[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A multitude of choices...
Hi, I haven't had a squeezebox for quite awhile. I just reviewed the staggering list of services (slacker, soma) and options for listening. I am a subscriber to Rhapsody and enjoy it and the quality is quite good. I am also very familiar with Pandora and know that they now have a premium service for $36 per year which features a higher bit stream. Of all the other choices, are there some other higher quality music squeezebox options to use for us audiophiles? I'm not speaking of individual stations but rather the list of free or pay services that is listed on the squeeze website that are accessible with the squeeze products. -- mr_bill mr_bill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6737 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76944 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

My findings with the SB3 were: A bit of congestion to the midrange and some loss of treble. I added a Benchmark Dac 1 and percieved an improvement in sound. I also owned a Transporter and felt that it was an improvement over the SB3 alone, but would not swear that it was better than the SB3 w/Benchmark Dac 1 I bet Pat Farrell, member may echo the same thing. -- mr_bill mr_bill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6737 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=75447 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Touch versus Transporter - beta testers chime in please
Hi, So many of us have been patiently waiting for the new Touch. Beta testers have lived with the Touch for awhile and also been through new software changes and some of you have experience with the TP, own dacs, have very nice systems and have likely formed opinions. Yes, I have read through the older posts, but let's collect some of these up to date comments here. My question is asked in terms of a high perfomance two channel system and I don't intend to use a preamp but rather run straight to amplifier. I have owned the SB3 and wasn't impressed with its analog out but was impressed digital out to a quality dac such as the Benchmark. I also owned the Transporter and was impressed with it as a player direct to amp. I have since owned other digital including a Theta Gen VIII but can't justify that type of expenditure. I really enjoy services such as Rhapsody and Pandora as well as my CD collection and the Squeeze solution seems the best to me. (the Linn products are unfamiliar to me, and are pricey but may be better) Have there been advances in the digital volume control on the new Touch to help with the problem of not losing resolution when running straight to amp? (I know there are pros and cons to preamp or no preamp) Analog outputs.is the Touch the equal of the Transporter or is the Transporter better. I can go either way - rca or balanced out if it gives the advantage to the TP. How does the Touch with external dac such as a lower priced high quality dac (Dacmagic, Benchmark) compare to the standalone Transporter? Please, your comments ar valuable and thanks!! -- mr_bill mr_bill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6737 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74715 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

So, give it too me straight. Analog outputs.is the Touch the equal of the Transporter or is the Transporter better and I can go either way - rca or balanced out if it gives the advantage to the TP. Anyone that has compared - please comment as I want to purchase one or the other. I understand the high value of the Touch as a transport only into an external dac, but I will use analog out. pfarrell;510740 Wrote: iPhone wrote: The Touch is a killer Squeezebox and in my opinion is head and shoulders above the SB3. The Transporter has the advantage of a better supported (Power Supplies and components) DAC circuit layout in my opinion and is way above the Touch in the total Power Supply area. Head to Head as a Digital Transport into an upscale outboard DAC, I say buy the Touch. From a practical standpoint, it makes tons of sense to buy a Touch first. If you need that extra bit (especially the balanced output, which I use on my TP) you can always buy a TP later. Very few people can get along with only one SqueezeBoxen I have not done A/B comparison between my Touch and my TP, but the Touch is very nice. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] linear power supply for duet?
