Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Timing Jitter question

2008-05-11 Thread adamslim

A most succinct and balanced reply. The only thing I want to add is to
point out that if your DAC has a clock out then you can slave the
Transporter to it, which should reduce jitter to almost zero, although
is probably not quite as low as the 'internal' Transporter system.

Oh plus the standard health warning:

WARNING: The audibility of jitter in the low picoseconds is disputed.
Other factors may affect sound quality. This thread may self-destruct
in ten seconds.

I too have a Z-sys, they did implement a loopback , but the firmware
that provided it was flaky. It's evidently been re-instated.
I can tell you this however, I think it's a better idea to go for the
SB and an external DAC unless you need the transporters features as
imho , its dac is very cold and lifeless and in my system the
transporter is not an improvment over my CDP barring the convenience of
having your music at your fingertips.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Analog sound Xbox 360 vs SB3?

2008-05-11 Thread bigbwb

pablolie,

I do plan on auditioning a deperate DAC in mysystem some time down the
road. For now, I am really just looking to get the best analog
performance from a streamer that i can for my price point. The xbox
360 just sounds to dull and lifeless in comparison to the same tracks
from a CD. I am hoping to snag a SB3 to try out and see what
improvements i can gain in that regard.

I also don't have to turn the darn Tv on just to start media center
pick a playlist:)

For the money convenience the SB3 looks to be the best choice so
far.

Did you try clearing your browser's cache? That usually fixes web

I'm running today's 7.1 svn code with no major web interface problems.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Best method of connection for SB Classic to AMP

2008-05-11 Thread tank121

I have just move my Arcam Alpha 7 into the living room and now have my
sb3 conected via RCA.

Noticeable improvement, epspecially in base.

My quandry is this, my front two speakers wharfdale diamond 9.1s are
now plugged into the Arcam. I still want to use them for my front lr
channels in my 5.1 setup.

As i don't watch movies as frequently as listening to audio i intend to
just swap the speaker cable between the 2 amps.

Is this ok to do ?

Is there a more convenient method without sacrificing the quality.

I eventually intend to replace the 5.1 existing amp with a soundar
solution. Possibly the Yamaha 30d for it's HDMI connection. Any
thoughts ?

I know the true surround will be missing.

FW40 provided the loop capability. I've been using it without any
problems. Others have had some issues which have been confirmed as bugs.

FW42 is now available which addresses some of the issues found in FW40.

Better advice: get one and try it for yourself.

I find the Transporter anything but cold and lifeless, but the only way
to tell if you like it is to try it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] please urgent answer - want to be shure

2008-05-11 Thread pfarrell

You can't be sure. (Shure is an audio company, makes nice microphones).

The recommendation is to validate that the system can run at wide open
volume from your SB3, through the amp to the speakers. If you can
listen to it, then you are probably fine. But if you need to use the
SB3's volume control to keep from frying the tweeters, then you may
have a problem in the rare case that the SB3 software gets weird, has a
bug, etc.

So the recommendation is that if your system can't run wide open
listening to music, you should get either some attenuators, or use a
preamp.

There are nice audiophile attenuators that are fairly inexpensive,
search the forum archives

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] please urgent answer - want to be shure

2008-05-11 Thread seanadams

Connecting directly to an amp is an extremely bad idea. Some people like
the idea of having less stuff in the signal path, but this thinking is
completely wrong when it comes to matching signal levels. Besides the
obvious safety reasons, you need analog attenuation to maintain a good
signal to noise ratio. Fixed in-line attenuators (just a pair of
resistors) are a good solution, or you can use Transporter's internal
jumpers (which do the same thing).
