Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is the best method codec to get the 1's and 0's off the CD to the hard drive?
MLP is targeted at disc authoring as it has some properties you need on a disc. As reducing burst bitrates on the dvd so the dvd player can cope with it (theres an upper limit in the dvd standard) Alove a 2ch mixdown scheme for the 5.1 track, usually the dvd-a has a 2ch track to, but this options exist. You can somehow calculate the needed discspace and bitrates, and choose to reduce bith depth and sample frequency in less important channels to make a projekt fit the disc. A DVD-A don't need to have the same resolution in all channels, if the producers choose so. I figure most of them have 5*24/96 or 5*24/48 but it figures if you want a lot off extras and it's a long programme. And many more possibilties that I don't fully understand. It's probably not the most practical codec for use on a harddrive. as lossles is lossles, practicalities are all that counts, hence the popularity off FLAC. -- Mnyb Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42435 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is the best method codec to get the 1's and 0's off the CD to the hard drive?
Agree with all the above. EAC in secure mode will get as close as possible - usually 100% - to the original bits from the disk onto your hard drive. Once there we are no longer in the realm of infinite improbability familiar to us audiophiles. We are now - temporarily - in the world of absolute determinism known as computing where only hard, cold logic applies. At this stage bits are truly bits. They are either on or off. They are what they are. When packed by a lossless codec (eg FLAC or whatever) they can be reconstituted with 100% accuracy. If this were not true, computers would not work - period. You would notice rather quickly if there was any indeterminancy in the way the computer reads data from a hard drive or ram... Of course, then we send the data over ethernet to the Squeezebox (still OK, still computing at this point) and eventually we start to turn the bits into an analogue signal at which point the computing stops and odd stuff starts to happen again. -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann JISCO/UPCI - TACT RCS 2.2X with Good Vibrations S/W - MF X-DAC V3/X-PSU/X-10 buffer (Audiocomm full mods)- Linn 5103 - Linn Aktiv 5.1 system (6x LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters, Kimber Chord cables Phil Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=85 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42435 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 mediocre sound quality
I used to think only speakers and headphones needed burning in (which I've seen many times) but something happened recently which has surprised me. On plugging in my new SB3 a few months back I was pretty disappointed with the sound when compared to my Creek Evo cd player. From then on I played it through a Moodlabs Concept DAC, which was only slightly better. A couple of days ago I tried the SB3 again without the DAC and couldn't believe the difference! Again I compared it to my Creek cd player and I could hardly tell the difference!!! If I listened very hard I could tell that the Creek was better, but the difference was pretty small. The only explanation I can find is that the SB3 needed to be burned in to give it's best. The transformation is amazing. It's gone from being mediocre to a pretty damn good source, comparable to a cd player costing over twice as much. I even posted on these forums about the crappy sound - now I have to eat my words! I've discarded my plans to audition a Benchmark DAC. In my current system I think the SB3 is good enough. -- russelk SB3 -- Moodlab Concept DAC -- Creek Evo amp -- Quad 12L speakers russelk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12795 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42388 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

How do you run flac -test? My PC is running Windows Vista. Do I need to run it from a DOS shell? Are there any other programs I should look at for checking my FLAC files? I also have some MP3 files. Is there anything for checking MP3 files? I have about 29,000 tracks stored on a 750Gb hard drive. I also have 3 additional 750Gb hard drives in USB enclosures which I use to backup of my music files. 1 is kept off site. I would hate for the music on my backup drives to become corupted and then be unable to restore it if/when my main music drive fails. Windows Vista and all my other applications are on a separate hard drive to the music, so if Windows corupts itself, I do not loose my music. I use SyncBackSE to backup my music files, using the syncronise option, but I have it configured to tell me what it is going to delete and copy before it does it. This appears to work well for me.
