Re: Monthly chat June 2015

@Blindncool, the books are rather fun. Its odd Im not the biggest fan of detective fiction, but I enjoy the Sherlock books, then again Conan Doyle was always said to be as good at his characters and settings as much as at the puzzle elements. If you can find them, I can highly recommend the Bbc radio plays, sinse back in the nineties the Bbc had a project of dramatizing all 63 Holmes stories plus all four novels with the same actors for Holmes and Wotson, which in fact they did.Theyre both very accurate representations of the books and also extremely well done, albeit the actors for both Lestrange and Mrs. Hudson did change rather (Mrs. hudsan was played by Judy Dench in some stories). Their Valley of fear is particularly one of my favourites. As for me, well again more by way of reviews and blogs and game testing, albeit its been hot as hell round here today so Ive not exactly felt energetic. Well I listened to the monthly
story for this month which concluded the locom doctors format. It was actually a rather nice one, not exceptional but particularly good especially sinse it was set in sixth century constantinople and featured the roman emperor Justinian. it also had a bit more historical gravitas, sinse there was even a scene where the emperor assumed that Vicky was being given to him as a present which was played as silly but probably quite historically real, plus it saw the return of the meddling monk seaking his revenge for what happened with the 8th Doctor at the end of the new adventures which was fantastic. the end was a bit abrupt, and I was actually rather sorry when the alien monsters turned up in this one sinse I was hoping for a pure historical and in at least the first two episodes that was what I got.Next months story Im looking forward to just on the basis of one line, a dalek saying Would, You, Like, Some, volovontts! . Buffy continues to be fun, and series three is picking up for all I miss spike. there was an episode where Angel supposedly became evil again, but really! cant we just have him back that way? I much preferd evil snarky angel to the usual anxty tragic love version .The Mayor however who is the bad guy for this series is finally showing his hand and I will admit he has his moments, its great to see such a slimy politician sort of like watching evil Bill Clinton . My favourite mayor line which made me laugh hugely was after one of his schemes fails where he says in a quite jovial tone Oh dont worry, theres more than one way to skin a cat, which is somet
hing I can verrify factually! And it just leaves it to your imagination why exactly the mayor could know so much about skinning cats .Other than that not much to report, its a rather slow time of year.

@Afrim be careful, I always have a habbit of over exercising myself especially when i start up after a break and I actually have to ration myself or otherwise Ill end up in a position where I cant exercise for several days, sometimes you have to go through pain, other times pain is your bodys way of telling you there is something wrong and you really need to listen, fortunately having a mum who is a physio helps.@Aaron, the jedi robes came with a very cool light saber that made lots of noise and glowed different colours every time you waved it, however it was waaay too noisy for a concert. I took an old one my brother had which was less good on the noise and balance but looked more realistic when turned off, but I have no idea which makes either were. If I was to get myself one I dont know which, Id probably spend time looking around but obviously this was for a specific purpose. The film wasnt actually a new sherlock holmes film li
ke the one a few years ago (which was rather too overthetop action for me to really take seriously). It was called Mr. Holmes, see The fount of all wisdom and starred Ian Mckellan as a 93 year old Holmes in the year 1947. My dad really wanted to see it, so we popped along this afternoon. Mckellan was really fantastic playing an older Holmes, and the relationship he has with the son of his house keeper was lovely to see. My only problem is some of the plot felt a little thin and tacked on, not really explored correctly, (I spotted one of the twists a mile off and yet a big thing was made of the fact Holmes didnt). Also as a major fan of the Holmes books at least i have to question a good few chronological issues, for example the film talked a lot about Holmes last case before he retired, and yet Holmes actually retired in 1904 after the case the retired colourman basically because he realized
himself he was slipping up and also because the world was changing.I also didnt like the idea that Holmes fell out with Wotson, oh and btw, a point in the film was that the house keepers son was going to get a job as a boot black, but child labour went out in the twenties, as did domestic service as a life style rather than a profession, so a wee bit inaccurate there. On the plus side, Mckellan was down right amazing, the film really hit the points emotionally, I particularly loved the way that though the film made it clear holmes was definitely not at his best, once he had any puzzle to solve or any deduction to do he just clicked instantly back into place, (I was waiting for the horrible moment when his mind failed him but it thankfully never came). Really nice to see a film that had zero big action sequences for once and concentrated entirely on characters and making its artistic point as well. Not that I have anything against big
action sequences at all, (hell one reason I loved singing Duel of the fates was the awesome darth mawl fight), , but when theyre basically two thirds of the film and they dont really have a point in the story accept to show off special effects I do tend to feel things have gone rather flat. So, good to see something that went against that. Probably not everyones cup of tea for a film, particularly sinse it was pretty dam grim in parts, but nice to see none the less.

