Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Oscilloscope question for Sean or anyone

2007-12-07 Thread Phil Leigh

So far I've managed to snag from eBay a decent Thurbly PM310 Bench PSU,
a mint Fluke 175 DMM, and a VGC Farnell Signal generator (total cost
$150) ... still not quite got that scope yet though :o(
A Philips/Fluke 3217 or PM3050 should be with me soon!.

ain't what you'd call minimal...

For $13k I'll build you my completely jitter-proof AK4396-based DAC,
then you won't have to worry about it :)

At the current exchange rate a vacation in NY will only cost you about
£10/week, so there should be plenty left for a scope!

Hmmm...plenty of scope for a Scope :o)
Yes your right - it would seem that I can stay somewhere rather
nice...any recommendaions for a hotel in NY that is good for
shopping/sights? I've been to NY many times but sadly my wife has not
yet had the experience.

(sorry this is rather off-topic!)

We use Sencore test gear for all of our digital post-production suites.
Info at http://www.sencore.com/products/da795.htm.

Their analog sets are great, too.

Erm - thanks Sean!
I'm bidding on a Tektronix 2225 at the moment - it's an older model but
probably OK for what I need.
I'd love to spring $13k for a jitter analyser...but I think my wife

Cheers and thanks

I suspect that some members of this forum may have spent as much on
their left speaker cable... not that there's anything wrong with that.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Oscilloscope question for Sean or anyone

2007-11-29 Thread Phil Leigh

If I wanted a scope for looking at SPFIF waveforms, what bandwidth would
be good enough?

I'm interested in doing some experiments on the SB SPDIF and would like
to make some proper measurements!

(sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question)
Thanks
Phil

Pat - thanks!
So 50Mhz would be OK (I'm not looking at jitter) - that's cool...roll
on eBay!

One ususally buys an 'scope that can handle a comfortable amount over
the nyquist rate.

http://www.pfarrell.com/prc/bits.html

RedBook audio is 1,411,200 bits/second

So if you are looking at RedBook, 5 or 10 mHz is a nice bottom. This is
nothing for a modern 'scope, so getting one that does 50mHz is 'safer'

If you want to see jitter, or other things much smaller, then mHz is not
enough, and you'll need gigaHz. this starts to get expensive and weird.
At GHz, the wire in the signal sampling leads changes the signal.
