Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Doh! Now we need 24-bit/176.4kHz on the Transporter!

2008-01-07 Thread DynamicalSystem

The Stone Roses eponymous debut is rather excellent music that was badly
recorded. It sounds amazing on a large boomy PA, but over a revealing
hi-fi it is barely listenable.

I think we should let him and Dean do that. It seems like a pretty
good route forwards.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Headless music server

2007-06-03 Thread DynamicalSystem

Built into XP is Remote Desktop Connection
(Start-Programs-Accessories). You may need to configure XP to stop
errors when running headless, but this should be easy (and free from
where you are now).

Alternatively you can buy a KVM switch and share your keyboard, video
and mouse between the two computers.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Small room, small footprint

2007-05-31 Thread DynamicalSystem

I'm currently talking to Hexateq about creating a 2 channel,
flush-mount, auto-sensing D class amp that fits into the wall.

The idea is that it hooks to a set of ceiling speakers and power at the
back, with RCA on the front for connecting the SB3 up to. No power
switch, no LEDs.

At the moment it's bespoke, and therefore expensive. My view is that
this could be a fairly serious product for them and volume could bring
the price down.

Is anyone else interested?

Thanks for that - I'm in the UK, so mainland Europe isn't a problem for

Do you know of anyone producing amps using the ColdAmp range of

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] D Class

2007-05-16 Thread DynamicalSystem

I'm looking at new power amps, and I've been doing a bit of research.

Does anyone have any eqperience of the 'Hexateq'
(http://www.hexateq-av.com) amps? They are based on the 'Hypex'
(http://www.hypex.nl) modules, and seem very customisable for a
remarkably low price.

Incidently, 'someone' (http://www.hexateq-av.com/comment3.html) has
built a Squeezebox 3 into one of them using a Gainclone amp.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Active Speakers

2006-07-28 Thread DynamicalSystem

Thanks for that.

The Mackies are indeed nice. I use the Tannoy Reveal Actives in my
home studio, and often regret not getting the Mackies. The issue, as
you say, is WAF.

Requirements for active speakers from my perspective are:

High WAF
Auto Off/On
Great sound quality
RCA input

I'm not sure I understand the bug as it stands. By analog out, it
means RCA, I'm guessing? Does this mean that all auto-sensing amps and
speakers fail to sense with the SB? Does this happen even if the SB is
in stand-by?

If so, then the options are to go for something more esoteric
(Meridians?) or ditch the auto-off requirement and get the JBLs or the
Swans?

Ah yes - the infamous people only buy one monitor sales strategy! I
guess it makes life easy for the 5.1 and 7.1 crowd.

With regard to the auto-off bug, does this mean that only the Mackies
are affected?

How about other Actives? Do they have the same problem?
