Re: Making a Vintage Sounding TTS Voice @jackFor something that started out being done by hand, the synth sounds incredible so far to me. Coming from information gathered from the web and a few estimates, it's definitely farther than I'd be able to take it. The processing power needed for wavenet is insane. I don't remember exactly what it was, but the amount of time required to generate one second of audio, even with the top-notch resources that a company like Google has, took an extremely long time. Re: My Google Home Max adventures
Re: My Google Home Max adventures I've had my Google Home now for about 6 months or so, and I'm pretty happy with it. Not that Amazon isn't doing great work when it comes to smart speakers, but Google and its line of smart speakers is underrated in my opinion. I really haven't had any problems with the device, and it's always fun just to explore what services are constantly added to it. Exploring the development platform for the Google Assistant has been fascinating, and it's pretty cool how easy it is to create a service that can be accessed by anyone with a device supporting the Assistant. Re: MKSpeech: Open source, Low cost notetaker
Re: MKSpeech: Open source, Low cost notetaker I certainly agree with @Defender as far as not being respectful to the OP and his project. Even if it doesn't seem like something that would be useful or appealing to you, there are so many different people who could benefit. Like Manuel explained, it would be very helpful for those in countries who would have a hard time receiving the products we are all already familiar with. There are some really great intentions behind this project, so it just seems unfair to try and push it aside and promote a different product. It's similar to trying to push and promote a game by a different developer in a topic where a new developer is trying to get his game off the ground. It's too bad that this didn't get the support that it needed, as I am very interested in the concept. Re: What Do You Guys Think About Emogies
Re: What Do You Guys Think About Emogies I pretty much agree with @pitermach on this one, but I just wanted to expand a little. With all of the most popular social networks and services aiming towards audiences wanting to share gifs and images, I think that Emoji are pretty cool since we have access to them at least. If I didn't, I can certainly say that the chance for confusion and misunderstanding during my conversations with sighted individuals would be much greater. (only because sighted users use them so much) I didn't really care for them when they were first introduced on IOS, but over time, the concept kind of grew on me. Unfortunately, they've encouraged me to be lazy. Why spell something out when I can let the Emoji do the talking? I don't go overboard at least. I mainly just use them to help emphasize my tone. Example:"I FINALLY REMEMBERED TO PAY MY SPOTIFY!"Edit: Well the Emoji didn't paste, so let's just forget about the example. Re: Echos and echo dots: do you have any?
Re: Echos and echo dots: do you have any? I do not have an Echo, but I have had a Google Home for around a month and a half now, and I couldn't be more satisfied with the product. There seems to be a lot of negative feelings towards the home, but I don't see why that is. I think both products are great, but one may be better for you depending on what you want out of it. If you are an avid user of Amazon's services then the Echo would be the perfect device to help you get the most out of them. If you are like me and don't use Amazon's services as much and are more familiar with Google's services, then the Google Home might be for you. Like I said, I am more than satisfied with the product myself. As far as the accessibility goes, I would imagine that the set up process for both devices would be similar. On the Google side of things, an accessible mobile app guides you through the set up process with no trouble at all. I had the device up and running in no time at all without any assistance. (any product that allows me to do that gets a plus from me) I can't speak for Amazon's products, but as for the Google Home, developing your own services to integrate into your Home (and any other Google Assistant supporting device) is also pretty easy as well. Reading books from BARD on PC
Reading books from BARD on PC So it's been a while since I have tried to make this happen and look into ways that this could be done, but I'm giving it another try. APH has a program (and I have no idea how old it is) called Book Wizard Reader. I've looked into this program a while back, but I gave up on it because I couldn't figure out why I couldn't listen to the books using it. Now, since a lot of time has passed, I understand that books from BARD are encrypted and any player attempting to play the books requires authorization. Knowing this, I've been attempting to get an authorization file from NLS, but I'm not entirely sure how this would be done for this situation. This program isn't included in the list of players that the BARD website provides when attempting to authorize new players. So, all that being said, my question is if anyone has ever had any success making this happen? (not even necessarily via this method) I just want to read books from BARD on my PC. lol I've tried a lot of different things in an effort to make this work. Does anyone have any ideas? I wonder why there isn't any official software from NLS on PC for this purpose. Re: Listening to other people talk
