Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linn Records now doing FLAC
I will have to do some tests at 44.1 kHz and compare 16 bit files to 24 bit files at the same sample rate. For content, I have been downloading 96 88.2 kHz material from Linn Records, and then down-sampling it to 48 kHz - the result sounds fabulous. For test tones, I have been using Audacity to make my own test files, and there are some sites on the web that provide such files as well. I am certain at this point that 48kHz-24bits is greatly preferred over 44.1kHz-16bit (to my ears and brain.) I was thinking it was the sample rate that provided the improvement, but maybe not. I am changing two variables together, and need to do some more testing where only one of those two variables is changed and the other is held fixed. -Ron -- Ron F. *Squeezebox setup:* wireless SB3 - CI Audio VDA.2 DAC + VAC.1 PSU *Main rig:* NAD 7600 + NAD 2600A - Phase Tech PC-6.5 speakers *Headphone rig:* Headroom Max - Sennheiser 650s *Other stuff:* NAD C542 CDP, NAD 6300 Tape, Monster 5100 Power conditioner, Outlaw Audio cables Ron F.'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5616 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34985 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] First shot at using Inguz
So thanks to Hugh I was able to get past the problem I was having with DRC generating the correction files from my room sweeps. I generated two sets of files: one set with the default target curves and a second with the targets replaced with flat.txt. I also used the normal.drc on Hugh's website and the right mic cal file (I use a Behringer ECM8000). I'm attaching the response curve taken from the Measured Impulse sweep, and the Test Convolution for the one I wound up selecting for my first experiment (this one was from the normal_direct WAV filter using flat.txt). Now, if the Measured Response file is right, you can see that my uncorrected room response is not so bad above 300Hz, but gets pretty nasty down low. The selected correction curve, again assuming all inputs were proper, shows a pretty decent response down to about 30Hz. So that's why I decided to try it. Guess what? I didn't care for it at all. Sounded thin and bleached, not real. I played around, randomly selecting other correction filters, and did find a couple that sounded interesting. But I gave up on real long term critical listening today because my ears are a little blocked, thanks to allergies. (BTW, my standard for what sounds real is regular attendance at classical and acoustic jazz performances for the last 5 years at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia). So the questions I have for longer term users of Inguz are: are the convolved Test responses a reasonably accurate prediction of the modified room response? Are there any tips from others who have taken a careful look at the test responses to suggest how to interpret them? +---+ |Filename: selected_filter.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2870| +---+ -- tonyptony tonyptony's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35615 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] First shot at using Inguz
I have not used Inguz DRC, though one of these days I hope to try it out. In the past, I have used equalization to flatten the frequency response in the room, and I did find that it took some listening over time to get used to the flatter response. In my initial A-B tests I liked the uncorrected sound better. After listening to the flatter sound for a few weeks and doing an A-B, I liked the flatter sound better. Your mileage may vary, but you may wish to listen for a few weeks and then see what you think. -- jeffmeh jeffmeh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3986 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35615 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I'm now at a point where I can't stand the sound of my system without inguz. After using it for quite a while I've become very attuned to frequency domain distortions, so much so that they really jump out at me on uncorrected systems, or on speakers without very well-adjusted crossovers. I was recently at the HE show here in NYC, and one of the more interesting things I discovered is how incredibly bad a $100,000+ system can sound. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] First shot at using Inguz
I would think a flat targeted response is not going to be nice to listen to. When you make a targeted curve I would suggest a rise in the bass under for instance 100 hz. With a flat targeted curve you will hear no bass at all. I would concentrate on the suckouts and peaks first Your curves are very flat over 160 hz, a bit unsual, how did you do this ? -- Anne Squeezebox 3 Stereovox XV2 Bryston B100-DA SST Martin Logan Aeon I Sennheiser HD580 Precision Anne's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35615 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Not sure, really. That's just how they measured out with the provided sweep signal (I followed the instructions so I'm sure it was done correctly). I do have a very open room architecture, so there may be less interaction as the frequencies get higher.