Hi all,I jumped in this topic in the very first days of the month, and I may do it again, if you do not consider a problem. Well, I have just started the summer holidays which will last till the beginning of October, when I will go to university. A new school, a new experience, new people, new things to learn.Im currently spending my time at home, reading anything, talking with any friend, or watching any documentary. Im also doing some gym exercises so as to lose some weight. After all, it makes you feel good. My muscles hurt and I was forced to stop exercising for three days because I was feeling a lot of pain. Its in progress though now at the time of speaking. Having a good body is never bad, but it needs a lot of work. They say, No pain, no gain

@Bcs, funny to think of it being winter and actually cold somewhere, sinse up here its the opposite, although its more frequently warm and very rainy than sunny.@JCion, I definitely appreciate the bit about moving, not fun it is, moving into my flat was pretty dire, and bits of the decorating only got done later.@Tom, sorry to hear about the various health matters and your trip to casualty. Ive avoided such ever sinse my near broken elbow in 2012, though given that there has been major upheavels in the news recently with people having ridiculously long waits in AE thats probably a good thing. I have been wondering where you were (I definitely expected a reply from you in my startrek races topic). As for me, nothing planned today immediately other than looking through my parts for tomorrows performance. The only annoying part is Ill need to keep the light saber turned off during the singing sinse I dont want people
put off by the hum. I did consider buying a none humming one but theyre surprisingly expensive, particularly for a one off. I am currently waiting for the update of battle arena on the Iphone, which sounds great, that and reading the second coldfire book which is proving rather better than the first one.It actually has a really unique take on religion which is that given a world in the distant future which has energy fields that cause peoples unconscious desires to manifest as literal demons, and a force that can reshape nature over time, someone has the idea of introducing a very monotheistic church (patterned on the christian church), on the basis that an omniscient God is too powerful to be created out of peoples actual desires, but peoples combined belief and faith in a better world will act as a stablizing force and both help to remove some of the darker aspects of said energy, and also let the church reintroduce science and technology, which has
a nasty habbit of going wrong on a world where anyones unconscious thoughts could be effecting complex mechanisms and causing them to fail. Its unclear as to whether god (the universal God),exists or not and leaves the question open, but I thought the ideas surrounding belief in itself as a counter to negativity was a rather interesting one, particularly considering how too often in scientce fiction its always science good, religion bad which frankly Im rather board of.Its also far better written than the first, which is good sinse the first book dipped way too close to romance fiction for my liking in several places, the second has its issues but I do like the concepts involved, particularly the way that it manages (like Robbert Silverbergs majipoor), to actually create a science fiction world of a distant earth colony, yet also has a reason for various fantasy tropes like monsters, warrior priests and so
rcerers. I will say in terms of tv series, game of thrones is one of the best adaptations Ive seen (martin himself writes one episode of each series and also has communicated with the producers). If your not a big reader I can see why the books would be daunting, though myself sinse my priority goes oxygen, reading! I really enjoyed them and cant wait for Winds of winter.

Hi all, So, I guess I must be the only one here who ended up watching the game of Thrones TV series before attempting to read the corresponding song of Ice and Fire? Thus, I found it very difficult to get into the books, and not sure if Im ever going to finish them. About a week ago, I finished the first semester of my 4th, and final, year of studying for my current degree. The fact that Im graduating in about 5 months is a rather scary thought; it feels like yesterday that I actually posted on some topic here about going into first year. It is Winter in this part of the world. Though probably not as cold as in places in Europe and the US, this still feels slightly chillier than the last 2 winters. I doubt itll ever snow in the city where I live, but it might do so elsewhere in the country. Now that I am on holiday, Im just relaxing as much as possible, socialising with friends and looking for some new games. A friend and
I played Lords and Knights for a rather long time, though that all came to a rather sad ending when, during a war with another alliance, we were defeated. I guess I understand some peoples frustrations with these kind of PVP-type games.

Re: Monthly chat June 2015

Well, as for myself one reason I have not been too active on the forum of late as well as add to this thread is the month of June has been extremely busy for me personally. It seems like I have been on the go non-stop and there is no end in sight. To begin with I have been trying to spend as much time with my son as possible. For the last couple of weekends we have been hanging out playing games on his Playstation such as Guitar Hero, Nascar Thunder, and several others. We also have been watching the classic Super Friends cartoons from the 70s and 80s. Last weekend, which was Fathers Day, we went out shopping, ate lunch at Hardees, and attended a classic car show. So my weekends have been busy with the various visits with my son.In addition to the visits with my son my home health aid has just started this month so I havent had as much free time as I did before. In addition to helping me with basic tasks like cooking and cleaning I
am getting some in home help with exorcize and physical therapy. While that is only a few hours each day it is none-the-less time I no longer have for other things. On a less cheerful note last Friday night I was taken to the emergency room. Fortunately, it turned out not to be very serious, and I was able to be released after a couple of hours with a laundry list of medications to pick up at the ph arm acy. Fortunately the medications did help and I seem to be on the mend. That said, an unscheduled trip to the emergency room was thus far the least favorite thing that happened to me this month.Anyway, besides that I am slowly getting back into working on games and other projects. As I hope to release a news letter soon on those developments Ill save myself from repeating that here. Just know that besides spending time with my family and getting my home health aid situation setup I am squeezing some development time in on games and other projects.