Re: Listening to other people talk I think we might be on to something here. I too, oddly enough, have been involved over some arguments and disputes over relative positioning recently. More interestingly enough, I'm always the one who ends up on the receiving end of someone's frustrations when, just like Nocturnus mentioned, I take things too literally. I wonder why this seems to be such a common thing? Anyway, I think Aprone summed up one of the main problems very well. People lack the ability to just stop talking and move on. Even though he was talking specifically about the situation with his co workers, I certainly think that this applies to many different people. It seems as though people have a hard time letting go of disputes or arguments and have to draw them out. No one wants to throw in the towel. It's very unfortunate. There's nothing wrong with being skeptical, but there's no reason to undermine what someone has to say just because their experience with the topic doesn't match what you've experienced in the past. Re: Why I am 100 percent against schools for the blind
Re: Why I am 100 percent against schools for the blind @15I agree with you here. This is also a problem. From my experience, staff put forth no effort to try to teach students that they shouldn't do things like rocking. They often miss the opportunity very early on and so the student ends up developing an almost unbreakable habit. I also know several very young students from one school I attended whose parents were very transparent about the fact that they were just sending their child to the school to get rid of them. Some parents didn't know what to do with their child, so they just dropped them off at the school. Those are pretty sad situations. Re: Why I am 100 percent against schools for the blind
Re: Why I am 100 percent against schools for the blind @7Well I think that this also depends on a few factors like how old the person was, how long they'd been visually impaired, how long they'd attended the blind school, and who knows what else. I'm just suggesting that the school might not be entirely to blame. There also has to be effort put in from the student's end as well. Without that, nothing the school does can make any kind of difference. I'm not saying that the school has no fault. Re: Why I am 100 percent against schools for the blind
Re: Why I am 100 percent against schools for the blind @2I had a similar experience that forced me to attend my first blind school. I grew up in a pretty bad area with an even worse education system. Once I lost my vision at a young age, my parents (unknown to me at the time) had many different meetings where they fought back and forth with the school's administration to attempt to get them to provide me with any kind of accommodations. While this battle progressed, I met with my teacher twice a week (for half of a school year) I believe who attempted to sum up the entire day's lessons in one hour. To put it nicely, they let us know that they most certainly were not willing to accommodate me and that if we had a problem then we could go elsewhere. The story gets more interesting from there, but to make things short, that was what eventually led to my blind school experience. Re: Why I am 100 percent against schools for the blind
Re: Why I am 100 percent against schools for the blind Having attended a blind school myself, I am going to address the significant points you've made in your post and offer my opinions about them:1. Almost everybody I know who goes to a school for the blind is always sheltered in one way or another and never use their cane or read braille.ON the contrary, (keep in mind that I cannot speak for all schools for the blind across the United States) using canes and reading braille is actually pretty strongly enforced at the two blind schools I've attended. One was expected to use their cane, and if you don't read braille, well there isn't a whole lot of other opportunities for you to complete assignments. Students were often lectured and told off if seen not using their canes. There wasn't much of a choice for a student whether or not they wanted to use it. Textbooks and most other reading materials were provided in braille. (along with other mediums for students with low vision) I would love to hear more about what you mean by not reading braille though. As far as students being sheltered in this kind of environment, I do agree with you. Even though the schools I went to were extremely adamant about teaching students how they would have to ask for their accommodations once leaving, there weren't a lot of opportunities for students to experience this first hand. I actually understood this concept though having attended public schools for quite a while in my younger years before losing my vision. I know quite a number of students from the schools that I've attended who probably wouldn't know what to do if materials were provided to them in an inaccessible format. I wouldn't say that this is a fault of theirs but more a fault of the school that didn't teach them how to