Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

Thanks for correcting me about the Braille touch being a certified tablet. Both Humanware and Hims have made their own interface which should work, no matter what version of Android there is installed on the device. Both companies have made a screenreader, which interacts with apps as well, and some of the original Android features. The Braille Note TOuch is really slow, I have tried one. If I'm not mistaken, there are apps which don't run on Android 4, or runs faster on Android 5 and later.

Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

But here's the thing. With a braille and speech device, particularly one that needs braille and speech constantly, one that needs trusted braille support that doesn't break, the cutting edge code isn't always good. Look at the ups and downs some of these new versions of Android went through. But there are some accessibility problems that you just wouldn't notice because they don't effect speech-only devices as much, but they're there nonetheless. Far more serious issues can happen if those problems were brought into a braille device as well. So, being on the absolute latest version of Android isn't always a good thing. That said though, Android is a developer-friendly os, and they can, especially with Google's help, take some cutting edge code that can be trusted to work, and put  it right inside the older version of android. Things like the newest webview support. So, with that said, being on Kitkat isn't all that bad. Do I want t
hem to stay on Kitkat forever? No, and they won't. When they believe a major upgrade is warranted, they will take it. @slj, the Braillenote Touch is actually a Google-certified tablet. If you look at the supported devices list on Google you'll see Humanware in the manufacturers.

Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

Braille Note Touch don't seem to have been official certified by Google. Because of this, and because of the long time of development, they haven't upgraded the Android system on the device yet. I'm not sure if they are able to do that though. Personally, I would never rely on anything which such old an operating system. I'm not against the Braille Note Touch, I like the concept, but its downsides is just not for me...

Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

Well, the braille note touch is currently $300.00 cheeper, but it is running kitKat. It looks like it is the going price based on the braille note touch and the braille sense. I am a bit of a listener of the security now podcast. if that podcast is right, android has some problems. Some problems that these android based notetakers may have because of them being based off of android. That does kind of make you wonder...

Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

Well, just get a tablet then, and hook up a Braille display to it. Braille on Android with Talkback suck...Regarding upgrading, they'll upgrade the Android version later on. It's not as bad as the Braillenote touch which is running Android 4. Regarding the hardware specs, have you found tablets there are more powerful?

Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

@CW, wowww, that thing is eccessively overpriced, and it doesn't justify its price, whatever technology is being used on the device. Surely it is a Braille Display, but with those specifications, the tablet wouldn't cost more than 500 dollars. Since Polaris comes with Android Lollipop 5.1, I'm not sure how long will the device be upgradable. It should support at least up to Android 9.0 since it costs so much and it has all the latest features that users need. I believe it should have come with Android 7.0 as the accessibility is improved significantly from what I've heard and Talkback works more smoothly than it used to. Plus , the price, in my opinion should not have been higher than 3500 dollars. I wouldn't have bought it, neither way.

Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

Okay. Well, I might give all that a try if I ever get the device. Can I, somehow, install the stuck apps from Google if they aren't installed already? For example the mail app, which I assume is accessible out of the box. Checking my mail on the device will be important, and I'm not sure I like the mail app from Hims.Google Docs and the other Office apps made by Google works and are accessible on the Polaris, which sounds awesome if you need some alternatives for some reason. This is wear I could see the ctrl and alt keys being useful.Other than that, I'm not sure on what's possible with Android.

Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

I know that there are chrome books whitch are laptops with just the chrome browsers as the OS. I think that some of these cromes will soon be able, if not already, will be able to  run android apps when google gets around to adding that in. Of course these laptops are based off of linux, but no terminal as far as I know. Of course you can hack these in such away where you can run a per linux oS on them if you wish and know what you are doing. I also understand that you can side load apps on to android devices if you wish. This basicly means that you change a setting and load just about any app you wish. Of cource this means that you do not have to go through the google play store to load an app. Maybe you could side load a terminal app? I do not know how much use you will have if you do not have root access though. Plus android app, if I remember right, use a java like API. I do not know how much of a problem this would be for you. In short, Android is based off of linux, but
do not expect to run linux apps on it without some trouble. How much trouble, I can not tell you.

Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I know Android is designed for tablets and phones, but you can buy laptops with Android. Or, are those just big tablets with a keyboard? I haven't checked out all the apps for Android because there are so many, but it seems like you can get pretty much everything. It would be awesome to run a ps2 emulator, for example, or some small Windows programs, if there is such emulator for this. It sounds like everything is possible on Android if you know how to do it, but maybe I'm wrong?

Re: Hims Polaris: Android as a laptop

SLJ, I do not think that you can use the Linux terminal on this device, or at least it is not included as far as I can tell. You got to remember that Android was designed for tablits and phones. This is not to say that it is not based off of linux though. As I recall it is based off of linux. For the price, the BrailleSense Polaris is around $5795.00 if bought from hims here in the US.

The price is different depending on your local dealer. So you need to contact Hims directly, or contact your local dealer to get the exact price in your country. You can read much more about the device at the following link:https://hims-inc.com/braille-sense-series/
