[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Power-One supply - how hot should they get ?
One of you guys should start a thread in the DIY forum about making these power supplies. I'm thinking about getting one of the triple-output Power One models (+5,+/-12 or 15 V) from Digi-Key as the PSU for a DAC I am working on. It would be nice to know what connectors, cables, etc. everyone is using. Just a suggestion :) -- ezkcdude SB3->Derek Shek TDA1543/CS8412 NOS DAC->MIT Terminator 2 interconnects->Endler Audio 24-step Attenuators (RCA-direct)->Parasound Halo A23 125W/ch amplifier->Speltz anti-cables->DIY 2-ways + Dayton Titanic 10" subwoofer He's not hi-fi, he's my stereo. ezkcdude's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2545 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

An option to keep the heat and the power consumption down is to use the AmpSwitch plug-in and a relay to switch the power source from the PowerOne supply and the stock PSU when the system goes into standby. A small cap across the DC lines shoud keep the SB alive during switching. -- Jitterbug Jitterbug's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4955 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Temperature is measured on top of case above transformer area. No sensing links as they are only required if you have a very long output lead to the SB3. Anything less than a metre will be OK if you adjust the voltage with a testmeter on the plug. The fuse be should be 250ma on the mains input end. Switches, neons and fuses on the output are not required. -- Heuer Heuer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2543 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Phil Leigh Wrote: > of course I guess you know that these fuses won't be good for sound > quality ... Well, you could always get an audiophile fuse for $30 (sorry, i don't have a link to a supplier). Then you'd have to get an audiophile fuse holder too, or hard wire it. I may try hardwiring a $2 ceramic fuse- out of curiosity. Does the Power One need an output fuse? I'm pretty sure it has over voltage protection, and the SB has a fuse of it's own AFAIK. I don't disagree that it could possibly make a difference to leave the mains fuse out, but at what cost to safety? -- Skunk Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I was thinking of the DC fuse (and my tongue was somewhat in my cheek) :o) It's just that some people will obsess about the quality of the mains or DC cable but ignore the teeny weeny little fuse and rubbish fuse-holder that's in-line -- Phil Leigh Phil Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=85 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I have fused both the input and output, .25 and 2A respectively. A switch would just give me peace of mind whilst not at home. Are you measuring 34C inside the case or on the casing ? If I touch the transformer itself then it reads 50C. Do you both have the sensing links in - you both seem to be running cooler than me, so keen to understand whether that is down to ventilation or connectivity. -- mortod mortod's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4651 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Mine has been on non-stop since I built it (March). Case temperature with SB3 in standby is currently 34c. If your case temperature is in or around this figure then no need to worry. -- Heuer Heuer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2543 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

mortod Wrote: > Is it worth fitting a mains power switch for safety's sake ? > Sure, if you think you will be there to manually flip the switch when/if the wires start melting :-) Otherwise a fuse would be a great safety feature. Mine doesn't get very warm, hard to even tell it's on unless I wrap my hands around it. It's rated to operate up to 50C (or 70C at 40% load), FWIW. -- Skunk Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