advocate for themselves.2. Don't even get me started on the accessible technology. When you walk in a computer room, you have the option of jaws, window eyes, NVDA or voiceover. In the real world, that's not what happens.I understand the point you're making here, but to play devil's advocate, if someone were to stumble across a Mac that they needed to use in the "real world", they would be able to use Voiceover. When it comes to other assistive technology though, I think you have a strong point. The two blind schools I attended offered many different assistive technology devices to students to use while enrolled there. These included anything from portable magnifiers, to book readers, to braille displays, and many different others. I do think that students should have exposure to these devices and become somewhat familiar with what they have to offer, but students quickly and easily became reliant upon the technology. Unfortunately, once graduating from the school, students no longer have access to these devices unless they have the financial ability to obtain them. (that gets very interesting though once you start looking at devices that are thousands of dollars) I think the point here is that it would be better if students had the opportunity to work with the technology, but not to become reliant upon it.3. I do not think schools for the blind are needed in today's society. Why not? Have you ever had the experience of attending a blind school for any time? Someone who spent all of their years of education in a blind school could say that a public school experience would have been completely useless to them. It's easy to dismiss something you haven't experienced without looking at it from a different perspective. I'm really not trying to defend the blind school experience too much because I do have my issues, but I'm just saying that there's a lot of bias here.4. Also, whenever I go to events at the school near me, I actually feel blind, or feel disabled, if you know what I mean. It’s like all the staff are silently saying "Hey, your different, you belong here."Once again, students who have only been exposed to a blind school environment could say the exact same thing about the public school experience.5. I could never spend 10 months of my life locked away in a place like that.Define "locked away"6. How were you people when you came out of there after high school? In what sense? Mentally? I would say I'm doing pretty well. Emotionally? Not too many problems there that can't be solved. Normal? Point me to one person who is... (blind or not)7. I've always thought somebody who's always gone to a blind school would be screwed once they left, because they actually have to look for what they need rather than have it there always when they need it.That is the case. A lot actually. Like I explained earlier, I've always understood the concept of having to self-advocate having had the opportunity to attend a couple different school environments, so I've never had a problem like that. Don't misinterpret that and think that I am putting myself above other blind individuals who do struggle with this. I'm not doing that at all. I'm just explaining that

The beeping noises you heard were telling you that the clipboard had found some text that it did not have an entry for. Re: Clipboard translation program (beta) Excellent news! After running the translation tool using Microsoft's App Locale, I am happy to report that I have experienced no translation confusions/conflicts. I even purposefully tried a few specific one's that I remembered. The only downside is that a few translations seem to be just a tad bit cluttered with the occasional random Japanese letter, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue to fix with the appearance of the new in-program translation editor. I tried editing the .dat file directly, but once I discovered that translations were not separated by lines or anything, I changed my mind. I'll just wait for the editor. I guess it would be safe to create a shortcut that will automatically launch the program through app locale.Edit:Alright the bad news is that the program throws an Index out of Bounds error when it attempts to load my transla tion bank. Re: Clipboard translation program (alpha)
Re: Clipboard translation program (alpha) I apologize for the double post, but I just tried out the translation logging program and for the most part I have been successful. I have translated a few menus, and the first level of the tutorial stage for Bk3 just to test things out. As far as I can tell, the Prompt setting seems to have a few issues. I have only been able to get the translation logger to recognize that the text on the clipboard has changed a few times. I was able to manually enter a few translations, but the program did not read the new translated text as it was needed as it does when the Next setting is selected. As for the next setting, I have no problems with it. It works entirely fine. The only mistakes in translations have been careless errors on my part, but it works great. Funnily enough, the program seems to mistake a few instances of Japanese text. While I was translating the Stage menu, the menu you get when pressing tab during game play, I discovered that the program seems to believe that Stage