[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: How to test linear power supply

2006-12-02 Thread adamslim

I decided that I needed to sort this blind testing debate out once and
for all. Therefore, this morning, I undertook the following test:

I prepared two slices of bread. I used vernier callipers to ensure
that the thickness of each slice, in each of the four corners, was
1.20cm. The bread used was Sainsbury's seeded granary. It took
seventeen slices to get them accurate, but they were from the same
loaf. The slices were toasted for 74 seconds on one side.

The grill used was an electric AEG, with the standard grill-pan.
Electricity was Ecotricity.

Onto these slices I placed cheese of 4mm thickness. It was Sainsbury's
Taste the Difference Davistow Cheddar, placed completely evenly. I then
toasted the cheese for 58 seconds. The crusts were cut off to ensure
that there was no texture pattern difference between the slices.

Finally I spread sauce onto each slice. On one slice I used Heinz
Tomato Ketchup; the other slice was Daddies brown sauce. I used a
solid silver knife, rinsing with filtered water between sauces.

For convenience, I shall refer to the resulting cheese on toast with
sauce as CoTwS

I then blindfolded the wife (who had not seen any of the preparation or
the resulting CoTwS), and placed a slice in each of her hands. She had
earlier used a random number generator to prepare a pattern of how she
would feed the CoTwS to me. I then blindfolded myself.

(It was important that this would be double-blind, as I know that the
wife has a curious aversion to ketchup, and may influence the results
by emitting negative vibes as I took a bite.)

The wife fed me the slices in the predetermined order, and I called out
Brown or Red to the neighbour, whom we'd had to enlist as we were
both blindfold. From the unsighted safety of the hall, she wrote them
down.

I am happy to report that I managed to get the right sauce in each case
except one. The one I got wrong was towards the end, and I suspect that
I was getting a bit CoTwS-ed out by this stage.

However, I am still not sure which I found more satisfying. I
definitely felt there was more zing with the Daddies, but could I live
with it? The ketchup is definitely sweeter and more rounded. There
seemed to be a pizzoid synergy between the CoTwS with tomato; it seemed
classically right, whereas the brown sauce was an aggressive teenager,
knuckling in with its astringency.

I am fortunate in that I can have two sauces in my house. Lesser
mortals, those who don't have such sensitivity to the difference
between sauces, have to make a choice. On balance I'd go for the
ketchup, but could I live with Daddies? Sure; I'd have just the
occasional hankering for the balance of the ketchup.

You neglected to mention the type of containers which held each sauce.

While they were both plastic, so there should be no quantum
electrolytic issues, the ketchup stands on its lid, while the Daddies
is the right way up. I am concerned that the quality of the air inside
will have a serious effect, and don't even mention the thick gloop that
accumulates around the lid of the Daddies.

However, this was a test 'as is', of the 'stock' sauces. Were I to
apply tweaks to get round these deficiencies, I wouldn't be comparing
what people actually buy - who wants a comparison of one tweaked sauce
with another? Maybe I could do an 'ultimate sauce-out', to demonstrate
what really can be achieved based on these supposedly humble condiments,
but I think the tests are valid as they stand.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Good entry level speakers

2006-12-02 Thread richidoo

Infinity makes some great speakers for very low price. They are always
very well reviewed. Before I got into hifi, I used them throughout my
house in different sizes. Now that I have some audiophile speakers, I
still find the Infinity designs to be solid and great sounding. They
all still get a lot of playtime.

Models with CMMD ceramic drivers are excellent. This used to mean the
Alpha or Entra series which are now discontinued. If you can find these
used, you will not be dissappointed. The larger the better.

Newer (largest) models are the Beta 50 ($600/pr)with the great CMMD
drivers and the Primus 360 ($400/pr), both have received excellent
reviews by many different critics. The Beta is identical to Revel F12,
per article in AudioExpress, or was it Sensible SOund? Revel and
Infinity are owned by Harmon International and they use the same
Infinity developed drivers, while cabinet and crossover maybe slightly
different. Anyway Sensible sound still mentions these as best choice
for a sub $1000 system. Read the reviews, and try a pair at home. Since
they are sold by mass merchandisers, the return policy is always
generous. Primus is at Crutchfield and elsewhere, Beta used to be on
display at Circuit City, who is still listed as authorized dealer, but
they don't have them on the website anymore. You could call a store to
see if there are some left. Infinity website lists local dealers and
online sellers.

