[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 24/192 playback
A number of my DVD-Audio discs rip to 24/192 e.g. R.E.M's Out of Time. On more than one occasion I've thought some favourite tracks didn't sound as good as I remember them sounding on CD so I've gone back and played the CD rip to find that some do sound better than the DVD-A to me. This got me looking into playback and I've noticed the 24/192s are transcoded to 705kbps FLAC, which is about half the rate of regular CD rips, and presumably explains my experience? Why would SBS have sox transcode 24/192 to lower quality than the average CD rip, and can one modify this behaviour? -- audiomuze Oh, and yes, I almost forgot... there are those $250.00 acoustic pillows you can stick to your walls, or even better than that magic tuning dots that you can also stick - and that by the shear act of using them will free you of the bondage of this dilemma. In fact I heard that if you paint your CD's green, put an MM on the top of each speaker and stick a Brazilian carrot in your ass while sipping ginseng tea your stereo will never sound better! What player do you have? 700kbps looks like 24/48 downsampled from 24/192. IMHO red-book standard CD 16/44.1 streams at less than 500kbps. -- amcluesent amcluesent's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79627 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I mightve been comparing against 24/96 streams as I have quite a few. Possible to configure SBS to have sox transcode to 24/96? -- audiomuze Oh, and yes, I almost forgot... there are those $250.00 acoustic pillows you can stick to your walls, or even better than that magic tuning dots that you can also stick - and that by the shear act of using them will free you of the bondage of this dilemma. This is all wrong. You can ignore the displayed bitrate number - it's just a meaningless guess. By default, SBS downsamples (via SOX) 24/192 to 24/96 for the TP/Touch (and 176.4 goes down to 88.2). The REM album you mention sounds WAY better on DVD-A than the regular CD. In fact all of the REM DVD-A's sound great.
