Re: tips on lucid dreaming?
Re: tips on lucid dreaming? Yeah, one of the problems you'll find with most magical/psychic systems is that they are visual as hell. I'm still looking for one that's not. I think the problem is that there are lots of folk practices from around the world that are non-visual, but there's no system. Nada yoga looked potentially interesting until I got to the part where the point is to not do sound. No, the whole point is that I *want* to do sound! There's stuff like the shakuhachi, but it's pretty specifically Buddhist. So while it's entirely based on sound, that has to be an aim you're after, and I'm not really. But notice somebody above recommends meditations about differently colored flames. Nope, not for me. Don't do colors, no idea what they are. So yeah, there are tons and tons of frustrating books and techniques out there. That's not to say there isn't stuff you can do, mind you. You'll just be hunting for a while. For example, I'm pretty sure one of Starhawk's books, the popular one whose name totally escapes me at the moment, has a visualization about throwing a hammer. It talks about feeling the weight of the hammer, stuff like that. It's "The Spiral Dance", I'm pretty sure, I just looked up the title but haven't checked the book. You might try looking into shamanism. There is lots of visual stuff in there too, but a good chunk of it is based on sound and just mastering states. I'd recommend "Riding Windhorses" and "Chosen by the Spirits" by Sarangerel, both are available on Bookshare.org if you've got that, though I'm not sure if either covers something exactly like lucid dreaming. I should add though that shamanism is a whole path and not something you should be doing just for the hell of it. Re: tips on lucid dreaming?
Re: tips on lucid dreaming? Dude, you tried to lucid dream with a method one time, and now you want more because that didn't work? That's like saying "guys do you know anything about weight lifting? Last night I tried to lift three hundred pounds on a barbell but I couldn't, anybody know another method"? I haven't done any research into lucid dreaming at all but I've done similar things mostly related to forms of magical practice.Notice that word practice there? That's because you gotta practice, like anything else. You should worry about asking for another method in maybe six months or a year. I mean unless the method has some sort of issue for you, like you can't do it or can't understand it or something. Or maybe if it's really visual. Then I get asking for another method. But if you can understand and do this method, and you're asking for new ones because you tried it once and it didn't work?Brother, you are in for a rude awakening, pun intended. This stuff is work, just like music or art or getting good at basketball or math or anything else. It ain't gonna happen overnight, see what I just did there? I'm sorry I can't help with a specific answer to your question, like I said lucid dreaming, hell dreaming in general, just isn't something I've been particularly interested in studying. I don't have anything against it mind, it's just not an interest, same thing as communicating with the dead or ghosts in general. It's just not something I feel I need to worry about. Re: I am looking for a very specific music site
Re: I am looking for a very specific music site Whatever you want it in, I don't think any sites are gonna give it to you in one giant chunk. Amazon used to do this, sort of, when you had to install their dumb downloader app to get music you bought, but they've sensibly gone to zipfiles nowadays. So I assume they'd do an album per zip, I haven't bought multiple albums at once to see what they do exactly so I'm guessing. Re: I am looking for a very specific music site Sometimes, Bandcamp has deals where you can buy an artist's entire discography. You're still gonna be downloading separate albums though. I don't see why you're looking for something like this though. It's not too hard to go to a site like Amazon for instance, I just picked this example because I don't use iTunes, and add albums to your cart and pay for it all at once, then download them. Re: audio experiment - how do you perceive this?
Re: audio experiment - how do you perceive this? The funny thing with Yani/Laurel was that I heard "yairy" until my wife found some site where you could mess with the pitch. I forget which way it went but on one end I finally got laurel really clear. I don't remember if I ever got Yani. 28:I didn't say I had "trouble discerning pitch" on a timpany. Drums aren't typically considered pitched instruments because their sound spectrum is largely noise. I suspect this has something to do with harmonics, but I haven't looked into the physics of it. What I said is that timpanies have some of that characteristic of more typical drums, so along with the pitch, you also get a lot of noise spread.Which leads me to my second point, I never said a note and its octave are the same note. I said both files are playing the same note as the timpany. That's because to my ears, I hear both octaves in the timpany sound. hence, both other notes in both files match the timpany. That's because the timpany contains both octaves, along with other noise components. Had I assumed an octave of a note was the same as the note, I would have just said both files, because they're the same note, and not commented on the timpany at all.GCW:They do sound like they might break don't they? I totally want somebody to do a pat waing NKS instrument/VST now. There's a similar thing in India involving tabla drums, called tabla tarang, tarang means waves I think.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnt9YN7xvVwAnd yet another cool Indian thingy called jaltarang, or jala tarang, this is pretty rare and is a circle of bowls, made out of glass I think, filled with different amounts of water to tune them and I believe played with sticks. Maybe he says they can be metal Or porcelain? Maybe somebody here understand the language and can tell us what he's saying, that would be pretty cool.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxVb6KKrKbA URL: https://forum.audiogames.net/post/618905/#p618905 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Re: audio experiment - how do you perceive this?
Re: audio experiment - how do you perceive this? I'm with 26. I voted for file one, because I could hear more of the lower octave. But the timpany is weird. For all that it's considered a pitched drum in Western orchestral music, I don't really consider it to be. I'd call it semi-pitched. Why? Compare the timpany to the Nepali madal, the drum in this song.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPzbGpe8HN0The two heads, it's a barrel-shaped drum, have very distinct pitches. In contrast, the timpany still has some of the muddiness of drums, e.g. Western kit drums, where you can't usually determine a particular pitch. Or, compare the Burmese pat Waing, a circle of tuned drums:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8CGsJqAYYcwith a timpany performance.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_Tj-7rW0yoThe pitches just aren't as clear. That's partly because they're changing as he retunes on the fly, but also because the timpany just has a lot more noise components in its sound. Re: How do I get started composing music with reaper
Re: How do I get started composing music with reaper Ah, glad it works! The thing with a DAW like Reaper is that, while it has default settings like everything else, you have to set up your devices and stuff, it doesn't autodetect things. That sounds wrong until you think about it a bit. Suppose you get a professional audio interface. You also have the sound built-in to your computer ,and a USB headset microphone. Which thing should Reaper use? You probably don't want it to try and use them all at once, particularly since pro audio has a different driver entirely, that's ASIO. It gives you lower latency, which means the time between when you hit a key on a keyboard, for example, and the instrument actually sounding. So same thing if you have an actual midi keyboard, either a controller or one with its own sounds that you can connect to your computer. You have to tell it about that device and what you want to use, it won't just detect it automatically. Again, suppose you have my audio interface, the Behringer UMC404HD. It has a midi interface built in, they say for hooking up a control surface but it should work with anything midi, like a keyboard. But I don't use it because my Komplete Kontrol keyboard hooks up with USB. But again, let's say I run Reaper and I didn't turn it on, and Reaper tries to automatically figure out my midi interface. It would probably pick up the one in the interface and not the keyboard, because the keyboard's not powered on so it can't see it. So then if I turn the keyboard on, all my midi is going through something I'm not even using, so nothing would really work.So yeah, just remember that for devices in particular, you have to go set stuff up usually, even if you only have one device. Hell sometimes even the built-in audio is multiple devices, I have a Synaptics headphone jack, among other things, in my laptop, and then a bunch of AMD high definition audio that the laptop thinks aren't connected. I don't even know what that's all about, because the laptop works so I haven't dug into figuring it out. And these days a lot of interfaces, consumer or pro, are USB, so you can just connect and disconnect them at will. The nice thing is that once you set stuff up, you can usually just switch between devices when you open Reaper, if that's something you need to do. Since I'm planning on using my laptop as my main machine, I now have my pro interface in Reaper. So when I go downstairs where all of the hardware is, if I've been using Reaper without it, I just switch from WASAPI to ASIO, and everything runs through my pro interface, no problem, because I've already set up that device with the ranges and stuff it wants. So I just pick the pro interface, and I'm off to the races, whatever they are. Re: How do I get started composing music with reaper
Re: How do I get started composing music with reaper 18:You probably need to go into preferences, find devices, and pick an audio device. Specifically, you probably need to pick a driver. Try WASAPI. If that doesn't work, there's also wave out or direct out I think. If you have some sort of professional interface, and I'm assuming you don't, you want to pick ASIO and then set your input and output ranges.Again, you really probably want to get signed up on the Reaper list here.https://groups.io/g/rwpThey're going to be able to give you a lot more help than I can at least. Re: How do I get started composing music with reaper
Re: How do I get started composing music with reaper I suggested importing a wav file because it seems more reliable to me. I don't know if the new OSARA keymap uses ctrl-m for the metronome, I haven't updated yet, so when I tried it, it didn't work. For me anyway, it's shift-ctrl-m. That having been said, when I used that, I did hear the metronome when I hit space. So I guess if you don't have a wav file laying around or inserting one just takes up too much of your time, yep, the metronome works too. Also I'm not sure if that covers everything, like audio and video and speech if it's an audio game. Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday So you know how one of the first things in this thought experiment in post 1 is how, if not having to work was for months and months, or possibly eternal, crime and stuff would happen?https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/ … nce-466034Specifically, this quote."The pandemic. QAnon was this fringe thing, it was concerning. Then, in 2020, it went on steroids. In March, even before the shutdowns, I had my staff look at the research we use for developing behavioral indicators of individuals who might mobilize to violence. If we go down this path of having to all stay home, does that increase stress factors? Does it increase risk factors known to be common in people who carry out attacks? The answer was yes.You started hearing the anti-government conspiracies — which was totally predictable. Anybody who has spent any time in Republican or libertarian politics knows you’re going to have people unhappy about the government. That’s fine; you can predict that. The question then is that if you know that’s going to be a challenge, what can the government do to help individuals understand why it is issuing stay-at-home orders, why it’s necessary, why it’s legal and constitutional? If the government had done a better job at that, we would have seen slightly less anger, slightly less of that victim-persecution complex. With the pandemic, you had what was perceived to be government overreach; you had social isolation, which is a known risk factor [for extremism]; you had some people with a lot more time on their hands because they were not commuting, not taking kids to ballgames and not going to happy hour after work; you had economic stress — another known risk factor — as people lost jobs or moved to part-time status; you had people who lost loved ones. There was this great sense that people had lost control; our lives as we knew them had been upended.People who had a strong, healthy sense of self or community were able to mitigate their isolation. But for individuals already on the cusp, this made them vulnerable. We use that word, “vulnerable,” to describe people who are not necessarily radicalized yet, but have factors in their lives that make it easier for them to move on a pathway towards extreme radicalized thought — and then, for a smaller subset, mobilizes them to violence."I mean, it's not quite the same thing, because we're not talking about boredom but about a loss or perceived loss of control, mostly. But it's sort of interesting to me that part of what this woman's saying is that without stuff to do like work and taking your kids to events and stuff, some people are going to have too much time on their hands and get into crazy stuff that could lead at least some of them to potential violence. Which is why I say Wing should take up some sort of practical discipline, a way, in Japanese terms. Not that Wing's going to commit violence or develop extreme beliefs or anything, but I think it *can* be one of the things that can give that stronger sense of self. Of course, that might not work for everybody, so. I know it has more videos, but it has this video, which isn't in the list.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEJywXIluhkI just let the page of videos sit for more than five minutes. It shouldn't take *that* long to load videos, I don't think anyway. Scrolling in a list of Youtube videos.