@Aaron, sounds like you had a very fun packed day . Actually I still find it amazing that there are arcades around now, sinse even in some of the major places that there used to be some they seem to have fallen off hugely. There are one or two specialized retro ones kicking around, but Ive not seen many new ones, mostly because the hole online thing has largely replaced arcades, which is rather sad. Ice and fire is awsome, though Idd recommend the books, theyre not an easy read, and definitely! have bad things happening to good people, but are extremely fun for providing such a realistic world, realistic in its nastiness as well as its well written characters. Well last night I went to the first choire practice of this volunteer choire for Zadok the priest and duel of the fates. I wasnt actually sure about duel of t
he fates given that the tnor part is a long string of g flats, but actually once I got going it was awsome! I look forward to doing it on thursday particularly sinse Ive hiered a full set of Jedi robes to do it in, (well why not!). Interestingly enough the words, korah, mahtah, Korah, rahtahmah, and the rest are a sandscript translation of a Celtic poem, which translates as What is dreaded is essentially in the head or at least that was what the conductor said. Interesting sinse I always assumed the words were just some sufficiently doomy sounding stuff that Williams fitted to the music, actually it surprises me that though mostly these days the starwars prequels are regarded as a mistake, duel of the fates is still! thought of as awsome, maybe its just that moment when the doors open and darth mawl is standing there with his double light saber! its just so wonderfully epic.

@Treugamer, agreed on ice and fire, I love the series having read it for all the reasons you mentioned. I also enjoyed world of ice and fire which is the background history of the series and the world, and is amazingly awsome if you enjoy history, colourful descriptions of different lands and peoples, and are a ig fan of Ice and fire, all of which is true of me.Ive read bits of Kafka though cant recall if I read the transformation or not, principley the one I remember was the penal colony which was interesting both for its incredibly dark and twisted depictions of torture and for the fact that said torture isnt particularly the point of the story, it was more aobut the system involved. I also have fond memories of Jackels and arabs, which is actually part of the background inspirational materials for the huge online gamebook age of fable, albeit I felt that one was a little flat despite the exotic setting and

A friend of mine is a huge nihilist and existentialist and is thus a major Kafka fan.Well for me Ive done various things, Ive banged off several reviews for www.fantasybookreview.co.uk, i, particular ones for Birdbox, Tiger Tiger, Perdido street station and black sun rising. I wont repeat myself here on any of those books though sinse people can read them on the aforementioned site, (the Bird box and black sun rising ones are posted the rest will apear soon). Ive been getting ready for the choral sing through of Duel of the fates, and also watching more Buffy which continues to be fun, although I really! miss evil angel from the last series, sinse he made such a good villain and while I can see season 3 is shaping up for some great plots around the mayor, its the kind of thing that will depend upon how its executed I think, sinse while the mayor is a nice slimy politici
an with his vampire gangster rapping partner Im not finding him half as compelling as Angel ane Spike were last series. indeed one of my favourite episodes thus far was Spikes return, love sick for drucilla, whod left him. His conclusion to this was hilarious: Oh I see now! I have been blaming everybody but myself, but what I need is to be the man she fell in love with again. So Im going to find her, tie her up, and torture her until she likes me again! It then concluded with him driving off singing along to a hard rock version of the song my way! If he (and Drucilla for that matter), werent a psychotic evil vampire it might be genuinely disturbing, but from Spike its hilarious!Faith Im not sure of at the moment, I can see the point of having a character like that who just goes for the violence of the slaying and is almost amoral but clearly has her own issues, however thus
far she seems like a total cow (her just casually sleeping with Xander was not nice). I suspect though weeden being weeden shell get her comeuppance later. In other news, Im going to be very jolly english here governor and talk all about a bloody good cuppa tea! . My mint plant has finally matured enough to the point I can pull leaves off it and make it into fresh mint tea! Its actually surprisingly nice and flavoursome, and a good head clearer on a muggy day, indeed as I found when I tried the lemon balm using fresh mint gives so much a better experience than any teabags or dried herbal varieties youd buy from shops, its just a much stronger and less bitter taste, indeed usually I find herbal teas smell more than they taste but not when done with the fresh leaves.Well there are some of the things im up to, anyone else feel
free to chime in. I dont know why this monthly topic has had less replies than the others, but still I always like knowing what people are up to and sharing more scattered and random thoughts, and theres still time to chime in for June.

