It's first order, phase coherent speakers that does it :-D

I fully agree. I recently purchased a used pair of Meadowlark
Shearwater HR's from a friend, and I've become a first-order convert.
I wouldn't have thought that I could detect a difference in the speed
at which the cones were firing, but it actually does makes a big
difference. The sound is much tighter and clearer.

I think it also helps to get fairly efficient speakers, in the 88 db+
region at least.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] AccurateRip not working with EAC

2008-01-01 Thread benthos

First of all, I don't know how to correct the problem with Accuraterip.
But I would recommend that you simply stop using it. You don't need
Accuraterip to make bit-perfect copies. Instead, go into EAC's drive
settings and burn a test cd to determine your drive's offset, and make
sure that the accurate stream feature is selected (your Plextor is
compatible).

I know this is probably not the answer you're looking for, but you
don't really need Accuraterip. I'd let it go.

Agreed. When I first heard about Apple's new product, I thought it
sounded pretty good. And it does sound good, until you realize that,
like the Ipod, it would require buying into Apple's proprietary
nonsense. I too prefer genuinely lossless compression (FLAC), and I
like flexibility, etc. When you buy an Apple product, you're paying to
have your choices limited. To that I say, phooey.

That's where you and I part paths: it's about my property, not Apple's,

So, you don't like DRM-protected music? There is an easy solution! Go
to a music store! Log into Amazon and buy from the comfort of your home
(I've spent thousands, literally, on Amazon in the last year alone).

Goody for you. I like your solution though, as that's precisely what I
do. And when I say that FLAC is lossless, the only reason I raise the
issue is because Apple's codec, as I understand it, is not actually
lossless.

I would appreciate some recommendations about which speakers I should
consider. (My favorite music is rock.)

 Thank you.

It's true that the T-Amp requires 8 ohm, efficient speakers, but I say:
don't limit yourself to tiny speakers. I have an old pair of BW 802 80
series speakers (large floorstanding models), that supposedly require a
minimum 25 watts per channel at 8 ohm. My Super T-Amp officially puts
out just 15 watts per channel, but when I hooked up the speakers today,
the T-Amp drove them flawlessly, with volume to spare. There are plenty
of good full-range, efficient floor-standing speakers out there.. do
some research, and you can get excellent sound out of the T-Amp.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: What Amp and Speakers Are You Using?

2006-03-06 Thread benthos

For the past few months, I've been using my SB3 with an old Kenwood
KR-3600 amp/receiver and a pair of KLH speakers. I found that the
SB3's VU meter really fit the old amp aesthetic. Then today I received
a Sonic Impact Super T-Amp in the mail (at half the cost of my SB3, I
figured I couldn't go wrong). See
http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/6cd8/
I think I can safely say that the old blue-screened beast will be going
into storage.

I'm really impressed with this little amp. It has remarkable
soundstaging and clarity, better than any amp I've ever heard, and it's
made my otherwise-not-so-extraordinary speakers sing. It is a bit on
the bright side though, and I'm hoping that will go away with more use.
I've thought of pairing it with a tube pre-amp to warm the sound up a
bit, but I haven't been able to decide on anything - and I worry about
losing that clarity. Also, it seems hard to find affordable tube
pre-amps that have built-in phono stages.

Are you absolutely certain about this? I have an NW-E407, and it
doesn't play mp3's.. the mp3's that are loaded into SonicStage are
automatically converted to atrac when they're loaded onto the device -
which explains why it takes so infernally long to load them.

How fast is the loading process with SonicStage now? Has it changed at
all?

 Under consideration:

I recommend that you avoid Sony products like the plague. There are a
number of reasons, but most of the big ones have to do with Sony's
aggressive DRM (Digital Rights Management) stance, which has resulted
in (among other things) the recent fiasco with Sony cd's (unlawfully)
installing things onto people's computers without their knowledge or
permission. The big drag of their mp3 players is that you have to use
Sony's own SonicStage software for loading and/or deleting anything
from the player.. which is very inconvenient.

Also, Sony mp3 players don't actually play mp3's - you have to use
SonicStage to convert all mp3's to Sony's proprietary format. It's a
major time-waster, and offers you, the consumer, no benefit whatsoever.

I say, find a player that has a mini hard drive, and that plays FLAC.
