Re: disabling auto gain on the Olympus LS P4

What gets me is that there haven't been any appreciable improvements over the years. It's just as garbage as it ever was.

Re: disabling auto gain on the Olympus LS P4

It absolutely will not stop it. If you're recording in high wind, you're most likely trying to capture the wind, i.e. it's the main focus, or it's supplementary. Otherwise, use a windscreen.

Re: disabling auto gain on the Olympus LS P4

Auto will keep you from hearing anything, full stop. It will lower the entire gain. That, doesn't really help anyone in my opinion. The only time I can see this being useful is if, say, you're trying to record a loop of an environment on low where there won't be any sudden noises, in which case having the algorithm automatically determine a suitable gain might actually be a good idea.

Re: disabling auto gain on the Olympus LS P4

What if you're recording in a loud or windy environment? Auto will keep you from hearing all the wind noise and any other noises that would make the recording sound all distorted.

Re: disabling auto gain on the Olympus LS P4

Auto isn't good in any situation, ever. I don't recommend using it. It sounds like shit.Yeah, I've heard some interesting preamp hiss. I have a device that has this odd sinusoidal filter sweep through it's preamp hiss.

Re: disabling auto gain on the Olympus LS P4

well, a low gain has the disadvantage that the microphone preamp kicks in and usually gets pretty noisy, especially in cheaper devices like the Olympus. If that wasn't the case, we would always lower the input gain as much as  possible, because we could just boost it up within the DAW no problem. Thats why we can actually control the gain whatsoever, and thats the reason why auto gain is there. It enables us to record situations with varying levels, like a new year's party, because the gain automatically adjusts as soon as a very loud noise appears or a comparably quiet environment comes up. As soon as you can expect the volume of the environment to stay pretty stable however, its encouraged to disable auto gain, measure the proper gain settings yourself and record the situation with the same gain during the entire time to get the best results. It always depends on the situation. But I guess thats already common knowledge here.

Re: disabling auto gain on the Olympus LS P4

Gain is basically the level of your input, volume is the level of your output. When we're working with audio and adjusting levels, we can choose to amplify the signal from the mic. When we don't do this, and the signal going to the output stage is the same as the signal from the input stage, this is known as unity gain or nominal gain (older term). The volume is purely adjusting the loudness of the output. It is not related to gain. When we record, we generally want to lower the input level because it reduces the probability that we'll peak or clip the signal. Remember, we can always turn it up in our editor or DAW, but unless you have very expensive software, you can't de-clip it.I don't know why autogain is a thing, but I think it's a terrible idea. Maybe it gives people who have never worked with audio before the chance to record something and have it sound halfway decent, except it doesn't work. Often, one cough or sneeze from someone will duck the audio so much that it causes it to take 5 seconds to come back up to where it was. Not only is this jarring, but maybe you miss some of the conversation.

Oh duh. I thought recording level effected how much the microphone picked up, not volume.

Re: disabling auto gain on the Olympus LS P4

I don't have the LS-P4, but the LS14, and that one has a wheel on the front which controls the actual recording mode. Automatic or Quick options do have autogain enabled, manual allows you to control the gain yourself and will disable autogain entirely. I however don't know if the LS-P4 has such functionalities too somehow.