Re: Monthly chat June 2015

Well hello there, although Im a bit late in the conversation.I never join these kinds of conversations because my life is rather uneventful, and yes, I never know when a world like that has 1 or 2 l in it.It seems to me that even though my writing on this forum and everywhere on the internet is rather horrifyingly terrible I can still make my life seem somewhat interesting. What have I been doing this month? Well, I finnished second year of bla bla bla lalala school, which in swedish translates to Gymnasium but actually, has nothing to do with the english version of a gymnasium Ever since that, well thereve been Solstis (is that today?), and a lot of game playing, particularly Alter Aeon, but I wont tell you about Alter even though I c
ould rant about it forever (trust me Ive been doing this to poor victims on Skype lately, who, fortunately for me, also were interested in Alter )Next friday Im going sailing on Krokholmen which Im sure youve heard me talk about before, its gonna be totally awesome. I stay there til July 12th or something, I dont really want to know when I get home again The two last books I read, although actually none this month sadly, was the transformation (is it called that?) by Frans Kafka, while, even though for one of my classes was totally amazing. I had to proceed that with an analysis (I mangled that word). My whole analysis evolved around the question can you interpret the novel as a discription of the identity-seaking as a teena
ger?. It was rather fun both reading and writing it, well, reading the book and writing the analysis, haw. No one in my class other than me liked the book though, but then again, I enjoy reading a lot of odd literature (odd for some people). Ill gladly discuss the book further if anyone else has read it.The second one was a Dance with Dragons by George R R martin, which left me hungering for more of a song of ice and fire. Unfortunately, the copy I got was broken, so some chapters got cut in the end which left me going wtf? sometimes when talking about the series.Anyway, a song of ice and fire (starting with game of thrones) is definitely worth reading. It is the best fantacy series I have ever indulged myself in (although its pretty much the only fantacy Ive read except for Harry Potter and Arragon, yes, I didnt go to deep into Tolkiens work).A song of ice and fire has everything for everyone over the age of 1
5 The world building is okay, and so is the plot and the movement of the book. Though, where it really shines like nothing else (fantacy or not) is the characters. Its not only a question of character depth and backround story, but the character developement is very realistic from a psychological perspective.Another thing I like with the series is how theres no clear antagonist or protagonist (although Ive always felt more for the Stark family). The third thing that makes me love this series (hurrying because dinner is served) ... is the mystery surrounding the usage of magic and even a questioning what magic really is. In game of thrones you wont see lightning bolts / fireballs in combat. Magic is a suttle thing here, I love how its presented.Anyway dinner, and Im starving.

Re: Monthly chat June 2015

Hello,I must confess I havent read the song of ice and fire, but Ive heard some good things about it, so might have to give it a try somehowHonestly, I havent posted much in here because I have sort of been busy, as this month has been my Birthday and the celebrations have lasted a while. My Birthday was near the begining of the month. The weekend before my Birthday we went to a place called Southsea, and walked from Southsea to Gumwarf Quays, and had some food and did some shopping. It was quite a nice walk. From there we went back to Southsea and there were some amusement arcades there. Thre were a lot of new games I particularly laughed my head off when Dad played a game called Flying Tickets, which is a bit like Flappy Bird but in the arcades. He went splat within the first two seconds, 8-bit chiptune and all and the most hilariously short splat sound ever.We also had a go at some air hockey, but with a twist. Pac-man Smash is air hocke
y which is fine, but the fun really starts once someone plunks their first goal in. The table becomes filled with mini pucks, around six of them possibly more, and it then becomes a race of points as everyones frantically joining in trying to hit the pucks into the two goals for points, and then just when you think its all over, the pucks come flying out for one more round before the game ends. I think my Dad utterly frashed me and Mum this time.Next up we had Mario Kart Arcade Gp Delux, or dx. I played as pac-man (yes, they did actually put pac-man in the game because Namco were also involved in developing the arcade features), and did an easy track race. I got knocked out a couple of times by other karts throwing items, but me and Dad managed to catch up. dad steered while I controled the acceleration and threw the items at the other karts. We bagged a few of them too.We found a surprise in the form of Pac-man basketball, sound effects and all. It was ridic
ulous. I got a few balls in the basket but it was a little tricky, but still fun.We also played Transformers: Human Alliance, a lightgun game, so Dad helped me aim and hit the targets. For my actual Birthday, we didnt do too much, although I got lots of Disney cds from a new line called the Legacy Collection which contains the complete soundtracks and some demo songs from various films such as The Lion King, LittleMermaid, and Mary Poppins to name a few. Each collection is like a book, with behind the scenes info at the front and the cds at the back. What I find very interesting is that some of these tracks exceed ten minutes in length, indeed theres one on the Lion King that lasts a good eleven minutes or so.A couple of weeks ago I had a get together with some friends, where we just chilled out and chatted. I have also kept in contact with some friends I met in America which is always a blast.

