GAAAH! I'm trying to beat the second map in the Getting Started pack and I just can't win! It's no fun being outnumbered two to one, especially when I keep being surrounded as soon as I let the enemy make their first moves, and then three of them attack one of my characters and that's it. I don't know how to win with this! I've tried using my fire-mage to power up the warriors' weapons, but although that kills a couple of beasts with a few rounds, there are still six others that are unharmed, and all eight can still attack! I can't spread everyone too far apart because then my healer can't heal anyone, and so I keep everyone close together and that's just asking to be hemmed in! AAH! *smacks head into desk*Other than this, I'm loving the setup so far, and it's given me interesting ideas for how battles could be in my own game when I start building it at a future stage—more the ability to choose which character in your party can attack than the turn-based thing because running out of AP is the. Worst.

Use your fire mage to attack multiple opponents at once, then use your warriors to finish them off. YOu do have a single turn at the beginning of the game where the enemies don't attack your guys; use this to power up your warriors, then go all out damage after that.

I've started playing the Age of Warlords maps—well, I'm still on the first one, but OH MY GRACIOUS THIS THING IS SO AWESOME.I'm still adjusting, however, and after the AI got the bad guys to build their Embassy on my turf, I realised I could just build my watchtowers on their side of the mountain range. Since my towers in the game I'd been working on for days were doing nothing because I was keeping the enemy backed up at the mountain pass, I decided to start a new game and try out my new strategy.So far, my towers have been wiped out before they could kill anything important and before they had a chance to upgrade. I really hate anti-paladins and enemy archers. And catapults that aren't mine.The biggest issue I'm currently having is that in my biggest game, although my dwelling's a city, I haven't even gotten close to the enemy dwelling to do any damage. Only a few of my army units have been fortunate enough to get enough experience to upgrade before they're wiped out—even the valkyries and dragons are being wiped out if I leave them unattended for even a turn. I put this down to not killing them with structures I'd put on the enemy's side of the mountain range early on, although there's a very good reason for this. My inn's also way too far away to be of any use at all because of the stupid fire arrows that kill my guys before they can use three or four turns worth of movements getting back to it. I just wanted it to be safe from enemy attack, but now I regret putting it where I did. I feel like I'm missing something really obvious here, but what am I doing wrong? The best I can do is keep the enemy from getting through the pass and I'm supposed to get to the enemy city to blow it up, aren't I?

Whenever you can recruit something, do it. And use control-shift-A to set units to AI controlled. THis is useful for the units that don't have special features like heavy infantry and light/heavy cavalry. Catapults are usually better left human controls, as are archers. Also, stack buffs on powerful units, such as catapults. If you stack like bless and ice blade on a unit that's an additional 4 points of damage, which can make a huge difference. Also use your catapults' take aim ability once they get within range, that adds another 3 extra damage to the attack.

 gions are excellent for holding a tile due to their enhanced fortify. Stack cleric protection on top of that and they won't be pushed off any time soon. Gnoll archers do devastating damage with their attacks and also have a range of 3 as compared to the 2 of normal archers. Vlkyries are useful only after buffs; they are basically like flying paladins. Generally they hit and run, but they are probably the least useful of the tavern units.

My third bard is somewhere in the middle of my ever expanding army. The last time I tried summoning any of the others they got killed before I got more than a couple of hits in. I do always check my buildings to see if the points are high enough to recruit something. I think I have about six clerics on my field right now but most of them are too far away to do anything atm. I have infantry/cavalry/archer/a few miscelaneous other units stacked three high about halfway back to my now citadel. There was a point where they were stacked up right to my door.*takes notes* I'll use your advice tomorrow, or whenever I get back on the game. That background music is going to be swirling in my head for hours as it is and I need a break.

Something odd I noticed. My Spell Tower is gaining platinum coins every round. It doesn't have any use for them. My Embassy, on the other hand, is not gaining platinum every round, despite the user guide stating that it should. I have to use the caravans to give it coins. Is this normal?

