only the transporter supports 24bit/96KHz. The squeezebox is max 24bit/48Khz and frames will be skipped in order to chop the 96KHz down to 28KHz. So if you want to play linn records stuido masters properly buy a transporter. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Flac or Apple Lossless?
Thanks Mark that answers my question. Rips are pretty quick with dBpoweramp Reference in one pass when AccurateRip verifies the data. The discs that I have put in which are not recognised are, as you say, probably a different pressing. In this situation the software falls back on the Ultra Secure rip and multiple passes, still reporting the AccurateRip error at the end. So, I should in conclusion, gain reliable rips... The flatness control in the inguz plugin will make the curve closer to the original response or the target, depending on how you set it. If you choose the flat target, it will indeed make it closer to flat. I understand that the various txt files are the target curve profiles, and that each of the drc files has one defined (usually the one called - I think - b3_spline.txt, but not always). I guess what I meant to ask is - if I leave the b3_spline curve in normal.drc, and Hugh's instructions are right, there should be normal.wav and normal_direct.wav compensation files created, with the second one effectively being the flat version of normal. Is this what actually happens? I may have missed it, but your first post to this thread suggested (I think) replacing the target with flat.txt, but I may have misunderstood. Which one did you use, and did you only replace it in the normal.drc file, or all of them? totoro;203224 Wrote: I haven't created new filters in a long time, so I don't know if there are new problems, but I never saw error messages like the ones you had. Using Phil's music he could reliably hear a difference, whereas I would have been guessing. However that DAC is the only digital source I've owned that I could distinguish from others, mainly due to the fact that it distorts when plugged into some amps. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35068 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Available on the black market in 5 years: - normal flow shower heads - incandescent lights - linear PSUs - CDs Penny-wise and pound-foolish regarding the linear PSUs. Ever seen how many lights remain on at all times in government offices? Turn those off first before banning linear PSUs. The world is going nuts over this stuff and focusing on the small and useless things rather than tackling the big things. There's also a lot of FUD out there. No doubt the EU will be jumping on the bandwagon, as they did with a timetable to ban sales in incandescent lights. Fools. I believe the EU already has efficiency rules for power supplies and EU supplies typically have much better Power Factor profiles than US supplies for that reason. According to Wikipedia, the EU regulation only applies to switching supplies. As I understand it, efficiency isn't just good green (lower energy demand) design, it's also better for the power utilities' gear. Given the same actual power demand, the utilities would rather have a larger more efficient device on the grid than a smaller, less effcient one. With switchers being lighter, cheaper, and more efficient, I don't expect any typical electronics vendors would bother with linear supplies, so legislators could achieve 99.99% of their objectives by leaving an exemption for power-hungry linear supplies. -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ free plugins: http://www.tux.org/~peterw/#slim BlankSaver BottleRocket FuzzyTime SaverSwitcher SleepFade StatusFirst VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35430 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The best audio stuff is the stuff you make yourself, and they can't ban that, so it's no big deal. I'm not sure that linear supplies are better anyway. They are big and heavy in addition to being inefficient. Maybe the power line frequency should be boosted to 100 kHz instead. Power transformers would shrink and smoothing caps in supplies would be smaller. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Vanished
I had one of thoses aha! moments that I am compelled to share. I've put about 300+ hours on my new Vandersteen 3A Signatures by now and I've noticed something peculiar lately. My listening position is about 13' with speakers toed to intersect about 2 from the back of my head while listening. From my Transporter, a BK r200.2S1 delivers 16/44.1 flac @200wpc to the 3A's. The BK does well and has a bit warmer sound than most SS amps I've had. Today, while listening to Blue Chip Orchestra - White River Red Spirit, I happened to open my eyes just as the Vandy's were disappearing. Poof! Gone! All that was left was a field of incredible 3 dimensional texture. The sound consumed the entire listening room and transported (pun?) me to a space where there was no up or down, in or out, front or back. The music was as tall as it was wide as it was deep. I could actually reach out my hand and touch where the flute was emmanating from, as well as the sound of the river coarsing by...I could feel the cool of the mist wafting at my nose. I may never leave my house again. If there is one here who is contemplating new speakers in the $3K range, I implore you to not let these incredible transducers slip by unnoticed. krochat;203381 Wrote: Well, any room correction system will work, but Inguz is the least expensive. I use Acourate to generate filters for both Inguz and the TacT RCS. They sound somewhat different, and Inguz should be more accurate since it has more filter taps than the TacT unit. I've been using Inguz exclusively lately. Ideally, room correction subtracts the room from the reproduction, leaving you with just the recording venue. In practice, the improvement depends on the source material, speaker placement, room dimensions, etc. The primary benefit is in the bass reproduction. Without room correction, bass may vary with frequency by up to 20 dB - hardly high fidelity. In my room, the 3a's measure +/- 6 dB from 30Hz to 300Hz without correction, and are within +/- 2 dB with correction. A secondary benefit is the ability to do tonal shaping to correct for too-bright recordings, etc. The sonic improvement is better definition in the bass and a more three-dimensional reproduction of the soundstage. Some users miss the bass boom and think that the corrected sound is bass-shy. Of course, you can change the correction curve to add as much bass as you like back - it will still be better-defined than without correction. I went for Acourate last fall since it would also generate TacT RCS filters, and at the time Inguz had a bug in the convolver that has since been fixed.