Re: Monthly chat June 2015

PA (Pennsylvania) is one of the bigger states in the Northeast; IIRC, its one of the landlocked original 13 colonies. It contains Philidelphia, which was one of the candidate national capitals back in the eighteenth century, and Pitsburgh, which is mostly known for steel production, and is otherwise depicted as mountains and small towns. You can usually guess how close to the center of the country a location is by how often people abbreviate it, with some exceptions for the west coast (People still spell Seattle and Portland for some reason). The eastern states are almost always abbreviated to things like NY, Mass, NJ, NH, VA, NC, SC, etc (Even Phillidelphia gets called Philli half the time). But you only ever hear Texas abbreviated if people are referring to specific cities like Austin or Dallas. On the other hand, places near the southern border of Texas get shortened a lot (Rio for Rio Grande Valley, for example). (Yes, Texas is big enoug
h that it gets to have a sliding scale of abbreviation.)There are occasional exceptions for Oklahoma City (OKC) and Saint Louis (SL). Kansas City seems to be getting there, but I dont know enough about that area to know if thats always been the case, or if its catching on because its become a popular Soccer venue.Generally speaking, the Northeast can be treated like oversized counties, the west coast has Hollywood and Silicon Valley, and Texas is Texas. Everyone on the east and west coast is free to completely ignore everything in the middle (it even has its own name among coastal elites: fly over country). You might hear about Florida quite a bit for both the tourist attractions and the bizarre number of bizarre things that seem to happen there. In all the research I did last year on the people that were here before the Puritans came over and unleashed 300 years of darkness, these things applied to Florida even before the genocidal racism
reached it.You mostly only ever hear about the middle states from stereotypes (like Cleetus), when a politician does something particularly extreme (Arkansas spawned both Bill Clinton and Tom Cotton), or when some terrifying stories come out of a small town and inspire either a horror flick or lots of internet rage.Since Hollywood is free to ignore Middle America, yet exports most of Middle Americas TV and film, a lot of Americanisms can get lost on their target audience, too. Like, Ive actually had to research these things (because I always have at least a dozen unfinished projects going on at any given time, and the only continent I manage to ignore is Australia). As a bonus, all my research really makes the American Revolution seem way less heroic than school portrayed it. Taxation without Representation is a nice mantra, and all, and the Martial Law and invasion of privacy after the protests and political imprisonment were awful, but i
t mostly seems to have escalated because the settlers did not like being told they cant do whatever they want, including ignoring the sovereignty of the people in the lands they wanted, even after George III agreed on borders with many of them after the French and Indian War. (Which, as I recall, involved George Washington accidentally setting a piece of the Wars of Austrian Succession into motion, but I think I read that on Cracked, so it might be a bit exaggerated.)But mostly Im just upset about the destruction of Cayuga Castle. They called it a castle! The Revolutionaries could have at least moved in and used it, instead of burning it to the ground. For the crops, at least. They were a starving army fighting the British Empire, for crying out loud! Were they expecting the Iroquois to be more likely to mount a successful counterattack if they left it usable? Were they too focused on moving and didnt want anyone using it as a base?(I want to make some
thing set in the world of Iroquois folklore, but Im kinda terrified that Id offend most of the Iroquois by trying. I know that masks are off limits and I should stick with animal-themed names because doing names properly is a religious matter and my working title was a terrible choice and I need a new one... and the forward of the book I was using as my main source gives me more to worry about... -_- I started on the idea because I wanted to do something with an underappreciated culture, and Hollywood Natives are basically romanticized stereotypes of Planes and Pacific Northwest Indians. Disneys Pocahontas is apparently one of the better depictions, and it has issues, too. It also matters that they tried to depict a specific people from coastal Virginia.)

nothing wrong with the science, btw, where is Pa? again, all these Americanisms really are a tad confusing .Dragon riders I read a good few books of at one stage, but I just gave up when I found that the characters and plots were so predictable, when it got to the point I could pretty much guess who the main character would end up with just by how he was described when he first appeared. I also found the amount of character safety went a bit far, indeed after Fax the dictator (who really wasnt that much of a dictator anyway), was dispatched in the first book, it seems everything went far too safe and homy most of the time, or at least even if someone did have a really bad accident they recovered pretty quickly and dramatically (usually meeting their beloved/dragon/long estranged friend along the way, . Im continuing at the moment with Perdido street station, indeed as it is so long I probably will be for a while although its a hugely fascinating, if extremely dark story, Mievil is definitely going up to my favourite authors list for this one. it did however contrast very weerdly with Fatehaven that I played through yesterday, being as fatehaven was pretty usual light fantasy teretory, relatively usual orcs and dwarves and elves and even lizardmen, although very well written and a rather fun game. Its interesting that had it been a standard novel Id probably have only described it as average to fun, but I really enjoyed it being interactive.

I call myself a redneck even though I live in PA, which, is above the Mason Dixon line, because I like country music, like to hunt and fish, like to ride dirtbikes and the like and love to shoot guns. But I do know how to read, heh. Ive finished the Dragon Riders of Pern series, well, the ones I care about, that of the 9th pass, last month. Now Im back onto star trek novels. Nothing new there, read it all before, I read a non fiction book about a man who lived through the launch of the Voyager 2 which was launched in 1977. That was good, and had a lot of detail on what went on when he hit the scene after high school, and it contained some speculation about what will happen in the future. I read a book where the author debunked popular myths about wildlife, which was interesting. Then I read one about the research both old and current about the treatment of MS and theories as to its cause and what it would take to find a cure. I found that one of interest. I tend to get
  into the science.

