[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Banchmark DAC1 - USB or not USB ?

2008-05-07 Thread NigelD

I have recently added a SB Duet to my system which currently comprises
an SAT CD-Fix CD player, an Audio Research SP16 pre amp and VS55 power
amp combo powering Sonus FaberConcerto Grand Piano speakers. Cables
from Hovland.

I just bought the Duet to see if the convenience warrants its inclusion
into my system. I already have my (largely classical) music collection
ripped to iTunes (Apple Lossless) so it was a no brainer to give it a
try.

I love the product.

Now I am convinced that the Duet will stay in the system I am keen to
bring the sound quality from this source up to the levels I currently
enjoy from CD playback and so am planning to put the Benchmark DAC-1
between the Duet Receiver and the Audio Research Pre-amp.

My simple question is, should I go for the USB version or the older
non-USB version of the DAC? I obviously do not need the USB connection
itself but is this the only difference between the newer and the older
models or are there other component changes that would warrant me
paying £200 more?

I would welcome your thoughts.

thank you

Nigel

Anyone know anything about this DAC? Someone is selling one in mint

a little worse than my Yamaha CD player (SB3 volume at 100% during
 listening tests).

I'm trying to basically get much improved analog outs and I'm thinking
that this DAC might do the trick because its a well regarded
brand...but it is old so I'm not sure how it compares with cheaper,
 nower DACs.

 Any suggestions welcome

I've had one for a number of years. Although it is well regarded, I
found it somewhat clinical and hard to listen to for extended periods.
I much preferred a diy RAKK DAC. Recently, I made some minor
modifications to it based on a thread on diyaudio. I was delighted with
the change; it became enjoyable. Now I prefer it to the RAKK. All
subjective of course, and I'm always open to the notion that it was all
a perception/expectation delusion.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Question re Absence of 7.1 Bin File

2008-05-07 Thread lstern

I am running SC 7.01 on an Infrant Ready NAS. I am interested in trying
SC version 7.1 since, I believe, Transporter Firmware V40 supports
24/88.2 hi rez files.
Can someone explain why no Bin file is shown on the nightly 7.1
update site?? I assume my Infrant NAS can only be updated with a Bin
file.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

If the DAC is going to remain 'stuck' to the Duet and NEVER be connected
to a computer for playback, then don't waste the money. I've got
6-DAC1s in our studio facility and love them.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] FW42, and revisiting some FW40 bugs

2008-05-07 Thread Teus de Jong

Well, for me, the repeatable procedure is: update to fw40, listen the
the knob degauss. But that's not very helpful to you, is it?

That was the case here also. As soon as I went to 7.0.1 with FW40, the
degaussing started. About a week ago I gave beta 7.1 a try (with FW40).
To my surprise, the degaussing problem was gone!

I know this also doesn't help anybody in tracking this down, but could
there be something different in 7.1 that caused the disappearance of
the degaussing? Or is this all a bizarre coincidence?

BTW, as Sean says, FW40 still has the problem of disappearing signal
and strange noises when changing from network to digital input and v.v.
I will try FW42 as soon as it is available.

Teus

I appreciate your inputs by the way. Maybe I'll start with just
swapping the PSU in the squeezebox. I've read a good linear supply can

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Musical Fidelity 3.24 DAC

2008-05-07 Thread kh6idf

You might consider using a DEQ2496 or SRC2496 as a DAC:

http://www.behringer.com/DEQ2496/index.cfm

You also get a digital equalizer, real-time analyzer, automatic EQ (if
you add a calibrated mic), excellent metering, etc. It's a real audio
swiss army knife.

I'm using it as my DAC and also using the auto-EQ function.

You do need to turn the level down (using the utility menu) to match
line level in consumer equipment (I have mine set to -3.5dB) and there
is a switch on the back that must be set in the proper position so the
output isn't too high. Also since it uses balanced XLR outputs you
need an adapter to unbalanced RCA's (the adapters cost me $6 each at
Guitar Center).

I'm running the Squeezebox coaxial digital out into a SRC2496 (see
below) then using an optical link between the SRC2496 and DEQ2496 which
does the Digital to Analog conversion.

Here's a lengthy and very positive review from a few years ago:

http://www.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.mpl?forum=digitaln=108244review=1

Guitar Center and quite a few other online dealers sell it for $300:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Behringer-DEQ2496-Ultra-Curve-Pro-Mastering-Processor-Refurb-102305943-i1125218.gc

I actually got mine for $200 - it was a returned, used unit.

An even cheaper alternative is the SRC2496, which I also have and use
to upsample the Squeezebox digital output to 24/96. It has D/A and A/D
conversion and I believe it uses the same DAC as the DEQ2496. There is
no adjustment on the analog output level but you can turn down the
volume on the squeezebox a little if it's too much for your
preamp/amp/etc. The SRC2496 is only $129!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Musical Fidelity 3.24 DAC

2008-05-07 Thread brillo

I actually like the A324 a lot.

It was a nice DAC when it came out (see
http://www.stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/561 for the original
Stereophile review; it eventually made the Class A list of Stereophile
recommended components), and still sounds very nice today.

When used with a SB3 as transport it gives you, imho, sound that is
magnitudes better than the stock SB3 sound.

Some adjectives I would use to describe its sound are: refined (sorry
to disagree, Phil), analog-like, accurate, musical and dynamic.

Compared to the best DACs I've heard, it lacks the last degree of
detail, resolution and soundstaging. But it doesn't lag as far behind
the great ones as you might think. IMHO, it's worth $550 and will
significantly improve your SB3 experience (assuming that the rest of
your system is capable of reflecting the difference).
