Re: Any data hoarders on here?

I did buy Rakim's book on Audible because it wasn't on CD. Have a feeling that's not going to play now. 50 Cent's new book, which is really good BTW, anyone could learn something from it, I bought on CD. $26 and that shit comes on 7 disks. They're not ID tagged though unfortunately so I just have a bunch of folders of flac files.Oh yeah I'm a pretty big Hip-Hop head. lol

Re: Any data hoarders on here?

Thanks for the info guys.I agree with the streaming subscriptions for what it's worth. I had the whole audiobook vanishing from my library thing, and Amazon were a pain in the arse to deal with.I know I should care more about this stuff, but I just don't have the inclination to get worked up. Good job too, looking at some of them prices!! I spend enough on weird food and guitar strings.

Re: Any data hoarders on here?

@23 I don't use Synology Drive TBH. I set up an encrypted FTP server to which people can get access, and if they want a file or more from me, I can either give them access to the corresponding folder or copy the file into their home directory.I thus don't know how accessible it is. I also don't want to blow a link out there and see dozens of people download stuff from my NAS when I cannot control it, since that will always use my private internet connection speed, I usually use Dropbox (or Cubbit in my case) for that.

@21 do you have any strategies for using Synology's DSM interface? I have a minature version of your setup with a DS918+ with 4 x 4tb IronWolf drives in SHR 2 (raid 6) for 2-drive redundancy so that leaves me with 8TB of useable capacity.I find it extremely aggrovating just to do basic tasks like sharing a link using the drive app in a web browser because of how inaccessible that is.

@Hijacker, ah ok.@chrisnorman7 to add on to what I've already said, the subscription services aren't my kind of thing, not only does audible books have drm, which you can remove with software, meaning you can't play your book on most every day media players, and I use other sites to get my audio described content in mp3 format which is much better for me than a netflix subscription.

Well, th"ere's about 2 TB of audio books and another TB of audio dramas, alot of music, series in audio only and video, sound effects, vst plugins and instruments, royalty-free music, ebooks and such. But the main part is my collection of uncompressed blu-ray and UHD blu-ray discs, which contains about 460 discs and is about 18 TB in size right now, growing almost daily.Since I want to watch them together with my girlfriend and we also want to watch extras, audio commentary and all that kind of nice stuff, I won't rip them to free up the space, but keep them as unmodified as possible. That eats up alot of space.

Re: Any data hoarders on here?

OK, so i'm currently running a Synology DS918+ with all 4 slots filled with 8 TB drives + a DX517 with another 2 8 TB drives (yet) in a RAID 5, making a total of 6 x 8 TB - 8 TB = 40 TB of space and 1 drive redundancy. As you can probably imagine, backing that up is a rather expensive task. Services like Backplaze are out of the question due to being too expensive. The most important data get mirrored to my parent's NAS regularly and all the less important stuff gets backed up weekly on external drives which aren't physically apart from each other, but are offline when not in use due to USB-controlled power sockets. Then again, i've got several users on my NAS who can grab all the data they want, so most of my stuff probably is already mirrored somewhere among them.As they said 20 years ago, if you want a reliable backup, just create an FTP server and the web will do that for you, for free.Best Regards.Hijacker

Re: Any data hoarders on here?

Yeah, for all intents and purposes, I'm not using a Raid array for backup, I'm using it for archival purposes. So it shouldn't be an issue. Even if it is attached to hte network, I only need one drive to back it up, say once a month, and it would be an offline drive.Only things I would backup is maybe my windows instalation in case my SSD shits the bed. Everything that's important is either on Mega, or on a separate drive inside my computer.

Re: Any data hoarders on here?

Here are my thoughts:1. Any hard drive, of any brand, any model, any production line, can and will eventually fail unless you stop using it first. Any drive, again of any brand, model, etc. can fail with absolutely no warning, taking all your data with it. I suspect people telling stories about never buying XYZ brand again are because they've had bad experiences with it, or know someone who has. Personally I've used both Western Digital and Seagate with no problems.\2. Backup, backup, backup! For data you truly care about, I'd recommend having at least three copies, at least one of which is at an off-site location. If you add online backup such as Backblaze to the mix, that's even better. By the same token:3. RAID is not a backup! RAID is not a backup! RAID is not a backup! True, a RAID can help in situations where one drive fails. However, since everything is mirrored, if a nasty virus or trojan hits or you accidentally delete something, RAID won't help at all. Also, if the array is damaged or destroyed by flood, fire, theft, etc. your data's still just as gone as it would have been on a single drive.

Anything cheap tends to be pretty shite in my experience, and people think that it reflects on all the products as a whole.Granted there is also high priced low functioning garbage also. But a $200 laptop is probably a piece of shit potato, with few exceptions.I had a toshiba laptop that I used to do all my old recordings on, and you can actually hear fan noise in the vocals when they're soloed because they would wind up like crazy under load. It ran horrible on Windows 8.1.

Re: Any data hoarders on here?

You need a RAID array so there's parody if one of the drives fail. Also I would highly not recommend Seagate, as they fail often and when they do, it's usually in a catastrophic way. Some data recovery experts refuse to work on them, and I saw a video once where they had a drive on the bench and the head crashed and turned into powder.

Any data hoarders on here?

So as of now I store all my data on one Seagate backup plus 4 tb hub, since late 2017. Probably horrible to most of you techies here, and I understand why, if that drive goes belly up, bye bye all my data.I've been thinking about trying to archive YouTube channels and for that I'm going to need a huge amount of space, plus redundancy, because I'll also be storing the data I have currently, which is a little over 2 tb. I still live with my parents so I doubt they'd let me set up a NAS, even though its probably the best option. USB enclosures seem to not be favored for the most part when dealing with stuff like this. Its also going to be very expensive no matter how I slice it, 10 tb drives look to be at least $300.What setups do you guys use?
