Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Small form factor Amp/receiver

I listened to this at CES in 2008 and thought it was a fantastic
sounding piece of kit for the size and cost.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Controller

2008-05-15 Thread twylie

I just got mine yesterday and although I had handled one at CES and
expected it to be good for my use, I'm floored with how great it
actually is. Further proof that Sean, Dean, and the rest of the
company get it. Lots of revolutionary technology that will keep the
big boys playing catch up. Couldn't be happier with it. I had been
holding out for the Controller to be available separately, but gave up
and agreed to split up a Duet last week with another forum member (mere
hours before it was available standalone :-) ). As cool as you expect
it to be based on specs and screen shots; it sells itself on first use.
I'm taking mine to a buddy's house tomorrow morning (I turned him onto
Slim Devices a couple of years ago) and expect him to place his order
by lunch.

I agree it would be a nice upgrade to get with the Transporter as
something of a price break over purchasing separately.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Burning amp in with dummy load

2008-04-14 Thread twylie

wire one of the speakers out of phase, set them facing each other about
a foot apart and play mono white noise through the system. If you need
to, you can throw a blanket or quilt over the speakers to help deaden
the noise, but if the drivers are well matched, they should come close
to canceling out each other.

thanks for the post. I am trying to find some smallish powered speakers
for a client and the Audioengine A2s were about to get ordered. Given
that his use will be background music, the 1080s should do well for
him. He's heard the original M200 I have and liked the sound.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Smart multi room audio

2008-03-23 Thread twylie

something like the Russound CAV/CAM will get you all 3 of your
requirements. I've got a couple of the Russound RNet pieces in the
basement and feed them with tuner/XM radio/SB3/Roku M1000/Cable box
1/Cable box 2 and distribute any of the 6 sources to any/all locations
(10 currently, 2 unused rooms available). Sonance and a few other
companies provide multi-room/multi-source systems as well. I chose the
Russound stuff as it interfaces well with home automation systems.

I'm 39 and have no problem hearing the mosquito or other tones in the

less expensive for me if my ears rolled off at 15k. :-)

I'm encoding FLAC, and will connect via digital coaxial output into a
 high-quality DAC (Musical Fidelity X-DACv8).

there won't be any sonic differences if using an external DAC. The
only real change between them was the internal DAC and if you're not
using the analog outs, that's not part of the audio chain.

I can hear a difference, even when using an outboard DAC. I believe it
has to do with the SBR not having a display. I spent several days
listening to both the SB3 and SBR and in switching between the 2, I
always preferred the SBR. It seemed a little more dynamic and had a
quieter background. The differences were not huge, and both players
sounded good, just that the SBR was a little better.

Do you also notice an improvement in the SB3 when turning the display
off? Seemed a large following in the audiophile CDP market that wanted
to be able to disable the VFD or display on high end CDPs.

Looks like Nordost blue heaven to me, but those terminations differ from
what I've seen on factory terminated ends. Blue heaven used red and
blue shrink wrap but the biwire set of Red Dawn I have pairs the
positive on one side, rather than using alternating sections.

Are there any UPNP music servers that handle large libraries gracefully?
The ones I experimented with a couple of years ago started to choke
around 10-20k tracks. I haven't looked into any recent offerings that
may be improved in terms of performance.

thirdparty products like a squeezebox (PC to DAC to Speakers). In
essence very interesting to someone managing their music using a PC.
Nonetheless, it is unclear to me how that article relates, if at all,
to squeezebox applications. JJZolx says it does not.

Other views that will support JJZolx and Funkstar's views or perhaps
 there is dissent?

SlimDevices products do not rely on managing [audio] output from a PC.
The article does not apply here.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] OT - $1000 budget for loudspeakers

2008-01-21 Thread twylie

what kind of music and what attributes are you drawn to in systems
you've heard? - imaging, midrange, rhythm, etc? I've had my 2 channel
stuff in a smaller room (about the dimensions you stated) on various
occasions. Unless you're willing to do some serious room treatment,
anything that realistically plays below 35-40 Hz may overpower your
room and be very fussy, placement-wise, to avoid boominess. I'd look
for some small footprint floorstanders or small monitors (although the
cost of stands as mentioned may be 1/4+ of your budget).

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Mods for a non-modder: AES/EBU and XLR outputs

2006-03-20 Thread twylie

an off the shelf solution if you need to drive a long XLR run would be
to pick up a Monarchy DIP. The earlier version I have takes optical
and coax as inputs and outputs to either coax or XLR. The newer Super
DIP I have takes the same inputs but outputs to BNC or coax. HTH.