There's already NVDA support. Just press alt +o after you open the game and everything will be read by NVDA if you have it.  You have to do this every time you open the game, mind. It would be nice if we could set it to use our preferred screen-reader by default in preferences.

yes I know its a port of nentindo for I once had it.   though I can't see the game, it well, i'll just say wasn't nothing even from a visual perspective for sighted people I knew tried it.   I didn't care for it but, I tried the one that was dun from this perspective for a blind person such as myself to play to see if it was werth retrying.   um, well,   no comment.   but tell me this.   the tb title, does that game play in the same engine as the shadow gate nentindo port?

Just downloaded Kobold Dungeon, and started the first map. I've just beaten all the enemies in the immediate area, and now I'm stuck. The edge of the map is behind me, trees and tunnel walls are on either side of me, a giant pit of doom is in front of me and I CAN'T FIND ANY WAY TO GET PAST ANY OF THESE OBSTACLES HLP.

GAH WHY.I'm playing the Axis and Allies map in Age of Warlords, and I BLOODY CAN'T KEEP THE DIPLOMATS ALIVE LONG ENOUGH TO GET EVERYWHERE. I've tried getting my Maven to give them both the ability to fly for a bit, and that got one of them as far as the Centaur clan at the top left of the map, so he managed to get four places to sign up, but by the time I'd gotten him there, there was a friggin' troll and other really nasty enemies right around that area, and I tried summoning the centaur cavalry and shielding him as best I could, but he was one step away from the next stop when they killed him. I have restarted this map at least five times trying to get as far as possible with my diplomats. The Diplomacy skill says Bards can use it too, BUT IT'S NOT IN THEIR SKILL SET. i CHECKED. As if that wasn't bad enough, the lower right portion of the map has been over-run with hounds that kill eve
 rything before I get a chance to kill them off. There must be at least twenty of the wretched things and i DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET RID OF THEM ALL IT'S FREAKIN' RIDICULOUS SOMEONE H E L P.I have one living diplomat in the high elves' forest, but at this rate I don't know how long he'll last. Some hag and her cronies killed my lightning mage before he could do more than blast one of those stupid hound units that decided to cross the bridge and have at me. I am this close to restarting again and I'm starting to really hate this particular map.

Fixed a few bugs to make downloading map packs in game more solid.26. Fixed a bug where items that did not have an equip type requirement could not b

To switch to using screen reader support for NVDA press alt + O.If it doesn't seem to be reading, try alt tabbing away from the game window and back again.No NVDA dlls are required.

If you turn off the battle log then SAPI will read the enemy's actions.If you leave the battle log on then they will be read by your screen reader.I can not reasonably synchronize the playing of speech and sounds when playing multiple in a row and outputting to a screen reader because screen readers do not support any way to find out when the speech has finished.SAPI does provide this, which is why it gets used when the battle log is turned off.

for some reason when I started a map, the battle log was off and sapi was reading it for the initial turn. I'm really liking the update so far though, particularly as the map downnoader no longer results in interesting script errors when maps start.

@whocrazy, I just tested both and they work fine for me.Do you have anti virus software that might be stopping the game from looking at its files?Or have you placed the game somewhere that Windows UAC might be stopping it from accessing its files?You might try running it from a folder on your desktop.Or temporarily disabling your anti virus to see if that's the problem.

I am using windows xp sp3, and I have even disabled and uninstalled my antivirus and firewall software, and yet it still tells me after it downloads the zip file that it cannot find the needed text files author.txt or settings.txt in the map packs folder.

@whocrazy, Did you manually copy map packs into the game folder?Or have you been using the in game map pack downloader?Are you launching the game with a desktop shortcut, or running TacticalBattle.exe directly?Try a fresh unzipping of the game and only using the in game map pack downloader, and launching TacticalBattle.exe directly.If those things don't work then I'd like to see the current state of your Tactical Battle folder.If you can zip it up and give me a dropbox or sendspace link to download it that would work.

