Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] First shot at using Inguz

2007-09-23 Thread krzys

I think that the editing of the target curve and the limitation of the
filter frequency range can be easily done using the Audiolense software
from www.juicehifi.com . This software generates RC filters and has a
very nice user interface.
The target design is much easier than with DRC since the curve is
visible.
I tried the beta version and will buy the program, no affiliation.
Chris

PS Just after I sent my post I saw that Inguz already pointed to this
software. sorry for duplication.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] TacT vs. Transporter

2007-09-23 Thread emilioforte

I currently use my squeeze box with an aging McIntosh preamp and amp.
Speakers are Sound Labs.

I've been thinking about using a TacT system to optimize my room and
speaker situation. It is an active family living room and far from
ideal.

However, it would require a digital output from the Squeeze Box as the
unit I'm considering has only digital inputs.

I'm wondering: has anyone compared a Squeeze Box digital out into a
TacT to a Transporter? Apples and oranges?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] TacT vs. Transporter

2007-09-23 Thread mdconnelly

I've got an Aberdeen modded Tact 2.0s and have compared a stock SB3
digital out into the Tact vs a stock Transporter digital out into the
Tact. No question that the Transporter is a step up (more relaxed,
defined, less edgy) compared to the SB3 but, in my opinion and to my
ears, not enough better to warrant the significantly higher price. I
bought the SB3.

I will say that the SB3 digital out into the Tact is definitely better
than the analog out of the SB3.

If you do pick up the Tact, definitely check out the mods from
Aberdeen. It may be that you might not hear the differences between SB3
and Transporter with a stock Tact.

any clocking information from the source and use the Master-Clock from

of jitter (assuming the clock in the DAC is a good one).

I'm thinking about using either a Squeezebox or Transporter with a dCS
Purcell/Delius combo, so AES/EBU out and Word Clock in appear to be the
main (only?) reason(s) to fork out the extra dough for a Transporter -
will that feature make enough of a difference to justify doing so?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DRC/Inguz and Microphone Calibration

2007-09-23 Thread muski

Glad that seeing my calibration file was helpful. There are some others
around that show a similar response curve, though none seem to be as bad
as mine (out by more than 9db).

Gotta admit a professionally calibrated mic would come in handy, who
knows what else dwells on these recordings.

I have exactly the same feeling. After using Inguz for a few months, I
have more and more faith in DRC and less and less in my recording gear.
I just have this feeling that my ECM8000/Tascam122L aren't up to the
task. My suspicion is that virtually any mic can record well enough to
do the phase correction, but that you need something professional to get
good frequency response correction (even a Radio Shack SPL). So, I have
an Earthworks M30 microphone and a Sounds Devices USB Pre audio
interface coming this week. The M30 is supposed to be +/- 0.5 db, and
for another $50 you can call Earthworks with the mic's serial number
and get them to email a custom mic cal file.

I'll remeasure and post my results here when I have a chance.

If I don't get anywhere with my M30, I'll try your mods to the mic cal
file!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Someone tell me I am crazy!

2007-09-23 Thread tyler_durden

I say this from experience: you ARE crazy.

Carbon fiber cloth is made up of tows that have typically 3,000
much-finer-than-hair fibers. Handling the cloth invariably causes some
of the fibers to break and they are so light they will waft into the air
and easily get into your eyes, stick into your skin, and be inhaled. I
have had the itch from getting them on my skin and the coughing fits
associated with inhaling the flying fragments. I thought I was going
to cough up a lung.

Oh yeah, CF is electrically conductive. Those little flying fiber
fragments will land on your circuit boards and get into connectors and
switches and short things out. You will be lucky if your equipment
continues to work at all.

If you have ANY sense at all, you will put on some gloves, safety
goggles and a face mask, carry that equipment with the CF out of doors,
take all that CF off the stuff and vacuum the equipment thoroughly
before taking it back into your home. I'd do a lot of vacuuming in the
house where you were handling the stuff, too.

CF is not to be played with around electrical equipment.
