Re: text-based games and screen readers

I found an open world text-based game which apparently uses the keyboard, so I've commented. There's also a sort of Eamon successor on there where you'll be able to eventually go through different worlds as the same character and even make your own, but again, not accessible. I tihnk that one's called hypoglyph. However, I've commented on those games asking about screen reader access, mentioning tolc and such.

Re: text-based games and screen readers

Kenshira is correct here. A lot of games, even if their interface is text either use funky programming environments that do not render the text in a standard way a screen reader can pickup, or alternatively, simply use graphical representations of the lettered text, especially if created using canvasing, IE, using the image and different parts of the screen as interactions for the program, rather than having the program write actual text to the screen, EG instead of writing the words "start game" in a game menu, having the developer just create a page in their favourite graphics development program with the words "start game" as an image, and having the game react when you click on that part of the screen. This is how a lot of games created with game maker work, and yeah, it's annoying. Whether screen reader ocr will get to a point where it can handle such things regularly enough to play games I'm not sure.

Re: text-based games and screen readers

Part of it depends on the engine in which the game is constructed. I ran into plenty of text games on android that should have been playable, but aren't because the screen reader doesn't recognize the text in the engine. I would imagine that it is the same for all other platforms.

Re: text-based games and screen readers

When I think of text based games, I think of games in the console. So I'm honestly not sure...

text-based games and screen readers

Hi all,Please hear me out here as I don't exactly know how to word this topic title.I'm asking, from a literal standpoint, what a text-based game is.Because, here's the thing.I am browsing Itch, and I'm noticing some really promising, so-called, text-based games. Yet, if these games are text, why can't a screen reader, a program literally designed for reading text, actually make head or tail of some of these? I've commented on several games now. So I'm asking: what is, a text-based game, and why can't screen readers, read all text-based games? What will it take to change this?