Scrolling in a list of Youtube videos. Heyo all.So sometimes, if I go to somebody's channel on Youtube and click on videos, I can scroll down in the list, e.g. moving by headings, and if I get to the bottom, move with the arrow keys, it realizes I'm at the bottom, and loads more videos. Other times, I get to the bottom, and below the last video, it says "dialogue", and it won't load anymore videos. Here's a channel from a pissy dude I used to know, that does it for me.https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2gM1t … ;flow=gridI can get to "machines, 1950", but after that, I can't scroll anymore. This is with latest Windows, Firefox, and NVDA. Anybody have any ideas? My wife says what's happening is that I'm scrolling down to just an inch or less on the scroll bar, so it doesn't get all the way to the bottom and start scrolling in new videos. Some channels work, they have tons of videos, and I can just keep scrolling more in. Others just get to a certain point, and even though there are more videos, nothing. Oh yeah, and please don't suggest another browser. I'm quite happy with Firefox and there's no real reason that this should be a browser issue, since it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. SO clearly Firefox and NVDA can function with this scrolling to load more videos thing Youtube has going on. I was going to contact Youtube or Google about it, but I have no idea how to do that, other than mailing Youtube an actual letter. Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday
Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday Some great posts. I'll also add that Wing is interested in language. So sometimes, I think he just posts things because he thinks they're interesting quotes, you know?Oh and to Mayana specifically, good stuff. I don't think, for me anyway, and I'd guess Wing since he says there's a lot to answer, that it has to be you know super academic philosophy. I think your post was fine and really did engage it. And now you know it's Cioran in case you're interested in checking it out, or not as the case may be. I figure any kind of learning or real engagement is worth it you know? I mean, even if you disagree with Cioran, the quote in post 1, now you maybe have a better idea of why, and your own philosophy, your own outlook, can be a little stronger. That's why I figure reading even disagreement, if it's intelligent, is good for us. Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday
Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday I don't think it has much to do with translation. Cioran does seem to write in a somewhat obscure manner. He probably did it intentionally, as a kind of poetry. I say that because he's obviously using literary allusions, e.g. "liberated from sweat" and then referencing "the first curse". But I could equally do that in another kind of setting, like so.Jenkins was really angrier, angrier than I'd even seen her. It didn't matter. I thought he should know what was going on, and if Jenkins turned me into the eagle-ravaged bringer of fire for that? So be it. He had to know how the Americans were playing him. That's just stuff I made up, think of it as an excerpt from a spy novel, which you should be able to get even if you have no idea about the reference to fire. Just FYI, it's a reference to Prometheus, who in Greek myth gave man fire, among other things, and because of the stuff he did, he was punished by being chained to a rock and having his liver eaten from his body by a giant eagle every day, it grew back at night. The fact that I chose to make that reference does make it harder to understand if you don't know Greek mythology, but it shouldn't be impossible to get the basic sense of it, even if you don't know the reference. Of course I wrote in plainer language around it, but still, you get the idea. Knowing what "the first curse" refers to might be helpful, but it's hardly necessary to get the gist of it, namely, what would happen if we had months and months of not having to work? Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday 16:No no no no no, you are clearly wrong. It's a bunch of mystical gibberish that's impossible to understand in any way whatsoever. So there's no way some sort of TV series could have had philosophical parallels. Nope, simply couldn't happen. Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday
Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday Ethin: That's what it means. And yeah, I did jab at you guys, because you're acting like Wing's just this dumbass posting a bunch of idiocy. Shred his philosophy to bits all you like. But then actually do that. Hint, "see how other people in the world think about Sunday because they work on Sunday" isn't shredding his philosophy, it's completely failing to even understand it.It's like if I posted this long thing about a beautiful unicorn and then said "See the beauty of the unicorn in your own life" and you guys responded with "unicorns don't exist asshole". Yeah duh. It's called a metaphor. Responding like that wouldn't be doing a single thing against my philosophy, it would just be missing the point entirely. So let's look at what he actually quoted a bit."If Sunday afternoons were extended for months, where would humanity get to, liberated from sweat, from the weight of the first curse? The experiment would be worth the trouble."So, Sunday afternoon gets extended for months. What does that mean? We're "liberated from sweat and the first curse". OMG, it's mystical bullshit! Except no, no it isn't."To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’“Cursed is the ground because of you;through painful toil you will eat food from itall the days of your life.It will produce thorns and thistles for you,and you will eat the plants of the field.By the sweat of your browyou will eat your fooduntil you return to the ground, since from it you were taken;for dust you areand to dust you will return.”" Genesis, 3:17-19So, the "liberated from sweat" gives us the hint that "the first curse" is the curse of work. Man that sure was hard wasn't it? Next we get to every second being an intolerable torment. Why? Because we're bored because we lack the distraction of work. I'm not going to bother going through the whole thing. But I just gave you two really straightforward examples of how yes, what I posted in 14 is pretty much exactly what it's saying. And again, let me stress, I don't agree with it like, at all.I don't think life is a big giant set of things we do to distract ourselves from boredom and hence from the whole problem that we even exist. I agree, that's a ridiculous philosophy. But it *is* a philosophy. Actually it's a set of related philosophies, because I'd put Sartre in here too, except for Sartre, we're paralyzed by intolerable freedom/choice, I think, it's been a while since I've read any Sartre. But I mean, these are real philosophies, studied by real philosophy departments and stuff. A quick search tells me that's a quote from "A Short History of Decay", by E. M. Cioran.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emil_CioranAgain, saying "that's a bunch of mystical bullshit I don't want to decode" is fine. But that's not a philosophical response. It's just you pissing and moaning about something you can't, or are unwilling to, comprehend. If that's too much work that you don't want to bother with, awesome. But then why respond at all? You're just making a choice that's dumb for everybody. It's dumb for you because you are, by your own admission, wasting your own time. It's dumb for the rest of us because you claim you're responding philosophically or "talking philosophy" when you're doing no such thing, and you're insulting people while failing to do so.I think it's a perfectly fine stance to refuse to slog one's way through Sartre, for example. But then you can't simultaneously say that Sartre's talking a bunch of bullshit, because you have no idea *what* Sartre's talking, because you haven't put in the work to find out one way or the other. And I mean, I get that. I haven't slogged my way through City of God by Augustine either, because good holy gods have you seen that thing? Here's a sample sentence. "Many of them, indeed, being reclaimed from their ungodly error, have become sufficiently creditable citizens of this city; but many are so inflamed with hatred against it, and are so ungrateful to its Redeemer for His signal benefits, as to forget that they would now be unable to utter a single word to its prejudice, had they not found in its sacred places, as they fled from the enemy's steel, that life in which they now boast themselves." I think some sentences take up a whole page, depending on the translation. But I don't go around saying that City of God is a bunch of mystical claptrap either. Because I haven't read it, only skimmed it briefly. Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday
Re: A humanity unbound by all it's reality turned in to an eternal sunday Look, I agree, whatever he's quoting from is some first class bullshit. But you've got to understand, he's quoting some pessimistic or existential philosopher. All of which is to say, you guys are taking him way too fucking literally with the time dilation and what would happen to plants and shit.In essence what his post is saying runs something like this. Human beings distract themselves with a bunch of stuff, as somebody put it, they have shit to get done. Work, kids, hobbies, whatever. But if a day where you didn't have to do anything was eternal, eventually you'd get bored with all of the distractions. Now here's where I'm guessing a bit. Once you get bored, like really truly bored such that nothing satisfies, you'll realize this problem of existence, you are, you have being, but what's the point? And you'll realize this because you're bored, because if this stuff that you have to or want to get done isn't a distraction from existence, you'd be doing it, you wouldn't be bored.I'm sorry. I disagree with it philosophically, and I wish Wing would cite his sources because I'm pretty sure that's mostly a really long quote from somebody, and I realize the language isn't the most straightforward thing in the world. But I feel like a lot of you aren't even trying. And that's fine. There's no requirement that you pay attention to it. But then just don't pay attention to it. There's no reason to insult Wing over it all. Nobody's forcing you to read it, or to try and understand it, or to respond to it, and so on. If you think it's gibberish that doesn't make sense to you, cool. I think we all kind of get that by now. I'll also add, while I'm at castigating people, that this wasn't a question. Wing didn't come in asking you for something that he'll then ignore. It's pretty much a big giant statement. You'd think people who have an issue with that and think they're intelligent would have better reading comprehension, but I guess not. Take the DNA challenge!
Take the DNA challenge! It's easy! Just get some of your DNA, put it in the microwave and ...No wait, hang on, it's nothing like that at all. It's like this.https://1drv.ms/u/s!AvNLoeXlSvzMkwqSK0X … I?e=lkGCizBasically, and there's an HTML file explaining all of this, I took text of the first 1000 lines of the human genome project and turned it into music. If you don't want to mess around with the text stuff, I include midi files of the test version and the full version. The challenge is that you can take the pre-made midi files, or start from the text, and make your own crazy versions. And by all the gods if you do, put them up somewhere so we can all hear them!Technical note:I don't think I included this in the HTML. As I understand it, the first 1K lines are only half of what should be there, because DNA is in paired bases. I think they only list one base, because the other one is implied. You'll have to look up DNA if you want to add the pairs in yourself, you should be able to do it with a fairly simple program, I just haven't gotten round to figuring it all out myself yet. That's mostly because I forgot about this thing and found it a few months ago, and then promptly forgot about it again.I'd be curious to hear what, if anything, anybody does with it. The process of modifying the text musical representation and generating new midi files is pretty straightforward, so you should be able to mess with things like time signatures and such if you're not super into midi. Then you just pull the midi into the DAW/sequencer of your choice, orchestrate as you see fit, and generate an MP3 or OGG or whatever. Also if you do a modified midi, I'd love to get hold of that too, or the text source if you change it that way. If you don't want to do anything with it, at least you get to hear six hours plus of weird minimalist music based on DNA, if that's the sort of thing that interests you in any way whatsoever. Enjoy! Re: RHVoice for NVDA 2020.3? Huh, apparently the new version of the addon has rate boost, or at least, if that's not new, I didn't notice it before. Makes RH a lot more usable. Wish it had more voices, because the Scottish one is really the best English voice, but sometimes, I don't want things read in a Scottish accent. I mean normally I'm all for that kind of thing, but sometimes, you want something different. Also, like eSpeak, it could pause a bit more at some places. But honestly, not bad at all now that it has rate boost. I've snagged the scripts to make new voices. Re: Why can't we talk about certain things on the forum?
Re: Why can't we talk about certain things on the forum? I have no idea who Brad is, nor do I care. I'm going to take the question seriously because I've just come off a research jag digging into old weaving techniques for the hell of it, because that's the kind of shit I do, and I'm bored. I also think there's another side to this people are missing or not explaining because Brad has this history. So sit back and grab a drink, because it's story time with uncle Khomus! So me and a couple of friends used to run a small internet radio station. We didn't get a ton of people, but it was fun. One day we got email that was probably spam that we'd be reported if we weren't legal. I was doing the technical side of things and really didn't know much about what had to happen, but after finding out the penalties, we'll get to those in a minute, I for damn sure figured it out. I informed everybody that we were going legal. They were not happy, we'll get to why in a minute as well. I told them the management had made the decision, so deal. Well they were asking the same question Brad is, come on dude, we're small, who the hell's gonna check? Who's gonna care?First, that didn't matter to me because the potential fallout was like up to five years in jail and a ten thousand dollar fine. That was per song. People didn't like going legal because there were rules, and they were kind of confusing, you can't play more than two songs in a row from the same artist and album, or more than three songs from the same album in a three hour period. Ir was three and four if it was different albums or a compilation. There were more but that should be enough of a sample. But still, Brad wonders, who cares? There are other internet radio stations that aren't legal and probably play whatever they want. Who's going to check?First of all, people probably do check. But suppose they don't, what's the problem? Look at this forum. All you need is somebody to be pissed off about something somebody did in the forum to find a post about something illegal and report it. I don't know who'd you'd report something like that too, but it wouldn't take me too long to fire up a search engine and find out. Same thing with our radio station, all that needed to happen is for somebody to get pissed about a management decision, it happened, or even a listener to hate us or feel like we were competition. They report us, and wham! At *best*, we get shut down. At worst, we pay a bunch of money we don't have and go to jail.I don't know what the penalty would be for this site. But having it all taken down? Sure, I could see that potentially happening. As soon as the powers that be check about post A, even if it gets taken down, they're probably going to be checking other posts. Who's going through all of the posts on this site, not to mention games, and checking to make sure every single thing is legal? Any idea how much time that would take, even assuming the admins or whomever were given that time and the whole site wasn't just slammed as soon as another overlooked violation was found? Also remember this isn't just you personally. By that I mean, it's not like you got to steal five things, and if you get caught for the sixth, so what? That just affects you and whomever you stole from. Here, your actions can effect, well I don't know how many people we have on the forum, but let's say a bunch of other people.I know, just go to What's App or Reddit or whatever. Me personally, I don't have a phone, which IIRC you need to at least activate What's App. Reddit is absolutely horrible to use, as far as I'm concerned. Personally, I'm not a chat person anyway, so stuff like Discord or what have you doesn't appeal to me much either. I guess what I'm saying is that, aside from the issues between people here, this place seems to work pretty well. It's a central place to get news about new games and such. I don't see why there should be a risk of having it shut down because you can't be bothered to go to any of the countless other places to talk about the stuff you can't talk about here, which seems like a pretty limited subset of things, to be honest. Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum...
Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum... Oh it's worse than Latin! Greek, French, Hebrew, German, Irish, we've stolen a lot of stuff, or borrowed it, if you like. And borrowing's only the half of it. Some of our grammar rules were imposed because British dudes of earlier centuries thought Latin was the awesome language of learning and English was vulgar and disgusting, and should work more like Latin. That's where the rule about not splitting infinitives comes from. English splits infinitives all the time and has done so for ages. But you couldn't split infinitives in Latin, so you can't in English, according to old Brit grammarians. A split infinitive, in case you don't know, is where you stick something between to and the verb. The most famous example is "to boldly go where no one has gone before" from Star Trek. According to these fussy old Brit grammar dudes, it should be "to go boldly", which just sounds weird. But wait, it gets even better! Some of our spelling is weird because it preserves older features of the language, knight is a great example. Originally, as I've mentioned, the 'c' would be pronounced, hard so like a 'k', but the 'h' represents the 'ch' as in German or in Scottish loch. Eventually we changed the pronunciation, but kept the spelling, more or less, for historical reasons. But let's look at words like debt and doubt. What is 'b' doing in those words? Nothing, because it originally didn't exist. Debt and doubt were sensibly spelled exactly the way they sound, det and dout. Those same fussy Brit grammar dudes decided that we needed to stick a 'b' in there to remind us that these words came from Latin, debitum and dubitare respectively. In dubitare you can see that Latin infinitives have verbal endings like German or Spanish, so you can't split them, there's nothing to split. But you want to know my absolute favorite example of Latin is the fancy language of learning, and English is vulgar and disgusting? Take the words supervisor and overseer. Supervisor is Latin, and overseer is English, a perfectly Germanic word. They literally mean the exact same thing and even work exactly the same way, super = over and visor = seer. Now let's say you're on a job and have somebody above you. If you have a supervisor, you're working in some random office job or what have you, pick whatever you like. If you have an overseer? Your either in the Bible as a slave or a dystopian science fiction story, probably also as a slave. maybe that's different for British English or English somewhere else, but in America, that's pretty much the case. Nobody that I know of uses overseer in an employment context. It's always supervisor.Oh yeah, Re: the EgyptiansI'm pretty sure Sumerian writing came first historically as well, but it's close enough that the question's stil l very much up in the air. I feel bad for the Sumerians though. They always seem to get ignored. Try and find a decent documentary on them for example. It's too bad too, they have some cool myths and stuff, and the story of the discovery and decipherment of cuneiform is as interesting as anything about hieroglyphics. This is older, but see the introduction.https://www.sacred-texts.com/ane/sum/index.htmFor fuller and more modern versions of the myths, as well as other Sumerian literature, see:https://etcsl.orinst.ox.ac.uk/ URL: https://forum.audiogames.net/post/609805/#p609805 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum...
Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum... The problem with claiming that the Latin alphabet was influenced by Egyptian hieroglyphics is that it's pretty speculative. What we know is that Semitic peoples, probably Canaanite, were influenced by the concept of writing from the Egyptians, and started making their own signs for their own purposes. It's possible that some of those signs were influenced by, or even originated from, hieroglyphics. The problem is that, so far as I know, we just don't have enough evidence to settle things one way or the other. We know that a proto-Sinaitic script was devised by Semitic people in Egypt or under Egyptian control. We know that said proto-Sinaitic script eventually evolved into an alphabet, the Phoenician alphabet to be exact. We know that the Phoenicians spread it all over the place. We know that different regions of Semitic speakers had differently ordered alphabets, though I think Ugaritic actually preserved both orders. We know that the Phoenician alphabet gave rise to most, if not all, other alphabets in the world, please note that's alphabets and not writing systems. Writing was invented independently at least three different times, by the Sumerians, the Egyptians, (though I've heard there's evidence that Sumerian cuneiform influenced Egyptian but I haven't read up on it enough to say one way or the other), and in China. I'm pretty sure it was also invented in the Americas, e.g. there are Mayan or Incan hieroglyphs, but I have a hard time keeping all of those cultures straight in my head. But anyway, unless somebody knows something I don't, there's just not enough evidence one way or the other to definitely say whether or not the proto-Sinaitic script that eventually became the various Semitic alphabets was based on/influenced by hieroglyphics, aside from the general concept of using signs to record language. Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum...
Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum... Sorry Germans, that should be Kneipe shouldn't it? What we Americans call a bar and the Brits call a pub? Also, let's compare the words for day. In Old English it was dæg, the 'ae' character is like the 'a' in that and the 'g' would get pronounced like a 'y' in modern English, because it follows a vowel. In Dutch it's dag, in German Tag, in Old Norse dagr, and dags in Gothic. So you can see this word exists all across the Germanic languages. Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum...
Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum... The Latin alphabet wasn't influenced by Egyptian hieroglyphics, or if it was, it was incredibly indirect. The alphabet as we know it is typically understood to go back to a Semitic language, Phoenician to be exact.Re: English as a Germanic languageYou really have to go back to Old English to see this. For instance, German verbs don't do infinitives like we do, "to eat", they have endings, essen, gehen. Actually so far as I know the only ending is -en. In Old English, you had two endings, e.g. etan to eat, gan to go, or ascian to ask, interestingly, axian was also to ask and aks was an accepted verb in literary English until, I believe, the 17--s. I think, though I'm not a hundred percent certain about this, that the different verbal endings had to do with strong and weak verbs, -an was for strong verbs and -ian was for weak verbs. Weak verbs are regular, e.g. he asks, he asked. Strong verbs change, he is going, he went.Like modern German, Old English had cases. These are changes that occur in nouns when they do certain things, which are too complicated to get into unless somebody really wants me to. So the basic word for stone in Old English was stan, but it might become stanum in certain situations. Stone is stein in German, there's a vowel change but otherwise, it's the same word. Similarly, Eng. for, Ger. vor. German people feel free to correct me because my German was years ago, I can't find an online dictionary, and I've also started learning Pennsylvania Deitsch which is its own dialect.Old English also did compound words, like modern German. For instance, the Old English verse I posted previously was a verse from the Old English Rune Poem. In it we see the words oferhyrned, lit. overhorned, i.e. it has really big horns, and morstapa, lit. moor -stepper. A lot of the basic words we use are of Germanic origin. For example in that last sentence we have a, lot, of, the, words, we, are. Some things are obscured by pronunciation or spelling changes. For instance, ship comes from Old English scip, the initial 'sc' was prounced 'sh', like Ger. 'sch'. Knight is from OE cniht, the initial 'c' sound was pronounced and always hard. This still occurs in German, e.g. Knipe. I'm not up enough on Anglo-Saxon or German grammar to compare the two, but suffice to say, our grammar is solidly Germanic. Hope this helps, and bother me with further questions. If I don't know, I'll see if I can do some research and find out, all of this is off the top of my head mostly. Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum...
Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum... English is absolutely a Germanic language. You can tell because most of the basic words are solidly Germanic. Old English, or Anglo-Saxon, borrowed a lot of Latin, it's true, but if you saw it, it would look a lot more like German. Here's some, so you can see it.Ur byþ anmod ond oferhyrned, felafrecne deor, feohteþ mid hornummære morstapa; þæt is modig wuht. Here's some Middle English, which was the successor to Old English.Nightes when I wende and wake,Forthy min wonges waxeth won;Levedy, all for thine sakeLonginge is ylent me on.In world nis non so witer monThat al hire bounte telle con;Hire swire is whittore then the swon,And feirest may in towne.Early Modern English is Shakespeare or the King James Bible, for example. Middle English was the start of a lot more Latin borrowing, via Norman French. That's because Norman French was the language of the nobility and law, as opposed to Old English, which was the language of the common people conquered by the Normans. Old English in particular had cases, like German. Nowadays most cases are gone, except for whom and a few other words. But note that Early Modern English thou is the equivalent of Ger. du. The verbs even worked the same, e.g. thou runnest, du rennst. English has certainly borrowed from a lot of other languages. But the base of it, which includes a lot of words and the grammar, are completely Germanic. Re: Accessibility in video games
Re: Accessibility in video games Well it's not just games though, I mean in terms of mechanics, like what do I do at place X in game Y.I know Liam for example has mentioned using, I think, a capture card with his X-Box so he can do OCR on menus. Somebody who hears about "playable" or "accessible" games and decides to get a console isn't going to know a damn thing about that. I get not going through how you're doing whatever on every game stream, that would probably be pretty boring. But I mean, maybe somebody will see that they need additional hardware and decide not to play because it's not for them. That's kind of more what I mean, even just the basic setup. Something like Slay The Spire is accessible, though it still has a learning curve. Something like Hades doesn't sound very accessible, from my standpoint, at least I don't see how people who play it, if they are, are doing it. But you know you ask, "what's accessible", and somebody will go "fighting game X", and then you find out you need a capture card, or sighted assistance in parts, or whatever. I'd call that playable, but with a lot of work. I'm not gonna piss on anybody doing that, it's great that they're enjoying it.I just wish they'd be forthcoming about what it involves so that you have a much better idea about what the playable/accessible claim means. I think they feel that they've figured out a way to do it, so that means everybody can or should do that, and that's just not the case. I personally don't care so much about whether game X is fully accessible or involves a lot of button mashing or whatever. I mean I do, because I'd like to know what experience I'm getting. But I don't care in terms of what we might call really playable. That's a debate I'm not interested in having. You're playing it and enjoying it? Awesome! It's playable for you, whatever that means to you. But I think the problem is that people then just claim it's playable, without specifying what that actually means in practical terms. I should be fair and say some people. I think Liam, the only person I follow on any kind of regular basis so feel free to recommend more people if you think it's worth it, is pretty up front about how playable or not a game is, at least in general terms. And I don't fault him for not doing more because he is trying to just stream games and have fun, and getting into the nuts and bolts every single time would bore people to tears. But he at least tells you some stuff and gives critiques and all.But yeah, more guides and more practical discussion so people know what "playable" means in terms of each game would be really helpful. I mean people keep talking about consoles getting more and more accessible. That's probably true. But is it to the point where I'd be willing to buy one? Not so far as I can see, and none of the vague accessibility talk from most places is changing my mind. And I think that's sad because the big way to get more of this stuff happening is for more people to support it by buying it and using it. Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum...
Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum... I don't remember the history of capital letters right off, but they're related to manuscripts, in other words books where everything was written or copied by hand. But also in manuscripts, words were often written without spaces. Fun fact, the "X" in Xmas is actually a Christian abbreviation from manuscripts, where X represented the Greek letter chi, which also looks like an X, the first letter of Christ in Greek. It was used to save space, because paper and other writing materials were valuable, not to mention saving some labor. If I recall rightly, capital letters were often decorated as well, and made fairly large. Re: Accessibility in video games
Re: Accessibility in video games I think the thing that frustrates me personally is like a 1 to Camlorn's 20.5 of raging. You ask what games are accessible, e.g. on Steam with controllers. "Oh fighting games like Ninja Bloodstorm Revinocu Diorama Fight Park 3.7"! Then you go, OK, let's check that out on Youtube, and it's just a bunch of fighting noises. Then you ask about accessibility, and it's pretty much "well you can hear the direction of the enemies".For me, that's not accessibility, at least not as it stands. I don't mean that in quite the same sense Camlorn does. I mean, OK, maybe it's playable somehow or other. But "you can tell the direction of the enemies" doesn't really help me much. OK, great. How am I navigating stuff? How am I picking options, fighting the enemies, things like that? I have no idea, and a lot of more mainstream game players seem to have that attitude of "I had to suffer through figuring it out, you do that too".So for me, I check out games like that on Youtube, and I have absolutely no idea what in the hell's going on. Like I said, it's just a bunch of random fighting noises. So I mean, I've asked about this a few times over the years, e.g. what X-Box stuff is accessible, is it worth getting one, stuff like that. I either get vague answers or crickets. If people really want to push for more mainstream game accessibility, getting something together to help potential newbies would be a big step, IMO. Maybe there's something out there I'm just unfamiliar with. But just a good solid getting started with more mainstream games, what's available, how do they work, practically speaking, stuff like that. Then people could make their own decisions about whether or not Hades or Warrior Lizards 12 or whatever is actually accessible and worth buying on Steam or shelling out for a console or what have you. I'm all fine with different people being able to handle different levels of accessibility and getting enjoyment from it. But it's frustrating, for me at least, to be told "oh yeah X is accessible", when you can mostly only really find that out by spending money on X, which I will happily do. Then you manage to chase down some game playing of X and it's just random noises, so as far as you can tell, no, X isn't really accessible at all.And I mean, I'm like, old and shit. I played video games, totally blind, on the Atari 2600 when it first came out. So I'm down with some random joystick movement and button mashing, up to a point. But to Camlorn's point, this ain't the old days of Space Invaders and stuff. That approach seems a lot less satisfying and useful in modern games. Re: Help me choose the right road
Re: Help me choose the right road It really depends on what kind of programming you want to do. I mean, if you're programming a lot of web stuff for instance, you're probably not going to need a lot of math, besides understanding how variables work and all. On the other hand, if you're programming 3D graphics, get ready to bust out some calculus. It's true computer science majors will make you take a bunch of math, that's why I got out of mine, I couldn't hack calculus. I kind of wish I got to tackle linear algebra though because it sounds kind of interesting. Anyway, you should be able to contact places you're interested in and talk to them about what their courses entail, in terms of what kind of math and the amount of math you need to take. But I also agree with the other poster. If you're really interested, learning math will take care of itself just as part of what you need to get to what you're interested in. Plus you should already have some motivation if you've had a good teacher. If you still have that teacher, see if you can talk to them about what kinds of strategies work for you for learning math. Then maybe you can tell other teachers or other people you're working with, e.g. if people are reading you math problems or you get a tutor or what have you. Accessible burner for blu ray?
Accessible burner for blu ray? Heyo all.I need an external optical drive for my laptop. I see some can do blu ray which can hold like 50 GB of data. Is there an accessible program for Windows that will deal with it? In particular, I'd like to be able to point it at a folder and have it calculate whatever it needs to split it up and prompt for new disks as necessary, for backup purposes obviously. If there isn't then I can save myself a bunch of money, considering DVD drives are around $30-$40, and the blu ray ones are around $100. Re: Non-religion specific prayers
Re: Non-religion specific prayers Ah yes, the Charvakas. I think we covered them a bit in a Buddhist philosophy class, of all places, probably because they competed with abhidharma, or it debated with them. Or possibly Nagarjuna covered them as a position he was debating against, but I don't think so. For some reason it's really connected to Abhidharma in my mind. But honestly I could never keep all of the early Buddhist philosophical schools straight, I think mostly because their obscure debates about what constitutes a person or whether or not there was actually such a thing as a person, which BTW was somehow a different thing from "the self", made my face hurt. Not Far from BuddhahoodA university student while visiting Gasan asked him: "Have you ever read the Christian Bible?""No, read it to me," said Gasan. The student opened the Bible and read from St. Matthew: "And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin, and yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. . . . Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself."Gasan said: "Whoever uttered those words I consider an enlightened man."The student continued reading: "Ask and it shall be given you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you. For everyone that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened."Gasan remarked: "That is excellent. Whoever said that is not far from Buddhahood." Re: Non-religion specific prayers
Re: Non-religion specific prayers Gaurav: Thanks! I thought so, but it's been forever since I tackled any Jainism.Draq: Yeah, all of the science vs. religion stuff is pretty modern. That's not to say there weren't atheists, lots of those. But as an example, because this gets trotted out a lot, take Galileo. The standard atheist understanding of Galileo goes like this. He championed the Copernican model, where the earth moves round the sun, and did stuff with his telescope and so on. The Catholic Church condemned it as heresy and he got tried and locked in his house and so on. What actually happened however is a little more complicated. What the church objected to was that Galileo was claiming that the Copernican model of the universe was true. However, Galileo had absolutely no proof of this whatsoever, nobody did at the time. So what the church wanted him to do was to teach it as a model, what we might call a theory today in the sense of something we're investigating, not like the theory of evolution which is pretty solidly proven.Galileo refused. Now the problem is that, because we now know he was right, we just project that back and say the church condemned him for being all sciency and correct and stuff. But again, at the time, absolutely nobody had anything that made the Copernican model any more or less true than the Ptolemaic model, which had been serving everybody well for nearly 1500 years. So the falsehood the church was condemning him for wasn't the idea that Copernicus was right. It was the idea that Galileo was yelling about how this thing was totes true with no backing whatsoever. Even then, he could have taught it, if he taught it as something he thought of as a compelling alternative. But he refused and kept insisting that it was absolutely true. Note also that Copernicus was a priest, something people into the war between religion and science fail to mention, for some reason. Re: Non-religion specific prayers
Re: Non-religion specific prayers Draq opined: "Religions that involve the worship of a deity seem to attempt to serve two basic functions. The first is explaining where we all came from and why we're here. As far as the Abrahamic religions go, those teach us that we were created by God to serve God, more or less. Science and religion have always been at odds about this."See, again, it would help if you knew what you were talking about. Science and religion really haven't been "at odds" until the latter half of the 1800s, and then largely in America. The idea comes largely from two books, one put out in 1874 and the other in 1896. The latter book popularized the idea that before Columbus, everybody thought the earth was flat and that the idea that the earth was round was opposed by the Catholic Church.A passing acquaintance with history would demonstrate the falseness of this claim. The ancient Greeks knew that the earth was round and gave several proofs, and from approximately 1000 CE onward, the church incorporated Greek philosophy, courtesy of the Islamic world which preserved quite a bit of it lost to the Christian world.Later, in the early 1900s, a segment of American Christianity vehemently reacted to what it saw as attacks on it by the modern world, culminating in the publication of a set of books called "The Fundamentals" between 1910-1915. Many ideas about the end of the world, e.g. the rapture, also came about around this time. My point is, these are not very old ideas, considering the entire history of Western science and Christianity."The second is probably going to ruffle some feathers and step on some toes, but I have a suspicion that a lot of these religions were created to control the masses. What better way to keep people in line than to convince them that an all powerful, Omnipotent being will punish them if they do something wrong, and that if they don't believe in this being that they'll go to some place of eternal torment when they die?Religions can have some good aspects such as teaching morality and giving people a sense of purpose as well, but the above are the two main things I've identified."Again, that's because you have no idea of what you're talking about. There are about two or three religions in the world with an omnipotent god. They are Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism. Possibly Baha'i has one as well, but it's been a while since I've done any reading in Baha'i. Some forms of Hinduism can be said to as well, e.g. Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, but considering that in Arjuna's vision of Krishna Arjuna is told that since Krishna is essentially everything/everywhere even Krishna's enemies end up at Krishna in the end, it can hardly be said that Krishna, if we're considering him to be an omnipotent god, is condemning people to a place of punishment, eternal or otherwise.Christianity and Islam both have places of punishment, I forget if Islam's is eternal but it's probably a safe assumption. That's two religions, in the whole history of religions that we know about, which covers some five thousand years, that work in the way you've described. Actually, I'll tell you what. Let me be nice to you. Let's assume Baha'i works that way too. Then we'll throw in Zoroastrianism, because even though it's kind of polytheistic, it does have a ruling god and it does have a place of punishment, and I think some writings even consider it to be eternal. I totally forget how Jainism works, so let's give you that one too, just for the hell of it, pun intended. We're up to five whole religions, and I'm being really generous to you here, that work in the manner you describe, i.e. an omnipotent god who will punish you eternally. So let's start looking at some other modern religions that don't work like this at all. Confucianism, Daoism, Shinto, all forms of Buddhism, most forms of Hinduism, pretty much any indigenous religion I've ever read about which covers huge chunks of the world including all of North and South America, Africa, Oceania (Australia, Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia and so on), and large parts of Asia. Basically find a people still practicing their indigenous religion, and you don't have any of this.Moving right along, if we consider historical religions, you're up to five and a half, because in ancient Egyptian religion you could be eaten by something called Amemet, which devoured you if you didn't live according to Maat, truth, righteousness, law. That's assuming you got to go through the whole post-death ordeal for a shot at eternal life. That's not eternal punishment, but I'll grant you that having your soul devoured, so to speak, is pretty final, if not eternal, and it's certainly a punishment.Other than that? Sorry my friend. I've already covered the Sumerians in a previous post, ditto the Akkadians (Babylonians) and Assyrians (pretty much the same theology as the Akkadians). I've also covered the ancient Hebrews. I'm not super up on what happened to people in Canaanite

Re: Non-religion specific prayers Gaurav:There's a Zen story I can't find right now, just don't remember what book it's in, where somebody reads some of Jesus' words to a Zen master. Re: Non-religion specific prayers
Re: Non-religion specific prayers OK. Where do I start?"Example: Pantheism has formed more religions than any other world system of religiosity and continues to add gods faster than I can learn about them."Pantheism doesn't form anything. Pantheism means that God is in everything, or put another way, that everything is part of God. So already, you're wrong. As far as more gods being added than you can learn about, got any examples? Or do you just mean there are a lot of religions and/or gods in the world, and so you've given up on trying to learn about them?"Whatever you think about eastern world mysticism, whether you're the one with the universe type or you actually subscribe to one of scores of gods, not all of them believe the same exact thing fundamentally.""eastern world mysticism" huh? Man, you've really truly studied things I see. I'm sorry, since you're apparently treating every other religion besides whatever version of Christianity you subscribe as a mass of interchangeable "eastern world mysticism", I don't think that really requires a response from me."Meanwhile, in the western world, the question isn't one about which god to follow, but if god even exists."Riiight. Because there are no Buddhists, various forms of neopagans, the various new age religious movements, just as a few examples, all over the Western world. Nope, it's all whether the Christian god exists or not. Dude, you should maybe rethink this conversation."The atheist believes he does not. The theist believes he does."This is the first sensible thing you've said."The common basis of the general theist revolves on 4 simple words, 4 words the atheists opposes. those words are, "In the beginning, God."If the atheists opposes those four words and the theist believes in them, the question then becomes, how do you consolidate both as true?"Well, and I'm assuming the first half of this quote about Genesis is correct for the sake of argument, you don't. But see, this is foundationalism again. You want to have a fight, so you set this thing up where one thing has to be right, and one thing has to be wrong. Who cares? If you've found "in the beginning, God" to be true, that's great. It's got nothing to do with me, as far as I can tell, but maybe that's just because I follow some form of "eastern world mysticism" and I can't think properly or something.Because you think truth needs to be universal and foundational, you assume there has to be a fight, either A or B is true. But again, I point to a net. If the net is mostly round, that is the pattern of holes is round, does it matter that some holes in that section over there are diamond-shaped? If the net can work with multiple hole shapes, in other words be made up of different patterns of weaving and still function as a net, well there you go. The problem isn't solved, because the problem doesn't even exist. Re: Non-religion specific prayers
