Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Shielded Mains Cables
As well as shielded cables, one of the bug bears of many an audiophile in the UK is the plug fuse and it's dodgy connection in many plugs. One way around the problem is to get a multiple outlet strip like this http://www.biagmbh.com/katalog/pdfs/77/7735.pdf (there are plenty for sale on ebay, just search for 'IEC distribution' but I know the one I've linked to is a well made unit). Internally it uses 5mm xsection solid copper soldered to the outlet connetions. You can bypass the funky fuse in the unit (it's there for the USA as they don't have fuses in their plugs) and if you want to you can solder your supply cable direct onto the copper supply rails rather than using the first socket for the supply. Make up your own cables using good quality shielded cable and IEC plug and sockets (Schurter or Kaiser ones are good) and you're good to go. You then only have 1 fuse in the plug that goes to the mains rather than a fuse in a plug for every piece of equipment. Much better than trying to get BIG cables into one of the hydra type plugs and you've eliminated the vast majority of the fuses. As usual with electricity, if you don't know what your doing don't even try as electricity can kill! -- killie99 Musical Fidelity KW250S, Impulse H2 speakers, SB3, Duet a Boom and another Boom killie99's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87319 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Musical Fidelity KW250s
My MF KW250s finally arrievd at the weekend after nearly a months wait, but it was well worth it. My SB3 has been transformed, the sound is hugely improved over my previous system and it was no slouch (MF A1000 and an MF A324 DAC). Bass extension is superb - I can now make the windows rattle even at relatively low volume levels :) So far I haven't found anything to fault it apart from the cheap crappy plastic flap for the cd tray - for a piece of kit that originally reatiled at £5000 the plastic flap is a shocker! Got the KW250s for £1500 brand new with the full 2 year MF warranty and it could be the best £1500 I've ever spent on a piece of equipment and the glowing blue feet seemed to help the WAF even although it is a beast of a box at 37kg! -- killie99 Musical Fidelity KW250S, Impulse H2 speakers oh, and an SB3 killie99's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43652 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Musical Fidelity KW250s
The power amps are supposed to be identical to the full blown kw amps except with half the power and yes, the feet glow red, orange or blue ... I know MF get some pretty bad press due to some of their more outrageous statements but this is a damn fine product when you consider what you get in the box. It's difficult to say exactly what part of the box has made the most improvement as it is effectively a complete system change all in one go but I for one am well impressed with the sound I can hear coming out of my speakers. -- killie99 Musical Fidelity KW250S, Impulse H2 speakers oh, and an SB3 killie99's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43652 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone identify this cable?
It's speaker cable and it belonged to a friend who sadly died and his wife is asking me to dispose of everything for her. I reckon it's probably about 5 years old as I can remeber him getting it when he bought new speakers and I know he didn't make it up himself - possible that the dealer made it up to a custom length? It's terminated with zplugs and certainly looks like Nordost but I'm a bit wary of listing it on ebay and saying it's Nordost if it's not. I also don't want to just toss it out if it's worth a bit. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Inca Tech Claymore II
I had one of the very early Claymores, (think it was 1985 I bought it) and cost about £350 which in those days was a large sum of money. Sold it about 3 years ago after it had lay in my loft for 10 years doing nothing. Do you still have the gold plated plug? Anyway, I found that you needed reasonably sensitive speakers to get the best out of the amp as it wasn't overly powerful (50W I seem to remember). It came with the original pre-amp-out-to-normal-in jumper cables missing and replaced with a regular 6-foot RCA cable. I had a local store make me a pair of three-inch jumpers from Monster cable. Anyone know how much a 3020 cost brand-new? The NAD drives a pair of Mission 762i speakers, also from eBay. Total cost, with shipping, $120 for the amp and $160 for the speakers (not counting the stands, of course). It sounds better than anything I've ever owned, even when playing MP3. At one point I had a bunch of video stuff in this room too (there's a TV on the wall above it), and swapped out the NAD for a huge Yamaha RX-V800 that I picked up for $500 just to get remote volume control and video switching, and connected the SB by optical. Our main living room amp just died so I'm pulling the Yamaha out to replace it, and the old NAD is back in the bedroom. (One reason why it looks so tidy... A transporter is out of the question due to lack of funds (I've even thought about selling my LP12/Ittok to fund a transporter but nearly cry at the thought even though I seldom listem to Lp's) so I'm down to a SB3 and a DAC. Current system consists of a Primare D30.2 CD player, Musical Fidelity A1000 amp and Impulse H2 speakers so I'm looking for a fairly high end DAC. I guess 2nd hand will be the way to go to get best bang for my good old british pounds so ebay here I come with my £400-£500. Thoughts have been along the lines of a Tag McLaren / Meridian / Arcam and I would love to have the thoughts of anyone who has one of these hooked to an SB3. I had a Meridian 206 CD player for a number of years and really liked the sound of it but I've no experience of any other manufacturers DACs so any useful comments appreciated. -- killie99 killie99's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30408 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