Int erruption looks a lot like Item Warehouse. I guess this would be where the editing of existing translations could come in handy. My plan for translating the speech that is interrupted before it can be translated is to use the prompt setting, whenever it decides to work, in order to manually enter them to avoid mistranslations. I can't imagine why the translation file wouldn't be able to work across computers, but as with many computer related things, I suppose you never know. As for screen reader support, it doesn't bother me one way or another, but I'm sure that the complaints will roll in quickly enough. Re: Clipboard translation program (alpha) [[wow]]. This program seems extremely useful! I remember once upon a time attempting to write a little script in AutoIt, or some language like that, that would automatically press the NVDA translate key stroke whenever text in the clipboard changed, but this seems a lot more advanced and dynamic. I had purchased it a few days before the X-sight website was scheduled to sease existing, but both websites conveniently stopped working before I could install it. Hmm. I actually believe I already had the demo version, but the problem was that i could not access the ASE website for the online manual on how to use it. Any feedback would be appreciated. Re: Learn Spanish
Re: Learn Spanish Hello forumites. A great resource from where you can learn many languages is from a wonderful man whose name is Michele Thomas. He has studied many different languages throughout his lifetime, and he has found the simplest way to teach all of them. He cuts out all of the confusing terminology that might be used in textbooks, and he not only teaches language vocabulary, but he also teaches techniques that allow you to transform English words into words of the language of your choice. Instead of memorizing every single vocabulary word of the language, the language is broken down so you understand how it works and how to form your own words. Many celebrities today use his method to quickly learn languages, for example if a celebrity is traveling to paris and might want to learn a bit of French in advance. So there is a Michel Thomas app for Ios that is free (although I don't believe the courses are free). There is also a Michel Thomas website that I didn't know existed unti l I started writing this post where you can visit to learn more:www.michelthomas.comI have used this method to learn spanish. Although I haven't completed the entire course, I would say that I am quite fluent already. Re: Creepy Pasta
Re: Creepy Pasta I have recently been doing a lot of creepypasta readings myself. I do most of my reading from:www.creepypasta.wikia.com/And I can say that there are a lot of scary creepypastas around. Knowing that they aren't accounts of real events is settling, but there are still some really frightening one's that are really convincing. My personal favorites are one's that involve computers/internet. I don't know why, but reading about cursed websites/demonic hard drives ETC is just extremely interesting to me (whenever I'm in the Creepypasta mood). I occasionally browse the other types of genres featured on the website linked above, but the technological stories are my favorite. Perhaps it's because if I'm lucky, a story that might center around a cursed audio/video file of sorts may have some sort of c heesy attempt at a recreation of said file available to enhance the reading experience. I also enjoy reading stories centered around lost episodes of certain television shows or edited versions of movies. Although these stories are extremely unconvincing, they are still good for a laugh at least. Re: VirtualDJ HSCSet-How to get it?
Re: VirtualDJ HSCSet-How to get it? @gellmanWell, I definitely agree with you on the fact that Freedom Scientific products are extremely over priced, but that's besides the point. If I owned a copy of Jaws, I would be skeptical about giving my serial to some random person, as everyone should be. There is always the chance that the claimed script author is not wanting anything but to fool some poor Jaws customer into handing over their serial to them. This is another reason why i most likely wouldn't do anything of this nature. I can definitely understand where you are coming from with your points about caring whether or not the script downloader is using an illegal copy of Jaws, but I doubt any script authors that are using this method would be willing to change their ways if you addressed these points to them. Re: VirtualDJ HSCSet-How to get it?
Re: VirtualDJ HSCSet-How to get it? I actually stumbled across the same thing not too long ago. The problem with a lot of authors of HSC Sets, is that they ask for an Email or something similar containing your Jaws serial number. The intention is good, protecting against users with illegal copies of Jaws, but also can have neggative effects. For example, what if the author of said HSC Set is busy and requests for the set pile up and no one is around to deliver the sets people ask for? That is my understanding of how these processes usually work, but of course, I could be wrong. I would imagine something along these lines is going on with the Virtual DJ HSC sets. Re: Schools for the blind, training centers, and how they perform.
