Hi everyone. To @crashmaster: Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, we require participants to already own game controllers for this study. We make extensive use of the analog sticks, and so a keyboard/mouse will not work. However, we appreciate the interest, and we'll post here again for studies in the future. To @Gamulation: Thank you for signing up. I am not sure if I understand the question, but if you are asking what games we are testing with, then we are using a game that we ourselves created which mimics existing action RPG games.

Paid Columbia Research Study: Navigating in Games Using Sound

2021-02-16 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Off-topic room : NairVish via Audiogames-reflector

Paid Columbia Research Study: Navigating in Games Using Sound

Hi everyone! I am a PhD student at Columbia University doing research on making existing video games blind-accessible. We created several new tools to help people with visual impairments navigate video game worlds using sound, and we are looking for users to try them out and give us feedback about them. This is a paid study: it will last no longer than 2 hours, and participants will be given a $25 gift card for their time.Study participants will play several levels of a video game using a video game controller and a standard pair of headphones. You must have your own controller to participate. (Please read the FAQs below for specific prerequisites.)We will be conducting the study entirely online. We will send you a link to download the game, and we will use a phone call or audio chat session to converse while conducting the study. This study has been approved by the Columbia University Institutional Review Board (IRB Protocol Number IRB-AAAT5967).Sign-up by filling out the Google Form linked here.Feel free to ask any questions and I will be happy to respond. You may contact me directly (via a forum email or PM) through my profile for more information.FAQWill I be paid to participate in the study? We will give you a $25 Amazon.com gift card to pay you for your time. Are there any prerequisites to participating in this study? You must have a standard pair of headphones, a modern game controller, and a computer capable of running our video game. Here, “modern game controller” refers to any relatively-recent XInput- or DirectInput-compatible gamepad (for example, Xbox or PlayStation controllers). If you are not sure as to whether your controller will work, feel free to list it in the sign-up form, and we will get back to you if your controller is a suitable match.Your computer must be running Windows or MacOS. If your computer is running Windows, it must be running Windows 7 (SP1 or higher) or Windows 10. If your computer is running MacOS, it must be running MacOS High Sierra (10.13) or higher. Are there any risks? There are no physical risks related to participating in this research study. Are there benefits to taking part in the study? You will not receive personal (direct) benefit from taking part in this research study. However, the information collected from this research may help others in the future. We hope to make navigation in video games and in the real world much easier and more effective. What information will be collected? We'll ask you to complete surveys before, during, and after you play the video game. We will also collect some of your player movement data as you play the video game. We will not collect any other information. How will my information be protected? All information that we collect will be stored securely. The name and email address you provide will be kept confidential.

Hi everyone. Thank you all for your interest. To address all of your questions and concerns:@brad: Thank you so much for your interest in the study. Unfortunately, this study requires a game controller, specifically we make extensive use of the analog sticks and, thus, cannot use a keyboard and mouse. However, we appreciate your interest, and we'll definitely post again here for future studies.@Trajectory: This study is open to everyone, including people outside of the United States. The only difference is that we cannot purchase controllers for international participants. I realize that the wording in the original post is a bit unclear, so I've edited it slightly to make it clearer.@Blind angel 444: We will be doing this study for the next two weeks, so please sign up if you are able and interested! We will definitely also keep everyone here updated about future opportunities.@CAE_Jones: Thank you for your interest. @Liam is correct in that we prefer a somewhat current controller with X-Input compatibility. Any controller that works with modern games should work. Unfortunately, a PS1 controller will not work because it lacks analog sticks, and we make extensive use of the sticks for this study. However, we will definitely post here for future opportunities.@crashmaster: Thank you so much for signing up. We're actually holding this study right now and have time slots open for the next two weeks. Regarding international participants, we should be able to compensate you, but it will be with a gift card and not with a controller. We are only able to buy controllers for participants in the United States.

Thanks, everyone, for all of your encouragement! I am also at Columbia and am working with NairVish on this project. Feel free to ping either of us with questions about the project, or just reply here on this thread.@defender: Thanks for the advice. If it comes down to it, another option might be (resources permitting) to get you a game controller that you can keep and no gift card this time around. (Maybe gift cards for future studies though!)@crashmaster: For this study, we'd like everyone to use a controller and not just a joystick so that we can compare apples to apples in our study results. But the work that we are doing will be useful for joysticks and other accessible controllers such as the Xbox Adaptive Controller too. @CAE_Jones: Any game controller that can connect to your computer should work. The study sign-up form asks you to specify what kind you have, just so we can make sure that it will work with that controller.@AlirezaNosrati: The work that we're doing should make it easier to navigate in many types of games and not just our own games. We plan to make all of our code open-source so that developers can integrate it into their games.

Re: Paid Columbia Research Study: Navigating in Games Using Sound

Let me know if you still need people after the initial round, I don't have a controller and I wouldn't want to ask you to buy me one unless you really needed me.Also try posting on "blind.reddit.com" and "ablegamers.org".Awesome what you guys are doing!

Paid Columbia Research Study: Navigating in Games Using Sound

Hi everyone! I am a PhD student at Columbia University doing research on making existing video games blind-accessible. We created several new tools to help people with visual impairments navigate using sound, and we are looking for users to try them out and give us feedback about them. This is a paid study: it will last no longer than 90 minutes and participants will be given a $25 gift card for their time.Study participants will play several versions of a video game using a video game controller and a standard pair of headphones. If you do not have a game controller, we can order a new one for you, but we only have the resources to do this for a small number of study participants. We will be conducting the study entirely online. We will send you a link to download the game, and we will use a phone call or audio chat session to converse while conducting the study. This study has been approved by the Columbia University Institutional Review Board (IRB Protocol Number IRB-AAAS8850).Sign-up by filling out the Google Form linked here.Feel free to ask any questions and I will be happy to respond. You may contact me directly (via a forum email or PM) through my profile for more information.FAQWill I be paid to participate in the study? We will give you a $25 gift card to pay you for your time. Are there any risks? There are no physical risks related to participating in this research study. Are there benefits to taking part in the study?Aside from the gift card that we will give you, you will not receive personal (direct) benefit from taking part in this research study. However, the information collected from this research may help others in the future. We hope to make navigation in video games and in the real world much easier and more effective. What information will be collected? We'll ask you to complete a survey after you play the video game. We will also collect some of your player movement data as you play the video game. We will not collect any other information. How will my information be protected?Your survey data will be fully anonymized and encrypted. We will not ask any identifying information in the survey.