For the money, I don't think there is a better option. Spending less on
mid fi speakers will allow you to buy truly hifi speakers sooner. There
you will want to skip over the hifi pretenders and go for a really
great speaker to build your system around. That will take an investment
in time and money, but the beta will serve you well until that time.

Even with the speakers you have now, you can improve your music
listening experience greatly buy learning about acoustics and taking
steps to improve the main listening room with acoustic treatment. Read
articles at realtraps.com and ETFsoftware.com to get started. Acoustics
do more to color the sound your hear than anything in the actual system.
Getting the room right first will help you pick the best speakers for
the money because you will actually be able to hear what they really
sound like and get the most out of them.

Anyone who cares about the quality of sound of their music is an
audiophile, so you are very welcome here!!

Have fun, trust your heart over any critic, reviewer, salesperson or
internet forum expert! Pick up some discs that are audiophile quality
recordings and listen to them at your local stereo shop to get an idea
what is possible. There is a lot of free education available online.
Audioholics.com is a good website for beginner audiphiles and for
mid-fiers. They have a bias against high end big bucks products, which
is healthy. But you do have to pay to play in this hobby, so if your
taste goes to perfection, you will be spending money in the high end
eventually, it is most definitely worth it!

If you don't mind not having brand new things, going used at that price

I agree with highdudgeon about the spendors as well (I had a pair of

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Interesting Transporter review at Soundstage AV

2006-12-02 Thread Jez

http://www.soundstageav.com/onhifi.html

I know this is shameless self-promotion, but this review struck me as
approaching what we're about so well that i wanted to ensure it got the
widest coverage for folks considering a Transporter purchase.

It's nice to hear the following from an 'objective' source;
The Slim Devices Transporter marks a shift in the way we audiophiles
play music, and I believe it signals the death of the CD transport. In
fact, I think someone would be foolish to spend much money on a CD
transport today.

I'm hoping we can have a couple of reasonably high-end Transporter
set-up's at the Open House next Friday if anyone wants to confirmation
that we can 'walk the walk' ;-)

Myth??? Hah!

Cable burn-in is critical for cables that have been cryogenically
treated. The burn-in is necessary to warm up the cold sound
produced by the cryogenic treatment. That way, you get a nicely
defrosted sound.

Alternatively, you can just let your cables sit on the kitchen
countertop for a few days.

Careful, this time of year the FDA spends a lot of time and effort
reminding people that defrosting turkeys and cables on the kitchen

better to defrost it in the refrigerator for longer, a week or so.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Room Correction/EQ available for mac users NOW

2006-12-02 Thread highdudgeon

Seriously -- I've been looking into this and it works. Here are the
steps:

One of the most advanced RCS systems out there is Acourate. I've had a
sample of this recently, after sending impulse reponse files, along with
uncompressed music files, to the developer for processing. The
resulting changes were amazing -- and the match to the target curve,
the intelligent use of windowing, etc., just work. Many TacT users are
familiar with the software.

Anyway, Acourate can export a filter that will work with Inguz. Now,
Acourate and Inguz are PC-based, right? Problem? Not if you're
willing to upgrade to the new Macs.

I had a long discussion with an Apple developer today. He confirmed
that one could run OSX and Windows at the same time (we already knew
this) and exploit Parallels. The result is that you can:

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Room Correction/EQ available for mac users NOW

2006-12-02 Thread highdudgeon

Uli, the developer, is a nice guy and will respond to your emails -- he
can address the technicalities in a more satisfactory way. But, yes,
the idea is to address time domain adjustments, etc. He was a Tact
user and went on from there. I am not a Tact user and won't comment on
the relative merits...but drop him a line!

Great post highd. Thanks! I read the Acourate website, never heard of
them before. If it can come close to the Tact preamp I tried, wow! Does
it do time domain adjustments to help with room resonance, or just
speaker driver alignment? I couldn't understand half the stuff the
website is talking about - I know RC sounds good, but I don't know the
 lingo.
 Thanks
 Rich

But when it comes to sound quality though, frozen or thawed, I prefer my

What difference in sound do you hear between the BJ/Belden and the
anti_ic?

A friend of mine actually looked into this. The wire, available
commercially, costs pennies a foot when you buy by the 100lb load.
Thing is, 100lbs is quite a bit of copper and many, many feet. I've
heard a system with the speaker cables and thought they were just fine.
Then again, I think my 10 gauge cables from BJC are just fine. I'll
give the anti-IC's this -- they win the prize for cool-looking cables,
hands-down.