@Aaron, Im definitely rather jealous. I went to florida when I was fourteen, but I havent been sinse and Id love to see all the harry potter stuff etc. I did get to go on some cool things like space mountain and the back to the future and terminator rides. The Terminator one was particularly awsome because during the kew in there was a promotional video from cyberdine systems explaining all the bennifits of robot technology which was interupted by a broadcast from Sarah Conner and the resistance explaining that the timelines hadnt been changed and the end of the world was happening again. Of course, sinse hollywood is now doing poned pony pounding on the terminator series it probably is inaccurate with whatever contortions the plots gone through lately, but it was cool all the same, actually if I described all the things which were cool wed be here for quite some time. Ive been to euro disny a couple of times sinse, but not orlando,
indeed Ive seen the real! pyramid in Memphis but not the redneck one Cae describes, indeed Im not really %100 sure what the definition of Rednecks is accept for characters like Cletus and Brandeen on the Simpsons.@Afrim, unfortunately with these so called judged festivals, you cant guarantee the judge is that impartial. When I went to one last year, the musicals section was won by a lady who sung somewhere over the rainbow in full operatic iction, (I di Master of the house from Les miserables and got an honourable mention). The lady had a good voice, but yee gods! why the hell did she have to sing somewhere over the rainbow as though it was Madam Butterfly. I know directors who wouldve picked up on that streight off, but sadly not the judge which was annoying because there were some really good performances, like one amazing base who sung Call the wind Mariah! which was awsome!Well I surprisingly got d
one all of what I planned yesterday, or at least in part. I sent off a new front of site text to Sander, I wrote a review of black sun rising (which Ill be spellchecking, giving a last check through for content and sending off today), and! I started on yetti patrol officer, although I got interupted mid way through and watched Inferno instead, one of the most awsome third doctor stories which happened to be on tv, which even features a paralell world with an evil Brigadier! As to worlds of big finish, well the way the plot ran was nice, but the end was just a wimper sinse the big bad enemies were pretty pathetic, both in terms of their easily defeatedness, and in terms of them having probably the least impressive audio presence for any bf foe Ive seen.I also was rather disappointed that more characters from the different series didnt meet each other. The writer said in the extras that he didnt want to mess with Sherlock holms chronology sin
se obviously holmes would notice if hed been dragged to an alien planet, neither did he want to do the very lame amnesia plot, however why couldnt he have some of the other characters meet up? The only two who did were Vienna Salvatori and Burnice Summerfield, probably two of the least interesting to confront each other both being pretty tough, futuristic ladies, one a bounty hunter the other a professor of archaeology. Very different from say Iris or Dorian grey, or for that matter Amy and Zara from Graceless. If youve not heard many of the series Aaron Im not sure if worlds of bf would be a good one to go with sinse a lot would be a bit incomprehensible. For example Graceless stars two very naive girls (they were literally only created a sort time ago), with nearly infinite power to traverse time and space and make crazy stuf happen, while Dorian features someone who is nearly immortal thanks to a deal he made with his portraite so that all his
sins and trials are tracked onto the picture. The only one of the series Id not heard was Bfs take on Sherlock, but sinse Im very familiar with Sherlock Holmes anyway it didnt matter too much.

Things are generally going well. This is the season of final exams for me and I have to study then Ill get the degree, diploma, or whatever you like to call it. On Friday I had the final exam on literature, which, for the first time was extraordinarily boring and really complicated. We had a text in the beginning which sounded really inaccurate and out of the way, since the high school students, I think, must have a more daily basis text written on paper. It really gave me the impression like they were trying to make everything as hard as possible, which, for the level of students here, who honestly arent so good, would sound like reading a scientific book, full of theories and statements. But in the end, I managed to finish everything in a good way, and hope a good mark will come soon.On Sunday I went to a national festival of modern music where my friend was taking part, and he hopefully grabbed a prize. Not that he was bad though. In the end we were rea
lly disappointed when the presenters gave the big prize for a song full of commercialism and filled with rap music, which clearly didnt deserve it when comparing to a rock song which was really far far better than the other songs contesting.

I dont know on the novella cae, I can totally see a game of thrones style noble knight by the name of Sir Bubba sunback, whos crest is a duck with a red kneck . The distinctions between redneck, hillbilly, and generally cowboy/cowgirl type of thing always seem a bit weerd to me sinse while Ive certainly seen lots of american series and even some fantasy series that have characters with a southern Us drawl who live in an outdoors or farming way and know about guns and such, (even Avatar had some swamp benders, who also proved to be awsome), theyre only sometimes ignorant or portrayed as overly conservative. Likewise only sometimes the term redneck is used, plus there are so many masculine cowboy sterriotypes that are adopted by even suburban Americans (at least in fiction), it always confuses me. For example, Mark Tufo used the term r
ednecks in his zombie series to describe a bunch of ignorant men in a truck with lots of guns who went around kidnapping women for less than savory purposes, but then the main character was a down right paranoid ex marine who also had a gun fixation and a less than stellar take on gender relations, so it pretty much seemed the pot calling the kettle red, then again MArk Tufo is hardly someone Id recommend as a paragon of the writers craft .Like a lot of american sterriotypes the idea seems a bit whacky to me, particularly sinse there is nothing comparable in Britain, indeed in Britain farmers are pretty much still very respectable. Well speaking of authors Ive started on perdido street station by China Meevil. Ive been recommended his stuff (and it is a him), for a while, and this is my first forray, and good gods! this is awsome
! i dont think Ive read something like this (well not sinse rothfus), which is this detailed or this compelling, and its certainly the down right strangest thing ive read, Im not sure whether its steampunk, traditional fantasy or heck weerd sf, but its both utterly weerd and entirely disturbing! Ive also just come back from a concert where we had Britons young persons guide to the orchestra, which was very well played but horribly narrated, (one of the actors had a voice like a witch), and also far too full of pop culture references (really when your describing the sound of a trombone like being hit by the hammer of Thaw its a bit desperate). Though they also did Chostakovichs second piano concerto which was amazing!

