Re: Genux OS: My thoughts
Re: Genux OS: My thoughts Hello, after the loading FreeDOS message, do you get a menu with options such as load FreeDOS with Gemex, safe boot, etc? Qemu's curses display is cropped, i.e. menus and screens that would be full screen on a typical system are placed around 13 lines down from the top of your terminal, if running your terminal emulator full screen. If you press enter after loading FreeDOS, does anything happen? Do yu get messages about GemEx, CuteMouse, UDVD Drivers, etc? I have found that orca's flat review facility, i.e. caps lock plus i or numpad 8 to review current line is quite useful. If you are still getting blank lines, try running the DOS vm with yasr, which can be built from:git://git.code.sf.net/p/yasr/git, along with my custom PKGBUILD, which you can take the yasr.conf and yasr.sh out of to get speech-dispatcher working, at: https://nashcentral.duckdns.org/builds/yasrbuild.tar.gzFor refreence, I am running qemu version 5.1.0. Re: Genux OS: My thoughts
Re: Genux OS: My thoughts Hello, The name of the package for the pcs dos games is: freedos-accessibleThe direct link to the package file, installable through pacman, or easily pulled apart with your archiving utility of choice, tar on *nix systems, 7zip on windows, is:https://nashcentral.duckdns.org/package … pkg.tar.xzIf you extract this file, get the fdos.img out, under /usr/share/freedos_accessible/fdos.img, to start it under qemu with curses output, run:export QEMU_AUDIO_TIMER_PERIOD=1qemu-system-i386 --curses -soundhw pcspk,sb16 -netdev user,id=usernet -device ne2k_isa,irq=5,netdev=usernet fdos.imgTo make your own fdos.img, grab freedos 1.2, do an install using curses output with the full package selections because why the heck not, then grab talking dosbox, plus whatever you can get your hands on from the audiogames archive, which is where I got the PCS DOS games. The reason I do export QEMU_AUDIO_TIMER_PERIOD=1 is because these games rely heavily on timing based on data from the PC Speaker, which, if left at qemu's defaults, will not play any emulated PC Speaker beeps, or at least will play the beeps faster than the human ear can pick them up. The voice that jenux uses by default is BDL from rhvoice, which, as was previously stated, available from github, and I would imagine easily buildable on other distros as well. Re: Genux OS: My thoughts
Re: Genux OS: My thoughts Didn't understand those last few posts about installing packages and all that. I'm coming from almost no experience with command line or Linux, and almost no resources that I can find to actually learn how to work it. Not for lack of research, btw, it's just that the resources for how to do certain things with Linux are rather scarce imo. I even tried searching for training on command line in particular, no dice. I'd still love to run Genux, though. It seems like a well thought out OS. And thanks for that observation, Ironcross. Just because you bricked your computer doesn't mean I'll do the same, at least, that's my thought. It's a good thing I have a spare Panasonic Windows machine just in case I end up bricking it. The reason I'm thinking about running Genux is because it seems to me like it's very well built, and I don't have to deal with that damned gnome desktop. Hopefully. I've run Ubuntu, Ubuntu Bugi, Ubuntu Mate, (which I thought was elegant except for the damned Gnome desktop), Sonar, (which is being revived), and Accessible coconut. Just to give you some context. I'd love a tutorial on command line and how it actually works, I didn't grow up in a time when that was the main thing, so keep in mind I've actually got to learn it. Also, there are some great advantages with it such as it's much easier to install programs using command line on Linux rather than going through the GUI to do it. Anyway, enough rambling. But the question still remains, why was rhvoice confused? weren't the simlinks generated when scons read the file and built the targets? so why, then, was it looking for the wrong version? Re: Genux OS: My thoughts Wait... It can be built on ubuntu, and be made to work, too? If so, I haven't managed to do it successfully. Each time I try, I get an error or another, DK why. Bloody business that was, believe me, I don't want to go through no speech again ever in my life. So, can anyone recommend a way to proceed from there without all the horible stuff from before? Re: Genux OS: My thoughts
Re: Genux OS: My thoughts Really there is only so many options in the boot menu. Your linux distro is first, your fallback kernel one or two or something, then windows then enter setup. You can also configure it to have like a 5 second timeout which then defaults it to windows. That means that once you get an idea of how long it takes to reach the menu, all you need to is hit enter. But if you ever go down that road, I strongly recommend not using Jenux as your linux distro.
