Hi all, so i've tested the addon. I love the fact that it is a lot faster than the original one... probably because it makes use of synthizer.The only issue that i have, is that i can't make changes to the settings. I still want it to announce my buttons and links and headings, i guess that option is called "speak rolls", but i can check the check box. How ever, when pressing the "apply" or "ok" buttons, nothing seems to happen. the dialogs doesn't even close... I will give this a wait till it is improoved, but great work!

make sure that the version of Synthizer you've bundled matches the version of Python NVDA is built against.  This is the first potential problem, since presumably pip didn't help you get it in there.You might have deadlocks.  You might have a Synthizer crash.  NVDA from source is probably a good place to start but is a little tricky to get going.  Someone will probably need to connect a debugger to it and see where it's stuck at.There will be a number of stability/performance improvements in a couple weeks.  Probably nothing impactful for what you're doing, but who knows.

Hm... yeah, this is weird. NVDA's log (even when set to the highest level) shows nothing is going wrong. I wonder if maybe running NVDA from source would help as we could read Python's output?

Given that people are picking this up, bonus points if you get it working with speech refactor, which is why I stopped using Unspoken myself.Don't forget to schedule Synthizer shutdown using the atexit module.if there is an actual problem with Synthizer itself, and someone can confirm that, open an issue and I can work to address it. Note that I can't actually do releases right now, sadly, because a big confluence of factors all went wrong at once.  Basically Linux support plus I didn't do a good enough job making sure the repo was set up to allow branching releases.

Thanks for taking the initiative on this one.I believe there is a version of this, but using lav, for modern NVDA already. And the navigator object does play sounds, and it makes NVDA, actually, start? I'll find the link to that, and send it your way. Maybe we can test if Synthizer is in fact at fault here.

Hi,So I've gone ahead and done the initial groundwork for making this be a thing. What currently doesn't work are as follows.Sometimes, on my system NVDA just will not start. Setting the log to debug produces nothing useful. Not sure if it's a me thing or a synthizer thing.I'm not sure why, but the event_becomeNavigatorObject was throwing errors, and I'm a dummy and couldn't figure out why, so I commented it out, which means that if the navigator object changes position (E.G. in web pages, no sounds are played.)I'm also a dummy and don't feel like using git, so here's my add-on if anyone wants to try to use it or do anything with it:http://storage.masonasons.me/misc/Unspo … nvda-addon

In fact if you dig around, you can find issues where I tried to get them to redo their audio stuff to support these sorts of use cases and also I was one of the voices behind speech refactor to some extent as well.  Hopefully one day we can do this stuff without a resource cost.

I don't know what we mean by resource usage, but in general it's not possible to do these on top of audio libraries that weren't designed for the purpose without either incurring a penalty for trying to go through NVWave, which is terribly designed for the use case, or keeping the audio device open, which isn't so great for battery life.  If you can't offload to the synth or write something very dedicated to NVDA's use case, it's going to cost something to run it.Libaudioverse certainly didn't help matters, but it's only possible to do so well before you need to start getting out C/C++ yourself for the sake of the add-on if you want it to do things like always follow the NVDA audio settings, or be able to cleanly close the audio device.

Anytime I go to use something like this, it's five seconds of, "Oh cool", followed by like 30 seconds of, "Shit, it's laggy and sapping NVDA's performance", followed by the 10 seconds it takes to uninstall and restart NVDA.If it could be done without tremendous performance hits, I'd probably use it, if not, forget about it.

Potentially, but I'd have to ask what exactly the point of this would be? Judging purely from everything I've heard, and cam or anyone else feel free to correct me on this, but synthiser was mainly developed because of the bad / hacky code of LAV. So in terms of weather or not synthiser is better, they're most likely equal, actually LAV is probably better at the current moment due to synthiser's infancy.

The only thing it can't currently do that Unspoken did is feed NVWave, so i.e. the audio device is always open and it's the default audio device only.

yes, if you can get it working with the new NVDA speech stuff.  I eventually stopped developing Unspoken because it was a terrible hack that would just silence random links, but supposedly the new speech refactor landed and can at least somewhat handle that, and it would be cool to see an effort in that direction.