Re: Non-religion specific prayers Nocturnis: It would really help if you flesh out some of this stuff with examples, because you're just making these pronouncements like without truth everything is meaningless. What's "truth"? I mean, I can say it's true that I really like Tuvan throat singing, and that is in fact true. But I'm going to guess this isn't the kind of thing you're talking about. In any case, I'll try to respond. Most people think of philosophy like a building. If you believe thing A, it has to be justified by thing B, and thing B has to be justified by some other thing, and so on. This is called foundationalism. I, personally, am an anti-foundationalist. What I think makes way more sense is something called relational epistemology. What this means is that you discover things through their relationships. Paints don't mean much to me, being blind, but they have a great depth of meaning to an artist. So how do you find meaning or truth in such a philosophy? Think of it like a net, or like weaving. There's no starting point for a net. There's no one thing that has to be in order for a net to happen. A net works because of the relationships of the weaving material that makes it up. Unlike a building, which falls if it has no foundation, there's no central thing for a net to lose. So you find truth in relationships, between you and people, you and other things, stuff like that. It works like a net, not a building.Far from having no meaning, because there's no foundational universal truth, I'd argue that there's *more* meaning, because the meaning exists right now. It's something we have to actively work on. It's something that easily responds to new information, if that new information is relevant. There aren't crisis points, e.g. if I lose belief A, everything is lost. I don't have to have one thing, in other words, parts of the net may be made of metal, other parts might be made of plant fibers, and so on. That is to say, I can easily incorporate new ideas. Of course, this has to be done properly, otherwise you don't have a very good net. So consider properly understanding an idea as weaving it into your net well, so you don't have trailing fringes or something that doesn't truly fit. Now you might have problems, e.g. a hole in your net. You have to fix that, sure. But your entire net isn't destroyed just because you lose a part of it. Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? I'm nicer about it because I'd like that to change, not for her specifically, but for anybody. So I'm taking my own advice. You've got to make the damn argument. Now people have seen my reasoning, they can agree or disagree or ignore it or print it out and make a fancy origami hat with it. I've not only given reasoning,I've given actual evidence of how and why it works, oh speaking of which, he's another one I missed.https://www.cracked.com/personal-experi … it-up.htmlYou can also put marriage equality and trans issues in here, a big reason the stance on marriage equality changed, now the majority is in favor of it, is because lots of people got to know gay people. Sure, it took the courts to implement it in some cases, but US courts at least tend to go by the culture, in other words, they don't necessarily want to make huge changes opposed by a majority of the population. That's not to say they won't, as such, I'm just saying, it's a factor that shouldn't be ignored. I know right now trans issues are really playing catch up to marriage equality. But it's my view that, handled properly, they'll get to the same place we're at now with marriage equality. So I mean, I think we're talking about really important stuff here, and it's worth digging into a bit to see what works and what doesn't, you know? Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives?
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? Sure. Like I said, I get it. I wasn't being sarcastic at all. But to me, it's like wanting to punch somebody in the face. We all have impulses like that from time to time, but they don't really end up in any kind of good place.Let me give a quick example of what I'm talking about. Remember Trump's Access Hollywood tape? His excuse was "that's locker room talk". That's what a lot of his supporters said. People not only freaked out about that, when some Republicans said they wouldn't want that done ti their wife or daughter or sister, I saw people on Facebook yelling about how they shouldn't need a wife or daughter or sister, they should just know that you don't treat women that way. The locker room talk people were idiots who just didn't get it.So here we have people who are coming to the same conclusion, what Trump said was bad, but they're getting yelled at because they didn't come to it in the right way. That's bad enough, but then we have the other part. Here's how I look at it. If you just point at the locker room talk people and go "idiots who don't know any better", guess what? At the end of the day, they're still going to be those same people who don't get it, because you couldn't be bothered to make an argument or try and explain it to them. Now, should we do that every time? No.For example, we might not have the time. We might not have the energy at any given moment. We may decide this person just isn't reachable. That's fine, as a personal decision. But I think the more we can do that, the more we can try to meet people where they are, the more we can potentially get them to at least understand where we're coming from. But people will say, "but Khomus, these people are totally unreachable, they're racists and Q people and gh"! I'd like to offer a response to that with this article.https://www.cracked.com/personal-experi … -nazi.htmlMaybe you think racists aren't extreme enough. We'll get there, but first, have a video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORp3q1OaezwI know, you are thinking to yourself, "Khomus that's a cool video and all, but that's just more racists! You said there would be other stuff"! Well, how about a terrorist?https://www.cracked.com/personal-experi … orist.htmlHere's some more from said former terrorist, and a would-be school shooter to boot.https://www.cracked.com/blog/5-reasons- … you-think/My point with all of these articles and the video is this. If these people, the people we think of as extremists, people who join organizations devoted to dehumanization, people who have killed, if these people can be reached? Sorry, I know it's hard, and it's not magic that works every single time. But you've just lost your excuse for not talking to that crazy family member. Yes, it's slow. Yes, it might not always work. There are no guarantees. But from the evidence I've seen, see above for examples, this is what works, not whipping out your sexy sexy facts and waving them in people's faces because you think they've never seen them before, and now that they've seen your great big facts, they'll surely see the light and think in the right way now. As somebody on a BBS I'm on put it, "they've all seen the facts". Liberals in particular, in America anyway, have taken to being really smug and essentially assuming that anybody who doesn't think like them is either uneducated, so if they just get the proper facts they'll see the obvious rightness of the liberal view, or they're too dumb to understand the facts, or they're willfully ignorant. Not every liberal obviously, hell I'm pretty liberal and I'm writing a whole novel about not doing this. But in general, what you get is a lot of mockery and attempts to pwn the hick rednecks, rather than the assumption that they're people just like you who hold a different view, however incorrect you think it is. And understand, Stuff like the views of the KKK are 100% objectively incorrect, no doubt about it. But just yelling at them about how dumb and wrong and backward they are ain't gonna change any hearts and minds. They believe that stuff for a reason. It's doing something for them. Sometimes maybe all we can do is stop them with force, e.g. the IRA terrorist. But that shouldn't be the only thing we do, by any means. Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives?
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? Haily:I get the impulse to shut people down with your facts and righteous truth. I really do. The problem is, what that tends to do is make people defensive and then they dig in even harder. Me, I think this stuff should stop. So if some Q person is yelling about how we need a revolution, if you just go "yeah whatever idiot", or just go "here's A B C and D that shows why you're wrong, you moron", then they're just going to write you off as a libtard cuck snoeflake. What I'd do is try to understand what's behind it. I don't mean Q, that's obvious of course. But look, these people believe in things like Q for a reason. It's doing something for them. I'll admit, I have a hard time understanding what that is, because I'd think it would have to make you think that all of the global forces of evil are aimed directly at you and possibly your family, because now you know what they don't want you to. I don't see what constantly being afraid like that does for somebody. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they don't feel that way.But again, it's doing something for them, or they wouldn't believe it. To me, I don't think you should look at this as "I'm totally right and you're totally wrong". Let me put it this way. Liberals have been yelling facts at these people for years. How's that been working? I'm not saying you shouldn't bring up facts, or that you shouldn't tell somebody you think a thing is wrong. I'm saying you treat them as a human being, have empathy for them, find some stuff you agree on, yes it's there, and then have actual dialogue with them. Don't treat them as dumb brainwashed idiots who are too stupid to breathe. Because while it's satisfying to be all self-righteous and punch them in the face with the truth, it just makes them more of whatever they are, not less. And we should be trying to do the opposite, to make them see that stuff like storming the capitol has real human consequences that are bad, and maybe they really want to think before doing something like that. The alternative is that we just see them as wrongness personified and beat them in the face with our facts some more. But again, how's that been working out for us? Not too great. Re: Non-religion specific prayers
Re: Non-religion specific prayers Whoa boy howdy. Where do I even start?as an animist, I'm weird. I believe there are, let's call them powers, for lack of a better term. Rocks can have it, water, fire, the sun, mountains, trees, bagpipes, and so on and so on. It's not about explaining something I don't understand, nor were other people's gods. It's about relationships, at least for me.Suppose I say "how do I use a hammer"? You teach me that. Suppose I am learning to play an instrument, and learning a technique. I'm not getting it, and not getting it. I pick up a new instrument, and wham! There you go, I get the technique. Why hasn't the instrument taught me, just as you have taught me to use the hammer? I don't really see much of a difference. It's pretty much the same relationship. In short, I'm starting from an experience, a positive thing I've had happen to me, not a negative thing I can't explain. Similarly, I don't see why people couldn't have had, say, a religious experience of Zeus. Let me put it this way. If you're a Christian, you go, God/Jesus answered my prayer. That's an experience. Why do you assume that same thing couldn't have happened with Zeus, or Maui, or Tenger Etseg, or a waterfall, or what have you? Or if we're not to put "God" in a "man-made box", then why shouldn't I assume that this is God appearing to me in a way I can understand? I don't because I'm not a monotheist, but I'm just saying, it seems like a perfectly valid question. The thing is, lots of people have these dumb theories about how religions started, and I'm sorry but as somebody with a degree in religious studies, I gotta call things as I see 'em. Saying gods were used to explain things people didn't understand, or that religion came from a fear of death, or whatever weird theory you've picked up doesn't cut it. Basically this is because of the huge diversity of religious conceptions throughout the world. There's a fun game you play when you start doing religious studies. Some professor will go "OK, everybody knows what religion is, right"?Of course people will say yes, because they think they do. The professor will then ask somebody to throw out a definition. "it's about God!", somebody will say. Nope, lots of religions have multiple gods, try again. "It's about gods!", says somebody who thinks they've caught on. Nope, there are religions like Buddhism that technically have no gods at all, and the gods that exist are seen as other beings just like us, and not some sort of goal to strive for or as objects of prayer and worship."I've got it", somebody calls out, "it's about the supernatural"! Nope. Many religions see their conceptions as completely and utterly natural, not apart from the world at all, e.g. among some Polynesian and Melanesian societies, you sing prayers to the gods because if you don't, your canoe won't work. It's a technology, like building it in such a way that it doesn't allow water in, nothing mysterious or supernatural about it at all, has nothing to do with the favor or displeasure of gods, that's just how you make a canoe the right way.The next stage is usually something about a system, and priests. So then you point out that there are religions that don't work like that at all, no priests, no special buildings or anything, stuff like that. Just assume it works like that for any statement you make when you say "religion is about whatever" or "religion/gods/some aspect of religion came from this one thing". Let's try an example. Somebody once pontificated that religion came from a fear of death. Death was all scary, so people invented the afterlife to comfort them. This person was an atheist, naturally.I pointed out that in some religions, notably Buddhism and some forms of Hinduism, life was a problem to be escaped. Reincarnation, in other words, the thing that happens after you die, is a problem to be solved, not a comfort. Other conceptions of the afterlife weren't exactly all tea and crumpets, e.g. a Mesopotamian tablet, (I forget if it's Sumerian or Akkadian and I'm too lazy to go and look right now), describes the dead as eating clay and drinking sewage. In the Old Testament, there is nothing like hell but something called sheol, which means the pit or grave or possibly both, again too lazy. Much like Greek conceptions of the afterlife, everybody just went there and it was all dim and dark and they were pretty much these powerless shades. These afterlives, needless to say, don't seem to provide a lot of comfort. They responded by saying it's not about a comfortable afterlife, it's just the comfort of knowing what happens, it gets rid of the existential dread. I pointed out that under that conception, atheism was a religion because it says absolutely nothing happens to you after you die, except decomposition. That might not be comforting, but at least you know exactly what will happen. For some reason, they stopped talking to me after that.My point is, religion as a subject becomes a very
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives?
