Ouch! Well, at least Microsoft isn't charging as much for Windows 10 as they used to with earlier versions.

Re: Free Windows 10 Upgrade for Assistive Technology Users Ending Dec. 31

I'm actually surprised that the free upgrade offer ended at all. I don't think it's because Microsoft has polished existing accessibility, although it is true that it's improved by leaps and bounds, and is only set to get better. I think it's because they knew that many people were taking advantage of the offer, people who used no assistive tech at all, and now that they've gotten as many people to switch to Windows 10 as is probably going to happen in the foreseeable future, they're taking the offer away. Or maybe it caused them to lose more revenue than expected. Either way, I always did say that the free upgrade offer was a marketing ploy, and it appears that was the truth.

Re: Free Windows 10 Upgrade for Assistive Technology Users Ending Dec. 31

so people are installing windows 10 because they think it's easier to install than 7 or 8?there are talking installers for both available and I use them a lot for fixing people's computers. after a full install of win 7 for example narrator will work strait off at the setup screen.I refused to upgrade from xp to vista back in the day because I knew too much about it. it was badly written and badly supported and businesses weren't even going near it.when 7 came out I was happy to upgrade to that. loved it and still do. I still don't understand why Microsoft don't; as somebody mentioned earlier; just bring out optional updates for things like the visuals, start menus or what ever and just stick to windows 7 as they should have. instead they brought out 8 which was a total flop and now 10 which pretty much nobody I know likes and my friends who work in large companies on the tech teams tell me they are refusing to upgrade to again like they did with vista.a lot of huge companies in England are only just switching from xp because ms stopped support and updates and so then anti virus companies etc did as well. I'm even getting messages on websites now telling me they don't support internet explorer and to update to edge so even people running windows 10 are going to have that problem unless jaws finally fixed it in the new version.most computers you buy now will come with win 10 pre installed and you have no choice. they can't be roled back because of the convoluted way it works with the bios and the hard drive. it's doable, I've done it for a couple of people but it is insanely complicated and I don't think ms have the rite to force that on people if they don't want it. they force it to the point that if you have a 7th gen processor, one of the windows 7 updates detects that and keeps telling you to update to windows 10 and runs like crap if you ignore it.

Re: Free Windows 10 Upgrade for Assistive Technology Users Ending Dec. 31

Even though my sole experience of win 10, using my dad's computer, wasn't great, I'm tempted to install it on my old laptop just to check out some of the tweeks people talk about and to see if it really does compete with win 7, or even better it. Also it is inevitable I'll have to upgrade at some point so I could do with getting my eye in. I followed the link to the article, and ended up following another link that took me to a page where you could download a windows 10 media creation tool that lets you create a disc to do a clean install of win 10, which is what I'd rather do. What I'm not sure about though, is that it mentions needing a retail key for win 7, which I don't have, it's OEM, but it says if win 7 is already activated, 10 should activate automatically. Trouble with this is it says the key will then be a win 10 key and will no longer be usable for activating 7. If win 10 is anything like it was on my dad's laptop, slow and annoying, I'll want to go back to 7.I have the disc ready to roll, but am just anticipating a lot of messing I could probably do without. My biggest concern being it won't accept the key for my win 7, and I'll end up either having to buy a 10 key, or reinstall win 7 and all that entails. Not sure I'm bored enough right now to go down this road heheh. Definitely only doing this out of curiosity not necessity.

The sad thing about all this is that after 30 years, you'd think that Microsoft would know how to write a decent operating system, yet it seems they still don't know how to get it right.

only reason I like windows 10 is because of the windows 10 OCR with NVDA, and the xbox one streaming.  if it wasn't for those 2 features I would not be on 10. I basicly hate everything else about 10. and don't even get me started on the CPU usage and things like that.

Hehe. I also jumped from Xp directly to 10 about a month ago, so it's a fresh and new thing for me.Out of the box Windows 10 has many irritating "features", but with some tweeking most of them can be put out of the way, so in the end it becomes more familiar and usable.

As soon as I found out that Microsoft finally made Windows PE talk using Narrator, I jumped onto the Windows 10 bandwagon and haven't looked back. I know I've criticized Microsoft in the past, but they have completely changed their attitude regarding Accessibility and user feedback. Heck, they just implemented eye control in the latest version of Windows 10 which is awesome! As those who read my earlier posts will know, I was stuck on Windows XP for the longest time. I couldn't stand Windows Vista and newer for various reasons including changes to the user interface and program compatibility issues. While there are still things that drive me crazy in Windows 10, the Narrator improvements and various tweaks such as Classic Shell and Ribbon Disabler have made the experience decent enough to make me upgrade. I still wish Microsoft would have kept the good old simple Windows XP interface and upgraded the underlying system. This is one reason I switched to macOS. Apple doesn't constantly revamp the user interface with each major revision of the operating system. I'm using High Sierra right now and the experience is practically identical to something like Snow Leopard or Leopard.Windows 7 is going to be the new Windows XP. I'm absolutely certain of that. Now that I think about it, would I have bothered continuing to use Windows if Narrator hadn't been revamped? I don't know. I'm still glad the attitude at Microsoft has changed. The Narrator support in Windows PE has made me strongly consider a career in computer technical support. I know I'll have to deal with the less accessible Windows 7 and 8 installers and versions of Narrator for a while, but not for that long. Thomas Ward told me a few years ago that people would fight change kicking and screaming until they made the change; at which point they would love it. The more I think about it, he was right. It just took the right features to persuade me to take the plunge.

Hi. Audio ducking in Win10 would be great, if it's strength/depth was adjustable, as at the moment it is too harsh to my taste, so not using that all that much.

I think that windows10 is accessible enough. Practicly all apps on there are accessible, at leest those that are all reddy installed like mail and Microsoft edge, though I wouldn't still recommend edge, And, audio ducking as farr as I know doesn't work on win7, so just an other reason to take this chanse to upgrade to win10.

not sure I understood the question properly but if you can copy your win 10 key off that machine then decide to use it later on the one you're going to put windows 7 on, you should be able to get away with it. as in, you would need a win 7 key, but if you decided to upgrade later, the win 10 key you have should work.