iPhone;329695 Wrote: That statement seems fool hearty and misguided. That is not the purpose of the Duet. In my opinion, if one is going to do that, one bought the wrong equipment in the first place. What a wild and misleading statement, for it is not even close unless one buys a DAC that costs more then a Transporter in the first place and one still can't play 24/96 files! If one is going to buy a Duet, an upgraded PS, and a DAC, one probably should have bought a Transporter in the first place! One of the main reasons is that it also allows one to play 24/96 files. It is all in one unit and is audiophile equipment instead of three parts trying to be something they can never be. Again, it is my opinion that the lowest cost setup that I have found that starts to best my TP in some areas is an SB3 driving a Bel Canto Dac3 and this is only for Red Book FLAC files. This setup costs $1000 more then the TP and still can't play 24/96 files! The purpose in a high end system for the SB3 or Duet is just to use as a transport. Analog out on the SB3 and Duet doesn't sound good. I was implying that you do need a high quality dac to use with the Duet or SB3 or what is the point, unless you want a lower quality solution? I don't have any 24/96 files. Do I still need to buy a Transporter? I owned a Transporter and have owned an SB3 into a Dac1 and now a Duet with a Gen VIII which I like better than either of the previous two combos. The SB3 and Dac 1 cost about the same as the Transporter and they were a horse apiece soundwise. My current set up sounds better than the Transporter, although the Transporter is still good. If I'm going to use a high end dac, I don't need to spend that much money on the Transporter as a Transport only - just buy the Duet and use the cool new controller. You've got two choices for a high end system: Transporter SB3 or Duet with a high quality dac and linear power supply If you're looking for a lower end solution then just buy the Duet or SB3. I am aware that the SBR expects a minimum supply rating of 550 mA. As to my interest in upgrading the power supply: Just got the Duet about a week ago. I have added it to my main rig, and while I love the convenience of the system, the sound leaves something to be desired. The main rig is: Music Reference RM5 Mk III tube preamp - McCormack DNA-1 Rev A power amp - BW Nautilus 805 speakers. Cabling is Cardas and Synergistic Research. AC Power is via a dedicated line, distributed through a Furutech eTP-80 (except the power amp plugs straight into the dedicated AC line). My digital source has been a Marantz DV-8400 Universal Disc player. Power to that is through a JPS Digital Power Cable. The Marantz sits on Aurios bearings. My discs have all been ripped with dbpoweramp CD ripper to FLAC. Played back via the SBR through the main rig, compared with the same discs through the Marantz, the sound is thinner harmonically, and the imaging is less distinct. It is NOT bad, just not as good as what I'm used to. Which leads me back to the notion of upgrading the power supply. I would expect that putting a nice DAC in the chain would be much more effective, but I don't have the funds for that at present. I have gotten lots of mileage from various cheap tweaks in the past, and am just looking for one more! Thanks for your thoughts, Earle You may need an upgraded linear power supply but you definitely do need an external dac to improve the sound. I tried my older SB3 analog out versus into Benchmark Dac 1 a few years ago and the SB3 needed to go into the dac to improve the sound. Linear supply is another matter - the differences with a cheaper power supply are not that great in my experience. -- mr_bill mr_bill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6737 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49041 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I lost my server's boot disk early last week, so I was without my SqueezeCenter server until the weekend when I had the chance to rebuild it. During that time it was back to good old CDs and FM. If you're going to be playing it through an outboard DAC, and if it's only occasionally used, then I wouldn't worry too much about the merits of the CDP as a transport. (An aside: During the week of going back to CDs I was reminded once again of how much nicer it is to browse through a wall full of actual CDs instead of using one of the Squeeze interfaces. There are a lot of wonderful advantages to PC based music systems, but browsing and selecting something to listen to from a large music library is _not_ one of them. For this reason alone, I'd be tempted to hang on to a really good CD player instead of selling it. If you haven't played CDs recently, you should try shutting down the SqueezeCenter server and going back to CDs for a week or two. You might be surprised to find that your listening habits, even (dare I say it) your satisfaction level, may be different.) As a longer term squeezecenter user too, I'm with you. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 vs Transporter via external DAC