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? Huh. I could maybe do a podcast. I'm trying to save Youtube for music and some games maybe.Thanks. I appreciate it because yeah, I try to kind of make things funny, I mean not that I won't be serious, but I figure look, I'm just putting my thoughts out you know? I'm not trying to convert people, I'm just saying, here's the way I think about this. You know people are having a big problem now, they want to know how to change people's minds, and I get that. But the way they want to do it is they want to just come at people. They feel that if they go "you're wrong and this is how wrong you are you idiot", then they'll see that they're obviously wrong, and they'll change their way of thinking. But everybody thinks their stuff is obvious you know?So I figure look, I'm going to say my stuff, and maybe try to make it a bit funny so even if you disagree with me it's not an attack. Because I look at it this way. You never know how you're going to affect people. You take something like gay marriage. Some people were against it, but then they met gay people, often in their family, and they changed their mind. I figure if I don't just come at people, something I don't always achieve, I never know if three years later, somebody's going to see something and go, "oh, so that's what he meant about how nobody cares about statues", and maybe that will give them something to think about, whether it's literally statues or some other issue. Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives?
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? Redfox: Yeah. I mean look, I think violence is dumb, although I will say I do not give a good gods damn about the statues, I'll get to those in a minute. But I mean, I understand it, you know? Even the people storming the capitol. I get, on an intellectual level, that if you have Trump telling you for months and months that the election will be stolen, and also you think he's the one that's going to save us from a world-girding conspiracy of Satanic pedophiles, and suddenly we're down to the last thing, which is Pence ignoring the Electoral College votes and making the states have a do-over, again something he literally can't do, and then he fails to do it? Well, what did you expect would happen? I understand why these people are pissed off, I just don't agree with them at all and don't understand them at all on another level, because it's all stuff they've manufactured. Seriously if you've never looked into what Q believes, check out the intro episode of the QAnon Anonymous podcast. It is crazy stuff. Now back to BLM. Again, I think violence is dumb. But it's dumb because it doesn't really accomplish anything. We have stuff to look back on, notably the civil rights era and the protests of the 1960s. Street protests didn't really accomplish much, it was the non-violent demonstrations and the courts and such that got stuff to change. So I mean, to me, it's just not an effective way to achieve what you want to achieve, you know? But BLM *mostly* damaged property and didn't try to stop our entire country's government, and I think that's a pretty important difference. And look, and here's where the statues come in, some of the outrage against BLM is bullshit. I will prove it to you with something completely unrelated to BLM or violence or any of that. What do people in the US do to celebrate Columbus Day? I'll tell you what they do. By and large, absolutely nothing whatsoever. Oh some people might get the day off. You might find a parade here and there. But mostly, like President's Day, it's a time for places like mattress stores to fire up another mess of sales ads.But let somebody suggest that maybe changing it to Native American Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day might be better, and watch a certain segment of the population freak right the hell out, even though they didn't care about it for the last fifty years. It's like horse racing, nobody cares about that either. Do you know how I know this? Because the only time I hear about horse racing is one day a year, when everybody and their brother wants to tell me that Neodymium And Glass Paperweight or Faerie-proof Contraption or Maximillian PlunderPants, or whatever ridiculously-named horse just won the Kentucky Durby.Same thing with statues basically. People start saying "hey maybe that statue of General Dickface who owned three hundred slaves should come down' or "maybe stop flying the Confederate Flag everywhere", and some people start freaking out, even though they've all probably walked past that statue for the last twelve years and haven't even seen it. They have no idea who it represents, or why it's there. And when people point out that most of these statues were put up in the early 1900s as a display of white power and intimidation, then we get "but our history"!Yeah, except here's the thing. You're not sending school kids to the park to read the plaque that tells you all about Gen. Dickface. Partially that's because those plaques don't really tell you much, but mostly, it's because nobody gives a good gods damn about statues. I mean until you want to tear them down or replace them with something that's way more sensible and way less racist. Then suddenly, and all of a sudden, a chunk of the population pitches a fit, as though that statue is the thing that brought their entire town into existence and sustains it, and if you remove it, they'll all die or something. So I mean, sure, tearing down statues is technically property damage. But it's property damage I don't really care about, and neither does anybody else really. If they did, they would have cared about the property to begin with, and I've just clearly demonstrated that they in fact didn't care one little bit.So any violence resulting in death? Horrible. I condemn it outright. Things like burning police stations? I condemn it, but I kind of see where they're coming from too. Attacking and trying to overthrow the government? That's a big giant hell no. Destruction of statues? Don't care. I'd be fine if every statue disappeared from the face of the earth tomorrow, and so would everybody else. I mean except for the cool ancient ones, and maybe the Indian god statues and stuff like that. Those are cool, and they can stay. But J. Random idiot on a horse in a park? Racist or not, they could all go away and it wouldn't change our lives one tiny little bit. So I mean, I just try to look at stuff like that and see where people are coming fro

Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives?
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? To be fair, *some* of BLM does that stuff, same with the Trump protestors. But you've got to be careful with that too. Here we had, in the first day or two, a group break off from the majority of the protestors that caused a bunch of damage. They were denounced by the rest of the protestors and protestors would show up the next day to help clean up.We had protests for weeks and they were pretty much all peaceful, except for the incidents in the first couple of days. But our local news would lead ads mentioning protest coverage off with a cop car on fire. Again, that happened three weeks to a month before. It happened once. But for the news, that shit was forever.I think for me the big difference is this. Yes, rioting, indeed violence period, is IMO never the answer. But for BLM, here's the situation. They've been saying for years black people have been getting screwed over and killed by the police. Everybody mostly shrugged and went, "nah, the police are here to help"! Then we started seeing cellphone footage. Unarmed dudes getting shot in the back while running away, a guy informing the cops he had a legally permitted gun and getting killed, a 12 year old kid getting killed for having a toy gun like five seconds after the cops showed up, and so on. We're literally seeing people get murdered on national TV. And still, we, by which I mean white people, are still kind of like "yeah but that cop had a really hard day". I'm not saying I condone rioting, I'm just saying, I sort of understand being pissed off that now you have direct evidence, and you're still going "eh, whatevs".Contrast this with the idiots storming the capitol last week. They all think VP Pence should have done something he literally couldn't have done. If you don't know anything about QAnon, feel free to look into them, and good holy gods get ready to be shot in the face by a fire hose of batshit insanity. I mean some of them believe that VP Pence and Nancy Pelosi are dead, and any media appearances are deep fake CGI constructs. There's aliens involved somewhere. Cannibalism of babies. I mean, it's just complete and utter lunacy because it pretty much takes every conspiracy theory you've ever heard of and crams them into a big giant ball of dumbness. I mean it's just based on absolutely nothing whatsoever except the idiotic fever dreams these people are coming up with in their own heads.I said that they all believed Pence should have done something he literally couldn't do, in other words throw out the electors and send it back to the states to get new ones, because not everybody who stormed the capitol last week was QAnon. But there were a *lot* of Q people there. So for me, while I don't agree with the rioting, what I will say is that when you get angry, you sometimes do irrational things. The difference is that BLM has something to actually be angry about. The Q people, and the other assorted dumbasses who stormed the capitol last week, are literally angry about a bunch of completely made-up bullshit that's entirely divorced from anything remotely connected with reality. Also, BLM didn't try to take over the national government or threaten to murder the officials of said government. That doesn't make the violent stuff they did right. I'm just saying, it's kind of on a different level from what happened last week, which was the attempted subversion of our entire republic because some dipshits think that Nancy Pelosi kills babies for their brain chemicals so she can become or remain immortal, I'm honestly not clear on exactly what's supposed to be happening there. Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives?
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? 40: It's not contradictory at all. Look, if I want to say that all blind people should be aborted, I have the right to say that. The government can't stop me. That's freedom of speech.I don't, however, have a freedom to a platform. Speech is about what I can say. I can say that to you in my house, or your house until you kick me out. I have no right to essentially publish that opinion somewhere. I have no right to get that printed in a newspaper, on Twitter, Facebook, to say it on a radio or TV show, to get it printed on a jaunty coffee mug, none of that. If a newspaper will publish that opinion, then fine, it can be published. If whatever random internet company will churn out jaunty coffee mugs with that message, then great, I can get some coffee mugs with an incredibly dumb message on them.Speech literally means speech. I can say it to another person, or group of people, within earshot. If somebody decides to let me say it in another way, writing it in a newspaper, yelling it on the radio, fine. But I have no *right* to do that. Nobody is under any obligation to give me a radio show so I can yell about how if we don't all wear tinfoil hats, the aliens from Algol will read our minds and turn us all into communists. All of these things are essentially doing the same thing. They're extending the reach of your speech beyond its natural capabilities. You have no right whatsoever to that extension. You could gain it, because somebody could give it to you, or you could start your own newspaper or radio show, or print pamphlets or have a website or whatever. But assuming you're not doing it yourself, i.e. printing up your own Nazi literature, absolutely nobody is obligated to give you space to tell the public that you think Hitler was super special awesome and the second coming of Jesus, which some racists literally believe. These two things aren't contradictory at all, because they're literally two different things. The one I have a right to do, provided I'm not threatening people or yelling fire in a crowded theater or such, is to say things. Like literally, I have the right to open my mouth and make some noises, which hopefully convey some sort of thought. What I do *not* have a right to is for somebody to broadcast those noises around the world via radio waves or satellites, for example. That is why Alex Jones has the right to *say* that Senator Schumer yelled about "baby feast!", but *not* the right to spread it to other people, beyond those who can hear him yelling wherever he normally does his yelling when he's not on a radio station.Let me try one more example. Suppose you go to the grocery store. You're minding your business, doing your shopping, looking for some apples or chicken nuggets or laundry soap or whatever you're looking for in our hypothetical example. Suddenly, somebody gets in your face and starts yelling about how blind people are a stain on humanity and should be wiped off the face of the earth.1. Does he have a right to think and say that? Yes he does.2. Does he have the right to scream it into your face at a grocery store, probably making you and all of the other shoppers uncomfortable? No he does not. The grocery store owner/manager can quite happily remove him, and call the cops on him if he refuses to leave. You see what I mean here? Just because you have the right to say something, it doesn't mean you get to say it at any time and place and in whatever manner you choose. Again, the first amendment is about the government restricting your freedom of speech, not anybody else. The grocery store owner is under no obligation whatsoever to let you randomly yell at shoppers about the coming cucumber menace. However, if the grocery store owner wants to let somebody do that? Sure, they can do it no problem. I don't imagine it will improve their business, but there you go.Put simply, freedom of speech is your right to say things. It has nothing to do with assisting you in gaining a larger reach so the things you're saying will be heard by more people than those immediately surrounding you, nor does it mean you can say those things wherever and whenever and however loudly you want. Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives?
