How was the quality of the B-stock?
 The price is pretty attractive.

I couldn't even find a scratch or dent... so they must have very strict
quality standards. Maybe a little blemish on the top of the right.
Your results may vary, but that's what I saw.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A2 or A5?

2009-10-03 Thread mattbrown521

I ended up ordering the A5s, B-stock. Received this AM. Listening now.
Superb!

For fun, I connected them to a switch to allow quick side-by-side
comparison of old vs new. (Old = 15 year old boombox with leftover
Samsung surround speakers) The differences are astonishing!

Thanks to all for the help.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A2 or A5?

2009-09-18 Thread mattbrown521

Thanks for all the new info, I'll definitely take advantage of the B
Stocks.

Question - I noticed that the A2 has both an 1/8 stereo input and RCA
inputs, but the A5 has just the 1/8 stereo input. Is this anything to
get too excited about in terms of one being better than the other? I
was envisioning using an RCA cable to connect with my PC sound card, but
I could just as well use an RCA - 1/8 adapter if I had the A5.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A2 or A5?

2009-09-17 Thread mattbrown521

So it sounds like the A5s may be a bit oversized for my space, which
isn't necessarily a negative :) . What about at low levels, are there
noticeable differences between A2s and A5s? Will I hear more detail
with A5s on, say, acoustic jazz (not to be confused with light jazz)
or well-mixed (i.e., not over compressed) rock CDs? Or are the A2s just
as good in this regime?

Also, if I eventually get the transporter (don't have one right now),
would the A5s do it justice, or would I want to immediately save more
money to go into the four-figure amp / speaker range?

Thanks to both for the replies. Of course, now I'm torn! Decisions,
decisions. I think I'll wait another week or so to order, any one else
care to opine?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A2 or A5?

2009-09-12 Thread mattbrown521

Hi all,

I've been referring to myself as a budding audiophile for a couple
years now, and I think the time has come to upgrade to audiophile in
early bloom (approaching 30 ... toys are getting more expensive). I
have some money to spend ($200-300) and am trying to choose between the
Audioengine A2 and A5 speakers. (I could be convinced to shell out more
than 300 if worth it.)

I will be using them in connection to my computer (RCA outs on my 5
year old Audiophile 2496 sound card - I assume the DAC is satisfactory
enough on this card). They will be located in my office - an
approximately 15' x 15' room in my basement - three walls are drywall on
studs on concrete with dirt behind, and the fourth wall is drywall on
studs with a french door to the hall. Ceiling is drywall with a kids
playroom above (only a factor when the kids are playing :) ). Only
potential sources of noise is my computer (contained in a compartment of
my computer desk which I may want to insulate depending on impact to PCs
ability to cool). There are no air supply / return ducts, which is nice
for noise but a problem if I want to keep the door shut for long periods
of time (the doors are pretty tight to the carpet, and a man needs to
breath!).

Besides the computer, I will also be using the speakers with an old
record player I have via its headphone out (either connected through the
2496 or directly to the speakers). I'll also want to hook up a CD
player of some kind directly to the speakers (old boombox or discman) to
listen to music in periods when the PC is unavailable. But the main use
will be with my PC.

It's a given that I'll at least buy the A2s. I'm trying to decide if
it's worth popping for the A5s.

If I do go with the A5s, is it worth upgrading to the bamboo for an
extra $100? I like the look but don't know about what additional
performance I may get with it.

Thanks in advance, I love being able to tap this vast wealth of
knowledge.

Finally, something that an engineer of the mechanical persuasion can
understand. This is the quote of the thread, IMO.

Nice work everyone.
