Being a programmer myself - I would not code something that did nothing! The only other logical use for the defeat selection is to idiot proof the volume control, so that it is not accidentally decreased. That doesn't sound very flattering for a device aimed at the audiophile! Read the text, it doesn't day anything about defeating anything, it says Output level is fixed at 100% - all it does is lock the volume control. The feature was added because people were using other devices (i.e. the amp) to control volume and didn't want someone accidentally turning down the source volume. I'm sure we can dig out the forum thread from a few years ago when it was discussed if you really want. Back in the day I had an old Marantz CD80 which had a remote control with volume buttons on it (quite unusual for a CDP). On the back there were two sets of outputs - one was fixed at 100% and the other variable. I didn't feel unflattered :) -- radish http://www.last.fm/user/polymeric radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66347 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Yes. According to Sean Adams, the designer of these boxes, 100% variable and 100% fixed is identical. No difference in how the signal is processed. -- Veggen Veggen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7035 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66347 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to switch to different input (digital)
Just got a transporter, trying to figure out how to switch to digital coax and optical and using it as DAC, but can't figure it out. Can't find the menu to do that? Curious as to how the sound of your NuForce compares with your t-amp? I know the NuForce is hugely more powerfull but what about microdynamics and musicality at lower volumes? - thanks much! -- earwaxer Waxer Transporter Winsome labs mouse Maggie MMG's (modified) JPS Labs power cords Audioquest Granite speaker wire Silver Bullet interconnect HSU research sub earwaxer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32040 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66347 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

It would be cool if Sean could explain how the volume control still works when it is bypassed - the volume level changes on the player screen and in squeezecenter but it seems to be out of the circuit - it has no effect. If the volume was just fixed at %100 I would think that the effect of trying to change the volume would have no effect on the volume graphic. Maybe a Transporter programmer could weigh in on this one! -- earwaxer Waxer Transporter Winsome labs mouse Maggie MMG's (modified) JPS Labs power cords Audioquest Granite speaker wire Silver Bullet interconnect HSU research sub earwaxer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32040 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66347 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

One thing more that this option provides: plugins like Chris' Denon AVP TCP control and my Denon RS232 serial control can allow Squeezebox Controller, IR, Web, and button control to affect the *amp* volume, and have the Squeezebox displays (web, VFD, Controller) show the *amp* volume while the Logitech gear is fixed at full output level. I've been too lazy to test, but might it be that ReplayGain is handled differently at fixed output? If fixed applied no RG, in most cases that'd mean a number of dB of extra volume (negative RG not applied), and louder always sounds better, right? -- peterw http://www.tux.org/~peterw/ free plugins: http://www.tux.org/~peterw/#slim AllQuiet BlankSaver ContextMenu FuzzyTime KidsPlay KitchenTimer PlayLog PowerCenter/BottleRocket SaverSwitcher SettingsManager SleepFade StatusFirst SyncOptions VolumeLock peterw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2107 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66347 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I don't know if it was the intention, but this fictional volume behavior makes it very nice for controlling the volume on amps that feature RS232 or Ethernet/TCPIP control options. If you read the Perl source, I believe the difference is merely that when output is fixed, Squeezecenter doesn't send SlimProto volume commands to the player when the volume changes.