Re: Schools for the blind, training centers, and how they perform. I, myself, have quite a long, difficult education process history, but I can say that most of my experiences in nonspecialist, public schools have been miles better than any experiences I have had in any specialist schools. The only negative experience I have encountered with a nonspecialist school occurred when I first lost my vision while I was very, very young. The administration leading the school I was attending at the time simply refused to accommodate me. They refused to slightly modify lessons or inform teachers about my visual impairment. Instead, there only offered solution was to throw me in the back of a Special Education class for students with learning disabilities and be done with the whole situation. Instead of immediately withdrawing me from the school and searching for a more friendly school for me to enroll in, my parents argued ferociously with the administration for weeks and weeks on end. While they fought for my accommodations, the temporary solution was for me to have one on one lessons with a single teacher for around an hour and a half after school days. After realizing that they were fighting a losing battle, my parents decided to enroll me into a specialist school. At the time, things were not bad, as I was quite young and didn't understand the neggative impacts of a specialist school for the visually empaired. As I grew older, I spent more and more of my time noticing the neggative aspects of the specialist school. One of the first things I have noticed was the speed of teaching. I am not quite sure if anyone else has had any experience in regards to this, but I found that I learned more in one day at a nonspecialist school than I learned in three days at a specialist school. It was mortifying! The speed at which most of the students performed was quite low. This could be understandable in some cases, but it seemed as though the instructors slowed right down with them instead on working to increase their performance. I noticed how different social interactions were between students in the specialist school and students in regular schools. I was quite a main streamer, so I constantly discussed the latest main stream news and updates, only to find that a couple of students knew what I was talking about. Trying to have a conversation with most specialist students was almost scary. I noticed the different attitudes students in specialist schools had versus attitudes in regular schools. I noticed how dependent the students were in specialist schools verses students in regular schools. And most importantly of all, I noticed the difference between staff members. The behavior of staff described by forum members above pretty much sums up my experiences with specialist staff. The staff at the specialist school I attended always ranted on and on about why it was so important that visually impaired students needed to attend a specialist school. They always insisted that the outside world was not a nice place and that it was important for visually impaired students to learn among other visually impaired students. I often thought if they even ever actually stopped to think about their reasons for visually impaired students to attend a specialist school for most of them were beyond ridiculous. Students were always punished for problems that were out of their control, as discussed above, and most of the staff were unfriendly. I literally spent most of my time arguing with administration and trying to improve the situation at the specialist school, but eventually I realized that I was fighting a losing battle. The only reason why my parents believed that it was alright for me to attend a regular school was because of a relocation we went through. The specialist school in the area refused to take me in so late into the term. My parents were absolutely mind-blown at how willing the school was to meet my accommodations. Teachers at the nonspecialist school went far out of their way to ensure th at I understood all of their concepts. A teacher of Science worked for quite some time on a tactile graph to ensure that I understood her explanation. (It wasn't a simple graph either) While in Specialist schools, they might have machines and fancy technology to make these graphs without issue, said teacher completed the entire graph by hand out of concern. Other teachers always approached me and asked me if I had any questions. I was never given the chance to approach the teacher if I had any troubles, they always approached me first. It was a great experience and I always thanked them for being so flexible. So even though a specialist school may have fancy resources, I would always rather attend a nonspecialist school. As soon as accessibility is ironed out well enough, I am definitely going to be checking it out. Re: The cube.
Re: The cube. You are correct. You can only send tweets to people who are following you. The closest way to sending a tweet to a large amount of people would be to include a popular hash tag in your tweet. For example, if something happens to someone that they don't particularly care for, they might include #fml (Hashtag, FML) in their tweet. This way, anyone who searches for all tweets including this hash tag will see it. Re: Monthly chat November
Re: Monthly chat November I had no idea that Audio Defense was available in the App Store now. I guess I should go take a look. I'm sure it is an excellent game. I've yet to be unimpressed by a game made by that company (I'm not quite sure what they call themselves, since I believe that a couple of their games in the App Store are listed under different developers, but I can't say for sure). I've been working on quite a few projects lately that I am trying to force myself to complete so that I will be able to finally release them to the public. I am surprised but at the same time pleased at the rapid release of Audio Games lately and it somewhat motivates me to join the pot of New Releases. As for the discussion about synths and Audio Books, I used to never listen to Audio Books using a synth, until a friend pointed out to me one day how large human narrated audio books are. I had realized that human narrated audio books could take up quite a bit of electronic space, but I didn 9;t know exactly how many more Ebooks I could fit on a flashdrive than Human Narrated books. I began to listen to books using synth speech, and I have gotten used to it for the most part. I definitely enjoy the concept of this experiment, and I didn't even know of its existence, and would have passed it up if it hadn't been stuck to the top of the page. If this experiment continues, I would prefer it to stick to the top of the page, so that it wouldn't become buried underneath many topics and pushed to a different page where it could be hard to find. Just my opinion...