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? I mean, I feel like threatening to assassinate government officials and bomb Amazon is pretty dark. I've seen a bunch of the racism that got some of the other people banned. I've seen the QAnon dumbness about Satan worshiping cannibal baby-eating Democrats, which just sounds like the Satanic panic 2.0 if you ask me. I was around for the first one and that was super fucking dumb, check out the McMartin case if you don't know what I'm talking about, that should be a good entry point. I've seen some of the Gamergate stuff which yeah, was pretty dark. Honestly it's a wonder that these people have been around on publicly available platforms as long as they have. Here's the thing people don't get. People talk about free speech as though it's this absolute right to say whatever the hell you want. First of all, it's not, but we'll get to that in a minute. The other thing they think is that it means you have a right to say that wherever and whenever you want, because of the US Constitution. Sorry people from other countries, but this is a US issue so I'm assuming most of the people flipping their shit about it are living in the US.OK, so, let's tackle the first amendment. That's where freedom of speech lives. That amendment applies to one thing, and one thing only. That thing is the federal government of the United States. Not Twitter. Not Facebook. Not Amazon. Not Google. Not the internet. It applies to the federal government and it's ability to make laws, or not make laws in this case, because they can't take away your freedom of speech. Except sometimes they can. When they can is basically when you're trying to stir up violence, like, oh I dunno, let me see if I can think of some examples here, yelling about hanging the Vice President of the United States while you're rampaging through the capitol, talking about assassinating members of the government or bomb threats against Amazon on a thing that's hosted on Amazon's servers, just to pick a few totally random examples out of the air.Hell, I'm pretty against censorship. But let's look at somebody who got banned a while ago, Alex Jones. Thanks to Knowledge Fight I can hear his dumbness being mocked and proven wrong, as it should be. This is a quote I'm transcribing, and understand he's yelling a chunk of this, from his Jan. 7 show."Alright, Taylor Hanson was there I'm Alex Jones with Owen Shroyer, you were there when this poor lady Ashley Babbbitt got executed along with three other Americans they won't even tell us their names, they're calling us the terrorists but they were killing us, you were there, describe, you talked to her before she died, what happened what you witnessed, and I think you saw Chuckie Schumer, looked like it was his security detail that he was, I guess he wanted a blood sacrifice as we know, remember he threatened Trump he said (yelling) "if you ban abortion, we will annihilate you, you will pay", it was like, "these are *our* babies, baby feast"!That's some dude, on an actual radio show, claiming that a United States senator was yelling "baby feast". Should that get censored? Maybe not, but that's not even an opinion, that's just an outright lie. That's bullshit this dude is making up because he thinks Democrats harvest chemicals from children to keep them eternally young. I guess what I'm saying is this. I get the broader question of potential censorship, I really do. But given the people we're talking about, I think you should think very carefully about whether this instance is the one you want to pick as your hill to die on, as it were.I mean, there is just tons of this stuff out there. Racists referring to black people as "antique farm equipment". Incels praising people who went on shooting sprees and calling them saints, and seeing them as people to idolize and emulate. Can you blame companies if they don't want to give that kind of thing a platform? Keep in mind, as I've already covered above, these people have no right whatsoever to a platform. Re: Anybody use a tactile watch? I don't really care about the site layout. I could probably use it to buy one, and that's about all I worry about in a sight layout, can I use it?No on turning down the phone. I mean first of all I don't have a phone, though the iPod is similar enough I guess. But if I turn that down, then the alarm's going to be turned down as well, as far as I know. I'm not going to turn it down every time I want to check the time.If I don't decide to go for the Zalsach or whatever it is, I'll just snag a regular old braille watch. But I love metal and magnets and all that good stuff, so I was wondering if anybody had used a Bradley or one of the knockoffs, there seem to be a lot of them and they show up on sites specifically for the blind too. The other thing that tempts me is that seventy bucks isn't *too* horrible to be out, if it turns out it really doesn't work well for me for whatever reason. The braille pocket watch is about twenty bucks cheaper though. Anybody use a tactile watch? Specifically one of these things.https://zalsach.com/It's probably a ripoff of the Eone Bradley watch, but though that's cool and I'd happily support the original, I don't have $260 minimum lying around to buy one. I was going to get a braille pocket watch until I saw this. I want something to tell time that doesn't talk so I can check the time without potentially waking up my wife. Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? Chris wrote: "As far as I can gather, Trump wasn't inciting violence. He even posted a video telling everyone to go home peacefully, but of course the media doesn't want to put that out there in order to bolster their image that he's a monster and Joe Biden was fairly elected and nothing's wrong."Here's a chunk of what Trump said. "“It’s a very tough period of time,” he said. “But we can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace,” he said.“So go home. We love you. You’re very special. You’ve seen what happens, you see the way others are treated that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel. But go home, and go home in peace.”"So you know, after people stormed the United States Capitol with the intention of at least stopping the government from doing its business, after at least one cop and one protestor died, Yeah, Trump told them to go home. He also said he loves them, and he knows how they feel. Really? Also note why they have to go home, not because they were doing something bad, but because it *looks* bad, "we can't play into the hands of these people". Please note there, the issue wasn't the violence, the issue was that they're playing into the hands of other people. No, they were attacking the capitol with the intent to disrupt the government. Some of them were armed with guns and bombs and zip tie cuffs. Some of them were heard yelling "hang Pence". But hey they're special people and Trump knows how they feel. Yes, he told them to go home, he said that. But let's talk about the entire message, shall we? Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives?
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? Oh yeah. I mean Trump tweeted and the media covered it, no matter what it was. Some of that's understandable, e.g. when he basically banned trans people from the military via Twitter, which was not only the first time we found out about it, but the first time the military found out about it. Whatever you think of that decision, that's a piss poor way to implement policy. You'd think the first thing you'd do is consult with your military first, or at least, let them know so they can figure out how to implement the policy. But yeah, there was a ton of stuff the media didn't need to cover at all that got covered anyway. Hell when he was campaigning I specifically remember a TV station here in the US switching from a candidate's speech to the stage where Trump was going to appear like an hour later because somebody was setting up a podium. And I don't mean they switched pictures, I mean the audio was also somebody setting up a podium on an otherwise completely empty stage. So sure, the media's got some blame to shoulder too, no doubt. Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? Oh I forgot to write something. For the crazy code stuff, see number 3 in the article I posted. But basically James Comey participated in a "my first five jobs" Twitter thing, QAnon idiots googled those letters and came across a foundation for an obscure elementary school, and the school got a ton of emails about how they were going to be bombed/attacked by Comey. So the school cancelled a bake sale, lest Q crazies showed up and endangered everybody. Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives?
Re: I have a big problem with Twitter. Any alternatives? Just FYI, and I mean that literally, I'm just trying to provide information here, this is what I've heard about Trump getting banned, and why those last two tweets might be a problem. There's been talk among the kind of loonies who stormed the capitol about doing it again, either on Jan. 20, the inauguration, or I think Jan. 17. So for the second one where Trump says he won't be at the inauguration, this can be seen, and keep in mind these guys do this shit all the time, as a signal to go ahead, because Trump won't be there and won't be in danger. As for the first one, that's riling people up more.Whether you agree with that or not, that's the connection to violence. And as for these people taking the weirdest things as signals?https://www.cracked.com/article_26870_6 … fects.htmlThe point is, yeah, Trump's tweets aren't a direct call for violence or anything like that. But we've seen how this stuff gets interpreted by lunatic weirdos and what happens when they act on those interpretations last Wednesday. Far from doing anything to remove those potential interpretations, and understand that might not be possible to do but I think it's worth trying, Trump just offered stuff that looks a lot like "hey you guys got a raw deal on Wednesday, that's not fair"!Again, I'm not necessarily arguing that banning Trump was the right thing to do, although honestly I'm kind of hard-pressed to see what else should have happened. Trump had years to stop himself from saying things like "we love you, your special people", and clearly he can't manage to do that. But anyway, whether you agree with the ban or not, this was the reasoning. These people are literally taking Trump's tweets and seeing as the go signal. Normally I'd say you're not to blame for how other people interpret your words. But given Trump's abysmal response to Wednesday? Sorry, he loses the benefit of the doubt. I mean, he should have lost it a long time ago, but I think we've passed the point where any reasonable person should give it to him.My point is, I can see the opposition to banning people, and normally I'm all for free speech. I'll even go a bit further and say that, while I understand why places like Youtube took down his Wed. response, I think it should be available so you don't have to rely on other people, or newspapers and so on, to know what his words were, you can go find out how dumb they were for your own self. Obviously this is the part where I've stopped just giving information. You don't respond to insurrectionist terrorists by saying they're special people and you love them. That's utterly ridiculous. So I mean, yeah I see the opposition to banning and all, but considering that absolutely nobody else is doing anything whatsoever to stop stuff like this? I say good job Twitter, Facebook Et Al., but too little too late if you ask me. Re: recommand me some of those
Re: recommand me some of those It's not so much the melody, though I realize I made it sound like it was. I mean, I listen to stuff like this.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpZqFa0Qiro So I mean, I'm all about the journey sometimes. It's more the jumpiness. It lacks, flow I guess would be the best way to describe it. It's just A then B then C and D, and those things are totally unrelated and disconnected from each other. Plus a lot of times they're really short segments. So I'm just coming to grips with a thing, going oh that's kind of neat, and then it's doing something completely and utterly different all of a sudden. It makes things feel really unstructured, like instead of forming some kind of whole, however asymmetric it might be, so to speak, it's like a toddler showing you their favorite toys. They whip one thing out of the toy box, show it to you for half a second, throw it on the floor, and go get another one, and then another one and another one and another one. Some of those things might be related, maybe some of the figures and the cars are part of a town play set, but since we're just jumping from thing to thing to thing, it's really hard to figure out what's going on, if anything is. And I mean, again, I listen to all sorts of stuff that's about the journey. Even really disconnected stuff, like this.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3hH7byeAM4Now the whole point of this music is for meditation, and you're supposed to listen to each sound, and not worry about what comes next. It's not really supposed to be melodic, in a Western sense. But I still feel like it has more structure, maybe because each sound is delineated by silence. So it feels like it's supposed to be somewhat separate, but it still feels like there's a connection for me, that I don't get from a lot of classical stuff. Re: recommand me some of those
Re: recommand me some of those I find most classical music way too hyperactive. As somebody whom I can't remember put it, classical music is where you listen in expectation that a tune will break out. A lot of it just feels to me like the composer is thinking, "OMG I had a coherent little melody going for five seconds, time to change lest everybody get bored"! As an example, I really like the clarinet in this, but you only have to listen to the first minute or so to hear it jump around all over the damn place. Here's a post I made on Facebook about it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN8O_LIpSlwOK, so we have this intro or prelude or whatever fancy term from the strings. Then the clarinet starts up. Ooo, we've got a little tune kind of thing! Then the strings do this "dum dum dum" thing. Then the clarinet starts doing something else. Then it starts doing something else faster. That's in like the first minute or less and I feel like I should bust out a stopwatch and time the sections, because they feel like they last all of five seconds.Seriously, were these people all high on meth or something? This is what it feels like to me, translated into conversation. "Oh yeah, we met at college last week right? (SQUIRREL!) No, that's a terrible vintage of wine, you really want (SQUIRREL!) Have you heard about the Lord Jesus? (SQUIRREL!) What? I can't hear you, that jackhammer is really loud! (SQUIRREL!) No I don't think stock options are a good idea because (SQUIRREL!) OK, look at the diagram, that's a bisected angle right? (SQUIRREL!) Starfish are really creepy ..."You get the idea. I'm sorry, I'm listening to this, and it's good clarinet, and it's doing some things I like, but I'm just going, holy hell could you settle down for two minutes and actually *develop* something? Or at least let us get comfortable and settle into a thing and enjoy it a bit before you go tearing off and doing something completely and utterly different? It's slightly cheaper than the Anker, which is what I was considering, though Anker also has a cheaper speaker that's probably the same sort of idea. I know Anker's supposed to be really good electronics, assuming they're the same people who do the power adapters and stuff. The 360 degree sound is interesting, assuming it actually works, then you don't have to worry about orientation. Re: How to read books on my Braille display in today's age
