Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Does Squeezebox Server stream 24 bit Apple Lossless files?
The Song info of the Squeezebox Server shows Sample Size: 16 Bits. The ALAC file is converted from Flac via Max. The Song info of the Flac file shows Sample Size: 24 Bits. I played the ALAC file with Quicktime and the media info shows 24 bit. -- vincentyan vincentyan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17868 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=8 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Does Squeezebox Server stream 24 bit Apple Lossless files?
I remember about a year ago I had problem with 24 bit Alac files. It was just static noise. Someone in this forum told me that the hardware of the Transporter was not capable to handle 24 bit Alac file. Now with the firmware upgrade, I figure that the transporter should be able to play 24 bit Alac files. Well, it seems not the case. -- vincentyan vincentyan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17868 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=8 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Does Squeezebox Server stream 24 bit Apple Lossless files?
I guess it is a bug in Squeezebox Server. The song info shows File Format: Apple Lossless, Bitrate: 2887kbps VBR, Sample Rate: 96.0 kHz, and Sample Size: 16 Bits. It doesn't add up. It has to be 24 bit. iTunes and Audacity see the very same file as 24 bit. And I couldn't tell any difference by listening. -- vincentyan vincentyan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17868 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=8 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Does Squeezebox Server stream 24 bit Apple Lossless files?
It seems to me that Squeezebox Server simply trims the file to 16 bit and then sends to my transporter. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] ALAC or FLAC
I am using iTunes and sometime use FF and RW, so I decided to convert all my music from ALAC to AIFF. It worked fine with SqueezCenter 7.3.3. Now I upgrade to OSX 10.6.2 and SqueezCenter no longer works, so I upgrade to 7.4.1. Well, problem comes. At the end of every song I played with my Transporter, there is a pop sound. I tested ALAC files and MP3 with no problem. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] ModWright Transporter experience: truth vs. beauty?
Thanks a lot for the advice. This is one of my perplexed questions about high-end audio equipment: what exactly a pre-amp does other than source switching and volume control (assuming line level amplification is not needed in my system)? If I have a decent source equipment such as the Transporter or a good CD player with volume control, do I still need the pre-amp? -- vincentyan vincentyan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17868 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43269 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Dear GuyDebord, Please confirm your finding that WAV is better than FLAC in terms of sound quality. There are folks that are getting serious on this. AIFF is native, but how can I fastforward on SB3? I couldn't find the button in Squeezecenter. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Apple Lossless a compromise?
Thanks for the tip. My AIFF files do have the extension of m4a (so they are not native AIFF files?). I then go to WAV: file type is .WAV and shown in iTunes as WAV type. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Apple Lossless a compromise?
Here is what I did: convert a song of Apple Lossless in iTunes to AIFF, WAV, and MP3 (iTunes doesn't support FLAC so I can't test FLAC). The resulting 3 files are .aif, .wav, and .mp3. Play them with SqueezeCenter. I can only FF/RW the MP3 song, not the AIFF nor the WAV. Any comment? It was strange that some of the AIFF songs in my iTunes library are .m4a files - those imported uncompressed from Grarageband. Well of course this is an iTunes issue and I guess I have to inquire Apple about that. -- vincentyan vincentyan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17868 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34122 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] ModWright Transporter experience: truth vs. beauty?
Frank, I came to this forum not long ago and enjoyed your writing very much. One question: have you tried to connect your modded TP to a power amplifier directly? Correct me if I am wrong: I don't have other source equipment, so I don't need a pre-amp with the TP, the TP's volume control is well built Vincent -- vincentyan vincentyan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17868 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43269 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?
OK. Good to know. And thanks for the advice on how much I should rely on Stereophile reviews. I fully understand that it's my ear and my brain to judge and there are many factors (other gears, how the CD was mastered, the room, my mood...) to be considered. Sean, could you clarify whether there is significant design difference, when using as a transport, between the SB3 and the Transporter? I was wondering why it would still cost more than $1500 if you take out the analog part from the Transporter. Functionally, it is an SB3 transport (less than $300) + 96k processing + interfaces such as clock input. I always thought that the big value added by the Transporter is its audiophile grade DAC. Well I am not in the US so I am careful in purchasing. That's why I am seeking help here: if I spend the dollar for a Transporter, and IF (a big IF) I still think it is not good enough, what are my options? I went through the Modwright Transporter and the SB+ and the info is very helpful. Any suggestions on the DAC with clock output? -- vincentyan vincentyan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17868 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49256 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Transport?
I have a DAC working with my SB3: a California Audio Lab CL-15 CD player, with PSDIF digital input into its 20 bit DAC. I have another DAC in my home theater room: a Linn Unidisk SC, and I think that the sound quality is about the same (well, sometimes I feel the CAL is better, sometimes not). I have been enjoying the good sound and the convenience brought by the SB3 until I got a Sony XA9000ES SACD/CD player - originally for playing SACD discs, then I found it is also an excellent CD player. Soon I feel that the sound of the Sony is better than my SB3+CAL DAC, not a big difference, but distinct enough that I found I tend to listen to the Sony more and more, with old fashioned take_out_disc_from_the_shelf_and_put_it_into_the_CD tray, when I got serious in listening. There is no digital input on the Sony, by the way. My system consists of Conrad Johnson CT5 and LP70S amplifiers, Dynaudio C4 speakers. I ripped CDs with iTunes on my iMac and stream the music to my SB3 via an 11g wireless router. I don't hear much difference between the SB3+CAL DAC and the CAL CD player playing the original CD disc. My question is: will the Transporter deliver better sound with its digital output into my CAL DAC? Before I purchased the SB3, I got confirmation from the Slim Device tech support that the digital output of the SB3 and Transport are the same. Want to double check here. 2nd question: assuming TP analog output is not good enough compared with my Sony (well, I make this assumption because Stereophile put the TP at A class and the Sony at A+ class, I maybe wrong, bear with me), how do I improve by combining the TP/SB3 with a high quality DAC? There are extensive discussions in this forum about using an external word clock or a DAC with a clock output, and I agree with seanadams that an external clock may generate more jitters. So, the solution seems to be 1) get a high quality DAC with clock output, and connect it with the TP and put TP on slave (any suggestions on the brands?); 2) get a high quality DAC with re-clock capability (I read somewhere that Benchmark DAC-1 can do this. Any suggestions?), and connect it with my existing SB3 (or TP, if there is a difference in their digital output). Dear Experts in this forum and Sean, any answers/comments to my questions are much appreciated.
