Re: Ascii games

There has traditionally been some efforts made to get  roguelikes more accessible, but the problem ultimately is that your dealing with one character in a  topdown view in a very large world which is randomly generated. Look cursers to move around from the players' position and say distance say to nearest object, I even saw one which tried to give ideas of the rooms. None have been quite successful as yet, and I suspect until someone comes up with a full screen sized braille display that would let you have  much by way of braille characters on screen as a sighted person gets print characters, they probably won't be.

Re: Ascii games

Yes, it's great that we have more accessible games now. I once read the very first audyssy issues from 1996 or so and the most part of it discussed ASCII games and how to Play them best with speech Synthesizers.

Re: Ascii games

Actually, warsim and the wastes are not ascii games. They do contain ascii directions and art, but those elements are repressed in accessibility mode because they tend to be inaccessible. Actual ascii games are roguelikes, most famously games like rogue and nethack. These are of course unplayable with a screen reader precisely as blindncool said. I have heard people have had some success playing them with braille displays, but even then, given that an ascii character display can cover the entire screen being hundreds of characters wise and hundreds of characters across, and even a top line braille display can only display one single line of ascii characters 120 characters wide (and that is assuming you have a very! expensive braille display, most are only 40 cells), you would need to do a hell of a lot of looking around the screen and mental mapping to get an idea what is around you. This is  games like rogue are not listed on this site since while some pe
ople have played them, they are far from truly accessible, i.e. a blind person has a waay harder time than a sighted person.

Re: Ascii games

How do you even play those games without sight? Your screen reader would just read out random ASCII characters.

Re: Ascii games

A game where all is represented with text characters in ASCII code. So for example there would be a specific character for the floor and another for the Player Position and so on. This was popular before graphical games came. I don't know whether I would classify The Wastes or Warsim as ASCII games because they use real text, not Pictures repressented with text.