mofuv;251572 Wrote: I don't believe that price is what matters! I started with the analogue outputs of the transporter and compared it to the Linn Akurate CD Player. I was surprised that it was difficult to hear a real diference, maybe the Linn had a better soundstage, but the rest was not really worth mentioning. Then I compared both with the Scarlatti DAC linked to the transporter. I would not say that it was distinctly better. The situation changed, when I used the word clock output of the dac and connected it to the transporter. Now the dac acted as master and the transporter as slave. This really made a difference! Broader sound stage, great timing and a lot more details! The only downside is the flaw in the transporter: If it is set to word clock input and that signal stops (because you switch the dac to another input and it does not send a word clock signal) then the transporter crashes, has to be set to internal clock and then back to slave. The next step to avoid this was using a separate master clock and I also added the purcell upsampler. This gave the best sound I have ever heard with excellent musicality. You could clearly hear the different sound of the acoustic guitars Jackson Brownie is using in his life concert, piano sounds natural and voices as if the singers were just sitting there in your room. I cannot stop listening to all kinds of music and detect nuances which I have never heard before with different top systems. It is astonishing that also older simple CD-recordings have a great sound. I have all my Vinyls on the Hard drive and in this system I hear them as I would play them back via my turntable. I think the most important improvement to the system is using an external master clock for the dac and the transporter. I don,t know any other network player than the transporter where this is possible. But to get high end sound this feature is necessary. I realize this is not very easy to change but it would: 1. allow to maintain full resolution of the dac 2. solve the problem for consumer preamps with balanced capability 3. maintain flexibility for pro market The symptoms of excessive gain are not just limited to volume control. Depending on preamp design this may appear as channel imbalance, rolled off high frequency/too much bass, lack of speed, poor transient response. From the user point of view this is an issue that may not be obvious but it will make the device perform worse than what it is actually capable of. As a manufacturer I would probably try to avoid it. All you do is set the jumpers so that when transporter is playing at full volume, you are at the maximum listening level you'd want to use. Just start at -30 and move them up towards 0, until you reach your max listening level. That is really all there is to it. If you are already using a preamp, or if your amplifier has gain controls, then you should use those controls and don't touch the jumpers. What you are trying to avoid is a situation where you are at your maximum listening level with the volume bar only half way up. This is what might happen if you connected transporter directly to an amp. That's when you need to change the jumpers. Thanks Sean, That's a simple way of setting and understanding! [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Why does it sound better?
WSLam;142527 Wrote: Two of my friends just came over to listen to my setup today. We compared the Transporter Analog out to DCC2 SE Preamp vs Transporter AES out to DCC2 SE DAC + Clocked. They both felt that the difference is so minute... and in some cases, they like the Transporter slightly more relaxed sound then the ultra precision of the clocked combo sound. Do you run balanced out of the Transporter into your ice amps or single ended? If SE do you use the jumpers inthe Transporter? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter: Confused about volume control
Patrick Dixon;141917 Wrote: The DAC is 24-bit resolution whilst most music (CDs) is stored as 16-bits. Therefore if you volume control digitally within the 24-bits of the DAC (ie providing you don't allow any rounding of bits 25 and below to occur), you always maintain full digital resolution (*). What you do suffer is a degraded SNR from running the DAC at less than max, but that's traded-off against any SNR losses in the pre-amp that you're now not using. (*) Slimserver adjusts volume control (in the SB3 at least) so that -30db and above volume settings avoid rounding or truncation of the 24-bit data. Does anyone know where you begin to lose resolution or rounding/truncation with the new 6.5 software? I guess that has a volume scale of 0 - 100 rather than the 0-40 for the SB3. I undertand keeping the volume above 30 but this may have noew changed. cbemoore;142060 Wrote: The 0 - 100 volume control corresponds to -50dB - 0dB attenuation, in increments of 0.5dB. So -30dB will be 40/100 on the new volume scale. Chris So if you keep the volume at 40 or above n the new '100' scale then you are not losing bits or resolution? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter balance outputs; some questions
seanadams;141473 Wrote: Notwithstanding the educational value of trying it, unless your headphone amp has balanced inputs, it's probably not a good idea to use the balanced outputs. You would need a _very_ low noise active balun circuit (super regs etc) in order to approach what's coming from transporters RCA outputs. However, if you're picking up a ton of noise due to having an unbalanced run, then maybe look into it. Sean, Don't both the Transporter RCA and XLR outpus make use of the super regulators and same output circuit? Mabe I didn't understand your answer above - it may have been referring to something else. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ripping service and formats
Hi, I'm thinking of having Slim rip my CD collection and I use Itunes to manage all my music. I have a reference two channel system and want absolute transparency. Is the format AAC going to give this to me or should I be looking at something else? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Ripping service and formats
Does ALAC stand for apple lossless audio codec? That's how I am ripping in to ITunes now. What about WMA? I don't imagine that I can use Flac with Itunes - I don't really know how I would manage two different format systems - Itunes and Flac.