Re: Monthly chat June 2015

At Dark: Rednecks are basically like the Rednecks on TV, only TV exaggerates. It isnt exactly clear to me where the line between being interested in things like hunting/fishing/trucks/cowboys and redneckery falls. There seem to be more cultural elements involved--US-style conservatism and Libertarianism tend to get associated with this culture, for example. (Westerns seem popular with Redneck-types, even though the Wild West and the Redneck cultures differ a decent amount. I assume its because the romanticized version of the West has a lot in common with things Rednecks are usually into: riding horses and shooting and combining both with all sorts of fancy tricks while probably evading the law for some sympathetic reason. Give Robin Hood a .22, cowboy boots, and a Texas accent, and leave most else the same, and his popularity among Rednecks would probably skyrocket.)Its basically a more rural culture transplanted to an environment where farming to surv
ive isnt really necessary and everyone can drive. If the US were more classist, yall would be our thou even without the French influence. (Actually, aint probably suffers from this, but that seems to be the case all across the Anglosphere.)Think Country Music, Duck Dynasty, Swamp People, and some of the Fishing shows where the hosts have more distinctly regional accents. And names like Bubba and Elvis, although those seem to be dying out... people do tack Bubba on to anything they want to emphasize as being Redneck in origin. For example, there was an enormous fishknife at the Basse Pro-shop called the Bubbaknife, which kinda looked like a meat cleaver... Im not really up to date on my cuttlery, but it was one of the biggest knives Ive seen... for cleaning/fileting/etc fish. ... Its probably bigger than most of the fish anyones going to use it on. It makes me want to write a modern fantasy story set around Seve
n Devils Swamp, because if theres anything to the stories Ive heard about that place, its probably the best area between Michigan and Louisiana for an American Swords and Sorcery adventure. (Well, Bubbaknife and Biblecraft, at least.)If youre at all familiar with Jeff Foxworthys You might be a Redneck skits, they seem to be popular among rednecks and family-of-rednecks, because everyone knows someone for whom the hyperbole is only just! hyperbole. (Or at least drove by the house of some such person. Probably in a pickup truck, but before SUVs really took off, it was harder to find someone who didnt own a pickup truck at some point.)The stereotype of Rednecks in cheap, falling-apart vehicles is a bit exaggerated. From what I can tell, theres a tendency to hold on to one or two vehicles of exactly that description, but to buy and trade and repair vehicles often enough that you almost never hear someone puttering down
the road with an engine that backfires every five seconds. If theyre not doing a lot of land vehicle-shuffling, they at least do a good deal with boats. There is still some cultural element to this I cant quite put my finger on, though. Its easily possible to be a hunter/fisherman/mechanic without really falling into Redneck territory. Although more enthusiasm about horses and guns (particularly sport rifles and shotguns, although maybe more tech-savvy rednecks are the ones buying AR15s these days?) seem like stronger evidence of Redneckery.Oh, and Nascar. And Racism. Rednecks pretty much have to be mostly Caucasian, although the limited population I know of seems to have noticeable traces of Native American heritage (It helps that Cherokee culture adapted very well to White Southerner culture during the less overtly oppressive parts of the 19th century).Theres a lot of overlap with Hillbillies, but Redneck tends to imply more fields an
d water. Its generally used as sort of an indicator of low sophistication / socioeconomic status, but I kinda feel like that has lost meaning--you might have guessed from the term that it implies someone that has spent a lot of time working in the sun, but since that part is all but completely optional anymore, its more or less a cultural cluster.I do feel like theres something of a masculin bend to it; most women who get into it tend to identify more as country (or cowgirl, if theyre particularly enthusiastic). Theyll go for the aesthetic--clothing, food, music, accessories, loud fast-moving vehicles--and can definitely use all the traditional farmer weapons if need be. But its kinda weird to hear a woman called a Redneck, unless its being used to describe a group to which she belongs. (I imagine it goes back to the Fieldwork - literal red neck origins, although thats kinda weird because I
m pretty sure women worked in the fields, too.)..Did I just write a novella in search of the definition of Redneck?...I really need to get back to writing novellas about Swords and Sorcery. Although a Bubbaknife and Biblecraft tabletop campaign is sounding potentially entertaining

