I have been using the old A5 connected to a Touch for more than one
year, but I have no experience with new A5+. My old A5 does the auto
sleep, after something like 5 min of inactivity, you hear the speaker
pop as the amp switches off. From memory, they still consume 1 or 2 W
after going in auto-sleep. The annoying thing with the A5 is that the
blue led still stay on solid after going in auto-sleep.

The A5 has two 3.5mm jack input, I would have preferred the RCA input
 of the A5+.

I find incredible that auto-sleep is no longer listed as a feature of
the A5+. Good eye catching that, I would have assumed that they would
have carried over this essential function. I would send an e-mail to
AudioEngine themselves to verify the availability of that feature.

Just to let you know what Audioengine replied about the A5+:

Here's some power consumption and sleep function info for the A5+;

Idle: 10W
Mute: 6W
Sleep: 4W

The idle mode would be automatic when no music is playing, the lights
will remain on and solid and nothing needs to be done to resume audio
playback. The mute and sleep mode can be initiated with the remote
control and will reduce power consumption even more when not in use,
these each have there own way of blinking the indicator light to let
you know they are in a deep sleep mode, you would need to use the
remote, or the front panel volume control to bring the set out of these
deep sleep modes to resume playback. It's perfectly fine however to
simply let them Idle when not in use.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Powered Speakers Recommendations

2012-03-14 Thread mhaas

My requirements for powered speakers for my SBT apart from good SQ are:
1. remote control
2. auto power on/off when (no) sound
Audioengine A5 have 2 but not 1 and A5+ have 1 but not 2, am I right,
A5 owners?
Anybody knows of an alternative?

The speakers are out of reach in the bedroom/kitchen and I keep the
volume on 100% on the SBT.

I keep a set of A5's in my traveling system...with the SB Touch as a
source, it's a fine little speaker. Lot's of bang for the buck.

I know, but they don't have the auto-sleep/wake up feature, am I
correct?

I stand corrected. The Sleep feature is controlled from the remote.
There MAY be an auto sleep mode also, but I
don't see it at glance. Seems like a small matter. You needed a
Remote. Use it to put 'em to sleep! :)

The website is not clear about the auto feature, that's why I'd prefer
some owner confirmed how the sleep mode works.
As to the manual sleep on the remote - I don't want to look for a
second remote to put the speakers on or off whilst controlling the
touch from my android. Or remember to put them off when I finish. The
remote is needed for occasional volume adjustment. Seems petty but
that's the convenient way I'm used to do it (with my crappy JBL
speakers)

 See.

You seem to live not that far away from Meicord.
Why don't you stop by and get yourself some lessons in german
 engineering.
These guys are pretty skilled telecommunicaton engineers and willing to
support people with limited knowledge around the subject.

 That's gotta be entertaining.

And, you're even able to read the german documents and reviews about
the subject. That's gotta be even more entertaining.

And one final hint: First think. Then write. ;)

 Enjoy.

I've had a look at the website
http://www.mains-cables-r-us.co.uk/streaming-accessories/308-meicord-audiophile-ethernet-network-cables.html
and read the technical paper
http://www.mains-cables-r-us.co.uk/siteuploads/meicord.pdf
It's a very poor paper. The perfectly valid comparisons of different
Ethernet cables and their compliance with Cat5 or Cat6 specs show that
these cables might differ in the efficiency of data transmission, have
possibly slightly different throughput but that's nothing to do with
audio. One of the beauties of Ethernet is it's media independent. It
can run on copper wires or optical fibers. Even wireless WiFi is
similar to Ethernet. In all cases, the purpose is to transfer data from
A to B without a loss. If it's audio data, it doesn't matter if it's
converted into sound at A or B, the result is the same, if the same
conversion is applied and the data is available. One can only wonder
why they even bothered to reference a technical paper dealing with
irrelevant measurements.
All recommendations for the Meicord cables on the website are based on
purely subjective impressions of people who can hear grass grow.

Soundcheck,
With all respect, in your last reply you didn't say anything about the
influence of the OS on the LMS which is feeding the SBT and the
Ethernet cable which connects the 2 devices. That was the original
subject of this thread and you expressed some bold statements about it.

It's pretty much what I do with TT3.0 on the Touch.

Getting rid of pretty much everything which has nothing to do with the
LMS server path. And then you try to make that task run as smooth as
 possible.

That'll have an impact on the receiving end. At least that's what some

The gamers are years ahead of optimizing their gaming servers and
 networks.
It's really interesting to see what they've done. (speedguide.net)

Sorry to having to press you here: This thread is about the OS tweaks
on the SERVER side - LMS, not the PLAYER - TT3.
BTW the gamers are optimizing to increase the speed of the network they
need for the large amount of data to transmit.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Win 7 Optimisations

2012-01-27 Thread mhaas

Soundcheck,
you are avoiding the topic of this thread and still haven't given any
reasons why server OS and cables between the server and the player
would influence the SQ.
If, say, a flac file is downloaded from the other end of the world over
the Internet directly to the player and then played, it would be
preposterous to say that the type of the OS on the remote server and
the conditions/type of the cabling, routers, switches etc on the path
between the player and the remote server determine the SQ when the file
is played. And streaming over TCP is similar to this non real-time
downloading a file.
