Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter suddenly dead and not responding to anything

2009-11-14 Thread Siduhe

I'm also very surprised by this - if it's within warranty the obligation
in the UK (and this should be the same across the EU) is to repair or
replace first, then refund if repair/replace cannot be done for a
reasonable cost. The Transporter is a seriously expensive piece of kit
and there should be proper support available.

A possible alternative would be to speak to some of the people who mod
the Transporter - they may have an idea what is wrong, and if they will
quote you to repair, I suspect you would be within your rights to pass
this cost onto Logitech.

Also, if the goods are faulty and within warranty (rather than not
suitable), you do not have to take a credit note - a full refund should
be given. I think this the same in Germany as the UK.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Rules

2008-11-09 Thread Siduhe

As an avid reader of the Audiophile forum (and a very occasional
contributor) I have to say I find the personal element really detracts
from what are otherwise really very interesting discussions.

For me the key thing is how these rules are applied in practice - i.e.
consistently, so people are treated equally, and with a bit of common
sense, so threads don't get locked down and people banned unless
they've been given an opportunity to wind their necks in. Personally,
I think we should give Slim Devices and Mike a chance to show us how
they want to moderate this forum in practice.

Also, I have to say, if people can't make their points and put their
views across without resorting to personal insults, it does rather
suggest their views don't have sufficient force to stand on their own
two feet (IMHO).

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] "non-audiophile audio enthusiast"?

2008-11-07 Thread Siduhe

I understand the term audiophile (in its original and non-pejorative
sense) to mean the aim of reproducing the original music
performance/experience as closely as possible.

An audio enthusiast is someone who enjoys the act of listening to and
being affected by music and aims for a sound which is enjoyable at a
subjective level.

Within this context (also highly subjective, I accept), I would also
say I'm a non-audiophile audio enthusiast...

There have been problems in the past if your file names contain
non-unicode characters - Slimserver doesn't always import them, but I
don't know if this is still an issue with the current release version,
or in the upcoming version (Squeezecenter) which is the late stages of
beta testing. I just renamed my few files with English character
filenames.

There are lots of really good programs which will help set up a VPN
(like TightVNC). The difficulty will be in getting backup software
located on the local computer to "see" the host for backup as you've
already identified, but I understand it can be done.

For a quick and easy (but not free) solution - there are lots of
programs that will do it for you. 'LogMeIn Pro' (http://logmein.com)
has a file manager which will synchronise and replicate folders between
host and local computer (like using SyncToy, but between two computers)
and it's secure and easy to use. You have to subscribe annually for
the service though. I have, because I travel a lot for work and need
to access my home computers remotely quite a lot. Not sure it would be
worth it as a backup strategy alone. MS are also running a beta program
that does the same thing - not sure how good it is though:
https://www.foldershare.com/

For that I use Acronis with an automatic weekly backup to an external
drive which is mounted on my network (or if I add a lot of new music,
as soon as I'm done), and a monthly/6wkly backup which gets taken off
site. Both backups are "incremental" so don't take too long. If the
drive isn't there, I get messages that a scheduled task has failed
every time I start up my laptop, which usually kicks me into doing it.

There's plainly redundancy in that strategy, but I don't add so much
music over 4-6 weeks that it would be a disaster to lose that much.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amp shutdown when power cycling Transporter

The behaviour sounds exactly like the power circuit breaker is kicking
in - pretty sure Meridian amps have these inbuilt. Not sure why power
cycling the Transporter would do this however.

AFAIK, the breaker should only kick in where there is a surge, not a
cutout in your system. Meridian may be able to advise, as Sean
suggests.

Are you using the Fishbone skin in 6.5.2 or 6.5.0? The click on the
progress bar is certainly working for me with 6.5.2, and I'm sure it's
worked like that in the past for 6.5.1 at least. You do need to use
Fishbone however.

As azinck3 says, it's not precisely accurate, but you can easily move
within the song ("end first quarter", "halfway through", "a few mins
from the end" type of thing)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] does squeezebox 3 have a 'compilations' option?

2007-05-24 Thread Siduhe

Well, at the risk of opening up a can of worms, yes, the SB will support
Compilations. I use it very successfully and have rarely had problems
with it. Others (with different tagging set ups) have had much bigger
issues (search the forums for a few threads and you will see what I
mean.

The setting you want is in Slimserver / Server Settings / Group
Compilation Albums Together. Then do a full clear and rescan.

This will create a new entry at the top of the Artist List called
Various Artists (though you can change this, mine are under
Compilations), and all of your compilations are under that.

I add a "Compilation" tag to all my relevant albums, and Slimserver
picks this up when it scans. It is important that all of your files
for a compilation album are in the same folder (i.e. not under seperate
artist folders).

I think Slimserver also recognises automatically when an album has more
than one artist and makes that a compilation, but I think this is the
piece that doesn't work so well for some.

The wiki has more info:

If USB / firewire, can you plug something else in and check the port?

Can you access the files and can Disc Utility can see the drive?

If you do File / Get Info on this disk's icon in Finder, does it have
the "ignore ownership" checkbox unchecked?

Have you checked the permissions in terminal, just in case something's

Gentlemen,

Congratulations. There was a moment when it all could have descended
into insults, exclamations marks and hyperbole. I've seen it happen on
a number of other forums with less cause.

Instead, you've made me laugh out loud.

Let me offer a non-audiophile view. I love music, don't have a pure
enough system to understand half of what is said, but I've learnt an
awful lot from all of the points of view expressed on the audiophile
forum, some of which I will use to help me get the best out of what I
have now and in future.

It would be a shame if the positive stuff was lost in the general mire
of whether jitter really exists and whether someone is qualified to
express a view on it.

P.S. I'm also going to take the face cream crack at face value (no pun
intended) and in the way I expect it was meant. If 29 out of 43 women
saw a visible difference in their fine lines and wrinkles, that's good
enough for me. [TFIC for the avoidance of all doubt].

The EAC setup Guide is' here'

Another "one click" FLAC ripper to consider is Audiograbber (also
freeware). There's a section on it (by me, I hasten to add) in the
wiki. All you do is point the "External Encoder" box under MP3
settings to wherever your flac.exe file is and it does the rest. It's
not a "perfect" rip like EAC but more than adequate for most users and
very easy to use IMHO.

To be fair, "screens" aren't [my perception at least] Slim's area of
expertise. Perhaps this is something they could / should look at in
future, but I would prefer it's not at the expense of their core
competancies.

Also, if it helps, there are several screen solutions which work pretty

pkfox Wrote:

I don't use RN, but used to use a Linkstation as a NAS.

One thing I would recommend (from personal experience) if your scan
times are very long is to run a full clear and rescan with the debug
flag "d_scan" on, and the log window opened up.

If you have any old playlists or old file references which don't exist
any more in your library, this can cause Slimserver to get into a loop
and slow down your scan. Slimilarly, any old recursive links (to other
parts of your music lib) may do the same thing. If you have a lot of
songs, it can be easy to miss these when you tidy up your library. You
will need to watch the log file as the scan starts and for the first few
minutes.

If you run the scan and the log output shows no errors, the slow scan
time is far more likely to be down to your set up.