Re: Monthly chat June 2015

Hello,I wouldnt mind starting a blog myself. I dont really know too much about wordpress, Id imagine its confusing though because theres a lot of features, but maybe there could be a more basic version available. Im not too sure.Im quite interested in the worlds of Big Finish, it will be an interesting crossover. Although, Ive still got to finish Dark Eyes 1 first!I havent posted in this topic for a while because Ive been trying to figure out what, and how, to post what happened in April and early May. I consider myself very lucky, because I got to go to orlando to the theme parks, and the trouble with that, is so much stuff happened I dndt know how to word it but I tried several times. The new rides are good though, Ill say that much, it puts the UKs theme parks to shame. There is atmosphere everywhere, even in the queue lines, so it doesnt reall feel like a queue. Youve al
so got your fast pass so you can book times to do rides if you want to as well. I enjoyed Space Mountain, which Ive actually not done before even though Ive been a couple of times.I also enjoyed the harry potter stuff at Universal, it is very immersive. Its kind of hidden from the rest of the park, so basically, its easy to find but as you go through the entrance of the potter area the rest of the park kind of vanishes behind you and the sound surrounds you. Going down into the Gringotts vaults was awesome, along with going to Hogwarts and flying with harry. I think Gringotts was slightly better though because there seemed to be more music, and the fact that you encounter Voldemort really brings something the Hogwarts ride didnt. I think everyone was expecting Voldemort when Hogsmeed and Hogwarts opened, but that never happened, so I think they tried to make it pu to everyone by putting him in the Gringotts ride climax. Its a little strange
cannon wise but it does also work.

Monthly chat June 2015

Another month, another monthly chat topic. As usual, this is the place for any random and general conversations you want to make. Talk about life, the universe and everything (including cricket robots and the number 42), what your reading/watching/listening to/playing, about School, work, university or just general laziness, about frolicccs, fripparies and frothy frogs. As usual I get to go first. its an unfare system I know, but its only unfare to people who arent me so its not a problem from where Im standing . Things have been a little quieter, well at least until a hole bunch of things came up at once a few days ago and Ive been running around getting things done. Right now today I have three main projects I need to work on, first, Ive just finished C S friedmans black sun rising and I want to do a b
ook review, then i want to see if I can rewrite the front of site explanation to be a trifle more updated, and then! I am in the middle of learning errantry by Donald swan. Its one of tolkiens poems set to music but is one of the most amazing settings ever, though its a real challenge to sing. In between all of that I do want to play a bit more of adventure to fate today and maybe start on another of the choiceofgames titles. As I said in general game discussion I really! enjoyed the shadow horror which has spurred me to play more of them, though Im also just finishing worlds of big finish which was the bf crossover between Graceless, Dorian grey, Sherloc, Holmes, Iris wild time and Vienna. I wouldnt have expected those to work, particularly because Vienna is futuristic, Graceless hops about in time like Doctor who, and Iris is just whacky, while the other two are pretty firmly 19th (and to an extent with Dorian), 20th century and modern day. But
the plot seems to be working with a book that predicts a transtemporal invasion, I particularly liked Iris going back in time to defuse a bomb that Sherlock holmes found in an earlier story, albeit that the big bad enemy doesnt really seem to live up to being big and bad thus far, stil Ive got a bit more to go so well see. So lots of stuff happening, and projects to be doing. Ive actually considered starting a blog sinse I have so many random things in my life from literature to games to philosophy, but when I looked at blog software wordpress console was as confusing as heck, and Blogspots console was %100 inaccessible, though at least with a blogger account I can now comment other peoples blogs which is handy. Still I suppose blog suggestions probably would need their own topic.

Re: Monthly chat June 2015

Disney World, Orlando is still my prime example of crowd control done right. The Memphis Pyramid (Tennessee, not Egypt) was recently sold, and converted into an enormous Basse Pro-shop. So my family decided to go check it out a couple weeks ago, and I was way too out of it to bother saying it in last months chat.I bring it up because, at first, my dad described it as Disney World for Rednecks. After a while, I pointed out that it was more comparable to Universal Studios, because the crowd control was... ah... not Disney quality.I normally wouldnt have been especially interested in a Basse Pro-shop, even one that was transformed into a mutant cross between a themepark and a shopping center, but this one actually did seem kinda impressive, chaotic swarm of rednecks aside. They managed to make it pretty atmospheric, but without the stupid amounts of heat humidity and 10 species of blood-sucking invertebrates that youd find in a real-life swamp-sedge
river or lake. Had I not been really tired and really thirsty the whole time, I might have been able to take in a bit more to report on.As for now... I need to whack the American healthcare system with a few sticks until I actually have a doctor and can get insurance to pay for things. Then maybe see if I can come up with something to slay the Demon Lord of Sloth. Or rather, see if I can make noise at Doctors until they come up with something of Demon-slaying. The sooner I can pick up like everything since summer 2006 didnt happen, the better. In the mean time, I guess Im trying to catch up on BK3. Its a little frustrating in the sense that, not only do I have to wrestle with whatever neurological maladies have robbed me of my ability to hammer out epics in a week, but BK3 has raised the bar high enough that I have strong doubts that LC will stand a chance, even if it turns out perfectly as I invision. ... Wait, thats not how you spell
ot;invision? WTPF, English? ... Is it spelled with an e? Envision? Firefox thinks so. Hmmph, so be it, then.