Re: How to read books on my Braille display in today's age I'm part of the older generation and I've pretty much given up on braille. Understand, I'd love to get back into it. But I have so much more access to stuff with a computer that it's not even funny. Even music, I took a braille music course, I was thinking about taking the next one, but then they discontinued it. Getting braille music produced is super expensive, money I absolutely don't have. Now we have MuseScore and we can read and input our own music. I need to buckle down and start seriously learning it, but I don't see a reason why it shouldn't work. So let's say I get a book. I can scan the book for text, and even if I have to pay somebody to enter the examples into MuseScore for me, it's probably going to be cheaper than getting the book produced in braille. I realize that's a pretty specific example. But even with literary stuff, I've thought about buying some braille books. I can even get one of my favorites, LOTR. But in order to get all of it, it's like $500 plus. So I mean, I could do that, or I could spend that money on something like the Orbit 20, which would give me more access to more stuff. But remember that's a pretty recent thing. And there are drawbacks, e.g. you lose page formatting which can be significant, e.g. for stuff like poetry or recipes. For example, check out this poem, line by line.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L(aI don't know that we'd get all of that, e.g. that it represents the shape of the number one sort of, but I read that or something similar in braille and it was pretty cool, because the words go down the page, the falling is represented by that you see. So then if we want pages, we're back to books or the Canute, which last time I checked was a couple of thousand dollars. I guess my point is, like I said I'd love to get a braille display and get back into it. But then I think, well let's see here, I could save up and get a braille display, or I could save up and get an instrument or possibly an entirely new computer. It's kind of hard to justify it to myself, even now with the cheaper displays. And I mean, I've also been kicking around the idea that being able to type in grade II braille might reduce typos in longer stuff that I'm typing, I tried with that input addon for NVDA but it seemed to have issues entering some stuff. So I mean I see a lot of good uses for a display, especially if it has a keyboard which means I can control NVDA right from it and don't have to switch back and forth, and still ... kind of hard to justify. Playing music on Bandcamp with NVDA, anybody know how to do it? Man I am full of questions today.I swear I've asked this before, but it may have been somewhere else, and I still don't have a solution. Anybody know how to play sample tracks on Bandcamp with NVDA?The last decent info I had claimed that there was a blank space below the play button, and hitting enter on that would play. That worked, where it showed up, but there were a lot of things it didn't show up for, and now I don't think I see it anywhere. Oh this is NVDA with Firefox, though I doubt the browser should matter. I just tried with Edge and Narrator for the fun of it, and it didn't seem to want to activate any play buttons either.I just tried Chrome for the hell of it and it doesn't play anything either, unless I'm doing something wrong. I'm trying all of the usual tricks, space bar on the button, enter on the button, NVDA-numpad slash on the button and then numpad slash once and twice quickly, i.e. single and double clicking. Routing and clicking used to work but it hasn't for a while now. This is driving me nuts. If anybody knows the magical secret, please share it. I'd really appreciate it. Can anybody recommend a speaker?
Can anybody recommend a speaker? Yo peeps, happy 2021 and all.I was thinking of getting a speaker, specifically one of those Creative sound bars. But one of the things I want to do with it is plug into the Victor Stream, because it's internal speaker kind of sucks and I also think it uses up more battery than just having something plugged into the headphone jack. So I'm wondering if the Creative would be a little big.Anybody got any decent speaker recommendations for something like that? It would have to be able to connect via cable, obviously, since the Stream doesn't have bluetooth. But other than that, well, I was wondering if there might be something about the size of the Stream that would put out some decent sound with a bit of bass. It would have to have some decent volume too since part of the reason I want to do this is so I can hear the stream in noisier environments where I can't use headphones. For example, some books and radio stations are quiet enough, even with the internal speaker all the way up, that I can't hear them over shaving with an electric razor. Well I can hear them, just not particularly clearly. I honestly do not understand the obsession of a chunk of the blind community for cranking their speech up as fast as possible. You get the same effect you get turning up the speed on audio books or Youtube, everything gets really choppy, and that's with every synth I've ever heard. I have no idea why you'd want to hear that constantly, but hey it works for people, so there you go. But it just baffles me. I'll grant that Eloquence seems to be the best synth at not making things as choppy as they might be, but you can't really avoid the basic issue, it's just the nature of speeding up speech, that's just what happens to it. Re: Getting started in the native instruments universe
Re: Getting started in the native instruments universe You probably have Komplete Start already. It's just the set of instruments and such you can get for free. It doesn't install a thing called Komplete Start. It comes with a library in the sense that entering your serial number gets you access to install stuff from Native. It's just Komplete Start which you can also install without the keyboard. Other than that, it's a midi controller. As somebody's already pointed out, the big thing you get is Native instruments accessibility. That means you get to know what patches you're loading, and you can change settings on the patches with the knobs, get access to things like scale and arp, stuff like that. Also, Native is giving away a free instrument until some time in January, so if you don't have this one yet, it's worth grabbing.https://www.native-instruments.com/en/s … s-with-us/ URL: https://forum.audiogames.net/post/601986/#p601986 -- Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Re: what uis n?eoludism?
Re: what uis n?eoludism? To be fair, philosophical pessimism isn't really about expecting the worst. To take the Stoics, for example, assuming we can consider them to be philosophical pessimists which I'm uncertain about, they say things to the effect that if your spouse dies, you shouldn't get all freaked out, because you knew it was going to happen and they were in essence lent to you by the gods, and now they're being taken back. I forget if that's in Marcus Aurelius or somebody else at the moment.I agree with Thomas Ligotti, who wrote a book about it. Philosophical pessimism or philosophical optimism are based in temperament, it's not a thing you argue for, you either have it or you don't, and the majority of people probably don't, have pessimism that is. So when I say it doesn't make sense to me, I don't mean that it's illogical, or a bad thing to believe, or anything like that. I mean when you start talking about, for example, consciousness as being a fundamental issue because it makes us want meaning, which we can never have, I don't understand that because I just don't have that feeling. I don't have a pessimistic temperament, philosophically speaking.Though I don't agree with philosophical pessimists that pretty much everything you can think of is a distraction from this problem of meaning and/or death, I do agree with them that there's often a lot of stuff we overlook. As an example, if you've never met a futurist, count yourself lucky. I knew one a while back who was super into Second Life. OMG they're doing concerts and teaching university classes in it and OMG OMG OMG it's amazing and it's the future of everything! Not only did that not happen, there was no pause whatsoever to think about what would happen if something like Second Life became the future of everything. It was just totally awesome, end of story. So to tie this back into the topic of neo-Luddism, while I don't think we need to be completely against technology and return to rural living, I absolutely think that we need to think about technology's potential downsides a lot more than we tend to do in practice. So I mean, I'm not trying to pick on philosophical pessimism here and say that it's dumb or has nothing to contribute or anything like that. I'm just not a philosophical pessimist, and I tend to think it goes to extremes, e.g. neo-Luddism. I'm generally against philosophical and ideological extremes, because I tend to find they're a distortion of the issues. A philosophy, for instance, that assumes that everything is unmitigated happiness seems just as wrong to me as a philosophy that assumes everything is an unmitigated horror show. Re: what uis n?eoludism?
Re: what uis n?eoludism? "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." H. P. Lovecraft, "The Call of Cthulhu" Basically, replace science with relativism, and this is what he's trying to say. It doesn't make a lot of sense because he's a philosophical pessimist, and unless you accept philosophical pessimism, they tend not to make a lot of sense. But I'll try and explain it anyway. It sort of goes like this.1. Right now, the world's a relativist.2. But you can't maintain relativism for ever.3. The opposite of relativism is absolutism.4. Therefore, the world will eventually seek another form of absolutism.5. But that's the opposite of relativism, so the world will contradict itself. The underlying assumption that sort of makes it make sense is the philosophical pessimism. That's why it's not just the world changing its mind or just a natural cycle between more absolutism vs. more relativism. Philosophical pessimists tend to think in universals, and the universals are always horrible anyway. So even though there's no real reason to choose relativism over absolutism, because everything sucks so one's no better than the other, they tend to pick something and then say the other thing is bad. That's until the other thing happens, then it's good and the previous thing is bad.The basic thrust of philosophical pessimism is that consciousness, because of meaning, is a problem. Well, and suffering. Buddhism deals this one way, philosophical pessimism just assumes that if there's suffering and a quest for meaning you'll probably never solve, existence itself is a problem. That's why it can talk about contradictions being a problem and why A is good now and B is bad because it contradicts A, but then when B comes, A is bad because it contradicts B.Essentially, the contradictions, even if they're held by totally different groups of people, are one of the reasons philosophical pessimists believe we can't find meaning, because again, for them everything is in universals, so "meaning" isn't something I can find and you can find and somebody else can find in various things or ideologies, but *a thing* that we all either find or don't. For the pessimist, we don't, and that quest causes us pain, along with lots of other stuff. Personally I don't get philosophical pessimism at all, it seems ridiculous to me. That's partly because I disagree with it's basic ideas, we can find meaning, and partly because it overemphasizes stuff, if I'm playing a game, there doesn't need to be meaning in it beyond, I'm playing a game because I enjoy it. It's no great mystery in need of a solution, or a distraction from the sufferings of life, or whatever. But our boy Wing is a philosophical pessimist, so all of this stuff is a problem for him. It's not for me because I like to keep things simple. Today we walked down to the Indian place an got Indian food for lunch because my wife decided she wanted samosas. Simple. No great mystery, no big rigmarole about suffering, we decided Indian food would be yummy, so we went and got some, brought it home, and ate it. In case anybody was wondering, yes, it was really yummy. So was the beer I had with it that had cardamom and ginger and stuff in it.I'm not trying to suggest that there's no deeper meaning to stuff or anything. I'm not suggesting that people don't have questions, or shouldn't. I just don't agree with philosophical pessimism, you can include existentialism here too I think, that the fact that we exist poses some kind of fundamental issue. But then, I pretty much side with Shinto. The gods/spirits/powers gave us the world, and it's pretty awesome. We should thank them for it. Re: Das professional 4 keyboard: opinions?
Re: Das professional 4 keyboard: opinions? Just so you know, you'll also want to look into things like taking breaks and stuff. If you're typing that much, no keyboard is going to stop your hands from hurting. And if you've got that stuff going on, you want to seriously look into how to prevent RSI, repetitive stress injuries. Because once they get started, they pretty much don't stop. You want to minimize them as much as possible, because they just keep getting worse.Strengthening exercises can help but really, if your hands are hurting or such, you probably want to go and see a physical therapist or occupational therapist and get tips and/or exercises, because there are all kinds of exercises you can do to address different things. Basically what I'm trying to tell you is it's good that you're looking for a better keyboard, they can help yes, but if you've got that stuff going on, don't wait around. Start taking it as seriously as you can right now, so it doesn't get worse. I am telling you from experience, it really sucks.
