch of special tech that's fairly limited in what it can actually do. Granted, notetakers are pretty advanced nowadays, but I'd still much rather use a computer or phone.

I would just like to say that I'm thoroughly amused by the argument that canes are apparently not allowed due to being a tripping hazard. This school apparently never considered the possibility that people (or other objects for that matter) who randomly are in our way could be potential tripping hazards for us too, you know. Except we have canes to prevent exactly that.I highly doubt said school would allow guide dogs either because some people could be allergic to dogs. And honestly, while I still don't agree with that, I would say it's a better argument than the tripping hazard one.

Re: Preventing me to rent a house because of my guide dog

I would have to agree with Leibylucwgamer, I still think you should take it. Not only did you go through all of the trouble to get it, but I think it sends the wrong message to people if you end up not taking the house in the end. After all, the people still get what they want, which obviously is no dog in the house. This will make them less likely to actually accept someone with a dog in the future, because even if you relent in the end, they will not come and live there anyway. Of course they might have a bit of a damaged reputation from the media, but perhaps that's a price they're willing to pay. It's better to prove that the dog will indeed not cause any disruptions. I understand where you're coming from, and if you really don't feel up to it you could of course choose to live somewhere else, but I would recommend that you think about it a little more before rejecting the idea.

If people weren't as depressed,  today's politicians would be unable to control entire nations.I find it funny that for someone who explicitly stated that he doesn't trust wikipedia, you sure are making a lot of blanket statements without any scientific evidence. You don't really have to provide it, but I just had to say it nonetheless because it really caught my attention. The above is a pretty good example. I'm sure families have been torn apar
t due to social media, but families have been torn apart by so many things. Undoubtedly there are articles which will back up your claim, but I'm quite sure there are also articles stating the contrary... But one thing I fail to accept is that there was hardly any depression before social media existed. As to the rest of the discussion, my opinion would differ highly based on the situation. There's also a pretty big difference between a person committing suicide completely on his own, and somebody receiving help from another person in order to kil themselves. I think there's not very much that can be done about the former. What're you going to do, put the person who tried but failed to kill himself in jail? It's probably being done somewhere, but it doesn't seem at all productive to me because it doesn't actually solve anything. Some cases of suicide I personally find rather difficult to wrap my head around, but just because I personally do no
t feel certain very strong emotions doesn't mean no one else should either so who am I to judge them.People with disabilities... Again, it really depends. When it comes to assisted suicide it really should only be a last resort thing, the suffering has to be very severe and there are no hopes of improvement. This is the problem with depression. It's perfectly possible to recover from it, though not everyone manages to do so. And of course there's the problem with assisted suicide where the helping person manages to sometimes subconsciously influence the other person's decision to kill themselves. I actually have been talking about this a few weeks ago in one of my criminal law classes, there were cases where the other person felt slightly compelled to actually kill themselves because somebody already bought/gave them objects with which you can commit suicide. That's something which should be avoided at all costs IMO.

Re: The rules of good discussion, please read

Hi.I realise I'm not a mod, but since dark decided to leave the moderation hat for a more appropriate topic I would like to add one thing which I have observed many, many times. Its also a lot of different people doing it, so if you happen to be someone who does this then don't feel bad, many others do it as well, but I think it's worth pointing out nonetheless. It concerns saying a topic should be closed. This in itself isn't a bad thing, but a lot of people first say a topic should be closed and then continue their post with other things, which others are then going to reply to. Sometimes it happens the other way around too, that first there is a long post and then at the end the person says the topic should probably be closed. I understand many people probably don't intentionally want to have the last word, but by both posting contributions to the discussion and simultaneously recommending a topic should be closed you are making it look like
it. Plus, if you really think something should be closed you should probably just say it and leave it at that to avoid people replying to the rest of your post again. If you feel you do have something to say to which other people might reply then it's probably not a good idea to recommend the closing of the topic anyway. You could of course still report or send a PM to someone who can close the topic, in fact that's probably better because I imagine if there really is a need to close a topic, it'll be done anyway. And if no moderator happens to be reading a discussion at the time, then they probably also won't read your recommendation to close it.Hope this made some form of sense.

Re: Distancing myself from the blind community

I am in fact growing somewhat weary of the incessant complaints about the blind community. While I used to somewhat agree with it, I wonder how founded the complaints actually are. Remember that everyone who is complaining is essentially also part of this community. Radios you have to tune as well if you want to listen to something useful. There are plenty of tv channels with programs that I would not listen to at all. maybe the same concept applies here, just tune the villains out, or switch channels so that you're involved with something more fun. It really disappoints me to see that there are now two topics about the blind community on the first page of the off-topic room containing mostly complaints which apply to pretty much all communities. There's plenty of places where blind people don't get accepted at all by the sighted, it's no good hating on the sighted community for this reason either, nor is it good to despise everyone in the blind community
except a select few because a couple of particularly noisy people decided to say something obnoxious. The same goes for the playroom as well, I've never found it particularly hard to stay clear of the drama.

