Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sound quality between wav and flac
Hi all, let me contribute two observations to this interesting discussion 1. Streaming any flac file as pcm (wav) results in a higher volume level than streaming the same file in flac natively (even visible in a wider range of the movement of the pointers of the transporter's analogue VU-Meter, of which I thought, this display was only a nice gimmick). Could be a hint that the wohle phenomenon could have to do with gain (?). 2. Today I streamed a flac file (first movement of the symphony No 5 by Ralph Vaughan-Williams) natively and the transporter displayed as bitrate; 532 kb/s VBR. When streaming the same file as pcm the display showed: 532 kb/s VBR (converted to 1411 kb/s ABR). So me too, I prefer to set the squeezeserver to convert flac to pcm and enjoy the result - despite of it is a placebo effect or not. Themis;498194 Wrote: You don't need to convert the library to WAV. Just ask SqueezeServer software to transmit them to your Squeezebox as WAV. ;) Unfortunately, SqueezeCenter 7.3. seems to have lost its capability to transcode flac to wav which was working in 7.2. flawlessly . When I set flac flac to 'disabled' and flac wav to 'flac' there is no more playback of flac files at all. -- ilbravo ilbravo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18371 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71321 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Apple Lossless a compromise?
GuyDebord;316806 Wrote: I just changed the settings in squeeze center to ALAC-WAV and I couldnt believe the difference, . thank you very much for this posting. I made the same exciting sound experience you describe with my recently purchased transporter, when I played for the first time AIFF files ripped from a CD (Saint-Saens, Symphony #3 -Organ) with iTunes. Surprisingly, the ALAC and FLAC rips (using Max because performed on an iMac)) from the same CD sounded poorer. This was very confusing and misleading because it is stated as a matter of fact, that lossless formats should not loose sound quality. According to your experience, I would guess now that the transporter perform some on the fly conversion with FLAC files in the default settings. Unfortunately I could not figure out, where to change the settings you described. In the advanced settings for file conversion in the 7.0.1. version of squeezecenter, there is no way to set any format to WAV. There is only a choice between Native and deactivated for most of the formats (I hopeI have used the right vocabulary because I am using a german localization of the server). Any additional hint would be very much appriciated.. -- ilbravo ilbravo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18371 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34122 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