I used the in game map pack downloader and I am running the program directly in a folder.  Everything else works fine, I just can't download the map successfully.I mean, the file downloads and when it gets to 100% I get the error about the missing text files.I unzip the game into c:\battle.

yes I wish we could play online against and with friends. like I could be the good and an online friend could be the enemy. or you could do team player. hey this would be perfect! in tacticle battles3 online play where either 1. you are good and your friend is the enemy or 2. you do team play with a dota2 mod where you and a friend or some friends team up and make towns or towers at the bottom of the map and the enemy team makes towers and recruits archers and dragons and things at the top of the same map and then you all go at it all out war! oh and how about a call of duty map or lord of the rings, or how to train your dragon, or power rangers. in power rangers for example the command center is your base at bottom left of the map you start out as human. you fight putties and then you get to upgrade and become a power ranger with basic powers. then you upgrade to the other kinds of power rangers. and once you get so much experience you can then get zords and megazords and things.
  I love tacticle battle and I wish I would have tried it out earlier! Oh, and you could even do a deer hunting mod where your hunting cabin is base and you recruit archers and guys with guns to shoot deer which would be the enemy in that game.

[[wow]]. I've just had the chance to try this out with my Windows VM. I'm very impressed. I do wonder about some of the map packs though, they don't seem to have a lot of documentation. Age of Warlords seems to have a game mechanics file, but nothing else that I could find. It looks very cool though, almost civilization-like in style.THanks, Ian!

Curious as to the scope of this game. seems as though it's a waste only having AI opponents... or am I missing something? seems to be a server-based multiplayer system, or a simple p2p way for two people to play against each other would give this game a lot of depth and replay value. I, too, am wondering about the scope of this game. I'm interested in recreating the feel of a tabletop war-game, which tend to be pretty complex in terms of mechanics. I wonder there's a way to simulate line of sight, for instance. I guess I need to read the mapmaking guide and find some sounds.

Having issues with TB... the campaigns don't entirely download. It keeps telling me it can't find certain txt files. And I can't try and download them again once I've tried once, they disappear from the download map campaigns option. Even when I delete the folder from the map packs directory.

I think Ian has to set the server up. Multiplayer is supported, it's just disabled for some reason that I am not quite sure of. We were able to play it for a month or so with the old dev versions.

I was doing pretty well till I started on the warlord pack.  I love it, but there are so many units to keep track of. haha.  making some a.i controled doesn't help either, they keep walking into death.  Any tips?off to see if I can keep that lich in the first holdfast map alive past turn 1 as he can't move.

I think the lich being good was actually an oversight on allan's part, lol. He doesn't stay alive longer than like 2 or 3 rounds as far as I can do anything, but the good thing about him is while he is alive, the enemy units seem to like to surge toward him and therefore away from you, so you get some time to set up your units. And the fact that a lot of your units die is why you get so many. If you're losing light infantry and cavalry that's their goal in life. But you should try and keep archer units alive, especially if they are human or taran, because when upgraded, they really do good damage. War engines are good too.

Can we make suggestions for features we'd like to see in Tactical Battle here?Because I have a few...For effects:_only_affects_=, this will cause the effect to only work on the units in this list.does_not_affect=, the units in this list would be immune to these effects.I'd also like to see more flags for terrain.For example, something like the opposite of terrain_limit=. Like, can_not_pass_terrain=, where a unit can not pass through any terrain on this list, and it should work on non-flying units.I'm suggesting the terrain thing because it would make it easier to have, say, incorporeal beings such as ghosts that could travel through walls and such, and then barriers would have to be set up to specifically block them. It would make it much simpler, as opposed to needing to have a potentially long list of terrain that they can pass over.

hi, I've seen there is a map Editor in the game. now is it possible to expand this into a hole map creator instead of an edetor? such as, when you hit control n in the map selection menu, you get to choose the Name of the map, the hight and length, and then you would be put into the empty map. with keys, you could set up Terrains, Units, structchors, Background mmusic, and when creating a unit you could get a list box where you can add stuff with a add item button or something, and the standard Options move and unit Information would all ready be there. once you've finished adding moves, you could get another list box where you could enter the unit's stats such as health, mana, movement, Actions etc. then you could select ist sounds. the soudns would have too be in the sounds Folder before creating the unit, but maybe you can make it so that the game automatically creates the Folders as you start creating the map? because I don't really have the Motivation to f