Re: Monthly chat July 2015

Hi.@Dark: that is rather interesting, we don't really have magistrates over here either, or at least not volunteers like the UK apparently does. Even for the minor offences, the people do actually have a proper job. Usually it's someone working for the police or justice, but there are also actual judges who handle cases by themselves and hand out fairly light penalties.I wonder what your training to become a magistrate would consist of. I personally wouldn't be so keen on volunteers actually handing out punishments because they might not have had the proper training, its more than just reading a particular law article, you also have to actually interpret each case, and be consistent. But since I am studying law myself this may be biased. In fact I am particularly interested in criminal law, and while I really don't see myself becoming a lawyer, being a judge would be quite interesting. As for me... Well, the law studies are indeed over for this
year. I will have to choose which types of law I want to specialise in fairly soon. One of the types is definitely criminal law, and something more international might be nice as well.I don't like this horrendously hot weather much either. Tomorrow in particular is going to be a struggle especially for the dogs, but luckily after that it will not be as hot. Unfortunately this also means there will be an overabundance of rain, which isn't exactly fun either. If only we had 20 to 25 degrees for the entire summer, I'd be happy with that.

But this forum is also primarily how I tought myself English, which was ridiculously bad at the time. There probably is enough proof hidden in the archive somewhere. As has already been said there are other programs which can do what research it and the OCR in JAWS do, only better. It's usually better to have one great cake rather than several half baked ones and I feel FS is currently baking too many of them. Projects which aren't necessarily bad, but not the most important are being worked on, seemingly primarily. While improving performance, which helps everyone, appears to have been put on a shelf. Also, what's the point of OCR scanning a document if the program which helps you read that document is clunky? As to bugs, I really don't know of any, so not sure what people are talking about there either. Apart from the eloquence crash words, which while perhaps not caused by JAWS are totally unacceptable in a synthesizer in my opinion. In short, I think FS needs to
get their performance up to scratch first, then they can focus on other stuff. Although I'd still prefer it if they would limit it to the primary purpose of a screen reader.

One thing they definitely need to do is improve word performance at least 2010 and above. Taking an entire second to go from one line to the next in large documents E.G 500 page study books really is quite sad, and something I honestly am rather disappointed in because word is used by so many people and also considering NVDA can do this much better. Slowdowns also occur in word footnotes, outlook and a host of other things. This might partially be because of the machine I'm using since I never really see the need for super fast computers, but either way NVDA still does it a lot better which is a shame for FS. I hardly ever use NVDA because I think it's unacceptable that you should have to switch screen readers for these kinds of things alone.Apart from new features, these are the things that need to be worked on in JFW, not this so-called research it which quite frankly is a total waste of time. OCR... I honestly don't know because so far I've not actuall
y managed to do anything with it, probably because I'm horrible at operating that feature. On my laptop I still have JAWS 14 and decided not to go to 15 because there's very little I use the laptop for other than studies and there aren't a lot of improvements for that. It looks like this will not change in JAWS 16 either. Great, now I will have to get more upgrades if I actually want to get something useful.

I am fortunate enough to live in a country where you don't have to pay for your entire display, but countries like the USA have a vast amount of people who can't afford them because the government isn't nearly as supportive. It also doesn't help that braille books are extremely clunky and a general pain to carry around, so the people who want braille to go down do have a point. Reading books in braille simply isn't viable, and as long as braille displays continue to be as expensive as they are they will not be used by everyone. As to spelling in general, sadly there are tons of people who systematically spell words wrong. I won't lie, I am guilty of misspellings sometimes, and frankly who isn't. But all the words somebody uses regularly should at least be spelled correctly most of the time.
Sometimes I just use less complex words if I forget how something is spelled. But my spelling definitely has gotten better than it used to be. I sometimes check out my very old posts on here and I do feel rather ashamed.I definitely think the news and database entries should be spell checked more, I won't give examples because they have already been given. It is probably also true that bad spelling may affect us in a negative way. Yes it probably shouldn't, but the facts are that it does happen. We can either proclaim that humanity is stupid and shouldn't allow stereotypical opinions like that, and you're probably right if you say this. But the easiest way to prevent this from happening is simply to keep our spelling up to scratch, especially in the DB and news.

Harry definitely needs some aura reading or other telepathic ability if he were to progress past his fifth year, because defending against nonverbal spells sounds like a pain if you can't see the jet of the spell either.
