Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply A/B

2008-05-23 Thread Dazza

I haven't tried anything other than the stock powersupply with my SB3
yet, but I did notice the very narrow soundstage compared to other
transports and sources.

I put one ferrite chokes around the DC and the AC portion of the cords,
it opened it up a bit. Will build a filter for the DC line in a few
days.

There might be a small difference between the two SB3s as well,
components sometimes change due to prices and availability. IE an
earthquake somewhere halts the production at site A, manufacturer have
to get components from site B.

Interesting you should say that. I use Shunyata powersnakes in my
system, and I found that the TP sounded noticably better when powered
with the Python chord, which has the outer layer filled with the
FeSi-1000 noise-reduction compound. Supposedly it helps digital
sources, but maybe it is related to the switcher. Dunno - but it works

Whilst taking on board your point about the hyperbole, to be honest I
was simply trying to describe what I heard. I remember being stunned by
the improvement, which is why that review cost me loads of money,
because I ended up buying the entire set of cables and the Hydra. I had
to send it off for photography, and as I recall to another reviewer, and
going back to more standard cabling was a complete letdown. It was agony
waiting for them to return to stay.

I still use it today, even though Roy Gregory reckons I would be better
off using Nordost mains cabling to create a system wide consistency.

One thing we never got round to doing, was to directly compare the
Nordost and the Shunyata cabling.

What is interesting about the Shunyata cables, is that they are one of
the few esoteric cables to be used in professional studios, including
Dave Gilmour's.

True, but for now this game is over! If I ever find myself in the

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply A/B

2008-05-14 Thread roll - gybe

I just hooked up 2 SB3s to my main system. One with an Elpac and one
with stock. Just for the hell of it (please refer to this statement
when you want to tear me apart!)

I did notice that they sounded different. Source material: Norah
Jones, Steely Dan, Larry Coryell.

It took me a while (like 30 mins) to see what was going on. Of course,
they both sounded fine, but I wanted to see if I could identify the
specific differences. My first thought was the Elpac was producing a
blacker background. My second thought was that the stock sounded
pretty good.

I began to enjoy the stock. It seemed like there was more information
present, but eventually I began to think it was bright. The problem
was, it seemed to present more information. So I started to identify
instruments in my A/B.

There it was. The soundstage with the Elpac was wider. The soundstage
with the stock was more congested. All the information was present, it
was just better spread out. The stock seemed to grab my attention with
more concentrated music, but once I identified the issue, I liked the
Elpac better. The stock seemed louder in comparision after I figured
it out.

I had a similar experience A/B-ing my high powered amp and my $300
yammy receiver... They both sound good, but there were small
incremental differences that I slowly identified and around which I
generated preferences. But now that I know the differences, I can spot
them. (yes the big ol amp won out.)

So the stock is now back in the bedroom, happily powering a great
sounding pair of eras and the Elpac is in the main system.

BTW - I got the Elpac with a 3rd used SB3. I had no intention of
getting it. I just ended up with it. I am not going to recommend
anyone go get an upgraded power supply.

Either way he does a double blind he loses because either way the wife

Makes me glad that my S.O. is geek enough to think proper testing is a
good idea. We spent some time the other day doing A/B tests for some
new speakers. It was not a DBT because we could tell which pair was
active. We did take turns flipping tracks and speaker sets for each
other. It was partially blind because she did not know the price tag
on any of the speakers until after we agreed on the pair we liked the
sound of.