The inherits flag only works with units right tnow.First you implement a base unit that has certain attributes you want other similar units to have.Then in the other unit files you have a line that says:inherits base unit nameAnd they automatically get all the flags you set on the base unit.You should also be able to override inherited flags by re-specifying them in the inheriting unit.Regarding moving more things from text into an in game editor:I've thought about this a lot in the past.I actually think a text editor is much easier to use than an in game editor for many tasks.For instance, when I'm adjusting a flag I can change it and then reload the map in the game.If I decide it needs to be slightly different I alt tab and change it in the text editor, then alt tab back and reload the map.If you could only change these values in game then it would be much more tedious to switch from the map all the wa
 y back to the map editor and then drill down to the correct unit and then change the property.Using text also allows you to comment things so you remember why you did them, or so you can test the game with a certain flag turned off, and then turn it back on again by uncommenting.Many people would prefer their favorite text editor over an in game text editor that doesn't work quite the way they like.Want to make a copy of my getting started map pack and just make some changes?Easy, just copy and paste the folder with a different name.Want a super assassin that is mostly like your normal assassin?Just copy and paste the file to the new name.Then adjust the flags in the new file.Interested in output telling you what files are different between 2 copies of a map pack?There are compare and diff tools that already exist for working with folders full of text files.Want to use a source control system?Also supported w

Apart from setting what items a unit might be holding in an individual map and possibly modifying a skillset in the same map while leaving them alone in the others, the text editor is great. (Mainly I'm worried about having too much on one line if editing a unit in a specific map, that's all.)

I had no idea anyone posted about this! But I'm glad to see people are excited for this.Yeah, you need the dev version to use features that are still in development. SO I should stress that this is still being worked on. I've already started work on dev 7. The map packs and scripts included are also being worked on by their respective authors. As such, the game doesn't get shipped with any multiplayer map packs, mostly because this has only just gone to map pack creators. I'm working on one myself, but I realized I need a few more features to be done first.If you look under the "download a map pack" option, you should see some map packs that are ready to go. Not all support multiplayer yet. It's up to the map pack author to make it so, if it's appropriate.@connor142, that sounds like you both had different settings for your battle log. Under preferences, you can choose whether to read out actions as they happen, o
 r to list them out in the battle log at the end of a turn. I suspect you and he both have different settings. I could've gone for one set experience for multiplayer, but I decided to respect people's choice in this. Maybe I should put something about it in the user docs.

Just stopping here to say that Tactical Battle with Online Multiplayer is a dream come true. TB is a brilliant board engine, really easy to understand and create maps and whole games with it, but the restriction of not allowing online duels was very frustrating. Now I foresee myself spending again nights over nights playing and editing maps to play with my friends.For all of you involved in this feature, my most sincere thanks, you gave Tactical Battle, this great game, a brand new soul.

No one has officially said on list that their map has been made to either support multiplayer or has made one explicitly for it. Like I said, this release was really to get map developers making maps for it. That being said, Age of Warlords I can imagine is really good for it. I'm not sure if it supports it yet though.

Any map can be played multiplayer (unless it breaks somehow, but they shouldn't.)Just go to the map pack directory, open map pack settings.txt and add the word multiplayer to its own line after the load_scripts line.

@vcaparica: If you press ctrl+F1 in game, it will bring up the user guide. If you look under the other guides heading, there's a map making guide by Ian, that's pretty much where me and all the other map pack creators started. Maybe with the battle log on, you could at least have the sound of the skill your opponent used play if the source unit used the skill on a target that you could see, so you could see that your opponent was attacking you. It's better than having to just sit still and wait, not knowing whether your opponent is even playing.

truecraig, it happens after the opponent chooses a ship. for example on multiplayer duel. just try to test it with someone and do the same.well, about the battle log) if it's on, the game freezes fully till it's your turn. you can make us able to look at the map or to chat, because the game doesn't even allow to send a message and it also doesn't receive them. we don't even hear when someone's logged off. and that makes me feel it's crashed, i'm out of the game and out of the server... horrible feeling
