Re: How can blind people shop online

This is in reply to post 9. I haven't had the chance to try the Boxed app yet. I don't typically shop online via my phone, and, to be quite honest, I'm not really sure why I've not tried it before. Let me try the app and I can post what I find here. Look for some information to come from me regarding this sometime over the next couple days or so.

@4 have you tried the boxed app? I downloaded it to my iPhone to see how it was and I can't get in to the email field to type. I see the fields just can't get in them.

Re: How can blind people shop online

That said: there are degrees, if it's half off online and the shop won't price match or work with you, that's a different story, whatever.  But I do feel it's worth pointing out the commission thing because honestly very few people realize that that's even going on.

Re: How can blind people shop online

@6Yes, but there's also questions of degree.  If you're going to take half an hour of someone's time and they're working on commission, they could have been selling to someone else who's going to actually buy it from them.  You tip your waitress or pizza delivery person or whatever--it's the same sort of thing.  It's not failing to benefit the store, it's being a dick to the person in front of you right now who is getting paid as little as possible unless they sell stuff to you.  I don't care about the shop, and I'd much rather live in a world where sales associates made a living wage, and perhaps you don't make enough money or you don't want to be bothered coming back to ask about a price match or something like that, but the cost is that those people have to take shit from whoever because the only way they have to make money and keep their jobs is to get the sales, and by get the sales I mean literally walk with you and check you out get the sales, not you buy it next week get the sales (though, if you remember their name, you can often ask for them when you come back).  When you walk in without the intention of buying but with the intention of making them help you, you should at least feel bad about it.Now obviously your local grocery store isn't commission, but on the whole it's worth finding out for other stuff and deciding if you really want to be that guy, and often they're only allowed to tell you they're working on commission without getting in trouble if you ask first.  The shop, especially the big chains, are making tons of money, but via screwing over the people who work there.

Re: How can blind people shop online

rofl seriously!  NO matter how you do it you're going to end up stepping on someone's toes!  It's no worse than buying something and then selling it to someone else at a higher price than they could get it for themselves, and I happen to know there's at least one person on this forum who does that...Fact of the matter is that when you shop you're not going to wonder how on earth you can benefit the store. You're shopping to hopefully get the best deal, so of course if you can find it online at a cheaper price you're not going to ask yourself, gee, can I benefit the guy at the local market by spending 15 dollars more?  It's not like you're going to a restaurant and not tipping the weighter for their work, or the uber driver for driving out in the rain and snow and scorching sun, or the pizza delivery guy who just decided he was going to go above and beyond the call of duty and bring your pizza and drinks and dessert in and set it on the counter for you when he could have just as easily told you to come out and collect it at his car!

Re: How can blind people shop online

Before doing what @3 suggests, keep in mind that many sales associates work on commission and that taking up their time and then going home to buy it online can actually be kinda shitty because you just took money out of their pocket.Groceries, etc, online aren't a problem. Furniture, etc, I always just do in person.

Re: How can blind people shop online

I've been shopping online for several years now, and haven't had any problems as of yet. I usually shop on Amazon, Ebay, Boxed, Jet, and a few others. These are all very useful sites, and all very safe. I have also found no accessibility issues with any of them. If you have any questions about any of these that I mentioned, please reach out to me and I'll be glad to help. One of my go-to sites right now is Boxed. You can buy all kinds of different things, primarily groceries and things of that sort, in bulk without paying the usual membership fee. In fact, I just put in an order there for some things. They usually deliver pretty quickly too, so that's a huge plus.Jet is actually affiliated with Walmart, and some things you can buy on that site will come in bulk. However, you can get way more than just groceries and the like there. I've seen where you can buy electronics of all types, and all the other types of things you'd expect to find in a store like Walmart. Again, this is a very, accessible site. I haven't ordered from them for some time now, but I intend to in the near future I hope.

Re: How can blind people shop online

My wife and I do ebay and craigslist all the time.  Even when you're sighted you don't always have garantees of receiving the product you actually thought you were going to.  That doesn't mean shop without common sense though, so @2 is actually correct on this one.  If you can have someone sighted lookinat the items you're interested in you have a good start. As far as other things like Walmart and such are concerned, our method is pretty simple; we may go find the item at a local store to see if we can look at it beforehand but actually purchase it online if we end up liking it.  Another thing is either reading posts with ratings or watching youtube vids on a particular product if you can find any.

Re: How can blind people shop online

Their aren't any guides that I know of. For me, I just go by the reviews and if it has 4 stars and up. Also look at the product description and if possible see if their is anyone that can describe to you the picture of what your buying.

How can blind people shop online

Is there any guides for safe online shopping? For example, EBay and other sites like this. I would love to hear if this is possible for us?
