Re: my virtual machines

The windows 3.1 vm is actually easy to set up, provided that, in windows 7, you run in driver test mode. This will allow you to run the com0com driver that is, keep in mind it is not a signed driver which is why you must run in driver test mode. As for mac I'm not sure, the only thing to do at this point may be to get the tweeked dosbox running windows 3.1.

Re: my virtual machines

Virtual machines are simpler than DOSBox? Really? Please explain. As far as I can see VMs are an improvement! Well, as long as you keep the CPU core count to 1, anyway. What about software synth under DOS? Is "Smooth talker" also a Windows-only construction, using SSIL? Perhaps what we really need to make this project complete is a Keynote-SA-compatible synth emulator, if only I had the escapes; then we could run Master Touch. Or maybe I will implement a Dolphin Apollo II, so we can run Hal5 or Hal Lite.I miss the old days, too, and especially DOS and Windows 3.11. But I have to admit to feeling fairly lost and confused at this point. It seems to me rather tragic that we are going to such depths to relive the irretrievable past ...Then again, the one thing DOS had going for it was BIOS interception. Because of that, playing interactive fiction was perfect, all the time. Perhaps that is one reason to do this, really, and preserve it. Who knew that we c
ould move forward by going back?

Re: Virtual machines, ISO's, and disk cloning

@leibylucwgamerRe question 1:  Depends on what you mean by accessible. The GUI of VMWare Player/Workstation/Fusion is very accessible and you can do almost everything with NVDA, Jaws or Voiceover. But the GUI of Oracle Virtualbox is not very accessible and if you have no particular reason for using Virtualbox, you'll better stay with VMWare's solutions. However, if you don't fear reading documentation and the commandline, I'll say that Virtualbox and VMWare   are equally accessible provided you know what you are doing.Re question 2: An iso file is just an image of the contents of a cd, dvd and in the context of virtualization an iso is often used to jumpstart the installation of the operating system in a virtual machine. You can use VMWare's Easy Install feature to install a new operating system like Windows or Linux in a virtual machine by directing the program to an iso containing the boota
ble operating system.Re question 3: Yes, you can in fact clone a physical installation of an operating system to a virtual machine and Vice Versa. This process is often called p2v or v2p and is a standard function of many commercial products. But you may also do it by hand.Let's say that you have a physical installation of Windows you need to use inside a virtual machine.Yes you can, but first you must know which machine architecture i.e X86 or X64 is supported by the physical and virtual hardware. If your physical installation of Windows is 64bit, you must virtualize it in a 64bit virtual environment by creating a VM with similar parameters. Also is the hardware controller of the harddisk or SSD hosting the operating system IDE or SCSI.It's very important that you understand these concepts. And finally what is the Hardware Abstraction layer on the physical and virtual hardware?Windows XP, 7 and 8.1 may
react differently if moved from one physical to a virtual hardware configuration, and unless you know what you are doing, it's easy to mess up something. However keep in mind that such a conversion physical>virtual or virtual>physical may trip up Windows activation or software DRM.But with all these caveats, yes you can.I have just succeeded in creating a Windows To Go of Windows 8.1 which I booted successfully on different computers -- a brand new computer with 16GB ram and I7 processor and and old netbook with an Atom processor. You don't need Windows 8.1 Enterprise to create a Windows To Go.It can be created from any version of Windows 8.1.A Windows To Go can host the same applications as a full OS like Jaws, Office and yes even Itunes.Who needs Levtec Winstaller when you can do it yourself for free :-)

Virtual machines, ISO's, and disk cloning

Hello all,It's been quite some time I've been on this forum.Anyhow, I wanted to know about some computer-related things involving what the subject line indicates...I saw a post on here about virtual machines, but I thought it best to not clog up that thread by asking a question not directly related to the topic.  My questions are:1. What virtual machine software is accessible?2. How do you create and use ISO images?3. Is it possible to take a copy of a configuration on a hard drive and image it onto an ISO file?  I've heard of companies doing this for business reasons, but I wasn't sure about its legality for personal use...I was working with Oracle Virtual Box, but had no such luck.Any help would be great on this!Best Regards,Luke

Re: my virtual machines

Did you press ctrl+g before you pressed ctrl+alt+del? Also, What is the menu option you are talking about.Sadly I don't know the commands for ibm desktop reader. Ibm desktop reader was bundled with ibm homepage reader.

thanks. I was wondering that ever since hard disk mode was removed in VMware player. hard disk mode allowed the vm to be used as a disk drive.

Re: my virtual machines

@ammericandad2005You can set up a ftp/web  server on the host OS and use an ftp client/web browser  from within the  guest OS to transfer files. If you need to transfer an entire folder structure, use an old Windows 98 compatible version of Winzip/Winrar  to pack the folders.

Re: my virtual machines

To power the vm off, press ctrl+alt, alt+f4, and press the power off button. It won't damage the vm at all. The way I share files between windows 7 and windows 98 is by putting the files I want in an iso image.

IBM desktop reader...that one sounds really obscure. Are you going to eventually make a win 3.1 or win 95 vm with winkline?
